Please please please.....DO MORE OF THIS!!!!! I absolutely love this! Super simple explanation but it goes a looooong way
Safari Song by Greta Van Fleet is a great example of this. 5-4-1 in G for the chorus and verse, then 1-4-5 in the bridge after the solo. Riff in A Major pentatonic, then D chord then G chord. Thanks for bringing the significance to my attention! Would love to see a video in this sense of the very melodic Mick Taylor-era Stones, a riff oriented GNR lesson, or maybe something Free or Aerosmith related. You’re a great teacher, and do an amazing job of actually helping people think for themselves
Thanks for the shout out and for helping to support Movember! Awesome lesson!
And thanks to the mysterious anonymous donor!
Stitch, your lessons are friggin awesome man! It is because of your channel I actually started taking in person lessons. Th way you break down the theory of everything is so simplistic, and stops me from over thinking. Keep it up! Will always recommend
Another winner
Your lessons are either getting better and better. Or I am . Win win
this is an awesome series. more of this!
Thanks Ian...I love this new series! So much to learn, so little time. I will review this one for weeks to come. Thanks again my friend!
I dig the mother Mary rolled up in the blanket towards your left hand..
I know it at this point sounds redundant, but you are a great great teacher. Thank you so much for your time in doing these lessons. My playing has improved so much .....amazing
Your love of Zeppelin is so contagious. I have can't stop listening to them now. Every songs has multiple lessons in it and I see so many of the cool techniques that you have taught me. This is particularly cool lesson. The idea of making up songs with pentatonic riffs is a blast. Thank you
I never thought I could get in the mind of zeppelin thank you.
When you were showing the GCD and then throw in the 5 from D... "here I'll prove it to you right now" I totally heard some Grateful Dead! Nice! I always learn something from your videos
Probably my favorite lesson of yours that I’ve seen. Thanks!
Thanks Ian, you always explain these lessons so everyone can understand them and I appreciate that.
Great one Ian
Makes complete sense.
The dominant wants to resolve, but doesn’t have to, back to the tonic.
|E / / /|D / / /|A / / /|E / / /| wait for it...
You sir, are the man! Great lesson Ian
One ☝️ pequeno suggestione 🙏🏽 the addendum to this video you should be added to your intro video on home page, which needs to be updated for hairstyle 🤣 this is the scientific guitar channel, no wasted fluff...a great fan of yours and just enjoy the discourse on method. After nearly two years absorbing this channel , I am stoked about adding a Gibson ES-335 w/Bigsby to my collection and excited about what might be done with it. Thanks largely to you Ian for providing sound advice (every pun intended) ,demistfying the instrument, and being really absorbing to listen to. 🦸♂️to 100k subscribers and beyond ...
Great lesson Stitch. I learn something from every video you put up. Thank you
Thanks a lot for this videos! Hope sometime a song I wrote sound on your radio!
Sharing RIGHT NOW..! It’s the least I can do..!! ✌🏼😎
Stich I love you. I have fallen off watching your vids of late, then I click on this and its just pure gold. I think I have some serious catching up to do
Always coming in with the good info man. Thank you
Great insights always Ian thanks so much. The Guitarzan Analysis is truly your forte. Rock on brother!!!
Excellent lesson! Another great example of a familiar song that follows this pattern is Sympathy for the Devil.
Is saw orange and white and thought it was a home improvement video ;)
Just wow an eye opener, and I actually got it which is unusual for me. Thanks a lot.
Really enjoyed that one. Many thanks
Ah, thank you! I resolutely refuse to play cover songs, and trying to come up with original blues/rock had me sinking into that same 12 bar swamp too. This changes the game, my drummer will wanna buy you a beer.
excellent lesson thank you!!
Here is our dilema. How do we pay all these great teachers... There is a way! :-) Best I can do is subscribe and watch so many great lessons. Thanks Stitch!
Exxxxxcellent!!!!!!!
Love this! Keep it up!
So if the riff is the minor pentatonic of the V does that mean you can solo using the minor pent of the I or stay with minor of the V. Eg How many times. The riff is on E (v). Great! solo in that, esp over the V. Can you use the minor pent of the A (I)? I’m sure you can but does that makes sound less blues rock?
