Joel is my favourite character. He is a lot older than me but I really relate to the loneliness and isolation that he felt. Growing up with autism and not knowing that until recently always made me feel like I didn’t belong. I just thought it was because I liked stories or writing but there was actually a scientific reason for it. I remember when my parents told me this I was sad so I went inside and played The Last of Us again. This game and Joel specifically are really important to me. When I first played through the game I was in a very bad spot. My uncle had just died and I was heartbroken but seeing Joel be able to move on from the loss of his daughter and find someone to care for again really connected with me. I found myself tearing up at the end because of what I had just witnessed. I was given hope and still to this day that hope has never disappeared. This game truly changed my life and I wouldn’t be the same person I am today without. I’m certainly not perfect but I’ve made a significant effort to try and better myself. Be more optimistic, worry less, control my anger, be grateful for what I have and I saw that Joel was trying to do that as well. In the second game Joel is a much happier and kinder man. He inspired me to become a better person. Thank you Joel. Rest in peace.

It only took 1 game for Joel to solidify his impact as an iconic video game character, it took Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, Nathan Drake, Kratos, John Marston, and Captain Price several games the only one that comes close in my opinion is Arthur Morgan Joel Miller is undoubtedly one of the best well written characters ever.

Never seen a six minute video with the balls to call itself a deep dive. Everything about this just feels like a rushed, passionless recap to get someone ready for the real video that actually does anything that was promised

Joel is a great character, but he did off camera *_intend_* to take advantage of the kindness of others, to steal their stuff, then intended to murder them to avoid any backlash or comeuppance. That's what gave Tommy nightmares. I don't get the argument that those acts weren't intentional as, if they were mere "whoopsies," then Joel wouldn't have had the insight to spot the intentional ambush in Pittsburgh. One of the interesting aspects of TLOU2 is that by the time of Jackson he has reformed enough that he is showing kindness to strangers, who then take advantage of that kindness to get justice for the murder of Anny's father (and for delivering effectively a death blow or near death blow to the Fireflies). A major theme of the games is that people can change. Joel finds his humanity, Abby gives in to her desire for revenge but ultimately abandons that path too, Ellie becomes more brutal in seeking revenge but ultimately pulls back from that darkness.

Not enough people see that from any other person's perspective Joel is a violent and selfish killer, but when Playing as him we have empathy because we seen what he went through.
