I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.
I mostly use Purple heart wood in a stabilized form to make knife and the occasional axe handle. In that form it's a tough wood to work but in an unstabilized version like this it's no more difficult than any other hard wood. Now, having said that, it will get hot and burn if you don't keep an even speed on the cutting blade, that's for powered tool obviously. The other issue is expense, people who have it for sale are very proud of it, shall we say?
WOW; The craftsmanship is unmatched. the more you kept building the more i couldn't wait to see the finished product. Who needs those modern factory table which you got creativity and old school craftsmanship.
I bought this as a gift for my friend ruclips.net/user/postUgkxcZqgZ8Ynkiz5n_LxIWRlAicuzmz5kCHG who is just starting out in the world of wood work. He loves it!! There is a great section on different wood and what to use for what kind of job and a similar section for tools as well. The projects in it are things you probably would have a go at with clear instructions, pictures, videos and diagrams throughout. Great for a beginner/amateur wood worker.
I've watched this video so many times. Haven't found anything as gorgeous and built like this bench. After a year of searching for a workbench to mimic, this is the one I would love to build. I'm carefully going to attempt to build one like this, but smaller to fit my garage. Don't know if I'll succeed, but I'm going to try. I think it's worth the money to spend and more. I will have to come up with my own dimensions of course, and give it a whirl. Thank you so much for sharing this remarkable piece of work.
20 min video for something that is going to last you a lifetime, No problem,. A pleasure to watch and some interesting approaches to the design. I wish I could have your confidence on some of those cuts !! Great use of 20 mins, many thanks.
That is a great looking workbench. The functionality of it along with the pride of building it yourself makes it even more outstanding! I'm completely envious. If it could be dry fitted and shipped in pieces I'd be intrigued enough to contemplate buying one. Thanks for sharing.
This is freaking amazing. I was totally enthralled with every little detail. I love your craftsmanship, and that purple heart, such a nice flare. You are a stud, and I'm jealous as hell. My workbench suddenly looks ghetto. Thank you so much for taking the time to make the video of the entire process. Your style will help me with future projects. Skate or die!
Out of the many benches if seen built this is bu far one of my favorite ones. The joinery and use of bow-tie accents and the use of my favorite wood Purple heart makes for a gorgeous end product. While i cant justify spending that much on a bench, if he has it to spend, great. It will be used by his desendents for generations to come.
I started watching and thought, gee it's a work bench because of the little details. I then became utterly captivated with the time, care, precision, and just utter craftsmanship in your work. I have never seen someone work a hand plane the way you do. Few people these days take this much pride in their work. Well done. It came out truly beautiful.
Great job buddy. I'm probably like alot of men and feel with the right tools & the right amount of patience i cld also create a beautiful piece like that....then reality sets in. Again, well done. You should be proud of yr skills. Thanks for sharing.
Great project! It's refreshing to see a woodworker who has daily client-production experience and knows where to take his time and where a screw and plywood will do just fine. I'll never get over seeing those beautiful bright purple heart shavings. Keep up the great work!
It shouldn't't do with your logo. It's actually rather nice; got this da Vinci feel about it. By the way, I'd say there's more geometry than maths involved here. Cheers
I'm a little confused about the thumbs down on this video. Hate to sound repetitive also, but the Purple Heart accent sets it off nice. Never heard of you, but you came up in my video feed today. Awesome work and videos, bro.
I love that you went for it and used Purple Heart for the accents. I think it's amazing. It makes it your space, and anyone with eyes will appreciate it for years. Excellent build, video. I subscribed.
Good god man! You have balls of steel! You chose to make a video that had dowel joints and dovetails. You have failed to use any pocket hole jigs from any US manufacturers. Your time on RUclips is limited. Oh yeah, I'm really envious of the bench you made too.
What inspiring work. Have watched this WAY too many times. Should be out in the shop building my OWN. Question: HOW did you get that polished surface on your chisels??? Understand the flat side, but even to TOPS of your chisels are polished. It LOOKS like a huge amount of work, if with water stones. Would love to know! Excellent work!
