But is he truly the master manipulator that he's believed to be, or could he be the political and magical pawn of someone else?

I think the reason why larys went with the Greens is because the Blacks would be unwilling to give him anything part of the "closer to gods then men thing" in short the Blacks would be unwilling to reward Larys for his schemes the greens would have

I tend to prefer to think of Larys as merely a skinchanger who controls rats rather than a Greenseer, but it might be interesting if he were just a puppet of Alys Rivers.

This theory of Larys being the puppet of a skin changer master is not only fascinating but terrifying. The horrific idea that the real person is beneath the puppet witnessing the horror not being able stop what is happening and knowing in the end you will be tossed away like an empty shell. What if as a child he went playing where he should not and was taken over. Or perhaps he is a messenger of the House of Black and White ❤️🩸🐉🔥

Well, I think a Hodor Figure makes more sense than a Greenseer. I mean we have already Haelena as a Dreamer, so maybe we do have Bloodraven in Larys Body. Bloodraven did kill People who he thought would not be the right choice for the Prophecy of World-Saving to happen. And only when he realized his Time came to an End, he did let others discover his Schemes and let himself be exiled to the Wall, where he disappeared a few years later to become one with a Tree, just so that he could stay alive a little longer. And all his Work will probably be "destroyed" by Bran who rejects becoming like him. I mean I am a follower of the "Show-Bran became Bloodraven"-Theory, but in the Books, I think Bran will escape this fate and defeat the Others with the Help of his Uncle Benjyn and the Reed Siblings.
I mean there must be a Reason why the Others come south, they didn't do it for thousands of years, why now? And the Others in the Books are described more like a Fae-Creature civilization than the Ice-Zombies they became in the Show. I mean the Other, the Royce-Son and his Ranging-Party discover, laugh and play with that young Nights Watch Brother in the Prolog of AGOT. That is not the behaviour of a mindless Warmachine, which we got in the Show, that is the behaviour of a predator, like Cats who play with their Food.
So if Bloodraven wanted to make sure that everything goes as planned, that Control-freak would have used someone in the Past as his Pawn. So using someone like Larys seems reasonable.
Fascinating possibilities. On one hand, Larys as a pawn would fall in line with GRRM’s horror influences, and it is dreadful to a level approaching Euron’s shenanigans. On the other hand, why can’t Larys simply be a capable operative who is perhaps mistreated and underestimated given his disability and perceived weakness? He may undermine his own House because he’s been body-snatched or simply due to spite and lifelong resentment. Great video!!
Great video, but I think there is a simpler explanation to Larys siding with the Green. He is a broken, bullied person and thus naturally sides with the broken, bullied family rather than the jock one.

How exactly are the Greens broken and bullied by the time that Aegon II is crowned?
How were they bullied? I get that they were more ousted from the spotlight as they’re the king’s second family but they were always on the attack. The first moves were instigated by the greens. They took the throne, killed Luke, they killed Rhaenys and then they set up the battle of the gullet which cost the blacks jace, Vermax and Stormcloud.
Plus I think it’s more likely that he was playing the fence (at least in the book). He was in talks with Daemon throughout the dance yet still kept aiding the greens.
I always interpreted Larys' decision to die as an indication that he was ideologically motivated, and that once his purpose was complete, he happily embraced death to be rid of his deformity. If he's a skinchanger, this makes even more sense--he's making the decision to be permanently free of his disability and live his second life inside his animal. I think his motivation was to weaken the Targeryans on behalf of the Old Gods.
I think rather than trying to control the outcomes, Larys aligns himself with who he thinks would come out on top. He knew Rhaenyra’s sons were his brother’s bastards and that Alicent was pushing for Viserys to admit the truth. If Viserys were to give in to Alicent’s demands, Harwin, Rhae and possibly also Lionel and Larys would have to face consequences for high treason. Larys also knew Viserys liked Lionel Strong as his Hand, to the point he refused to let him resign. So, arranging the assassination of his father and brother served a dual purpose. It opened the door for Otto to return and got rid of the only person that could confirm with certainty the parentage of Rhae’s sons. The first is advantageous to the Greens, the second distances Larys from a traitor as well as making him the Lord of Harrenhall. By killing Lionel, Larys made himself too valuable to the Greens to get rid of.
I think it’s also not surprising Larys chose death rather than taking the Black. The Wall is a place where only the physically strong and able to fight survive, and Larys does not fall in that category. The North also has an ill reputation as the place where the old and weak die in winter when food is scarce. It is likely Larys thought being sent to the Wall meant a slow, agonizing death for him.
Can't believe the show turned one of the coolest and most enigmatic character in the series, someone who's intentions are still debated by the book reading fandom to this day into a creepy, feet loving degen*arate