Awesome lesson - really good explanation of how those riffs are created! Here's where I could use some help... Let's say you're in the key of A (using A, D, E chords). Can you get a little deeper into E pentatonic vs. A pentatonic either for soloing or riff writing in this way? I get that all E pentatonic notes would all be in the key of A, but am I right in saying you're kinda teasing at a mixolydian approach to the riff/melody even though you're only playing those notes? What makes you choose between the pentatonic positions throughout the song (E vs A) and what extra notes you might want to toss in if you were going to break out of the boxes or add some passing notes. Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks, Ian! Love the channel.
Gold dust! Thank you.
Will do!
F@#k yes! Thank you stitch!
In the GCD, using the A in relation to the D is a form of dominant harmony. Five of Five.
One of my favourite classic rock songs is in CFG, it starts on the G, and throws in the fifth of G on the chorus... Fortunate Son.
See! I said prove me wrong!
I've always wondered why that order of chords sounds good (that is, starting on the V); the chords were "out of order" (to me) because of always playing straight blues. Turns out I just didn't know the "whole story". It's decidedly impossible for you to make a bad lesson. Thank you, again!
I finally get what you’ve meant all the times you’ve said, “Start on the five.” Of course, I have questions...or a question. What are ways to solo over these progressions? For instance, you filled space on the one progression with Bmin pentatonic...would you start there with a solo or somewhere else?
Welcome to the Jungle does this
Good stuff!
Actually at 7.30 it was sounding very Sabbathy! That riff around 9.00 was very Traveling Riverside Blues. Besides, Jimmy "borrowed" a lot licks himself.
Great tips.
OMG, Stich. That's totally me, every time I try to create a rock song, I end up creating a blues track. It's like my brain is hard wired to go to the 4th after some bars on the 1st.
I think it’s humanly impossible to explain that concept any better. Just literally cheat coded the ability to unlock and write hundreds of songs!
magic .....
Awesome
Excellent lesson! I've heard many talk about this concept but didn't fully grasp it. Imagining the V chord of your progressions V chord is what you call a "borrowed chord" right?
A borrowed chord is a chord that is outside the key, usually from the parallel major or minor key.
Whelp, time to listen omw to work.
Nice. Why is it difficult to write a hard rock song with C, F and G chords? Are there any hard rock songs like that in C major, or is the scale just too "happy"?
Your lessons are great. Nuff sed
Whose great artwork is that behind you? Looks great - especially the tree with the orange background.
Ha! Believe it or not I found that artwork at a thrift store and had to have it...everything else either I did a long time ago or my wife painted
You fucking rock!
No, you rock!
Good stuff
Rocks first head banging song
Just a doubt. Wouldint it be B myxolidian then? Since we are starting on the 5 anyway? Please clarify. Thank you.
could do this with other Artist or if have done this or could you send me a link to your other videos.
Take a look at my in the mind of videos. I also have a stealing and simplyfing Clapton video
ok cool i dont know that. Thank you for the Help.
I thought this was going to be about Greta Van Fleet 😂🤣? JK
another great lesson hear stich. thanks.
BTW.... re stealing from Led Zep........you're moving into Black Crowes at about 9 minutes..... so stealing from the Robinsons who stole from Zep.... well enough that Page played with them! Man I love the "Live at the Greek" recordings of the Crowes with Page.
I tell everyone even post them links directly to the primer playlist but I can’t get the jagoffs to listen to me!
Haha! Much appreciated!
thanks Mr Stich!! curious why you say that a 1 4 5 in C is not good for writing rock riffs?
Because the C chord is too folksy. IMO.
you doing 1 4 5 minor but for example E A B so E minor A minor and B minor but you are playing E major instead of E minor in this video.ı dont get it can someone explain ?
0 3 5 😎
Sometimes you gotta go outside the box god dabbit
When I get home in just over an hour, I *WILL* write a kick ass rock tune with G F and C. Watch me!
Your Bm riff sounds a lot like 'Steam'
I know!!! Totally heard it as I played it. Was waiting for someone to catch it.
Oh, I could never steal...
Can I borrow without asking?😊☝️
No one rocks in C? Rock and Roll by the Velvet Underground has C F and G chords! (and Bb).
Aren’t you really just talking about E mixolydian, harmonically?
Stealing from zeppelin...
Oh, the irony.
Waiting for that comment to come in😏
Learned alot thAnks
