How do you stand up for yourself and set boundaries?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are doing a movie couple (friendship) therapy on Shaun and Ed from Shaun of the Dead. They’re taking a look at healthy and unhealthy boundaries in relationships. Jonathan talks about what happens when you’re afraid to set boundaries or when they're broken and what to do about it. Alan talks about the power of the edit in movies and how Shaun of the Dead puts on a masterclass. Same goes for the impeccable writing and storytelling through jokes!

You can tell that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been friends for their entire lives, really adding to their strong chemistry on screen. Even when Ed has been turned into a zombie, he still gets to hang out with Shaun, play video games all day, and not clean up, so it's not that much different from before.
well, it's different in one way, nobody is nagging him to be more accountable. Which is what he always wanted. Hurray for a happy ending

Ed kind of embodies the underlying theme of this movie.
Monster movies - and the monsters that inhabit them - are often metaphors for other fears that plague society. War, disease, nuclear fallout, Communism, emerging technology, sexual deviance, exploitation by the privileged few, the panic induced by a looming spectre of terrorism...
What I love about this take on the zombie movie is that the zombies represent ennui, a listless generation drowning in nihilism.
And if the point was too subtle having Shaun do it, basically everybody in the opening credits shambles about like zombies before the infection even begins. And at the end, in addition to Ed during in the shed playing games, the zombies after the crisis are grocery clerks and reality TV stars.

If you're running the whole Cornetto Trilogy, one of the underlying themes I realized is types of friendships. Long time friends in Shaun of the Dead, new friendships in Hot Fuzz and estranged friendships in The World's End

Also in the worlds End Edgar, touches on Toxic Nostalgia which becomes a huge focal point in Last Night in Soho
And "Paul", where the new friend are is introduced into the mix

What's interesting to me is they each play a different friend role type. Burnout loser: Simon in World"s End and Nick in Shaun of the Dead. Overly tight-ass type: Simon in Hot Fuzz and Nick in World's End. Easy-going layabout, Simon in Shaun of the Dead and Nick in Hot Fuzz so we get to see each permutation of the dynamic. Granted the details vary but we get to see each situation.
Close friendships where you can be your silliest and your truer self are always a pleasure to see on screen

Honestly, I don't think Pete is as bad as people were supposed to be made to believe. He lives with roommates who don't respect him, and he tried giving Shaun good advice to try and fix his screwed up life.
much of it depends on where you are in your own life stage. I was never a Shaun/Ed, but as I've gotten older, I've definitely become more Pete. Those who are still at the Shaun/Ed-at-the-start-of-the-film stage are going to find Pete an obnoxious kill-joy. Those who have already gone through their personal character arcs are going to find him less annoying, and possibly more identifiable. It's a bit like the meme about The Little Mermaid - at 16, you completely agree with Ariel; at 36, you completely agree with King Triton!
Its one of those things that, we havnt seen enough of their relationship or placed ourselves in his shoes enough to understand that we would feel the same way. Ive definitely been abit of a pete before.
@kalebhoward792 I've felt Pete AND Shaun. I've been both. But it's sad seeing your friend hold themself back and not progress. I can imagine it's frustrating for Pete to see Shaun so that to himself as well. Not to mention, Ed at times would take more than he'd give back.
Pete isn't bad, for the most part. He does have a nasty temper, and his inability to confront stressful situations without blowing up shows why we can learn from his behavior. That's the great thing about these characters: They all are imperfect, and we can see ourselves in them while also embracing our strengths and shortcomings.

One detail I don't see anyone mention: the moment Shaun talks about the break up, Pete backs off a bit and just says to keep it down. Such a little thing that humanizes him
Yes! He was not as bad as people make him out to be, he had every right to be done with them. I wish we got more scenes with Pete because we were just seeing the breaking point of Pete

Thank you for clarifying the difference between a close friendship and enmeshment. We as a society have a toxic expectation that because two people are close, they are romantically involved. While this movie discusses enmeshment and its damaging effects on a relationship, it still teaches us that romance is not the only worthwhile form of love.
I just love how they flip their roles in end of the world and shawn is the man child and ed is the responsable adult
Yeah and in Hot Fuzz Simon Pegg's character is the polar opposite of his character in The World's End. Nick Frost in Hot Fuzz is somewhere in the middle - not nearly as irresponsible as Ed, but not so responsible as in The World's End.

