  • In-depth analysis of Otto Hightower in House of Dragon Season 1.
    Among the fans, there is a highly negative sentiment towards Otto Hightower; and from the way in which people speak of him, one might assume that Otto is the epitome of evil and the worst person in the world. However, I believe that this perception is based on assumptions and a lack of understanding of the distinction between what we and what Otto knows.

  • @user-ti5cw1ug6l
    @user-ti5cw1ug6l 5 месяцев назад +55

    There's nothing that makes Otto exceptionally evil for a man of his setting. He's just the archetypical ambitious lord. Most lords would've taken the opportunity to marry their daughter to the unmarried king without a son as well. On the contrary, he's such a pragmatic and talented statesman that even Jaehaerys I recognized him. He pretty much always gives the most objective advice for a medieval context. Haters will say that him picking Rhaenyra over Daemon and then Aegon is a contradiction but it's not. Male preference primogeniture says children of Monarchs's come before siblings and that principle does give Rhaenyra a leg up over Daemon. With Aegon however, the dilemma becomes brother or sister. Also, Aegon marrying Rhaenyra is much less weird than Daemon marrying Rhaenyra. The age gap is much worse for Daemon and Rhaenyra. It was the best advice.
    Considering that Aegon and Rhaenys are the male and female candidates to the throne with the strongest claims or that the customs and precedents heavily support the Greens at all, Rhaenyra's claim with bastards to follow her is so weak that she would have to deal with Aegon, Aemond, and Daeron to save her dynasty from them or their descendants. Them or their descendants will inevitably press their claims against the Strong boys at some point since they could always claim to be the true kings. Otto didn't orchestrate this war as much as people think he did. In understanding a medieval setting one can see that most of what Otto says is common sense. This is why he would support a son even if he wasn't his grandson. Succession rules applied consistently means less dynastic conflict because people aren't claiming the throne by wildly different metrics (heir by customs and precedents vs named heir).
    As for his hatred of Daemon, it's clearly justified given how so many of his actions already would be grounds for deposition or would otherwise be seen as extremely cruel even by medieval standards. He's the epitomy of "doing whatever the hell you want just because you're a Targaryen." He's summarily executing people all the time. He's a literal murderer and does it in almost every episode.

    • @MrFredstt
      @MrFredstt 4 месяца назад +14

      And, despite what people think about medieval societies, killing your wife and/or treating her the way Daemon did was always looked down upon. Everyone even knows Daemon killed her or at the very least they suspect him of doing it. Viserys was just too spineless to do anything about it

    • @mg-cx5tv
      @mg-cx5tv 3 месяца назад +8

      First of all even if rhaenyra doesn't wants to kill her siblings she would have to eventually because there would always be a risk of rebellion and backstabbing etc even if she wouldn't have had bastards , she would never let her half brothers live or anyone from her side would have get them killed if she would become the undisputed queen.
      Suppose if after war greens lost , blacks won and in this alternative version all rhae rhae's kids are alive. How can people be so naive as to think that Daemon Targaryen would let her bastards take place before his own trueborn sons? That man is crazy about blood purity and all. He would have find a way to get rid of strong boys one way or another and before or after would get either full control over rhaenyra aka queen or put her in a cell or something , I mean are we forgetting that he took her to brothel to defame her and wanted to marry her simply to get closer to power ?
      Besides what otto did is same what corlys did just played better and won. Yeah I hate all this as a woman and feminist but in those days things were unfortunately like this and that's why people don't want to understand TG characters ( except few actually problematic ones like Larys, aegon ) , people think they would seem old fashioned to even understand these characters so they simply settle for seem silly and judge these characters by 21st century.
      Those who can't understand HOTD's medieval world should really watch Magnificent Century, that series is the reason why I could understand TG and intentions of Alicent specially.

    Still Otto's plans often seem pretty flawed. If Aemond hadn't happened to claim Vhagar (something Otto had nothing at all to do with) the Greens position is far weaker. Otto later launched a Coup d'etat in Aegon's name without first securing Aegon's support. There was a non-zero chance that he could have been left without the king he was fighting for. Even once he had Aegon on the throne it was a king who'd never been prepared to rule and who actively disliked Otto.
    I think the popular villification of Otto is exaggerated but to say he did nothing wrong is going a bit far.

