Biggest takeaway from this: being great enough to tell the truth doesn’t always lead to being loved but definitely respected (Egos are a fragile thing). Great interview!
George is in a very elite group of the best audio engineers working since the medium was invented. What a pleasure to get a sense of the man. Thank you!
I've known George on a first name basis for a while... mainly back in the 90s and early 2000s. Great guy... incredibly intelligent, and a blast to be around. This video was a treasure to watch. Thanks!
Would have loved to hear more about EWF. I still think they are the greatest mixed albums of all time. The detail is incredible. You feel the power, yet you can hear the percolating guitars and percussion so clearly. I guess it boils down to taste?
GML is certainly in the rarified air for influence. Assessment of LR is spot on. Talented, selfless for a famous person and loved to showcase the talent around her which only made her look better.
Thanks for the great interview! Same thoughts about compression. That's why I like dynamic compressors and eq's because they process sound only when it's needed (if you dial them right). Interesting that time resolution/perception of smaller sounds gets better as the sample rate gets higher. Makes sense though. More information. Also Interesting use of pitch shifting to make sounds more distinguishable (if I understood that one correctly). Never heard or thought about that.
Before I can even watch I have to jump in and say Feats Don’t Fail Me Now (album) is one of the most fascinating mixes/engineering I still have ever heard. What I’d give to get under the hood of that! Massive feat in sonics😊
I love George Massenburg's records especially Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat, but I also love compressed and crunchy records. I want both because I'm greedy!
You're right.. Dynamic control is better than compression. I used that since 1996 with a primitive 16 Bit DAW. :-)) Now it's easy with some new one DAW like REAPER or LOGIC Pro Before we have had always a movement of serveral fader settings during a mix. Regards from Germany.
Ha ha, had to buy Waves… I know the feeling. Interesting that he was involved in the Oxford console. Always thought it was heavily derived from SSL technology hence the name.
Dear George, thank you so much for dusting off the sugar of some idealistic presumtion images of how it would be like hanging out in the Studio with Bands like EWF. At the end end of the day itˋs basically hard work in the Showbusiness industry and for the most part itˋ called Music Industry and not Music Friendship, right ? Cheers 🐺🙋🏻♂️🎈
Interesting. I always found the EWF live recordings very poorly mixed, with way too much highs and extremely muffled drum sounds. Turns out I've been wrong all this time. It's the other live music I listen to that is mixed badly. Silly me.
Bobby Owsinski, You should be ashamed of yourself for the terrible sound quality. I can hardly understand what is being said while it is about quality recordings/mixing and how bad DBX was. This sounds like very DBX.
George is in his shop. What do you want?! True, it doesn't sound great, but I can hear it fine! The assistant moving equipment in the background is really distracting.
great interview! thx. but: practising critical listening , you both have one of the worst mic sounds i heard in a long time. takes away from the overall exp. audio legends you are i think you could setup obs with a interface and mic properly. pity. 10y old game streamers do a better job.
I was George's assistant on EWF's All 'n All album. He never yelled at me, never made me cry, and boy, did I learn a lot-and I'm still learning.

Hey Jim Bob!
Professional video interviews remind me of the best of public access. I love the learning.
That's honestly a great way to describe what RUclips is. A modern-day take on public access TV
great interview! All engineers should learn from what Mr Massenburg said. Dynamic control instead of compression.
There's more than one way of doing things

Compression is dynamic control...

I'll check em out finally

Thanks for the Madeleine Peyroux hint - I loved her music from the first recording on - and this is really a very fine recording : ))
thanks for mentioning her name.....couldn't figure out the last name. Great sounding stuff
Great man 👌 Patrick from INDIA 😊

👊 🙂👌 Great fun. Ta Bobby and George.
Loved this episode. Would love to get in touch with George to pick his brain more!

28:17 I wonder if he’s talking about Dirk Ulrich? 🤔 The founder of Brainworx and Plugin Alliance.
Narrator: He is.
Wow on the nose ! I salute you guys!
Genius in mixing

Not sure who these guys are but that's Ann Mincieli @ :34!!!

He did albums by Little Feat Waiting for Columbus and Let It Roll.
Please interview Manny Marroquin. I am sure we will come away with lots of knowledge and positive vibes :).
Does anyone know what model Panasonic he’s bragging on? I want some of the best faders ever made. 😊
He's talking about the faders on the old Sony Oxford console.
@@BobbyOwsinskiMedia 'cause he had one lying around, like you do 🤣
Not my favorite guy, but definitely makes one of my favorite compressors
George hasn't changed in 50 years. lol😂
22:22 yup
He's pretty high on himself
He IS the "father of the parametric EQ" after all. Have you ever used one?
Well, when you can back it up... (and he can).
❤
uhhhhhh I don't think manny is going to take that as a compliment 😂😂😂😂
Talking about high quality audio trough the worst sounding voice channel I heard in a while.... what was that about?
🤕
I hope that Ukrainian guy gets the message and hooks up with George
This dude has opinions 😂
slamming manny and glenn.,.... old guys don't hold back.
He even said the 1176 is bad, LOL
@@RealHomeRecording He said HIS 1176 is bad ;-)

He was talking about the actual sound at the actual concert not live recordings.
This is like listening to Abe Simpson.
Educator? Oh! You mean “Teacher” 🙄🙄🙄🙄
Apart from the interesting content, this interviews audio quality is horrible

It happens. Sometimes we're trying out a new microphone. Or maybe the software messed the audio up?
Either way I've been there and done that.
