You definitely deserve it. I watched your video from beginning to end which is rare for this kind of content (I usually jump straight to comments lol). It's something that comes from the heart, respectful and much of it I can resonate with.
I don't think content/length matters that much. What matters more is if you walk away from the game satisfied. Some games drag out too long or have too much content, which can wear you down by the end.
I agree, and to an extent it really depends on the game. PirateSoftware said something to the same effect that basically the length of the game doesn't matter, it's the quality of the experience. However, I want to give my perspectove on why I feel it's still important as a factor, even if it's not the main thing. For context, at least in my reviews, I only award points for the value critera "Time VS Money" if the content that was presented during that time was a quality product. Theres plenty of media that doesn't respect the viewers time, be it shows, movies, or games, by just padding in fluff for time to compensate for a lack of substance. That behavior doesn't fly with me. I determine whether or not the content was of a given high enough quality usually by how well it scores against all the other criteria in my review. Your game needs to be good in order for the time to be worth it regardless of how long you spent playing it, and so the game has to be good in order for this score to matter. In terms of my stance, it's not super uncommon for a big AAA game nowadays to release with the bare minimum amount of content to scrape by; often locking the true extent of the full game behind microtransactions or battlepasses. The quality of the actual experience may be good, but they just don't give enough of it in general, or they're restricting it to milk their audience. Either way, if another game is equally well made, but is properly fleshed out with more content than the alternative, then that game deserves to be rewarded in comparison to the competition. I also recognize that having a game run for too long, even if it's good, can be a problem. Baldur's Gate 3 is a game I loved, but I felt like it was too long. Finishing a campaign is a genuine commitment. Same thing with Persona games. I have a buddy playing persona 5 royal right now and he still hasn't beaten it nearly 150 hours in, which is insane. However, I'd much prefer a game that gives me way too much than one which gives me too little. And also, for every person like me who prefers consistently faster paced games, or at least games that allow you to determine the pace for yourself, there's someone who loves the long and slow grind to the top. Knowing that that spectrum of perspectives on game length goes both ways, I generally try to shoot for a middle ground when determining if something has met the threshhold for being "long enough." And from a particularly biased point of view, I've rarely ever had a lot of money. So if I'm going to have to spend a lot of money on a game, I want to know that it's going to be a good bang for my buck. If my options are: A. 9/10 quality game that lasts for 5 hours or B. an 8/10 game that lasts for 20 hours, then I'd almost always prefer to go with option B because I know that I'm probably going to get more fun out of it without sacrificing too much in the realm of quality. In the end, buy a game that you think is good or fun. Don't buy something just because it will take a lot of time. But if you're trying to organize games for people qualitatively, then it makes sense to reward good games that give a lot of content, while effectively punishing games that are either good, but skimp the player on content, or bad and pad out for time.
@@lonewolfex Great reply! I agree with most of the points here. Also I think replay value should be factored in as well, a game could be 5-10 hours long but have a lot of replay value making it last much longer.
Maybe longest play time that stays fresh. However, even "fresh" is personal opinion. I start to lose interest when the mechanics get repetitive after dozens of hours. Leveling up anything does not qualify for me. To some, just a new atmosphere or environment keeps it fresh. Not sure how to rate this one, but simply length is not it, IMHO.

honestly it was a 3 way tie with astrobot metaphor refantazio and Elden ring's DLC so if you ask me those 3 deserve game of the year but in this i love how Balatro is first with Astrobot second and then Metaphor refantazio being third :)
It wasn't that close, though? Oh, so, it won Indie, Debut Indie (considering they repeat more often than not...? I like them having a Debut Indie Game category, but maybe have it be Best Non-Debut Indie Game and Best Debut Indie Game...? To prevent redundancy...?) and Mobile. At TGA, those are either borderline (Indie and Debut Indie) or explicit (Mobile) gag categories. Whoop-de-doo, so you're probably 4th or 5th place of 6. (1st: Astro Bot, 2nd: Metaphor (and these two was the fight), 3rd: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, 4th and 5th: Balatro and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, 6th: Black Myth: Wukong.)