      This is some fair criticism. Otto really should have put more effort into preparing Aegon for his role and paving the way for a smooth succession, he could have secured him strong alliances beside the Hightowers and Lannisters and found decent marriage pacts for his siblings. And he should have encouraged them to claim powerful dragons like Vermithor or Silverwing. It's amazing how poorly they were prepared for something so predictable and long awaited as the kings death. I suppose his efforts were hindered somewhat by his dismissal and his absence in Aegons youth. He also couldn't risk making his intentions too obvious to Viserys.
      If Aemond hadn't claimed Vhagar I don't think Otto would have proceeded as he did.

    I am so glad there are still people out there who are able to think, and analyze smart decisions and motives of people and not confuse it with treachery and malice. In GOT it was kinda obvious that the Lannisters are the bad guys since they have done several evil things with or without much reason, like Joffrey and Cersei did.
    But here both sides are relateable and understandable, and it's up to the audience whose side are they on based on their views.
    It's partly because of Otto why I am team green since their characters feel much more real, relateable, disciplined and overall a lot of them are much more better people than the blacks.
    In summary, that was a great video explaining how many of Otto's moves were based and actually bold and smart. So great job my man!

While trying to marry off your very young daughter too an adult is fucked up, sending your young daughter into an adults bedroom in your dead wifes revealing dresses is no less fucked up. Whilst it’s quite fucked up, from a purely practical stance, it was a pretty good move. Laena was the better marriage option and in order for Otto to beat Corlys in the race for Visery’s hand he needed to do something to better Alicent’s chances. So he planted his daughter in the Kings bedchambers and got Viserys to “lust” for her. So he won the contest.

    5:54 Otto isn't dumb, this is a complete fantasy. By the time Viserys died there was obviously never going to be a peaceful road for Aegon becoming king. Otto doesn't get any credit for maintaining peace when he's brewing up the stage for inevitable civil war. Viserys through wishful thinking and good intentions was trying to avoid war, Otto was outright preparing for it. Reframe it in the time or context however you want, but feigning loyalty to a man for over a decade while planning to kill his daughter and most likely starting a civil war is just wrong.

    People always told me that Otto tried to isolate Viserys from Daemon out of ambition. However…
    When has Daemon ever EVER shown Otto that he isn’t a threat to the crown?! Otto served as a hand for a long time. It was too long ago when two Targaryen brothers brought chaos to Westeros for ambition and war Maegor and Aenys and Aeny’s children.
    We know that Daemon loves his bro. But Daemon also loves power. Daemon is ambitious reckless ruthless merciless acts first thinks later, casually commits violence consistently. Why wouldn’t Otto think that Daemon is a threat to his much weaker older brother and to the realm? He’s not scared of Rhaenyra he’s scared of Daemon.
    And by medieval feudal standards he did what any father would do and secure the highest most beneficial, not necessarily happy, match for his daughter. The King is the most eligible man ever. So he secures her a the best match. I’m not saying he did something good as Alicent was not happy but that was what fathers did.
    And yes by Machiavelli from the Prince, in order for your reign to be secure you can’t have any threats aka potential heirs who can usurp you. In a world where male line goes over female line which Jaehaerys great council reinforced, as long as Aegon Aemond and Daeron live then Rhaenyra will never be secure especially when she intended to crown a bastard her bastard after her. Rhaenyra in the show versus the book may not have the stomach for kin slaying but Daemon who has no love for Otto or Alicent and by extension Aegon Aemond and Daeron certainly wouldn’t. He’s scared rightfully so as well.
    And even if Aegon chooses to be a figurehead we all know Otto is a competent leader and Aegon also has other people to provide good guidance such as Alicent Criston etc. people who know how to lead from experience. Rhaenyra will be influenced by Daemon who is not a good influence.

