Goes to show you can’t go on any form of transportation with Tom Hanks and expect the ride to do smoothly. Can’t even go on a train with that guy without it tokyo drifting over a frozen lake.
People don't realize how hard those shots are in real life. Not only is the target moving, the platform they're shooting off of, this case the ship, is moving as well. And that's not including atmospheric conditions. Plus, coordinating your shot with other snipers.....
This shot is not impossible, but it's as close to that as you can get. Given practice, almost all of us can put a bullet on a 2' x 2' target at 1500 yards... this is a whole different world.
When Somali pirates took the SV Quest, we all envisioned an ending like this. When I carried the American bodies away in stretchers, it was apparent that it wasn't to be. Their lives ended that day almost before my eyes. It haunts me even now.
My deepest of condolences for your sacrifices. I believe most of the men in that incident are serving life sentences. Two or three died in prison, supposedly.
Easily the most tense scene in any film ever. The tactics of th ships to create waves, the lights to blind them against the snipers. Everything was perfect.
What with that D day landing, crashing the shrimp boat, getting cast away on a desert island, and crash landing in the Hudson river, you'd have thought he'd have learnt to keep away from water by now.
The surviving pirate, the one sent to negotiate, resides about 50 miles northeast of me, in bowels of Leavenworth Federal Prison. I drove past it, a few years ago, and its a massive, terrifying structure.
Each sniper had to INITIATE a green light i.e. they each had to have a shot lined up on their target... and the officer in charge had to wait until all three snipers had a clear shot...all at the same time. Then he authorised their shooting.
It’s such a weird feeling when you’ve been waiting for a satisfying ending with the pirates getting killed during the movie but when it happens there’s no celebration, just Phillips blindfolded and disorientated and then realizing they killed a kid
Those snipers must've had nerves of steel and eyes made of diamond lens to somehow only nail the baddies while only splattering Captain Phillips with blood.
I remember playing Medal Of Honor Warfighter had the captain Phillips mission wear you played as one of the snipers. It was every bit as intense as this scene

Yes, after a few incidents like this it became very commonplace to have a number of different security measures to prevent incidents like this in the future. However there’s always a learning period with these kinds of things
According to the crew of the Maersk Alabama, Captain Phillips has been accused of being a fraud and putting their lives in danger. The real crew members have stated that the film “Captain Phillips” is a lie and have sued for “willful, wanton and conscious disregard for their safety”. They claim that Captain Phillips was willing to sacrifice everyone else to save himself, which contradicts the portrayal of him as a hero in the movie. In fact, the real Captain Phillips never offered to give himself up for his crew, unlike what is depicted in the film. This discrepancy has led to a controversy surrounding the accuracy of the movie and Captain Phillips’ character
Right, the whole “3 shots from the unwaveringly silent marines who walked away afterwords without saying a word like it was all in a days work” is very much a military propaganda fluff piece. @courier6960 Right? Most of them were fishermen, and the commercial fishing industry in conjunction with mass pollution devastated fish populations to where they couldn't survive. So they went to this.
Honestly, I'd shit myself if my hostage started writing like he's not going to make it. Kind of implies his military will just end him and the rest of them.
If Capt. Philips would have stayed in his seat, not put on a t-shirt, and not try writing a letter, the situation wouldn't have been as tense as it was now, but on the other hand less interesting to watch.

9:08 Hate to be that guy but stopping the tow would most likely put the final pirate _out_ of the shot. Considering the sniper view is on the ship and the tow is moving the pirates' boat to them, stopping the tow would cause this velocity towards the ship to decelerate, or in more practical terms result in the boat accelerating away from the ship. While this seems like it should check out from what we see in the scene, keep in mind the handgun-wielding pirate is actually facing towards the back of the boat. The boat's acceleration in this manner would cause it to lurch forward from this pirate's perspective, which would more than likely result in him stepping back (towards the ship, away from the window) due to his reference frame accelerating forward from under him. However, doing the opposite and actually _speeding up_ the tow would more probably cause the lurch as seen in the movie for the exact same reason, just in reverse.