The equation of quantity with quality as a marker of value is an unfortunate symptom of the growing tendency to overprioritize consumption and efficiency at the cost of deep, memorable enjoyment. I claim that the length of a game (the amount of "content" it provides, the length of its story) is not correlated with its quality no more than is the length of a book or film. A film's 3-hour runtime does not make it better and therefore worth more than a 90-minute film. A game's price should be commensurate with its cost of production (the cost to fairly pay its developers), not its length. I would rather pay $60 for a 10-hour game made with love, thrilling from start to finish than the same amount for 5 hours of solid story padded with 35 hours of mind-eroding side-quests and traversal. Content volume as perceived value is a mental illness.
I just find it funny that people are letting an award given to a cute little robot ruin their life/mental capacity lmao. Its not that deep. You can have your own GOTY lol
11:45 wait? Wasn't that it have more performance problems on PS5? My 3 years old laptop (RTX 3060 100w) can play it very well since day one, while I heard PS5 players having problem with low fps, stutters, and delay in perf mode because of framegen.
Oh, what a surprise, when the valuation of a game's quality is boiled down to playtime and cost, the indie game that is half the price of the other competitors and is a rogue-like (read: infinite replayability) won.
I have now "pushed the button" thanks to BigTugg! Now what do I get for my reward :D Honestly though, I'm so glad RUclips's random small channel recommendation actually WORKED (for Tugg at least lmao). Really interested in seeing what you have in store for future videos!
I also think there's a category you missed: The devs BEHIND the game. TGA actively favors well-respected devs, or breakout indie devs. Someone like Game Science, while they were breakout stars, also had INSANE problems with sexism actively noted in some reviews by major news outlets. They did have a GOOD chance of winning, but their devs are bad enough that, imo, it should have been snubbed. It just encourages them, or others, to never change, especially when the issues were so public.
A DLC should never be on the list, It doesn't matter how good it is. It's not its own game. Helldivers 2, on the other hand, absolutely should've been on the list. Astro Bot, tho... literally never heard of the game until the nominations were announced. I saw gameplay yesterday. It's just a super Mario Galaxy clone made for PlayStation.
23:41 Black Myth being on either ends for the Critical Score and the Player Score really just sums up their reputation since release 😭 This really was a great video! From the editing down to the writing and explanation of the technicality in scoring, I really enjoyed this analysis! My personal GOTY is Black Myth: Wukong due to cultural importance, but this helped me be more objective with my judgement and appreciate the other nominees 🙌 Imma need to thank bigtuggers for recommending you chief, this was a good watch 🫡
Chances are, you wont see this comment, but in case if you do, i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE A REVIEW ON Death Road to Canada. While i dont got any money to give, it would be a great video to see someone give their oppinion on one of my favorite zombie games.
I just bought balatro today and I can see why it was nominated, before I knew it I was sucked in the gameplay for half an hour and stopped myself before I got too addicted🤣
for me Astro Bot deserving it, in the sea of soulslike and "cinematic' bs games, atleast we've got something that everyone in family can play, while mantaining quality of first party games. but my personal GOTY are (in order). Metaphor -> FFVII Rebith -> Black Myth Wukong -> Shadow of the Erdtree -> Silent Hill 2 -> Sellar Blade -> Rise of The Ronin -> Infinite Wealth -> Persona 3 Reload -> Space Marine 2.. also i also enjoy veilguard though as a fast food type of things
Did I miss something in the calculation? It shouldn't had be like this? (Public) + (Critic) + (Bonus) Balatro: (9.65) + (9.14) + (1.2) = 19.99 Astro Bot: (9.5) + (9.66) + (0.2) = 19.36 Elden Ring DLC: (8.9) + (9.7) + (0.7) = 19.3 Metaphor: (9) + (9.3) + (0.8) = 19.1 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: (9.4) + (8.85) + (0.7) = 18.95 Black Myth Wukong: (9.5) + (8.2) + (0.6) = 18.3 Also, I know that there is not a proper way to avoid this, but there is a huge bias in the critic reviews chosen for some games in this video. I would be fine with a score that was + or - 0.2 in relation to the Metacritic but Elden Ring has a + 0.3 and FF a - 0.35 (thats a LOT, wow in your last list is at a 8.8? thats a - 0.4, thats actually huge). Edit.: Oh I understand what happen with the scores, in the screen with the scores of all games you placed some games in the wrong spot, thats why.