Literally never noticed this but during the scene where Petes yelling at Shaun and Ed, you can hear car alarms and chaos happening outside which explains why none of the zombies heard their antics. Every time you watch one of these movies you'll find something new and I am all for it

My favorite laugh in this movie is when Zombie Bill Nighy moving from the back of his car to the front, and just as Shaun shouts at his mum, "There's nothing left of the man you love in there!", he snaps off the too-loud radio.

The characters and their relationships are really key to the movie's success. You really care about what happens to them, even before the invasion goes down. Shaun and Philip finally mending fences before Philip succumbs to his injuries is always a tearjerker.
Oh god, I know a guy with the best story about that.
So someone lent this dude the DVD of Shawn of the Dead, which he put on his shelf and forgot about. A couple of weeks later, the poor guy's dad died. Understandably, he's a complete wreck, and spends the next few months just going through the grieving process. At some point, he sees the DVD on the shelf, and thinks "You know what? Maybe a funny movie will cheer me up".
He makes it to the scene where Shawn and Philip talk just before Philip dies, and about five minutes later the friend who lent him the movie in the first place gets a tearful phone call, and spends 30 seconds wondering why "Shawn of the Dead" has reduced his friend to tears, before remembering that scene and going "Oh. OH NO!"

I have a friend I made in college, and while we were never as stagnant as either character, I was 100% the Ed character in the picture for a year or so after he got married. We both have ADHD (though I was undiagnosed at the time), and we spent almost every night after work playing videogames into the early morning. I made a point of trying to make myself scarce whenever he was doing anything with his wife, and I would often do chores and help out around their apartment, but people would joke about him being more "married" to me than to his wife, and it was definitely problematic. I didn't realize that until long after, of course. His wife was super emotionally intelligent, and even though she was frustrated, she was incredibly patient in finding ways to gently push him to set boundaries with me. It never felt like she was hurting our friendship (except for one time when there was a fight and a big misunderstanding, but we figured that out), because she wanted her husband to still have me as a friend. I didn't always like not being able to hang out with my friend all the time, but I always wanted his happiness, too, and I always wanted his marriage to be successful. The result was that we finally reached a point where we weren't totally enmeshed, but we could still hang out for hours at a time when it didn't conflict with his marriage. He's still my best friend to this day even though I live two states away and rarely get to see him.

100% agree with how masterful Shaun of the Dead's writing is; it's witty, there's tons of subtle foreshadowing, excellent character conflict and growth...it's just "chef's kiss."
Also, Jonathan, thank you for mentioning the whole "not wanting to rock the apple cart" thing. It reminded me of a roommate I had in college. I met him at orientation, and we hung out a few times. We ended up spending a year living in the same apartment, and he was a total disaster. He stole my money, would take my headphones, and take other stuff. Between the two of us, I had the car, and he would just randomly ask if we could go grocery shopping at 9 PM. I did it because I realized I was kinda scared of him. I realized halfway through the lease that I couldn't live with him after the lease expired. I'll never forget how one day, he slept through a job interview, and he asked if I would take him. I said no. I'd be lying if I said it was because I grew a pair, but I think because this happened close to when our lease expired that I knew I could suffer no consequences for it. Still, it felt so good to say 'no.' Thank you for teaching that.