    There are some great points here, although I would definitely argue that his true intentions were made with less consideration for the realm and more consideration for his house and himself. They were by no means altruistic.
    Rhaenyra, though far from a perfect individual was Viserys’ chosen heir and regardless of tradition, the King’s word should stand. Not to mention the Lords and Ladies of Westeros had already sworn fealty to her.
    Being aware of the headstrong personality traits of many a Targaryen, Otto would’ve known that usurping the crown would provoke war and bloodshed, still he did it. And not for the realm’s sake either. Aegon II was poorly suited for the throne and did nothing to prepare for it.
    I do think that he holds very close resemblance to little finger, albeit a less unscrupulous version.
    The person whom I would say schemed with overall altruistic motivations would be Varys. He knew he had little to gain in way of status being a eunuch, and a foreign born one at that, still schemed for the greater good.

      @@KhalkedonYT Otto duty n tradition aligns with his ambition. I would say it’s wrong to sell ur children n manipulate their lives but again he is no different to any other man in Westeros.
      I say there is a lot wrong with the culture of Westeros. Fans just hate Oto because the see him as a judging manipulative person n for some reason they can’t see the same with Daemon(even though he is more upfront about it)

    Otto was clearly responsible for the dance in the show.
    He pushed viserys to disinheirt daemon and name rhenyra heir.
    Poor planning on his side.
    Should have just said nothing and married alicent to viserys akd let her have a male heir.
    No it was his simple minded hatred of daemon and his mistaken belief that he could control rhenyra that led to this mess

      You sound like Viserys had a lot of options, but there were only Daemon and Rhaenyra and it's easy to understand why Otto suggested her. After Aegon was born, Otto could have set Rhaenyra aside and push for his grandson's claim but instead he tried to convince Viserys for Rhaenyra & Aegon engagement.