Haven’t watched yet but by the metrics you listed at the start balatro should 100% win Also like you said you definitely shouldn’t play balatro because you will probably end up putting hundreds of hours into it
AstroBot is great and deserved it 🤷♂️. It was the most widely appealing and accessible to anyone in terms of genre and difficulty. 🤷♂️. The game awards is just a popularity contest pretty much but you also have to take into consideration the genre and whether a game is more niche like say a JRPG though popular it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Black Myth as a great game! The boss fights and cut scenes and some moments the scenery was beautiful. But there were a few minor problems some people had myself included. 1.) The bosses were fun but a lot of the in between wasn’t as exciting or interesting even quite repetitive a lot of the time. 2.) The combat though fun in no way felt as good as other games like Sekiro in comparison. Where as AstroBot is great and feels great beginning to end. The only criticism I have for the game is some of the PlayStation so called “ads” for PlayStation merchandise.
5:08 but FF7 is in the Astro Playroom game. The fact is that SE is trying to break all the exclusivities they had (with Sony and Nintendo), and become more of a third party company. With that said, yeah they still should let the cross over happened.
I love how if I click the thing that says "Translate to English," all it does is move the exclamation point over by one space. haha Massive vote of confidence though. Hugely appreciated
I trust your judgment And your reasoning is informative and thorough and honest Which means Astrobot winning goty was not rigged it was the best decision from both sides But I will say that players do not listen to or trust the word of critics Edit: I forgot the bonus round and was surprised of the top contender I’m very glad dlc did not win anything
Using how long a game as a factor for money's worth is not a great way to judge that, a long game doesn't mean a great game. For example, AC Valhalla is the longest AC game and most people would consider it one of the weaker games Also, for money's worth, why wasn't the free DLC released (with promise of more for the next 2 months), not counted for AstroBot? That adds to the value of the game and makes it a longer game too
It was also a factor that amounted to between 1% and 6% of the total score for that reason. It's relevant, but it is far an away an auxiliary criteria, not the main thing determining score. In terms of Astro Bot, I will apologize for my ignorance on that. My understanding of the DLC was that they were mostly just free additional bots, and not additional worlds/levels. You're right in that case, that's on me. In terms of giving this comment the reply I think it deserves, I already basically wrote a book reply to Wiseman108 who left a similar comment if you want to read it.
On the topic of SOTE, it doesn't seem logical to say we're only judging the DLC, not the main game, but then counting the main game into the price. That's disingenuous because if you spend the money for both the DLC and the game, you're getting the value of the DLC and the game, whereas you're presenting it as "you pay for both, only get the value of one", of course it's gonna come out losing like that. The price of the DLC is 40$, that's what that particular content costs, you can't count the cost of the base game but then ignore the value of it and assign the whole price to just the SOTE content. Otherwise by that logic it could also be argued that any game that's exclusive to a console also costs the price of the console if you want to play it...? If we're assuming the player already has the console, then it's only fair to assume they also have the base game if we're talking about an expansion. I understand there being a problem with nominating a DLC as such, I personally don't think neither SOTE or FF14 should've been elegible for GOTY, but if we're deciding to treat it as a separate game, then let's do that properly.
Not only do you need to buy the base-game, you have to almost finish it to both reach the dlc and to be a good level to not instantly get murked unless you're iron pineapple or lenny levels of god gamer.
If we include base game Elden Ring and SOTE, then the other contenders is look like a joke that this year will be Elden Ring Award instead of The Game Award.
idk i still think black myth wukong shoulve won because of the story, details, complex character designs, and graphics lol, tho kinda weird how there was a dlc for goty
This proved player cannot vote because ppl can pick GOTY by just the game look pretty ignore the fact have gameplay problem. Lucky they fixed their game now, imaging they sent the latest version for Critic, I bet it will get better score.
I can’t lie I think that astrobot is undeserving of goty. I haven’t played it. And that’s the problem a game where only the people who bought the PS5 for an honestly unreasonable price get to play the shortest playtime game on the list for a £60 price tag that markets on nostalgia that I personally just don’t have and many others may not have either. The fact that a £40 DLC has it beat in game depth and availability that in itself is attached to another game of the year says volumes. And when comparing it to other goty winners like bg3 or elden ring it’s just not deserving
@@epoopy1 I’m very certain you haven’t played all those game of the year candidates so if you want to play it like that you shouldn’t really be talking either, I’ve watched gameplay of Astro Bot and while it’s fun I personally don’t think it should’ve been game of the year, its all but personally opinion and you should respect it
Saying that FF7 Rebirth being nominated is a controversy is a bit of a stretch. It's a completely different game from the original FF7. Shadow of the Erdtree should not have been nominated. You can't play it without owning the base game and the base game has already had its time in the Sun at the Game Awards.