As someone who had an extremely enmeshed relationship with a Narcissistic mother, I literally did have to run in order to escape her. I moved in with relatives, and it took a while, but I sorted my life out, more or less. I discovered a lot about myself, was finally able to be independent and grow, and….then my mother fell, broke both her hands/wrists, and nobody else was going to help her, bc she alienated everyone else with her behavior. But the almost five years I had away from her was enough so that when I came back to help her, I wasn’t so lost or consumed by the relationship. And trust me, we fought tooth and nail as I established boundaries, and as I learned how to show her love in a way she understands, so that she doesn’t lash out constantly bc of feeling neglected. So it IS possible to grow from an enmeshed relationship. But it is hard, its daily work, it does hurt A Lot of the time. But if both people are willing to work and meet halfway, then it is worth it.
While I don't want to share exact details, I just want to say thanks for sharing your story, because I am in the midst of something similar to that. I currently have the chance to move somewhere far from my "enmeshed ones," but I've been trying to find excuses not to do it; a big part of that has been the fear that if I leave now, then that may be the death of those relationships altogether. But it's encouraging to hear that with some time and healing --- and of course, a ton of sustained effort --- even relationships like these can heal. (I know that's not a guarantee that they WILL heal, but it's nice to be reminded that they CAN.)
@@LamanKnight They definitely can. I never imagined in a MILLION years that my relationship with my mom would even start to become healthy. Let alone be in the place it is today. And like I said, its not easy, and it isn’t always good. But its miles and miles better than it was.
I'm heartbroken because I failed to do this with my mother. It's hard. You've done a great thing. ❤
Never let someone put all of that work just on you, either. Relationships require work from all parties.
@@AlleyCatUwU Oh trust me, I know. That’s what makes my situation so surprising to me, because I spent…25 or so years believing my mom would never change. Hours and hours and hours I cried because she was who she was and either I was going to have to go no-contact, or I would be enmeshed with her forever and never have my own life.
And yet, as she has gotten older, and I’ve been able to have my own identity and become more confident in myself, I’ve been able to have better boundaries, and she has been mostly respecting them, which is something she NEVER used to do before. I think she finally understood that I’m really the last and only person she has. Years ago, not long after I first moved back to help her, we got into a fight and I remember telling her “Who did you call when you got hurt??? ME!!!! You didn’t call your parents, your brothers, your coworkers, you called ME!!!!!! And I came running! I left my job, my friends, my grandma, gave away most of my possessions, my car, I dropped EVERYTHING over the course of a weekend, no questions asked.”
We still continued to fight after that conversation, but I do wonder if maybe that was the seed that sparked her to realize she had to learn to compromise and respect me as an actual individual person, because if she didn’t, she wouldn’t have anyone left in her life.
It’s been a Very long road. And its a road we will have to continue walking for probably our entire lives. But any progress is great in my opinion.
Cornetto Trilogy is one of the best movie trilogies ever
Hot Fuzz is one of my favourite movies of all time
It's so, so hard when you have a relationship where things are like Shaun and Ed on the good days, while walking on eggshells to avoid some sort of explosive emotional reaction on bad days. Someone who cheers you on and is happy and supportive, until its something they dislike.
Always remember, Shaun was the one leaving the front door open.
For clarity, Shaun was happy to allow Ed to be blamed by Pete for something he knew was his fault. A big part of their relationship was Shaun hiding behind Ed as an excuse for the issues with his life.
I'm a film student and we've studied this movie in multiple classes because it's literally perfect. I've written multiple papers about how and why everything in this movie works as well as all of the references and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout it
I'm now realizing that the relationship between Sam and Dean Winchester from the Tv show Supernatural could definitely be considered as enmeshed to a degree...it has a LOT of toxic traits and codependency.
I wish so badly they could do a video on Supernatural someday but i highly doubt itd ever happen given its 15 seasons.
I wish they could also cover the tv show HANNIBAL and discuss the incredible complexities of Will and Hannibal's relationship...PS ALAN, this show is pure ART in every single aspect of it. The sound design, set design, spfx, vfx, food design, cinematography, editing, acting, action, soundtrack.....the only small complaint is that the exposure is a tad too low lol but its an esthetic choice
Ooh, I'd LOVE Alan's take on the art of that show ! And Hannibal/Will's relationship: turning the "bad boy redeems himself out of love for the good one" trope on its head. Very enmeshed and toxic AF, and super romantic, but you can't look away it's soooo compelling.
Shaun & Ed share some similarity between Wreck-It-Ralph & Vanellope in regards to Shaun/Ralph base their entire life on being the other's friend.
I mean… in the second movie that’s true. And it’s kind of super out of character. As is Vanellope’s behavior.

