Yessuh, ALWAYS! My main musical inspiration & the reason (wink) I was drawn toward audio production was that amazing human being, I miss him DEEPLY. Peace to you & yours, respect. 🙏🏽
My favorite EWF song is Fantasy. But when I guessed about what song this video would be, I was able to predict. Shining Star checks all the boxes for their musical approaches. RIP Mr. White.
As a kid my sister had her best friend over every day and she always brought these album with her. At 1st I did not know what this or who this was but it was a major influence on my childhood. To this day their music holds a special place in my heart. Their sound was something I was not used to because they weren't frequently played in Germany during the 80s on local radio. I still love their music 🤩
One of the writers for Chicago wrote "After the Love is Gone" and he said (I'm paraphrasing) EWF gave it the EWF flavor. I wouldn't be surprised if he had written other songs for them.
😂 "Don't call it a soundtrack..." you beat me to the punch by a split second ... knocked me out! 😊 Loved the "Got to Get You into My Life" video, dude I still say the Beatles wrote that track just for them, better than the original all day! And there are only a few tracks that hold that title in my list.
In that song, if you listen closely, you can hear the chorus bassline from "Shining Star." That is what hooked me onto listening to that Terminator X track.
As a bass player as well who has played in some EWF cover bands… hearing someone play the bass lines and sound so smooth with it is amazing. I enjoyed hearing you demonstrate what the bass was doing. Awesome.
Thanks so much for mentioning Mighty Mighty - the consciousness raising 70s anthem for black people AND Reasons, one of the most famous baby making songs ever!!!!
It is absolutely a HORRENDOUS movie through no fault of EWF’s. Watch the opening credits of the movie and then turn it off. That’s all anyone EVER needs of that movie. In other news, I was the kid who grew up not knowing Got to Get You Into My Life was a Beatles song. When I learned, that, I laughed and moved on. Earth, Wind, and Fire were MY Beatles.
Don’t forget one more movie. They did a song for the Canadian 1983 movie “rock and rule”called dance dance dance. I really wish it would’ve made it more into America cause it’s a pretty dog gone good song.
Nah Bro..true the movie tanked but look at it again with different eyes and consider how this industry now operates. The Group was killing it...that trio was extra wack. But the executive team wanted to push that weakness in spite of the fact The group had a consistent following. The executives were jealous of their abilities and didn't want to promote or support authentic talent. We see this today and is the reason the music industry is going under like Atlantis
Thanks for the break down Brandon 🙏 I grew up with EWF so they are basically my roots as a musician. And yes Verdine White is a B A S S legend. Stay funky bro 👍
Honestly one of the greatest black rnb soul disco lol groups of all time. That’s the way of the world is an amazing song. It’s funny how these soundtrack/album songs would go on to be reused hundreds of times in films
So are soooooo "not wrong", I grew up with this and EWF was my boys, and yes, Shining Star was my personal favorite, and the "That's the way of World" album is my personal fav' album of all time. It was a change from what they were doing, I nether though about it all until your video. EWF was a great Band after the That's the Way of the World album, but they never made a truly great album after this one, only decent albums all with at least one great song. Shinning Star and the album was the pinnacle of EWF.
Mama said FUNK u out! 😂 Thanks for yet another thorough & Fun analysis of yet another Wonderful song/s & artist/s. Keep up the good work I'm Learnin alot & Luvin all ur vids mate 🇦🇺
Also, a huge factor to the new sound of EWF, starting with "That's The Way Of The World" LP, was the hiring of engineer George Massenburg, who went on to become one the all-time greats of audio. Inventor of the parametric eq! 🔥
Funny thing is, "Shining Star" was always their biggest hit until Night At The Museum came out and used "September" in its end scene. That's when all the kids growing up made the song go viral, and the rest is meme, music, and cultural history. And as a lifelong fan of Earth, Wind, & Fire, I can say that's the tip of the iceberg on their hits. Personally, Open Our Eyes is my choice for my favorite EWF album, and if you want to peep their underrated albums, check out Touch The World and Electric Universe
You're right for the most part but Septemb wasn't a hit till when they put out their greatest hits album but... like you said didn't grow momentum until it started hitting movie's, commercials ads, and television shows but still one of their greatest hit records till date
Had nothing to do with a movie. "September" was written off as 'just another disco song' after the 70s. But like all classics it found its way into popularity thanks to oldies stations, weddings, and most of all the group reformed (sort of) and has toured every year since the early 1990s.
As silly and clunky as that movie is… I’ve grown to like/love? It. 🎶”Joy, Joy, Joy every day.”🎶😂 Harvey Keitel as “Coleman Buckmaster”… the super producer who’s forced to put the production of “That’s the way of the world” on hold by the record executives (Ed Nelson) to produce the corny family group “The Pages”… then he pulls off an elaborate “bait & switch” contract deal to exclusively be “The Group’s” (EW&F) producer and gains his own freedom as an independent music producer. Needless to say… it’s one of my all time favorite albums!!
Charles Stephany was the head coach, and Maurice White was the QB. What's rarely talked about with this iconic group is the mastery of Charles Stephany!.
THANK YOU for saying this! I'm a DIEHARD "Firehead" & I always deeply appreciate folk who truly KNOW this music & those who contributed to its greatness. True indeed, Brother Charles Stepney was absolutely a MAJOR force behind EWF, as well as Maestro Maurice himself. Peace to YOU & yours, respect. 🙏🏽
@@gautamdevgun333 True indeed, bredren. That's my favorite band, they have basically written the soundtrack to my life, they inspire me like NO other! Peace to YOU & yours, respect. 👊🏽🙏🏽
You can't talk about Shining Star (and the rest of EWFs classic period) without talking about co-producer Charles Stephney and recording engineer George Massenburg. Those two were about as instrumental to EWF's sound as Maurice and Verdine White themselves.
@diggingthegreats Maestro Maurice himself referred to their music as “spectrum music”, which I WON’T define, I’d invite interested folks to read his wonderful memoir & delve into his mindset. As far as their “sound “, besides each member contributing their prodigious ability, a MAJOR figure in the crafting of the various familiar elements (wink) of their music was the late, great Charles Stepney.
September? 😅😂🤣 Is that the only song that they made? People are COMPLETELY IGNORING the EWF catalog from Open Our Eyes and That's The Way Of The World all the way to All In All. The EWF have a TON OF CLASSICS beyond September and Shining Star. Edit: Oh yeah and Boogie Wonderland! 😅😂🤣 Those are the ONLY 3 EWF SONGS YALL KNOW?! 😅😂🤣 Wow. And yet yall know all the Beatles albums. 😅😂 Wow. And SCREW THE MOVIE!
When you said EWF and terrible movie, I was sure this was going to be about "Got to Get You into My Life" from the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie soundtrack again. "Wait, didn't he already do that video?"
Wow, here is a song by the Polish band Hey, which is entirely based on the same chords like bass riff from 6:00 ruclips.net/video/n6HNquM4ZpM/видео.html
AND THAT LYRIC! We should all post it on our refrigerators:
You're a shining star
No matter who you are
Shining bright to see