HI, thanks! as for chistles sorry to say they came polished with a lacquer on them. lacquer is now chipping off so we'll see if i can be bothered keeping it up. although i get the same finish on the bevel with 4000 grit stone so i guess you could just work your way through grits then use a polish paste then spray lacquer and they be good for a couple of years.
Stubai chisels! Had never heard of them before your mention. However,I ordered a set, sight unseen, because I reasoned that anyone who paid as much attention to quality and detail as KingPost would buy NOTHING but the best. I am in your debt, sir!
Supplementing Jatoba for purple heart can work quite nicely. The finish is more of a red accent but is good sunlight, the Jatoba almost looks purple. Jatoba is much easier on knives. Doesn't have that rich purple but it has way better grain lines than purple heart imo.
It really didn't seem long to me. It's fascinating and awing to watch you work. I hope that in the near future, since you're getting more comfortable with YT, that you will verbally walk us through your steps and/or provide full plans (which you can make after the build and sell.)
HI , Thanks! Not sure if my accent is any good for voice overs!. I do try to make the vids a step by step process but Ill think about some added talking breaks. Yea I have had a couple of requests for plans so will look into it. cheers
That Triton router is a behemoth! Beautiful bench, Ian's you showed some very cool techniques, especially the use of the circular saw for making the locking dadoes. Great job!
If a ever build something like this it won't be in my workshop, too pretty to scuff it up. I guess old school craftsmanship never gets old. Amazing piece of art!
Jim Cohoon I haven't worked with usa pine so not sure. our pine very good quality but not that hard. the bench top so far is great. it has some dents and scraps but in general fine.
NZ pine is good quality but it is not hard. Quite soft. This can be an advantage with a woodworkers bench because the bench will dent and not your hardwood work piece.
You are very skilled in woodworking and it was a real pleasure to watch your video. I'm planning to make a similar bench for myself sooner or later and yours will definitely be a source of inspiration. You say "thanks for watching"... No, thank YOU for sharing!
By the time I start such a huge project several months will have passed but I will try my best to remember. Right now I still have to build my shop, make up the electrical installation and organize my different work spaces. Well, I'd like to know something... are you an amateur or a professional in woodworking?
Amateur American woodworker(living in Normandy, France,) just found your channel(also REALLY enjoy watching another Aussi, Steve Hay,) and you do some terrific work. Being from California, also like watching people WORKING IN T-SHIRTS AND SHORTS...cheers...rr
Just wanted to say, a very informative, inspiring and encouraging video that shows what you can do when you've got the skills and attributes of a seriously good woodworker. I learned a lot and soaked up a boat load of inspiration. The care over the chisel work for the dovetail joints near the end of the video is remarkable. You probably think it's routine to you. Purple heart is also a beautiful wood.
one of the nicest workbenches on the internet. love the contrast of the pine and purpleheart. also a very nice front vise, "veritas" I think? also loved the drawer carcass, nice fit.......
I tip my hat to you sir...very well done. I hope you and the generations that follow enjoy that wonderful piece of woodwork because the quality is such that it will last generations.... One thing that build shows is you have great stamina....a lot hand planing in that video. Its great to see such a determined spirit. Your good health to enjoy...................greetings from Ireland.
I make a living as a cabinet/ furniture maker. Dude, I am extremely impressed with your freehand skills with a circ saw. You are a craftsman. Very nice.
Love the sliding dovetail for attaching the top to the trestle legs. You could use one fastener to secure the top to the legs and this would allow for wood movement. A bit finicky to get this right but boy, sure looks good. I also like the bow tie connectors of the ends. Also a bit finicky but that is what craftsmanship is all about, isn't it?
Thanks , I really love working at it. With my sliding dovetail bench top connection I can see on a daily basis how much the top expands and contracts. Which can be up to 4mm a day!
That was quite the project! Nice work. It's changed my idea about the workshop bench I will be putting together. The joinery work and Purpleheart look extraordinary. (The Purpleheart is too dear here in the States to be considered for this kind of project.) Kia ora.
Kia ora, thanks , i have heard that a few times about the price of purple heart. one of the timber reps was in just the other day and said purple heart is currently at $3000 a cubic meter which puts it a couple hundred cheaper than usa Ash!!