I would be disappointed on Larys if he were just ambitious like Petyr. It's that, Larys basically remove the power of his family. Petyr seeks power, seeks to isolate the powerful and use their machinations to give them their trust and in turn, their "treasures" (Harrenhall, The Vale, Eyrie and Sansa / North).
What Larys has done is sacrifice the power of the Strong to have a trail of prominence. He destroyed his castle in a fire , fed the idea of Harrenhall's curse that can prevent employees . He killed his father, the Hand of the King more solid and without a trace of diminishing in power, he killed his brother, leaving him as lord, but lacking a wife, heirs or future. He sacrificed his domain, his castle, the power of a Hand of the King (Viserys being an impressionable King), he eliminated his brother (A good-natured and impressionable lover of the future queen and father of her heirs) ... For what? To be an advisor to the Queen Mother and have a seat on the council that, if asked, he would have had it before all that.
Larys could have used his machinations to bring the Strongs to the Iron Throne, eliminate the Velaryon (Laenor), pushed the HarwinxRhaenyra union to silence rumors of bastardy on their kids, pushed to cede Harrenhall to his person, when his brother becomes King Consort, keep by his brother's side all his life even as theHand of the Queen. He could have eliminated the Velaryons and Hightowers and made the Strongs gain their power and have access to dragons... But he sacrifice it, for... (¿?)
There has to be more to be satisfactory... All this sacrifice. I hope that as a child he lost on the island of faces or that he is being influenced to eliminate the dragons for some reason ... Something more than just stupidity (Let's be honest, sacrificing all this is stupid)
Exactly, so much of what he does legitimately does NOT make sense, nor can you make any sense out of it. I also had the thought that he could have gone to the Isle of Faces at some point and his body was essentially hijacked by something or someone else, because otherwise his course of action is just nonsense.

I hope it is the latter and shows a more sinister side to the old gods. With Larys and Alys Rivers. Many say that she can have influence on R'hllor, but what if, her power comes from the old gods, from the cold ... It could be more interesting.

My theory is that the old gods are playing a long con to get Westeros back and that they succeed by getting Bran on the throne. Larys is being used as part of this plan.

As someone else on here said, the idea of Bran being controlled by Bloodraven is a show show. In the books, Bran will reject Bloodraven and help to defeat the Others.

@Hill's Alive Let's not forget the vanishing garrison of Harrenhal. George tells us that Daemon takes the castle because Larys was in KL and thus Harrenhal was lightly garrisoned. Were the rest of House Strong's forces in KL too? Did they fight against the Blacks in the Riverlands? IT DON'T MATTER!!!
For their sakes I hope they just walked off the pages into a better story; somebody's gotta have a happy ending in this written-in-crayon shitshow