EWF is the black version of Chicago on many tracks. A compliment to both amazing groups of musicians.
It's the horn section.
The two groups toured together for a while and during their shows they do each others songs
One of the writers for Chicago wrote "After the Love is Gone" and he said (I'm paraphrasing) EWF gave it the EWF flavor.
I wouldn't be surprised if he had written other songs for them.
Especially their Grammys song of the year nominated “After The Love Is Gone”.
Cool thing is, EWF and Chicago have been performing and touring together for years, and have jammed on stage together at almost every show 😁
😂 "Don't call it a soundtrack..." you beat me to the punch by a split second ... knocked me out! 😊
Loved the "Got to Get You into My Life" video, dude I still say the Beatles wrote that track just for them, better than the original all day! And there are only a few tracks that hold that title in my list.
The chorus line was sampled on a phenomenal collaboration between Terminator X and Whodini called "It All Comes Down to the Money"
In that song, if you listen closely, you can hear the chorus bassline from "Shining Star." That is what hooked me onto listening to that Terminator X track.
This song is my “all starting to come together” song. Individual parts good on their own… but all together, something special
Keep up the most extraordinary work my guy
Love the LL Cool J reference. Very well played sir.
That EWF/LL Cool J venn diagram has a larger intersection than you may think.
As a bass player as well who has played in some EWF cover bands… hearing someone play the bass lines and sound so smooth with it is amazing. I enjoyed hearing you demonstrate what the bass was doing. Awesome.

Charles Stephey defined and refined the sound of Earth Wind and Fire
True indeed! He brought in the orchestral elements, the powerful, stirring vocal arrangements & those neat little interludes between songs.
He help turned EWF from a very very good band into a Great Band
Thanks for the break down Brandon 🙏 I grew up with EWF so they are basically my roots as a musician. And yes Verdine White is a B A S S legend. Stay funky bro 👍
The album does actually say it's a soundtrack - but on the back cover.
September was the last E,W & F song played by the brothers and sisters. Boogie Wonderland got more run than September easily
LL's "Murdergram" samples heavily from EWF's "Moment of Truth" from their earlier harder funk days - there is your connection.
Mama said, it’s NOT a soundtrack!
I thought you were talking about The Way of the World
As far as I'm concerned, their best works were from "The Last Days and Time", to "Spirit". After that they went to a more commercial sound- IMO
Very much in the center of that venn diagram. 😁 Another banger as always my friend!
One of my favorite and first EW&F soundtracks, & near flop, is Sweet Sweetback...
Charles Stepney was in negotiations to produce Michael Jackson before he passed in '76

For me it is up in the air between Shining Star and Serpentine Fire.

Where/how do you get the multitrack of these songs? Are they re-records or the original tracks? I've searched and can't find a clear answer. Thanks!