Beautiful video, Kingpost. The bench looks great. The color contrast is a good idea. But thanks for the tip and indeed there where you did the dovetail connection for the drawer. The scribe transmission with a plane blade I known not. :-)
That is beautiful. I will have to watch it a few times to understand just what you are doing. I don't think that I should try this on my first time out as a woodworker. I am seventy four and have always loved wood. I think that your Wood Bench deserves a place on you to express your talents on your next venture into tattooing.
Thanks, you can always simplify it down to what you feel is achievable. I say go for it if you can. ha that's an interesting idea for a tattoo , cheers
Always good to see kiwis flying on the YToob. Really nice hand joint work and great result. I too would like to congratulate you on the massive dovetail joints to affix the table top to the base, very well done!!
It is a working bench that if taken care for will be lasting for the next generations and a act as constant reminder, to all using it, of the value of true quality. A reminder to be proud over the work done over the day when no shortcuts have been taken. First video I've seen from this channel but now a given subscriber, inspiring work! Greetings from Germany
I thought at the beginning the video was a bit long. But with that crazy pine vs purple combination I had to give it a go. Boy am i happy i watched the video all the way through. An absolutely beautiful workbench and i loved the video. gave me alot of ideas and a few new tricks up my sleeve! JEALOUS! :-) but thanks!
What an excellent piece, so good to see someone using the traditional woodworking skills like hand made dovetails, great to watch all you do on here, thanks.
Very impressive process! Love the purpleheart drawer fronts and vice jaws. And the sliding dovetail where the legs meet the bottom of the top is sweet. Thumbs up. I'm in the process of building a 5' bench. Inspiring. Nice shop. Great work.
+KingPost TimberWorks Really? thx a lot. I'm a beginner though, not sure I can get much out of the sketchup. I'm one of those step by step kind of guys. But I will certainly try my best. email is tonybp77@yahoo.com. Let me know the price. I'll pay. Thanks again.
Reminds me of "this old house" with Norm Abraham. Now that is a serious bench or should i say piece of furniture.Wow your certainly a skilled man,More power to your elbow my friend.
Most admirable. Your attention to detail re design & appearance, construction, and fit & finish is indeed quite remarkable. That you take the time at every step to ensure perfection is the sign of a true master craftsman. You've raised the lowly workbench up to the level of fine cabinetry.
Very nice build. I would make one minor change, and that would be a maple top. I know that not everyone can afford it, but it is much more durable than pine. GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!
I've watched many videos looking for ideas to incorporate in my future bench build. You've inspired me to up my own expectations. So many fine details that are unique, functional, and look amazing. You're an artist!
Beautiful Work! I am not a woodworker, more like a electronics diy fanatic, but this really inspires me to plan and build my own workplace! thanks for that!
One of the finest benches I've seen. Just finished an English style bench. Mine Is NOT my dream bench, but definitely gives me an idea how much thought went into your design. Congrats!
A great build and a heritage tool very well made. At this time there are 26 people who dislike this video, they must be very skilled video producers and wood workers, or they may need a little more detail for the various stages of the build. Keep up the good work and your accent is not a negative point on this video, as witnessed with the spoken intro that you use before you go into the build.
Beautiful workmanship. Like the extensive use of hand tools in the finish of the tops. Really nice joints especially where you attached the purple heart. This wood is beautiful. Such an interesting selection of contrasting colors. The different tools and free movement on the components is badass as well. Thanks for sharing this, only one question, is the purple heart timber a good hard working surface. I have never heard of it. It reminds me of cocobolo Janka 2500-+.
I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. I can't imagine how many blades, bits, and sharpenings you went through with all that purple heart. Bravo my friend! what an amazing build! Cheers!
HI , yea fairly frequent sharpening ... a lot. thanks for watching !
Love the purple heart drawers. I implemented that into my own bench. I love it.. I'd post a picture but not sure how. Maybe email?
I mostly use Purple heart wood in a stabilized form to make knife and the occasional axe handle. In that form it's a tough wood to work but in an unstabilized version like this it's no more difficult than any other hard wood. Now, having said that, it will get hot and burn if you don't keep an even speed on the cutting blade, that's for powered tool obviously.

