I think it’s the sheer anger and power he clearly put into ringing it-what sold it for me was his hat! The way his hat cocks downward, darkening his eyes. Oh, and all that and he was right in the racist’s face. Keenan is amazing. I think we all take him for granted because he’s not just a cast member, but a part of the institution of _SNL._ Like Lorne Michaels, I can’t think of the show without him. And Iago (cool name, btw) is right, Keenan’s work on the show is so consistent. Sketches are always hit and miss, but Keenan is always reliable. I can’t imagine _SNL_ without him! I bet a lot of fans feel that way.

@@darkprose Bro, your comment nailed it. Keenan Thompson has, at this point, joined SNL legend status. The truth is people work at jobs that may not have a basis in what we as employees believe to be true BECAUSE WE WORK TO LIVE...PAY BILLS...PAY FOR HOUSING AND HEALTH CARE. And wherever a person works, he/she should be treated equally as described by Tile 7. Ever enjoy the Lone Ranger? Well, sir, the show is inaccurately based on a white man when in fact the real person the show is based on is a black man. I'm sure the white actor and his family and future generations enjoying his earnings dont mind and did not want him treated like the black man from which the character was based. THINK just a little. Try it, unless it hurts to much. Dumb Ass!

Oh there are some awkward moments at Colonial Williamsburg. I remember visiting and as we were listening to an in-character re-enactor portraying a free man of color, when in-character "Thomas Jefferson" walked by.
The black re-enactor accurately went out of his way to reassure "Massa Thomas" that although this gathering was technically illegal due to the large number of African-Americans in the crowd (who would likely have been slaves in 1775), "we were just discussing religion and meant no harm."
The white dude portraying Jefferson was so befuddled he damn near broke character, mumbled something about believing in freedom of religion, acted like he'd never heard of slavery, and speed-walked the hell out of there (I suppose to somewhere where he could talk to tourists about the nice things in history rather than slavery).

It's an interesting line that they have to walk, being historically accurate in a place that is literally set up as a living museum specifically so that people can experience what life was like at that period of time, without betraying any of our more enlightened modern attitudes. They do it so well, however. I attended "court" one time at Colonial Williamsburg and got to play a magistrate. The "head magistrate" (the employee setting things up) simply informed us all that, as a woman, I never would have been appointed to that position back in the 18th century, and that was that. We all know that they viewed people of color (and women) as inferior to white men back then, the reenactors acknowledge that, then everyone moves on.
Also, although this skit was HILARIOUS, the boss wearing a modern suit was super distracting. Employees wear period-appropriate clothing and act in a period-appropriate AT ALL TIMES when visible to the public. Even the kids.

Very accurate. But having worked colonial Williamsburg. It's guests.
I worked at one of the Taverns. And white guests would see me and be like " OH! Look there a mixed one. They really are authentic." I was a cook and hated being around people, but every now and then I would help bus. So I had to dress up. Which I loved. But the customer always ruined it for me.
It gets worse. The white customers. I cannot stress that enough, they were always a white couple or family. And say
"We want to real colonial experience. Can we have a black slave serve us?"
My jaw dropped when I heard them say that and I remember Cindy's face dropping too. But more like "ugh, this request again" Cindy was white and tire of that shit.
But Nope, because the meals are expensive that mean excellent tips. Almost every black waiter signed up. Skip got the job, and I was in the back when skip came in. "SKIP? WTF? Why did you take that table?" He was said "because that means those will be good tippers. The can leave up $100 in tips."
At the of the night he gave me $20 of his portions. And I just felt dirty, because I needed for gas to get to my second full time job at the school down the road. I was so angry at myself.

I’m horrified they’d have the balls to ask something like that, and that the staff in charge would let them. I’m relieved Cindy didn’t care for the bullshit.
But don’t feel bad about taking their money. Honestly they deserve to be financially bled dry, and the way I see it it’s less about you swallowing your pride and taking money for something possibly humiliating and more about sticking it to them and them being too stupid to realize you are.

Oddly enough, I've seen them at Renaissance festivals. They're SUPER not-period (for Renaissance England, or Colonial Williamsburg), but hella popular and extremely portable, and most people like a fried carb covered in sugar.
Colonial Williamsburg has restaurants with plausibly period menus (in fact they explain that frankfurters have been around since at least the 13th century!).

They use to have slaves when my dad was in high school and all the high school kids would go fuck around for some extra cash. It was easy to get because you HAVE to be black and obv no one wanted to be a pretend slave. They don’t have any now and they also don’t force the “only white people” can be the colonial actors anymore. I know it’s for a skit but I also wonder if the person who wrote this was a Virginian lmao or some random person who heard that CW exists