When I was a kid I was traumatized by a zombie movie. This movie helped me get over that fear because this movie is just so well written and was worth “sorting myself out”

I adore the Cornetto Trilogy so much, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are _easily_ two of my top films of all time.
Another thing that does enmeshment really well: Elementary. (Yes, it's a series, not recommending that CT does a video on it...unless they want to, of course~). Without getting angry, Joan recognizes that it's so easy to become enmeshed in Sherlock's chaos, and they struggle to find a happy medium. But they work on it together so they're both happy and healthy, while still being close. An excellent modern family, if you will~
Hot Fuzz is my favourite of the trilogy shortly followed by Shaun of the dead. Two of the best films ever made.

Innuendo Studios just put out a great video essay about the Cornetto Trilogy, it's chief assertion was that each movie subverts the trope of the hero growing up/moving past their character faults, instead changing the world so that he doesn't have to.
Each movie has them begin to make strides but ends with the world changing so their original state better suits it, negating the progression of their character.
Came here to say the same thing. Shaun never needs to have that difficult boundary-setting conversation with his friend because now he is nonverbal, has no human rights, and cannot leave the shed.
Needed a take like this on friendships. Speaking up with friends literally terrifies me, but I'm seeing how much of myself I denied over the years just to keep them happy.

It took me more than one viewing to realize I shouldn't be rooting for him just because he's the main character, and he had quite a few flaws that made him a... less than ideal boyfriend...so I would love to see them talk about it. Because on that first watch, maybe even the 2nd and 3rd, I was fully rooting for him
@@Kelarys I'm not the most insightful person, but even on my first watch I was thinking "wow should these two break up".
He's projecting his desires onto her, and falling in love with an idea of her instead of the real person.
She's giving off so many contradictory messages she should be banned from working in communications, and she clearly doesn't care that much about how the way she's treating him is going to hurt him.
And neither of them seem willing to acknowledge that the other one wants a very different kind of relationship, despite the fact that they're both very clear about their expectations.
@@KelarysIn my opinion,both of those characters have issues. Tom is a fool to have such ridiculously high expectations of her and letting his mood entirely depend on her is bad for himself for obvious reasons and it’s also unfair to her since his mood should not be her responsibility to deal with. He was also dumb for trying to desperately make something work despite all the obvious signs as to why that won’t happen. That being said,Summer isn’t innocent either. Despite all of Tom’s flaws,he actually didn’t pursue her in the first place when she said that she didn’t want a relationship,he left her alone. All of that changed until Summer decided to start randomly making out with him at work which obviously did nothing but start the illusion of something working out for him. Summer initiated the situationship with Tom just for her to be like “I don’t want anything serious”. In conclusion,I believe Tom was being foolish and desperate and Summer was being selfish and careless.

Hands down favourite bit of Hot Fuzz trivia: Nick originally had a love interest when he goes to Sandford, but they thought it stretched the interactions too much (and bogged the movie down a bit) so they cut the character and gave most of her lines to Danny, in most cases without any changes.

Shaun of the Dead is my second favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy, my absolute favorite is Hot Fuzz. It's just so incredible.
However; I don't think I agree with your interperation here, because at the end.... *Shaun and Liz lives in the same house, repeating the same patterns of life.*
In fact, I dare to say that it might as well say that sometimes, people say they want a lot but in the end, they'll realize that what they had all along was just fine.

I cannot believe my Internet dads took a spear and shoved it into my soul. Jono talking about enmeshment-and this is my VERY first time learning of the term-described a significant handful of my relationships prior post-college. Long story short: eventually broke things off with an old childhood friend, and later separated myself from a couple other friends but mended my boundaries with them over time (thankfully, they understood and respected this!). I used to believe it was "right", "chivalrous", and "selfless" to put others before me, even if it meant putting myself down. And I had to learn there is nothing wrong or selfish with wanting to put myself forward, be it setting boundaries or saying "no" to plans or ideas, and that it is equally as important to voice what I need as well.
And to the ex-friend who retorted at me for vocalizing how I felt that one time... go take a hike! A really long hike with no shoes or bug spray.