A thing of beauty. Obsoletely love this bench.
WOW; The craftsmanship is unmatched. the more you kept building the more i couldn't wait to see the finished product. Who needs those modern factory table which you got creativity and old school craftsmanship.
Kevin Ashby thanks!

I keep coming back to this. Great skill and beautiful selection of timbers!
Thanks!

David Stanton When are you going to make one David?
20 min video for something that is going to last you a lifetime, No problem,. A pleasure to watch and some interesting approaches to the design. I wish I could have your confidence on some of those cuts !! Great use of 20 mins, many thanks.
love the bench! beautiful jointwork and excellent choice of lumber! I'm sure future generations will appreciate it as well. 👍
thanks!
That is a great looking workbench. The functionality of it along with the pride of building it yourself makes it even more outstanding! I'm completely envious. If it could be dry fitted and shipped in pieces I'd be intrigued enough to contemplate buying one. Thanks for sharing.
thanks, , thats possible ! have just finished one to be shipped to australia in one pice.
This is freaking amazing. I was totally enthralled with every little detail. I love your craftsmanship, and that purple heart, such a nice flare. You are a stud, and I'm jealous as hell. thanks for shearing

Wow that's an absolutely amazing brilliant job you have done, beautiful bench, great job, Roy from England., best wishes.
Gosh man...so well done. Beautiful bench. Love the Purple Heart dovetails.
Great job buddy. I'm probably like alot of men and feel with the right tools & the right amount of patience i cld also create a beautiful piece like that....then reality sets in.

HI, thanks. i just use what i have with the tools that i have, and clients seem to love it. so you just keep going with what works.
Absolutely awesome. The math involved in this build gives me a huge headache, well done!
It shouldn't't do with your logo. It's actually rather nice; got this da Vinci feel about it. By the way, I'd say there's more geometry than maths involved here. Cheers
Beautiful workmanship. Your video was quick and to the point as well. I like that. Thanks.
Bad-ass workbench, good job!
@Frank Here are some great woodworking plans if you're interested: HootWood. com
This is the 3rd time i've watched this video, I just love the craftsmanship and just how gorgeous the wood choices compliment each other.
Fucking Rad!!! I gotta say I'm envious of your skills, but your tools make me full on jealous...😉
Very nicely done. Not much talking but a wealth of craftsmanship and techniques that add to the visual eye candy!! Thanks for sharing! Subscribed!
I'm a little confused about the thumbs down on this video.
Hate to sound repetitive also, but the Purple Heart accent sets it off nice.
Never heard of you, but you came up in my video feed today. Awesome work and videos, bro.

Fantastic job creating a beautiful workbench....love the purple heart and both vises!
Just awesome. Nice work.