    Otto Hightower Did EVERYTHING Wrong.
    He is not evil but in my opinion, he is indeed a bad person and a psychopath who wanted power for himself. He wasn't exactly doing things for the realm. I will argue each and every point that you made in this video but first of all, let me agree with you Otto wishing his daughter to be a Queen wasn't wrong at all because anyone would want their daughter to be a Queen in that world but after that everything Otto did was plain stupid and wrong.
    1) About Otto's mistrust of Daemon. Otto's mistrust of Daemon in the show is somewhat flawed. It was never really established why he thinks Daemon would be the "second coming of Maegor." Daemon murdering a bunch of ra*ists does not make him like Maegor. Daemon did not burn innocent smallfolk. Besides that, Otto can see many times that Viserys actually loves Daemon as a big brother loves his little bro. So, the way Otto perceives Daemon's character as some evil person is kind of baseless. Yet, I would still agree that as a hand, Otto was right for wishing that Daemon doesn't become king.
    2) Otto was anything but brave going to Dragonstone. Do you really think Daemon was going to kill Otto? Yes, Daemon went rogue but he wasn't stupid enough to kill the hand of the king. So, Otto was pretty secure if you ask me.
    3) 5:50 you actually mention that "Otto is willing to bend the laws for order and stability". Can you please explain how tf it is not wrong??? lol. Otto was TOTALLY wrong there. What stability is Otto talking about?? Then you asked - "Why Otto wanting Aegon to be a King is wrong?". Come on. That bs is totally wrong and makes Otto the absolute villain. First of all, who is Otto to decide that Aegon should be the King and not Rhaenyra?? It is written in the Aegon's law and Great Code of Septon Barth that any Targaryen who sits on Iron Throne has a right to choose an heir to the throne. It does not specify that a woman can not sit on iron throne. Before Viserys, even Maegor had named a woman, Princess Aerea as his heir. Otto actively trying to change what King Viserys wanted was the reason he was fired from position of hand and it was totally wrong. Viserys had total rights to name Rhaenyra his successor and Otto should have accepted that but Otto did not because HE WAS WRONG. Otto wnated power. He wanted his daughter's son to be queen.
    4) 6:30 you say "Realm has known peace during Otto's tenure as hand". Wtf are you even talking about dude? Otto is literally the sole reason why the realm was literally burnt down. Otto is the reason why the upcoming dance of the dragons war will happen. Millions died because Otto could not accept a woman sitting on Iron Throne when it is established that King can name anyone as heir. Otto wasn't a strong hand. He was a self-serving psychopath who wanted power.
    5) 7:22 You mentioned, "...He is actually what everything a reasonable Westerosi man supposed to be" Oh really?? So all the Westerosi men should deny Targaryen king's orders? If King wants his daughter to sit on Iron throne, all westerosi men should go up in rebellion against the King? is that so?? All the Westerosi lords bent their knees in front of true queen of seven kingdoms - Rhaenyra but you suggest that all the men should forget about their vows and loyalty and against their own word because a woman cant sits on iron throne. Really???
    6) let's talk about Otto's justification for him wanting Aegon to be king. "A woman cant sit on Iron throne because Westerosi lords would not accept Rhanyra as Queen. Westeors will burn if Rhaenyra becomes Queen. Rhaenyra will kill Alicent's children if she becomes Queen." All of those Otto beliefs are absolutely nonsensical, baseless, and downright outrageous. He was TOTALLY WRONG in all of those beliefs. What exactly makes Otto believe that Rhaneyra would kill Alicents' children as soon as she becomes Queen?? There is literally nothing mentioned in books or shown in the HoTD that Rhaenyra was horrible cruel person in her childhood or early teens so what are Otto's beliefs to that Rhaenyra would murder Alicent's children. Unless, Otto, Alicent or anyone in the realm actively pushes Alicents children, i.e. Aegon to be King, Rhaenyra wouldnt harm anyone.
    Next up, Lemme ask you who exactly in the realm didn't want Rhaneyra as the Queen besides Lannisters and Hightowers. Lets go over that regionwise - Entire North, Vale, Crownlands, and even 80% of the Riverrlands wanted Rhaenyra to be their Queen. Baratheons would have supported Rhaneyra as well if Lucerys had agreed to marry Boros' daughter. Dorne doenst care to join war at all. So in terms of power level, only 25% of the entire Westeros wanted to go against Viserys' orders.
    7) Otto knew that if he pushed for Aegon to be the King, then war would follow for sure but he didn't care about it. He pushes Aegon to be the King and he is the sole reason why millions will die and dragons will die. He always knew war will happen but he actively moved towards it rather than being diplomatic and refraining from that conflict. THAT IS WRONG
    8) Alicent misinterpreting Viserys' last words "Aegon should be King" is one of the worst writing i ever seen. For 20 years, Viserys mentioned that his daughter would sit on the iron throne but out of nowhere, on his deathbed, in his dying breaths, viserys apparently said "Aegon should be king" to Alicent. It is absoultely absurd that Alicent and Otto actually believe it. And the worst part of that is...in that scene, Viserys never actually says that Aegon should be the king. I have seen that scene many times and I still don't know what exactly Alicent heard in there to come to the conclusion that Viserys outright wants Aeogon should be king. It was just pathetic reasoning for Alicent. woke HoTd didnt want to make alicent power-hungry and cruel like book so they gave her some random reasoning that she "misheard". what a joke.
    9) Last but not the least, everything would have been perfectly fine if Otto just accepted Rhanyra as Queen. Indeed, in medieval times, woman being the Queen wasn't really happening a lot, but in throughout England's history, there have been many Queens. It isn't exactly out of the ordinary so Rhaenyra becoming Queen shouldn't have been such a hard pill to swallow for Otto as she had legit right to sit on iron throne and Viserys wanted it. Bottomline is...Otto didnt want Rhaenyra to be Queen ONLY because he wanted his grandson to sit on iron throne. Thats selfish and WRONG.

      First of all. We don’t need your life story. Second of all, how does Otto not want whats best for the realm? Visarys’s marriage to his daughter is a respectable marriage. Also, it was really emphasized that the realm wanted aegon on the throne instead of rhaenarys, and that is exactly his intent.

    Umm... yeah bravery be established, however doing something incredibly dumb by insulting Prince Daemon, who Otto KNOWS has a dragon and without having a backup plan other than "Sheeth the fucking steel", does not equate to bravery. It equates to utter incompentancy and arrogance. Seriously how would you imagine yourself in such a situation? Otto is a brilliantly educated dim wit that did pretty much everything wrong, not just in his actions but also by being the silver serpent that had the kings ear.
