    The difference in flight "patterns" between an African Grey (approx. 450 grams) and a budgie (approx. 30 grams) is astonishing. My budgies are extraordinarily fast, and they can change direction on a dime. Currently I have a rescue budgie in my "bird foster home" who was found outside. My vet was due for the annual exams, so I threw in the rescue to be examined and given anti-parasite medication. I had not thought to do so, but when the vet opened this (very) young male's wings, the flight feathers had all been trimmed, but 2 had grown back on each side: nonetheless, this budgie flies like the wind! Incredible... The power of flight... I am surrounded by flighted birds, and I LOVE it. Observing them is awesome.

    @wingsNpaws My Parrot is an eclectus that was raised by its parent. I was able to tame her and made her learn a few tricks : make her touch my finger as a pointer, make her fly to me and and turn around, for instance. I suceed by watching a lot of videos, yours in particular. Thanks a lot for that !
    However my training with her only work when I show here I've got food. She dislike being pet, or anyting else that is not food. And I don't read any sign that she actually like being with me. As soon as she got her treat she goes away back to her cage. Do you have an advice as how to use Something else than food as a reward ? Is it posible she eventually "likes" me or being pet?

    I have a question! So I have a green cheek conure whose newly regaining her flight feathers. We’re making lots of progress, but sometimes she’s just not treat motivated/stubborn. I never throw her or anything like that, but I will turn to leave the room to encourage her to follow me. I keep close attention to her energy levels so I’m fairly certain she’s not tired- more of the treat just doesn’t interest her at that time. Is this mean? She’s growing in confidence and becoming a stronger flyer.

    I’m new to your channel and my African Grey will finally come home this month. I talked to you on IG about her, can you do a video on what to do for week one and week two with your bird. Thank you for all of your uploads I need every bit of it. It’s my first bird and I’m new to it all. I would never thought I would love birds the way that I do now. I always thought bird poop was nasty, but when I got my bird it was all love. I spend time with her Mon-Sun at the bird shop. Can you try to upload everyday, that’s if you can. Thanks in advance

    hi John, its me again with my 6 yeras old male grey Kuko... you would not believe it but my Kuko flew away last year in September I remember it too well as if it was only yestearday, things like this one one never forgets...he is fully flighted from birth by the way....and to cut long story short we did find him on the same day he escaped only a few hours later after nonstop searching for him....we were very very lucky because chances of catching a bird arealways very slim...anyways I would love to tell you more about it if you are interested, perhaps if you let me know your email address we can be more in touch or your skype contact? Also if you ever happen to visit South Wales in U.K. you are more than welcome to visit us and of course with your wife too, I will be honoured by your presence and gratefull if you can spare some advice and tips for my boy Kuko :-))))

    I got an African Grey aroumd 3 months ago, who was supposed to be 5 months old at that time so he must be 8 months now if hatching date was accurate.
    He seems to have bonded to me as he likes coming to me, sitting on my shoulder, my head, my arms and revently he has this habit of hanging upside down from my arms / sleeves / edges of my shirt 😆
    He flies towards me a lot, as well, even if I dont call him 😅 I have an office work, from 8am to 5pm, I leave home round 6:30 am then reaches home round 6:30, so like 12 hours outside home. I leave him inside his "crib" when I go out and soon as I reach home, I let him out and whenever I am home, he roams freely. I live in a very small room,12 sqm area excluding the bathroom so my baby is quite manageable inside. Like, I said he roams freely and he flies towards me without any cue and he flies away whenever he wants or if I put him down to perch. His flight feathers are full as his wings were never clipped. I do not plan nor have any inclination to clip his wings either 🤔 I think as long as he is inside my room, he will be ok. I dont have space also to keep him outside or get a huge aviary. So ny 12 sqm room is the only home for both of us.
    So I mentioed that he flies towards or away from me anytime he wants. My problem though is sometimes when I really want him to come to me, he ignores me. Like, when he perches on my TV (a wall mounted 65 inch) and it is high so I cannot reach him unless I used some stick or my slippers to get him to come down. That is how I get him to come down from the TV, I had to get my slippers and "force" him to perch on it and take him down or sometimes he flies away on his own. I feel frustrated sometimes when he ignores me when I ask him to get down from the TV.
    The solution I am thinking is to have a shelf fixed above the TV and fill it with boxes and books in such a way that he cannot perch anymore on top of it 😆 However, while it is not happening yet, I would really like your advice how to train him to come to me anytime I call him. Thanks.

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад

      Training an African Grey is no different than training a budgie, a cockatoo, or even a macaw. In fact, I train my dog the same way I train Smokey. I've also used the same strategies to train budgies and amazons in the past. So, what you see in my videos are completely transferrable to training budgies. I can't, however, just go and buy budgies to train them for a video; that would be unethical.