Thank-you for the kind response . May I ask only one more question, what BRAND and MODEL are they? Thanks again.....
HI They are Stubi from Austria, i got them here www.thewoodworks.com.au/
Stubai chisels! Had never heard of them before your mention. However,I ordered a set, sight unseen, because I reasoned that anyone who paid as much attention to quality and detail as KingPost would buy NOTHING but the best. I am in your debt, sir!
oh cool, they will do you well!
Beautiful. Very impressive work. That bench will be around for many lifetimes. All the details with the purple heart makes it pop
cheers!
Purple Heart looks awesome, but I find it a bit tougher to work with, and tough on my tools.
yip i find i need freshly sharpened 50deg bevel to get a good cut on my planes.
Supplementing Jatoba for purple heart can work quite nicely. The finish is more of a red accent but is good sunlight, the Jatoba almost looks purple. Jatoba is much easier on knives. Doesn't have that rich purple but it has way better grain lines than purple heart imo.
wow really a Dream of a workbench... Gratulation for dis job ... and big Kompliment for.
+Luis Stanker thank you
I know its long,, there is a fair bit to get through....
+KingPost TimberWorks Pffft. Subscribed.
+Soren Cornell thanks!
Yea I have had a couple of requests for plans so will look into it. cheers
I like the use of a plane blade for marking your dove tails, might have to knick that idea
That Triton router is a behemoth! Beautiful bench, Ian's you showed some very cool techniques, especially the use of the circular saw for making the locking dadoes. Great job!
If his BENCH looks like this, I can only imagine what the rest of his work looks like
Very nice, the dovetails too with 2 colors of wood. I think that would have looked nice showing on the front.
Wow that deserves a sub...nice work.
cheers !
If a ever build something like this it won't be in my workshop, too pretty to scuff it up. I guess old school craftsmanship never gets old. Amazing piece of art!
Is your New Zealand pine hard like the U.S. southern yellow pine? Just wondering how the pine top is performing for you?
Jim Cohoon I haven't worked with usa pine so not sure. our pine very good quality but not that hard. the bench top so far is great. it has some dents and scraps but in general fine.
Thanks. Appreciate the reply. Seems like pine is an excellent choice for one short on money for a hardwood top.
No, thank YOU for sharing!
thanks. would be cool to see what you come up with. ...
By the time I start such a huge project several months will have passed but I will try my best to remember. Right now I still have to build my shop, make up the electrical installation and organize my different work spaces. Well, I'd like to know something... are you an amateur or a professional in woodworking?
well I build custom pieces for a living but still don't consider myself professional.
Красавчик!

The way the top slid on with the sliding dovetail means you are either a magician or a wizard with the measurering tape. Excellent work!
Ha , thanks , I think it was a fluke! we'll soon see cause I have just had an order for one....
the bench cost almost the same as your festool domino tool so it was cheap xD
Carlos Azevedo Hahaha right!!!

So true
Just wanted to say, a very informative, inspiring and encouraging video that shows what you can do when you've got the skills and attributes of a seriously good woodworker. I learned a lot and soaked up a boat load of inspiration. The care over the chisel work for the dovetail joints near the end of the video is remarkable. You probably think it's routine to you. Purple heart is also a beautiful wood.
+Gary Semley oh cool thanks
it's too nice for a workshop
Derek Martin exactly my comment; I won't put that in my workshop. Too nice to scratch and dent!
one of the nicest workbenches on the internet. love the contrast of the pine and purpleheart. also a very nice front vise, "veritas" I think? also loved the drawer carcass, nice fit.......
Thanks, I just received an order for one, so I get to do it all again!
Cool ... good job. I hope you sell a thousand of those.
Extremely well done! I really like that you aren't afraid to pick up a hand tool. Nice blind dovetails.
Very nice... I like the idea of sliding dovetail top connection and the brass slides for the tail vice. Different then others.
Best work bench Iv'e ever seen! Absolutely love the purple heat wood accents and drawer fronts. Thanks for sharing.
It's nice you were able to use your workbench to finish your workbench. You internet woodworkers work so much faster than the rest of us.
Nice looking bench. You must enjoy using it everyday. Well done, thanks for sharing.
Yep master craftsman at work. Every tool for every job, not a work bench but a work of art I would never dare use it.
I make a living as a cabinet/ furniture maker. Dude, I am extremely impressed with your freehand skills with a circ saw. You are a craftsman. Very nice.
HI, cheers, i spent about 7 years full time as a builder so got pretty handy with one.
HI , yea that's just what I did. one screw in the back edge into the dovetail. also means I can take the top off and move the bench if need be, cheers
Ive been watching over 50 workbench videos on RUclips. Yours Sir is without doubt one of the best!

Outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Give us a minute or two of just looking at this brilliant piece from different angles ! :)
Beautiful video, Kingpost.
The bench looks great.
The color contrast is a good idea.
But thanks for the tip and indeed there where you did the dovetail connection for the drawer.
The scribe transmission with a plane blade I known not. :-)
Thanks , yes I just made that up as I went, as there was very little room. worked well.
Fantastic build. I love the color choices.
This bench is just too pretty to use! I would be afraid to get it dirty! Beautiful!!
Wow, amazing craftsmanship. The Purple Heart looks fantastic with the pine. Truly inspiring!
I had to watch it twice! Brother, you got mad wood skills!!! I wish I had half your talent lol... Looking forward to watching more of your work!
Always good to see kiwis flying on the YToob. Really nice hand joint work and great result. I too would like to congratulate you on the massive dovetail joints to affix the table top to the base, very well done!!

I thought at the beginning the video was a bit long. But with that crazy pine vs purple combination I had to give it a go.
Boy am i happy i watched the video all the way through. An absolutely beautiful workbench and i loved the video. gave me alot of ideas and a few new tricks up my sleeve!
JEALOUS! :-) but thanks!
cool , thanks !
Slick idea using a dovetail to attach table top to side supports. Great work.
I really like the contrasting wood! Very nice work bench.
Inspiring. Nice shop. Great work.
hi,cool thanks. would like to see what you come up with!
WoW, just WOW, Wish I had that talent. Love that purple heart. Expensive yes? Now all you need is to sell the plans...hehe..get me hands on those. lol
You can have the sketchup file if you want, just message me your email. cheers
Truly beautiful -- The bench and your craftsmanship. Many thanks from Santa Barbara, California. I'm your newest subscriber.
thank You!
Most admirable. Your attention to detail re design & appearance, construction, and fit & finish is indeed quite remarkable. That you take the time at every step to ensure perfection is the sign of a true master craftsman. You've raised the lowly workbench up to the level of fine cabinetry.
Ten Minute Drum Solo thanks!
Wow! Awesome! Very nice and wonderful craftsmanship! Looks like a great bench! Keep up the great work! Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful Work!
I am not a woodworker, more like a electronics diy fanatic, but this really inspires me to plan and build my own workplace! thanks for that!
Great bench mate, I like the dead man sliding post idea, very handy... in fact it's dead handy! LOL
woow
very good work, lots of technics used and very beautiful final project
One of the finest benches I've seen. Just finished an English style bench. Mine Is NOT my dream bench, but definitely gives me an idea how much thought went into your design. Congrats!
Thanks, yes they do tend to consume the mind!
At about 18:00 mark....great technique on the hand cut blind dovetail. Excellent work!
+Jeffrey Lonigro cheers
Jestem pod wrażeniem. Facet pokazał chyba wszystkie techniki solidnego rzemiosła. Prawdziwy mistrz stolarstwa. Aż miło patrzeć.
I take my hat off to you dear sir. That was amazing! They don't build things like they used to.
25 year carpenter here and that is an absolutely amazing work of art! Very cool
+Todd Crosby thank you!
One beautiful bench..... Enjoyed your video. One day I look forward to having my own...
thanks,
A great build and a heritage tool very well made.
At this time there are 26 people who dislike this video, they must be very skilled video producers and wood workers, or they may need a little more detail for the various stages of the build.
Keep up the good work and your accent is not a negative point on this video, as witnessed with the spoken intro that you use before you go into the build.
cheers!
It reminds me of cocobolo Janka 2500-+.
hi, thanks, purple heart is really hard and a bit difficult to work with too, native to south America I believe. thanks for watching !!
Brilliant! Something to treasure - well done! What's £750 over the next 30 or 40 years - money well spent! Colin
cheers Colin