Interesting take on Larys and thank you for the shoutouts to my video. I don't think I ever considered that he may be a victim of other skinchangers taking his body. The possibility is there as you mention, and could make his more....homicidal actions towards his family more understandable. I didn't really go into his end game as the videos were intended to be relatively spoiler free to his end game, however I'll give my take here and maybe on a stream/video later about his decision to die. It very well could be a second life scenario, where Larys like Varamyr had a planned second life ready to go and thus to him death isn't the same finality as others. Varamyr is a tremendously powerful skinchanger without prophetic visions, and he had long planned for his death with his wolves and even considered going into the trees as well once his body dies. Larys could very well also have an animal back up plan somewhere, or perhaps he is aware that the weirwoods on the Isle of Faces or the one in Kingslanding are options. Perhaps he feels those are better futures for him personally than freezing his clubfoot off on the Wall, where a tremendous amount of his enemies would be waiting and it's not like he has the Raven's Teeth like Bloodraven does in the future to protect him.
Also, this depends on the extent of his powers. Is he like Varamyr, and just a powerful skinchanger, or is he like Bran and also receives green/prophetic dreams. What kind of green dreams he gets like for instance Jojen Reed who seems to know his life is ending and is resigned to it well in advance. Bloodraven as well when we meet him knows that the end of his life as Brynden is quickly coming with Bran's arrival. Maybe even Helaena as well in the show, she certainly is troubled by what she sees in her dreams already. Prophetic or green dreaming characters tend to have a sense of doom about their destiny once they learn it, feeling there's no avoiding destiny. Bloodraven's line about the ink being already dry is one I come back to a lot. If Larys knew all along that his death would come at the hands of Cregan Stark, then perhaps he allowed that to happen because of that feeling that he is filling his role rather than trying to avoid it and extend his life at the Wall.
And just on a more human level, perhaps he truly is in love with Alicent in his own twisted way taking her death extremely hard (as well perhaps his role in killing her child Aegon) and when faced with the choice of having more life as a nobody on the Wall in the cold or dying at Cregan's sword, he chose to join her in death than continuing to stretch out his broken life any more. As well as in the future regretting what he did to his father and brother as well as the extermination of the rest of his house at Aemond's hands. That Cregan didn't just make him face his crimes against Aegon, but the path of pain and death to those around him that lead him to facing Ice. That he has showed no remorse so far doesn't mean he won't in the future, especially with the hellscape he navigates in the Dance. Again, thanks for the shout out and I enjoyed your take on the theory.
Thanks! And your theories about his decisions are interesting, especially since choosing death really is such an odd choice given the kind of character that the show has crafted him in to so far. But you make a very good point that the person he is now isn't necessarily who he'll be at the end of the series, so there could be a more personal reason why he kicks it rather than some magical conspiracy.
Here’s my wild and unlikely theory:
Since greenseers can interact with people from the past, perhaps Brynden Rivers is giving orders to Larys Strong since he MIGHT be a greenseer himself. (To manipulate events from the past to ensure that Brynden’s goals for the current time period are met.)
And when The Dance Of Dragons came to a close, perhaps that’s why Larys chose the executioner’s block instead of the wall because he felt that his mission was complete.
I feel like at first, he wanted to save westeros from the inevitable instability that would come with a hypothetical reign of Rhaenyra and her illegitimate children. Then when he saw that Aegon II and Alicent did not want to reconcile with formar black lords and cáusese their uprising, realized that from now on they would be a problem and only a group of competent people who had Aegon III under their guardianship could peace and stability.
For me, his character si more related to Varys, who works for peace, than to little finger who wants chaos to rise to power.
Varys doesn't work for peace, Varys says he works for peace, but his actions say another story.

I seen a comment on the joe magician video that thought that if he was a Bran or Bloodraven type character just less powerful that he might be only trying to start a civil war to decrease the number of dragons, possibly even make them extinct. Since dragons are hard to kill but other dragons are known to kill other dragons, also since that is the outcome we got…

I wonder if Larys chooses execution because since he knows Cregan Stark is performing the executions, he knows he’ll be beheaded before the weirwood thus allowing him to live on forever in some form in the weirwood network.

My theory is that Larys was the kind of person who wanted to see the world burn, to see great houses like his own torn down to ruins, that he enjoyed watching the Dance from the side-lines and with the end of the dragons and the war he saw his life was complete and just allowed himself to be killed by Lord Stark.
Yes, having read Fire & Blood, he’s a contradiction in actions. I don’t think there’s anything to indicate he’s a green seer or skin changer. He’s exactly like Littlefinger in that he’s out for HIMSELF and quietly changes his alliances as it will benefit him.
But the thing is, he is not really for himself. He would have an easier time with the Blacks.

I think this overlooks the simpler explanation that Larys is crippled, and was probably mistreated by his father and brother, which would explain why he would be willing to murder them. And for why he wouldn't want to take the black, I can't imagine Castle Black is in compliance with ADA standards and probably saw that as worse than death.

I don't think Petyr has powers, there is definitely no hint whatsoever in the books anyway.
I think there is merit to those ideas in terms of the thematic connections between Larys Strong and green seer symbols (the clubfoot as in woodland spirit, the Strong bloodline, Harenhall, that one weird blood oath in Fire&Blood, the Greens in general, etc). However, this theory is a little too vague for me. As your saying, green seer magic could explain some of the obscure machinations of Larys Strong, but only if those machinations led to the ends of the green seer behind them.
If you're saying Larys Strong was a green seer and had mysterious goals that we don't quite comprehend, well that's the same as saying he was a normal man with mysterious goals that we don't quite comprehend. Magic doesn't have to be involved.
If you're saying that he was controlled by a green seer, you gotta at least guess who. Let's keep in mind that most of Larys Strong's actions facilitated, if not led directly to, the Dance of the Dragons. So we are looking for someone interested in undermining the Targaryen dynasty and/or whipping out dragons. The only characters I can think of who could even do it are Bloodraven, Bran and Euron. Bloodraven and Bran are likely acting against the Long Night, which would objectively be much easier with a family of dragon riders around. Euron is more malicious but it's unclear to me that he would try to whip out dragons rather than taking their power for himself. If I was Euron and I was able to skinchange people in the past, I would be more interested in taking over Elissa Fareman to get her three dragon eggs.
And that's kinda the crux of my issue here : none of the characters we know of have the power AND the inclination to puppeteer Larys Strong specifically. I guess there could be some secret tree wizard out there we haven't met yet, with power we know little about and goals beyond our comprehension... Doesn't sound like a meaningful addition to the story though.
While I was watching S1 of HotD, I never sensed a supernatural air around Larys. I felt he was a combination of Varys and Littlefinger, with underline fantasies and kinks regarding Lady Alicent. But after watching this video, I can definitely see it and will be paying attention more closely to the last Strong. As far as Larys's goals. I think this Batman quote regarding the Joker sums it up best.