I think Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a good movie to look at, it focused on confronting your past and also your significant other's past or something. Maybe even the netflix show, that one has Ramona confronting her past mistakes a lot

It's so nice to see you two covering content that isn't completely wholesome. For all the happy fuzzy heartwarming moments in this film, it's also touched with darkness, and it's good you guys acknowledge it; it gives the film that extra bit of reality.
I haven't seen this movie for years, and hadn't looked at it like you have shown from your perspectives. I love your takes on it, super detailed from a film making pov with the writing and set ups. Also, thank you for showing that enmeshment and setting boundaries etc, comes in a large spectrum, its not black and white, and that going from avoidant or co dependent behaviors to autonomy and self actualization is a process. You explained that so well, and as someone who sometimes can relapse into those behaviors its a wonderful reminder. Really loved this video

I am SO HAPPY you addressed Shaun of the Dead (and the Cornetto trilogy). I'm not into horror as a genre, but this one is my all time favorite films on so many levels. I related so hard to Shaun, and some days I still do even in my 50s.
Incidentally, the DVD of the film has an AMAZING cast commentary version that I cannot recommend highly enough, as well as many deleted scenes and storyboards. Thank you so much for this episode, and brilliant advice as always!
OMG! You're doing my favorite movie! First of all, thank you! Second, great job therapizing this relationship. I couldn't believe it when I saw this pop up in my feed. Years ago, when I was starting recovery from SUD, I would play this movie to distract me from the withdrawal symptoms. This movie is so well done, from the timing to the jokes and the timing of the jokes 😂 I was laughing so much it would help distract me from the worst parts of the process. The best!! I love you guys BTW. I'm so happy to have found your content. I recommend it to everyone.

What I really like about the story is the fact that Shaun's plan pretty much fails horribly. The whole Winchester idea doesn't go well and most of the groups dies. But he did the best he could in terrible situation and that counts for something.

This is my favourite film! I love the connection between Ed and Shaun in this and how you play it as well with the outro. Dylan Moran was so young in this oh joy. If you like Spaced I recommend Black Books. Just look at the chemistry and relationships this characters build too is amazing. Like I love how this was marketed as a zombie romance but it's more a zombie bromance haha

I have heard of Shaun of the Dead before but never watch it until this video came along. And now that I see it, I absolutely like it! And this is the first time I ever heard of enmeshment relationships but glad to know about it. More kowledge about friendship and healthy boundaries for me!

This might not mean very much, but it took me a long time to make proper friends and I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong.
In school, I always wondered why I was made fun of every day, until I put my own flag up; started dressing the way I wanted, and simply expressed myself a little. Suddenly I was in a rock band with a tight group of good friends I could actually speak to, after being silent and kicked down for years. I found my tribe!
And I'm delighted to say that, more than 20 years on, we still have that love and care for each other.
Friendship is another family, it's beautiful and important.

I just love this movie. My mom loved acting so she wanted us to recreat the bar scene when they hit the bar tender. My family holds this movies close to our hearts, so to see them break this down is amazing to see. Pointing out things I haven't even noticed.

This movie is so well written, I missed the entire point of it, getting lost in the zombie narrative and the main character's woes, not realizing that it's about his relationship with his friend affecting his now, and holding him back. It's really interesting to see that it's not that he doesn't love his friend any more, in fact their relationship is strong enough to survive the main character having different priorities

I've been in an enmeshed friendship and unfortunately, where Shaun and Ed were able to still maintain their friendship after the events of the movie, my friend and I didn't. She was not willing to respect my boundaries and she was in denial about the problems with our friendship. Now that we don't have a relationship anymore, I am now noticing the many instances where she held me back and where I enabled her to continue the problematic behaviors, and I am very glad that after going to therapy, I was able to have self-introspection and understand who I was and what I valued. Very funny that I'm watching this video after our recent "break up" lol

I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with that. He's worked through his depression, he feels like he has a purpose and he's stopped drinking. I'd say that's changing for the better.