I'm sorry but the game being accessible to many players or be exclusive shouldn't determine if a game is Goty or not, but the quality of the game. If a game is good it doesn't matter how many systems the game is available.

honestly it was a 3 way tie with astrobot metaphor refantazio and Elden ring's DLC so if you ask me those 3 deserve game of the year but in this i love how Balatro is first with Astrobot second and then Metaphor refantazio being third :)
I liked this video so much, that I watched it on TV with ads, I hope the revenue serves you well my good man XD
Great video!
Ive been Tugged here also
See? You managed to say it in a way that *didnt* make it weird. I'm proud, you proved it's possible.

Pre nerf consort Radahn was different man. He kicked my teeth in for hours since I refused to summon
Big tugg has brought me here
Man this guys getting tugged like crazy
I still don't get how a game that's basically just poker with extra steps got this close to winning game of the year.
Tell me you haven't played Balatro without telling me you haven't played Balatro.
You can literally just buy it for 10 bucks on your phone and see for yourself 🤷
@@SillyfemboyII I did & refunded it
Absolutely brutal haha
It wasn't that close, though? Oh, so, it won Indie, Debut Indie (considering they repeat more often than not...? I like them having a Debut Indie Game category, but maybe have it be Best Non-Debut Indie Game and Best Debut Indie Game...? To prevent redundancy...?) and Mobile. At TGA, those are either borderline (Indie and Debut Indie) or explicit (Mobile) gag categories. Whoop-de-doo, so you're probably 4th or 5th place of 6. (1st: Astro Bot, 2nd: Metaphor (and these two was the fight), 3rd: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, 4th and 5th: Balatro and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, 6th: Black Myth: Wukong.)
you’ve made it to the recommended page
Nice video man super high quality
Astro Bot deserved it
Fax bro it’s so good
Meh
@@neongreen1842 Was it though? Was it better than Mario Odyssey? That didn't win GotY.
Thank you for creating this awesome video and thank you big tug for sending me here!!!
Regarding your Love to deck games, what are your thoughts about gwent?
Im not really into games and i dont know all that much but you have a really engaging voice. Thoroughly enjoyed the video.
I have been summoned by Sir Maximilian Tuggard the third
11:45 wait? Wasn't that it have more performance problems on PS5? My 3 years old laptop (RTX 3060 100w) can play it very well since day one, while I heard PS5 players having problem with low fps, stutters, and delay in perf mode because of framegen.
Tugglet here. I like video, I like channel, I now subscribe to channel.
*salutes*
I have been Tugged
I retroactively consent to this Tugging.
Oh, what a surprise, when the valuation of a game's quality is boiled down to playtime and cost, the indie game that is half the price of the other competitors and is a rogue-like (read: infinite replayability) won.
Tugglets Reporting for duty sir! 🫡
I'm not coming from BigTug, you just showed up in my feed. Good job!
You’re a funny man with funny numbers I like that
Balatro would have been a great upset, NGL seeing an indie game win would have been amazing
I tugged my way here
I have now "pushed the button" thanks to BigTugg! Now what do I get for my reward :D
Honestly though, I'm so glad RUclips's random small channel recommendation actually WORKED (for Tugg at least lmao). Really interested in seeing what you have in store for future videos!
Brother, this lineup is the strongest imo every one of the. Deserved to be there except balatro
Can you imagine if Balatro had won? This AB backlash would have seemed like nothing.
23:41 Black Myth being on either ends for the Critical Score and the Player Score really just sums up their reputation since release 😭
This really was a great video! From the editing down to the writing and explanation of the technicality in scoring, I really enjoyed this analysis! My personal GOTY is Black Myth: Wukong due to cultural importance, but this helped me be more objective with my judgement and appreciate the other nominees 🙌
Imma need to thank bigtuggers for recommending you chief, this was a good watch 🫡
Chances are, you wont see this comment, but in case if you do, i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE A REVIEW ON Death Road to Canada. While i dont got any money to give, it would be a great video to see someone give their oppinion on one of my favorite zombie games.
