Drums & Coffee!
🥁☕🙌
Rocco Prestia and David Garibaldi - my all-time favourite go to rhythm section!!!!
100%
TOP is STILL playing fifty years later. See them live when you can, you won't be disappointed whether you're a musician or not.
That’s amazing alright
@@AndrewRooneyDrums55 years and counting. I’m seeing my 106th tower show on Sunday.
Probably the most confusing, yet coolest sounding drum groove ever. It really messes with your mind! David is a beast! 🥁👑
Definitely. How do you come up with this!? 🤣🤯
One of my all-time favorites. His touch is sublime. Check out "Soul Vaccination", "What is Hip", "Soul with a Capital S"
I believe he said Zigaboo was his biggest influence. Good call, Andrew!
Wow! Thanks!
Yes David is a slippery customer!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Perfectly put. 👍🏻
...the "sax player" is Emilio Castillo. He and the bari sax player (Doc Kupka) write most of TOP's charts. Love your analysis, this coming from a brass player who started on drums (with real animal skin heads) at a young age (went to brass when my left hand just couldn't keep up!).
i once started to drool at a ToP concert because i was so focused at the amazing groove and interlocked riffs/beats/lines of all the instrument. thankfully i noticed early enough 😅
that has never happened at any other concert. only David Garibaldi and Tower of Power could make that
A glorious puzzle of a drum groove :)
Yay! Thanks, mate. Looking forward to your 100k subs landmark. Well deserved. Here’s to the next 100k!!
Thank you for this David is a giant I have seen him live in different situations his interpretation of time signatures amazing 😍 use of ghost notes independents a master at his craft. I grew up with Jazz/Funk/Fusion. Billy Cobham Tony Williams Steve Gadd Vinnie Colauita Terry Bozzio..... And David is on my list of true originals once again Great Choice. Can't forget Neil Peart
Another super funky drummer ìs mike Clark, check out "god made me funky "from the headhunters.
Glad you make these videos, it makes me discover new musicians.
Music to my ears!
very cool, i always love to hear something that's simultaneously groovy yet challenging with the timing
The Jam Master it is.& I've seen em do the Horn Pyramid Intro numerous times years ago.
Add them to a band I would love to see live
Definitely Phil
Saw them on their 50th. Great times....
"East Bay Grease" was the name of ToP's first album. It was raw, funky, and "greasy."
Thanks!
Not my bag but talent is talent. Thanks for the upload and quality content! 🤘👽😎
Love me some Garibaldi... Simply attempting to get those left hand accents and left hand ghost notes have greatly improved my beginner left hand skills. I think Drumeo's Garibaldi: Building Coordination drum lesson is a must watch (at least for me). It covers some basic sticking techniques, as well as getting into how his thinking worked on some songs... such as a basic salsa foot practice became Oakland Stroke... ...and swiss triplets... ....and how to use paradiddles / fiveadiddles / sevenadiddles as building blocks to build a pattern of 7 or 9 or 10 or 11 or ... and not lose 1.
Anyway, at 34:05 he discusses the song you covered and has notation.
Thanks so much to the person who requested this, (I hadn't seen this performance.)
YT usually deletes my posts with links, but here is a link to the discussion / notation excerpt for this song:

"good luck covering this" -- genius comment!
This isn't too hard of a groove to work out for myself. After Hours...that is a beast of a Garibaldi groove.
HAHA! He's so comfortable too!
Oh Hell yeah 👍👍
Andrew, if you really want to hear some classic Garibaldi, check out Soul Vaccination as well as Oakland Stroke! Rocco, their legendary bass player who played on all those old classics, said, on Oakland Stroke, he had no idea where the one was and would listen for two open high hats as his cue to play! Pretty wild stuff!
Your just finding out how bad ass the Tower and DG are? Hello!!!
This video should be required in every HS band class in America
Skipped the beginning, went straight to the performance. Was confused on where the 1 was. Went back to the start to figure it out and got the the anecdote! Ok guys, I've got a lifetime of listening to prog, metal, jazz, pop, classical, you name it. This track really throws me off! (currently listening to the original album track) Edit: After sometime figuring out the drums, it's everything else that throws me. I would never have come up with this. Don't know why the vocals are where they are.
Man he’s a freak.
Sadly, David has retired from Tower of Power, though we are sure to hear more from him.
Those cane sticks probably sound 'that good' because David is not slamming - he is hitting at moderate volume and then pulling off, letting the drums respond. Also, aside from his articulate sticking he is on Yamaha drums. Thanks to RUclips clips with the likes of David, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Paul Brochu (UZEB, Gino Vannelli in the 90s) etc., I, a Sonor player, think it safe to say that Yamaha is definitely one of the consistently best sounding brands today. Nice hardware, too.
If there was ever a great reason to learn paradiddles, David Garibaldi is it. Steve Gadd, too. There is nothing technically difficult in playing 'On the Serious Side' or 'What is Hip'...though have a machine-like mind does help. They are essentially variations of rhythmic themes utilising the same fundamentals - singles and double, primarily in paradiddle variations. So rather than gasping in awe, drummer should simply grasp what is happening and get to work. That is what David does - he is constantly studying and learning. He's a serious kinda guy.
I made a typical Springy comment . I deleted it . I was trying to be funny .
What I should have concentrated on was how amazing this performance is .
Inspirational .
Peace and love ✌ 💚
Yup super hip stuff.
You are allowed silly comments... I make them all the time :)
Decades later I still can't play the goshdarned "Oakland Stroke"...
seems like you aint done found the stroke 😉
@@La_sagne like the man said on the video, it's hard enough finding "the one."
RUclips channel drummerszone has vid that really shows off his grip and wrist action: David Garibaldi: What is Hip? - Live with Tower of Power (10/10). Tokyo Groove Jyoshi does a cover of it that's VERY creative (studio version with Shinobu Kawashima on shamisen). Unfortunately for your channel, it's not the best example of drummer Yuriko Seki's talent.
Need some more Garibaldi!!
Are those hot 🔥 stck?