Yeah I agree, but why do that when he could leave his own human body alive? It just seems hella risky to commit to living inside someone else permanently and not having the safety net of your actual human form.
@Hill's Alive Perhaps he would have felt there was too much attention, even at the Wall? He would have been known by Cregan Stark and any of his associates, plus his own supporters from the Riots like Perkin the Flea were going to the Wall also. If he takes on a new body and everyone thinks he's dead he gets a clean slate to keep working south of the wall.
Larys and Addam Velaryon's random visit to the Isle of Faces prior to 2nd Tumbleton are definitely things that I hope get explored more in S2 and S3 for sure
@@theduxabides9274 personally, in regards to Addam , I think he was used as a way for the Blackwoods to marry into the Starks.
After his death at Tumbelton, his body was carried out by Lord Blackwood and interred at Raventree for the next eight years. To inter a man in your family home is a huge sign of respect, but why did that honor fall to the Blackwoods? By right of rank, the Tullys should have taken him to Riverrun, unless the Blackwoods could claim to have been closer to Addam. Then, during the Hour of the Wolf, Lady Alys gives her hand to Cregan Stark so that he'd spare Lord Corlys. Yes, it did prevent war but if Addam was respected enough to be interred in her home, I see this as another way of honoring him, by saving the life of his "grand"sire.
After escaping King's Landing, Addam likely went to the Riverlands to find Daemon, believing him to be the one person that could change Rhaeneyra's mind, and landed on the isle of faces because of pure coincidence or was invited in.
There, he was likely told of the long night and that his actions would aid in its prevention and that it had to do with House Blackwood. So his decision to charge Seasmoke at Vermitor was to save Ben Blackwood who was in the center of the battle.
Well, that's just my tinfoil reason as to what could have happened at the isle of faces with Addam after he "sought the council of the greenmen". It is a place surrounded with mystery and magic so anything possible.
I can think of multiple reasons to choose death for skinchanger Larys: he doesn't want to be a cripple of the wall especially as he will likely be there with his enemies, maybe the extension of his line was the issue maybe he realized he had destroyed his dynasty and just wanted to get it over with quickly, being aware of the world beyond the veil he didn't want to be up there with the others and who knows what else. Or maybe he had already planned that as his first death and skin changed away ooOooh
I dont know, but, he makes my skin crawl. The only other character to pull this kind of reaction out of me was Ramsay Bolton.
I like you theory better than my assumption that he knew his disability would be difficult to manage at The Wall, & he’d probably die from it anyway. At least if he died then he wouldn’t be cold and uncomfortable. Your theory is a far better one for the story.

Team Black, Team Green? Nah, I'm team creepy Larys!
I have to admit that I’m not particularly convinced about him being a greenseer or another hodor. One reason being, that he is never connected to magic in the show itself and none of the magic users in asoiaf seem to be interested in earthly matters (getting into a powerful position in kingslanding like it seems to be larys goal).
Someone, I forgot who, probably LML theorized that the House Strong are anciently related to House Stark since the days that the First Men first appeared in Westeros and that this is supported by how eagerly Cregan Stark was willing to fight for Jacaerys, his kinsman.
If this is true and given that the Starks and possibly the Strongs including Larys have special warging/greensight then it would indicate that some magical madfuckery is going on in the Seven Kingdoms and has been going on since the beginning.
Why does Larys look like Onision?

I'm obsessed with Larys, my affection rooted in projection* and lust, so I can't consider him objectively. I love the idea of him being a skinchanger and maybe even a greenseer, working for his own gain and/or tasked with a mission. But I don't like the idea of him being controlled by another entity, which would wipe out the complexity of his character as a human with ambiguous but plausible motivations for his choices.
*Wrong word, but I don't know a better one.
The Clubfoot is one of the most under appreciated GOATS of the Dance. I wouldn’t have survived and killed Rhaenyra if it wasn’t for him.