Big Tugg sent me and I'm glad he did, great video
BigTug brought me here commenting for the algorithm
Astro bot should get points more reducted for availability, being a ps5 exclusive
It's a shame the Wukong update took place after TGA
Great vid, thanks tugg
FH5 92 on metacritic didn't even got a nomination for the goty but most contenders were around 88 ☠
I just bought balatro today and I can see why it was nominated, before I knew it I was sucked in the gameplay for half an hour and stopped myself before I got too addicted🤣
Love the Scott Pilgrim music used in the video :3
for me Astro Bot deserving it, in the sea of soulslike and "cinematic' bs games, atleast we've got something that everyone in family can play, while mantaining quality of first party games. but my personal GOTY are (in order).
The awnser is Astro bot deserved to
Did I miss something in the calculation? It shouldn't had be like this?
(Public) + (Critic) + (Bonus)
Balatro: (9.65) + (9.14) + (1.2) = 19.99
Astro Bot: (9.5) + (9.66) + (0.2) = 19.36
Elden Ring DLC: (8.9) + (9.7) + (0.7) = 19.3
Metaphor: (9) + (9.3) + (0.8) = 19.1
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: (9.4) + (8.85) + (0.7) = 18.95
Black Myth Wukong: (9.5) + (8.2) + (0.6) = 18.3
Also, I know that there is not a proper way to avoid this, but there is a huge bias in the critic reviews chosen for some games in this video.
Tugging it
Nah, it's weird now. You made it weird Joel.
Real asf
Haven’t watched yet but by the metrics you listed at the start balatro should 100% win
Also like you said you definitely shouldn’t play balatro because you will probably end up putting hundreds of hours into it
NOOOOOOOOO IT CANT BE ASTRO BOT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I CANT BELIEVE IT NOOOOOOOOOO
I haven't seen any of your content before and just came to laugh at the salt but honestly this was brilliant
I think Geoff saw this video
Big Tugg approved !
I love how if I click the thing that says "Translate to English," all it does is move the exclamation point over by one space. haha
Massive vote of confidence though. Hugely appreciated
I trust your judgment
And your reasoning is informative and thorough and honest
Which means Astrobot winning goty was not rigged it was the best decision from both sides
But I will say that players do not listen to or trust the word of critics
Edit: I forgot the bonus round and was surprised of the top contender
I’m very glad dlc did not win anything
Using how long a game as a factor for money's worth is not a great way to judge that, a long game doesn't mean a great game. For example, AC Valhalla is the longest AC game and most people would consider it one of the weaker games
Also, for money's worth, why wasn't the free DLC released (with promise of more for the next 2 months), not counted for AstroBot?
Astro bot fans saying it deserves shows that most console gamer are kids in adult body
So industry experts who vote for TGA have a good taste
I would say Metaphor only because Astro Bot is a little on the short side
Damn, is that a mokey mokey deck.
Great video sucks to see Black Myth Wukong not winning GOTY, but hey, congrats to PlayStation for their 30th anniversary and getting GOTY.
idk i still think black myth wukong shoulve won because of the story, details, complex character designs, and graphics lol, tho kinda weird how there was a dlc for goty
This proved player cannot vote because ppl can pick GOTY by just the game look pretty ignore the fact have gameplay problem.
Lucky they fixed their game now, imaging they sent the latest version for Critic, I bet it will get better score.
@kahchunrock5582 This also proved u never played the game and only heard about it from critics
@@Z33RL1 Maybe u should try Astro Bot to see y this is GOTY.
Papa tugg sent me! Great work
I can’t lie
I think that astrobot is undeserving of goty.
If you haven’t played it then don’t judge it, also it being ps5 exclusive doesn’t effect if the game is deserving or not
How is the ps5 price unreasonable?
@@epoopy1 I’m very certain you haven’t played all those game of the year candidates so if you want to play it like that you shouldn’t really be talking either, I’ve watched gameplay of Astro Bot and while it’s fun I personally don’t think it should’ve been game of the year, its all but personally opinion and you should respect it
Unreasonable price? You have a pc or sum?
its not most accessible game of the year
arrived via tugboat
Bro has been tugged
Saying that FF7 Rebirth being nominated is a controversy is a bit of a stretch. It's a completely different game from the original FF7. Shadow of the Erdtree should not have been nominated. You can't play it without owning the base game and the base game has already had its time in the Sun at the Game Awards.
The Sony Awards
I hope its not rude to tug some one but you just gained a subscriber
None of the nominees deserved goty.
I'm sorry but the game being accessible to many players or be exclusive shouldn't determine if a game is Goty or not, but the quality of the game. If a game is good it doesn't matter how many systems the game is available.
