I think the interpretation of baluchuri with regards to the Bengali drape is erroneous. In the traditional Bengali drape, a key chain is tied to one end of the palla and that is flung back on the left shoulder. As a result the entire palla will be visible in the front from knee or ankle length all the way till the left shoulder. Now if the woman chose to use the part of the saree at the back to cover her head as a ghoonghat or just her bare right shoulder (Bengali women did not wear a blouse untill colonial times), more of the saree right next to the palla would be on display, which will probably explain why it is longer than the usual palla. The current most frequently worn saree drape ( nivi) was not worn in Bengal untill 1900s very likely after women education started and women regularly started going to colleges and universities.