I feel I'd need more evidence before assessing this. I do think it's interesting to look at when Larys allies himself with Alicent (in the show.) At that time she seems weak, isolated and almost blindly loyal to Rhaenyra. This either suggests supporting "the Greens," as such, wasn't Larys' priority or that he somehow saw far more than he had any reason to.
Honestly he often strikes me as a sociopath who doesn't control his impulses and follows them and to the end of him and his bloodline he could choose to end his line by dieing in the freezing north or getting brutally killed by wildlings or lord stark chops his head of right then and there no delay of years
My personal thoughts about Larys are "what the FUCK is up with this guy"

We know only tow green seeres bran and bloodraven and they both were tryi g to prevent the long night, Larys was not killing the dragons almost doomed humanity until Dany came around
I think Larys simply wanted power- esp to be Lord of Harrenhal. But he could never do that with his father and brother alive. If that's his goal the blacks would never side with him. Plus, a key theme of the Dance is the struggle second sons feel to get out of their older siblings' shadow by taking power of their own. I think Larys reinforces that
i would love to see Larys being controlled by a greenseer but i have little faith in the show actually doing something as huge as this with Larys, i feel like nothing will come out of the mystery behind Larys and it would be a disappointing and less interesting end to him

But what really fascinates me, is why Larys is kinda obsessed with Alicent.
I genuinely believe that he actually has some admiration/affection for Alicent.
Especially if he uses the rats to spy. Since i still remeber the shot of Alicent looking up at the ceiling during her marital rape and BEHOLD A RAT WAS LOOKING DOWN AT HER WATCHING IT ALL.
I have not read the book so if something happens that disproves his feelings for Alicent, oh well.
Theres also how Larys might be the father of Alys Rivers. If so, i would not be surprised if the mother looked similar to Alicent.

Think Larys was impulsive and an opportunist. Alicent probably appeared more vulnerable and easier to manipulate than Rhaenyra
It's been a bit since I read the book but wasn't when our boy Larry "chose" to die during the trials' didn't it go more like "ay yo fuckin as if a Stark would let me take the black after all that lol just hurry up and kill me"?
To me it seemed it was less literally choosing death over taking the Black, and more Larys recognizing that while Stark just let a LOT of people take the black that he was going to draw the line at him. Someone was gonna die for everything that just happened, even if all those with lesser involvement just had fool proof plan against the headsmans axe. The north men came down south for blood and death (the book says as much several times) and Stark was going to get it one way or the other - Larys never had the chance to take the black, Stark was going to make an example of someone.

Beautiful tinfoil and I love it!!! Yeah... Larys is a head-scratcher for me. Definitely my favorite character in F&B, cuz I can't figure out heads or tails of what his deal is.
Larys is also a puppett of his master. Alys Rivers & Larys may had a connection. Larys was gone to the wall in the body of Perkin. he was doing his work there.

Not really a fan of the Larys is possessed by another greenseer thing truth be told. Mostly because it removes agency from him and makes him a piss boring character. His decision to rather die than to go to the wall is interesting, as it makes you think what kind of thought process got him to that point. But if it wasn't his idea who cares? And wasn't it George himself who said the most interesting thing to write about is the human heart in conflict with itself? That gets lost with a mind controlled Larys.
Mind controlled larys is the only one that makes sense. No one would have killed his family like that for no gain
I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a fan of this theory simply because I'm not a fan of every disabled person being a pawn in the "greater picture". I find Larys more interesting as a complex man with his own nonsensical political motives. He's at least has autonomy as a possibly psychotic, manipulative, political mastermind with a weird foot fetish and greenseeing abilities than a meat puppet for blood raven that was made vulnerable and accessible because of his disability
I would be so pleasantly surprised if it turned out that Larys was just a self-interested, imperfect, proud human making mistakes. All the deep theorizing and 4-D chess around this character sets of my alarm bells, it feels a bit too much like the 'Smart man tactical genius' love that blinded fans to the reality of characters in GoT. Like, people are still idolizing Tywin as a... What, Sigma Male genius? Am I saying that right? When he's transparently just a thin-skinned hypocrite trying to avenge his daddy resentment onto the whole world. Ditto for Littlefinger! People were shocked at his show death, but it felt perfectly in character for the broken man trying to use his power to Re-do his traumatic childhood. They aren't Machiavelli! They're people, they're very privileged men. Larys could just be another smarter guy who picked a side then got got during a very tumultuous time.
Tbf, I do enjoy this theory of him being the puppet rather than the puppeteer a lot better than the basic greenseer one!
