Karlston: A full-time job, raising two sons. Zero time to CFII in 30-months is very impressive! That takes more than average focus and drive. I like the part where you studied for your tickets while commuting to/from work. And, congrats on achieving your goal of aircraft ownership. Double-kudos for dedicating time to those that would otherwise not be exposed to aviation - young, and older.
Great video. Kind of a spin on what the Flying Doodles channel does from time to time. I love listening to stories from owners of how they got into aviation, what they fly, and why they fly it. Keep rolling on this series!
I also fly r/c (30+ years), and working on PPL. This man is a good example of the kind of guy you can meet at a model airplane field or at the local airport...some of the best guys I ever met. Great interview. He speaks my language.
I'm older than that plane and I work just fine! Love RC and FPV and SIM too! I might not get my private certificate, but I might get my drone commercial 107 cert this year. You have some interesting friends MojoGrip! I wish you guys continued success!
Get your PPL and you automatically get the 107 with currency. I got my PPL and went to work for an aerial photography company before the 107 was available, because you had to hold a PPL or greater to legally operate a UAS commercially. Get your PPL it's so much more rewarding. Good luck!
I'm sure you get plenty of comments like this but you Mike and your drive to highlight minorities in aviation is inspiring. So much so I've had my discovery flight and started ground training. Continue with what you're doing.
Karlston, I had 10 hours toward my license, then life caught up with me. Glad you got your certification. I wanted to get a bonanza 35 since I was a kid. I'm happy you filled your dream.
Your plane is very good looking. I own and fly a 1962 P model Bonanza. Bonanzas are just great airplanes. Solid performer and well built. Few single engine planes can beat it. Full fuel, 4 passengers, 100lb of baggage and 160knots (185mph). Good deal.
Good luck. There is a tribe in africa that built a mound really high and they are waiting for the airplane gods to show up. Don't be a fool. I have 30,000,000 and I wouldn't invest in a plane, crypto or tesla. If you hear about it it's too late. All a scam. Industrial, commercial and multifamily in Bucaramanga Colombia is my investment. Caracas will be available soon
Great vid. So happy to see AA GA pilots. I used to own V35B, such a wonderful aircraft. Own Cirrus SR22T now,,,,,but GA is so much fun and such a fabulous human experience. Stop by KBMG sometime and say hi.
This is great. Good for you! And yes, I am very happy to see minorities getting into aviation. I have a good friend from Grenada (island) now working on commercial. Goal ATP. I love it and agree that vintage is good stuff. I have flown vintage Cessnas a good bit. Bless you for helping with introducing and getting minorities into this!!
Beautiful aircraft, Karlston. I always dreamed about owning a V-35 Bonanza, it just exudes class! Great story about your development as an aviation professional, keep up the good work.
The vtail wiggling in choppy air, is partly due to the vtail (one less empennage control surface). BUT, having a 1,000 hours in v tails, straight tails and Barons 55 and 58’s, I believe it is the particular NACA wing design of these Beechcraft. Yaw damper is good to have. Just don’t over stress the tail! I currently have a 1947 straight 35, the 819th bonanza built.
Great story, nice that you got your last plane first. I have owned an older F35 for 28 year and have never regretted it. My first plane last. Bonanza is a great traveling machine!
Thank you for sharing your story with us Karlston. I admire you for what you have been able to accomplish in such a short time, and stay the course. You're an inspiration to the young people that want learn how to fly. I must admit, I have fall in love with Beech Bonanzas. Got my licence back in 1972. Long story short, I like to get a Beech, even if it's a V tail. ( have no money tree in back yard) Lol. Have no time in it. My challenge is going to be, getting insurance, since I will turn 72 here pretty soon. However, iam blessed for the fact that I still can get 1st class medical. Just to feed my ego Lol. That being said, I would love to use the plane to help people in need that need medical care. I feel that's what God wants me to do. Karlston, you mentioned, your # two cylinder runs hot. Have you considered De shannon cooling baffles, and Gammi injectors? Lot of the Bonanza owners installed those. For what I have researched, its well worth the investment. Also, JPI engine monitoring system. Just a suggestion karlston. Wish you continuing success, and great, and safe flying.
Thanks, yeah it was a challenge! Hope you are able to get a Bo. This plane has Gami’s and JPI 700. Could use some more baffles but at cruise the temps are all within 10 degrees spread which is great.

Nice to meet you, Karlston! A Beech Bonanza is my dream airplane, too. An A36 would be nice... But at my age, my Piper Archer II will have to do. But hey, how many people can own their own airplane? Not many. So I think we're very lucky! Good luck and fly safe. And Mike... I'll see you at Oskosh!

What a nice plane I love Beechcraft. I have a 1960 Beechcraft Debonair 35-33 the performance is great better then I expected. I am still pretty new to my plane I have learned a lot in the short period of ownership.
V-tails are fun. Just did Arizona to Colorado at 155 kts true and sipping 10 gph. I'd always recommend one however it comes with a warning, vtails ruddervators are magnesium so if they corrode your sadly grounded as they're no replacements unless you get lucky and find one

Fractional is very empowering but these old planes are costly to fly. Fuel is more expensive here in europe and 100LL more so but I was looking at part owning cessna 172 vs LSA and it's literally 5x more expensive per hour to fly a 172. My LSA is 40$ an hour with expensive fuel, the cessna was quoted as almost 200. 40$ is fun, 200 is a drag. We really need new generations of planes. I imagine your Sling is quite economical for a 4 seater as well? Bonanza is literally from WWII, first flight in 1945. And they still make basically the same plane for close to a million dollars. That's just wrong. Imagine if someone still made a 1945 car and unironically sold it for 250k pretending it's current technology. The bonanza name would be good for a new generation of similar size at 40% weight, pressurized and with twin jets. Suddenly you could go over water, travel far as fast as airliners and it would be smooth and quiet and cheaper to run per distance. very doable.
That’s the same reason I’m looking to buy once I get certified. I don’t want to have to worry about availability or paying to look after someone else’s plane. I want to be able to just get up and get going
thats my dream too, but everything is quite more expensive here. You say $120 an hour : with this money here in France you will only fly a Cessna 150. Gas is over twice more expensive, place in a hangar is quite expensive too.

No, not another V-tail, which has the least rudder-authority in those dire portions of the flight envelope where you need the MOST rudder-authority. #DontFallForFads #DontGetDead
If you are a kid one option is to contact a local EAA chapter. They have a young eagles program to give kids a free airplane ride. If you are an adult find a FBO (fixed base operator) basically a learn to fly center and they usually have introductionary flights maybe $100. Good luck

How can I get in contact with this gentleman for a discovery flight?
If you are a kid one option is to contact a local EAA chapter. They have a young eagles program to give kids a free airplane ride. If you are an adult find a FBO (fixed base operator) basically a learn to fly center and they usually have introductionary flights maybe $100.
Good luck
