    "Roie" comes from German "Reue", meaning repentance or remorse. Ekusupiashion is just Expiacion spelled out in Japanese.

    So as a knight appreciator, I will offer an explanation for Passage of Arms. As I understand, Passage of Arms or Pas d'Armes does refer to the kind of tournament combat you described, but also has a secondary connotation particularly in Chivalric Romances. It was used not just to describe that form of combat, but a kind of activity in knight errancy in which a knight would choose a location (crossroads, bridge, literal pass in the mountains) to defend and challenge any other knights who came along. It's the general trope you see a lot in some Arthurian stories where [insert Round Table Knight here] is travelling along and has to fight a random knight as a part of their quest. Or, more humorously, the Black Knight of Monty Python fame. With this in mind, the name makes a lot of sense, because it's in effect the WoL as one of these errant knights choosing to hold a position against all comers.

    There’s something about how JRPGs and specifically Final Fantasy will just lift terms from anywhere which I find fun. White Mage is all over the place which I love. It’s got Benediction and Plenary Indulgence from Christianity, Tetragrammaton from Kabbalah, Temperance which I assume comes from the four Christian cardinal virtues but which I associate more with tarot. This was such a cool video, I’d love to see more!

    I am currently petting TWO CATS!
    That said, "Paladin" is known just as "Knight" in jp. Which is interesting, since a Holy Knight job does already exist in FF, and in games semi-canon to 14 as well, being the Ivalice games. Templars also feature in my favorite FF, Bravely Default, with similarly divine-named skills and even just straight-up Rampart lol.

      PLD being named as simply Knight in the JP version is primarily why their ARR and HW kits are so mundane and also why the job’s story quest is rather mundane as well. In a way, it’s thanks to this mistranslation and the outcry by the Western fanbase that gave PLD its magical abilities starting in Stormblood.

    Ability names differ greatly between languages. Scholar comes to mind where the German words for Biolysis, Expediant and Emergency Tactics are "Causae et Curae" (an ancient book about treating afflictions), "Sturm und Drang" (a movement in literature) and "Apotropaion" (a magical artifact or image to ward of evil gods) respectively. This gets even worse when comparing spell names in Japanese where Scholar spells reference battle tactics, or so I was told.
    So, it absolutely makes sense to look at ability names in all languages.
    Spell names are also a good way to track how a job fantasy has changed over the years. Again, Scholar went all over the place while Paladin mostly kept its job fantasy in tact.

    • @Ailuromage
      @Ailuromage  2 месяца назад +1

      Also because Scholar and by extension, Summoner have seen gameplay changes too over time. I guess it's not easy trying to keep it all together in several languages

    When you think in terms of knights duties in religion and their use in battle, the terms that are used aggressively make more sense. Killing your enemies can be seen as atonement. They are atoning for their sins with their life. As for confessing, sacrificing is tied to confession. In the Old Testament, you confessed your sin and sacrificed an animal. Your sin separates you from God and only by the taking of a life can your sin be cleansed and you brought back into God's presence. Nowadays, Christians don't have to sacrifice animals because Jesus' death on the cross is the ultimate sacrifice. Because he willingly went to the cross, sincere repentance and prayer are enough to bring you back in line with God. So when you think of that in terms of knighthood and think about "righteous" campaigns like the Crusades, knights are basically cleansing non-believers, forcing them to repent and atone with their lives. As for Passage of Arms, I think the literal interpretation you mentioned, No Weapons, works just fine. He's not using a weapon, he is being a shield protecting those behind him.

    So being a player of FFXI, I recognize both Atonement and Expiacion from that game as weaponskills (special attacks you build up Tactical Points to use, similar to TP back in the old days as "melee/ranged MP"). Those were both Sword skills but Expiacion could only be used by Blue Mages, learned by upgrading the BLU Mythic, Tizona (yes, THAT Tizona, Raubahn's weapon). Atonement meanwhile could only be used by a Paladin and was learned from their Mythic weapon, Burtgang. They were likely chosen because they both made sense for nostalgia sake and both were terms meaning to cleanse sins, which Paladins do....by killing monsters. :3

    6:37 I think the connection is actually the MP Regen of both abilities. Perhaps your atonement is what gives you your MP back?

  • @KhumiSunguard
    @KhumiSunguard 2 месяца назад +4

    I can see atonement making some kinda sence, since it gives MP meaning you likely used it (to harm) and are asking for forgiveness, thus getting the MP back.
    Expiacion meaning the same since it also has the give MP effect.
    Now what would that mean, abusing your holy powers (mana spenders) results in the Paladin needing to atone before being able to use them again?
    Never thought about it, good video. Enjoyed the cat.

    There are two posible explanations why they used expiación (they are not exclusive):
    - Atonement is a free translation, meaning, in JP the skill is nowhere close named or has a meaning similar, and as has someone said before, expiación is a Direct translation from the JP skill. So when that skill came out the EN team just have to took it and hope nobody noticed.
    - Expiación came in the Shadowbringers expansion that was filled with Christian themes but also witg Spanish names (there are monsters, hunts and places).
    Thanks for the video btw. :)

    Paladin is actually just Knight in the Japanese version, and the name change was done by the localisation teams. SE just used the relation of knights and Christianity by relating the knights of old who served and were appointed by sovereigns, who themselves were annointed by the church. So it is loosely and not fully related to Christianity, and things that don't make sense were bound to pop up here and there.

    See, I've always thought of the names of a lot of the abilities as a sort of battle prayer along the lines of "Forgive mine enemies, for they do not know and forgive myself for what must be done in the protection of mine allies." Granted, there's no capital G god in the world setting, and the character is a free paladin with no lord, so the praying is likely towards the self and the higher ideals a paladin would like to be able to follow outside of the violence.
    Or, maybe I've got my head up my own hind end. :P

    Paladin got a pretty drastic rework just last year, so its unlikely to change all that much with DT. Seems like the other tanks aren't getting changed much either.
    The naming conventions are a little funny. Abilities like Intervene and Expiacion were added after similarly named Intervention and Atonement. I wonder what decisions are made when translating the original names into English?
    Not 100% related, but it reminds me of BLM's spell naming. In Japanese it's the traditional "Fire > Fira > Firaga" but in English it's just "Fire I > II > III"

    Even if you factor in the idea that it was supposed to be named “knight”, they really leaned into the “holy warrior” aesthetic from HW onwards, and yet you can’t actually “smite” your enemies.

    Holy Spirit: Jesus is "The Word" (John chapter 1), and the Bible itself (or rather the Word contained within) is likened unto a sharp sword that pieces the heart of the enemy and those who follow him. But yet, for the believer, the Bible (or, rather the Word) is your Bread and Butter. An ability that hurts your enemies and heals yourself is perfect for the name.