    How often do you feed Smokey sunflower seeds, I know they can be addictive to birds if you give them to much. I want to use them for training purposes but scared she only going to want the seeds instead of her other foods and treats that I bought her

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад

      I only use seeds as training treats. As long as you wean your bird onto pellets, fruits, and veggies, she will look forward to her training sessions because she knows that those are special times when she could get seeds.

    I needed to tell you thanks for the videos. The tragic thing is my dad owned a green check before, and the short story is he died my sister and brother didn't give him water while my dad and I was on a trip. It pulverized my heart, but now I am older and own my place now I've persuaded my wife into letting me get another bird. I was looking around and stumbled across your videos because I wanted an African gray, not the congo sized one the smaller gray. I couldn't care less if it talks I love the look of them. My question is would you recommend buying one from somewhere like pet land or adopting any bird I come across knowing that it's not quite what I want and knowing I only have room for one bird at this time. I do want to produce the bird with the best home I could regardless. Thanks for the input if you do get to this.

      It all comes down to your personal decision. I know some people are adamant on adoption, but that doesn't always work out. I think you should research on your own and make your own call on that one.

    And another question do you let your bird get out of his cage by himself and take him or put your hand in the cage and get him out

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад

      I always ask Smokey to hop on or step onto my hand. She does so willingly. Never force your bird to step up. Never use the "ladder" method. Never push your hand up against their chest to knock them off balance until they get on your hand. DO give your bird a reason to step up by using treats. DO give them head scratches when they do step up. DO make it a positive experience every time they step up. DO give them MANY MANY reasons to step up. I have a video that may help you with getting him out. Visit my channel to see more!

    Hi, I have a problem with my little Budgie. She’s a two year old female, and she is extremely territorial. Anywhere that she claims as hers, including my shoulder, I cannot take her away form without being bitten very hardly and multiple times. I'm not sure if he does or not, but I'm sure if he does, he has videos on it. Just check out his videos. If not though, birdtricks has a series called Morgan, where they record the whole process of teaching a client's bird (macaw) to free fly outdoors (they train birds for outdoor flight professionally) the series is really long and informative. Check out the videos here first though, I personally prefer the way wingsNpaws explains things and just his communication style, but if you're interested in free flight and there's nothing here, check out birdtricks and hunt down the Morgan series.

    • @phobia9358

      Laura Prokes thanks! I actually found wingsNpaws' video about free flight a week ago. He doesnt let her fly outside because she would be harder to find. Ill check out that channel!

    • @lauraprokes117
      @lauraprokes117 6 лет назад

      Pho Bia that makes sense, must be a scary thing letting a bird you love outdoors like that. My heart beats a little faster just imagining it with my bird. And so, so much training goes into it. Plus the smaller the bird, the riskier it is. They are usually quieter, and less easy to spot at a distance so harder to find if something goes wrong and they land away from you. Also more likely a predator will go for a small bird. I know birdtricks is very well educated on the patterns of avian predators in her area, and will fly in different areas in different seasons because of it. It took birdtricks four months to train Morgan and her owner, and it took her nine months for the bird and owner before that. It's a slow and difficult process, and birds and people each learn at different individual speeds. Good luck on your hunt for more info :) it's a really interesting topic.

      There are many aspects that go into keeping parrots to allow them to thrive in captivity. There is no way that I can make one single video to cover all those aspects. However, if you visit my channel, there are many videos that cover a lot of what goes into keeping African Grey parrots or any parrots in general. I think its important to realize that taking good care of an African Grey goes above just "loving them". To allow any animal to thrive in our care, it requires research and learning about their specific needs so that we can accommodate those needs in captivity.

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад

      If you have the space, I really REALLY recommend an outdoor aviary (try to get one with a safety door if she's flighted). If not, I don't think brand is as important as getting one that allows you to give her as much space as possible. Just keep in mind that for a GCC bar spacing should not be any more than 0.5 inch apart.

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад +2

      I fully support people who free flight their bird IF they do so responsibly and know what they're doing. Birds that are free flighted are trained specifically to fly outdoors through a process that helps them build up skills indoors first before going outside. There are also some birds that are better suited for free flying than others. Some birds should never be free flighted (only indoor flighted). I don't support people who take their untrained birds outside because they think the bird won't fly away and just want to show off. I support flighted birds and keeping birds flighted, even if it's just indoors. I respect people who have flighted birds but do not free fly them because they know their bird is not a good candidate for free flight. I also respect people who properly train their bird for free flight and do so knowing the risks and knowing what they're doing. I hope this answers your question!

    i want to take a bird like that to be my friend not my pet, but i’m asking myself. Your bird love you sooo much, i can see that, but you’re not feeling guilty ? Because those birds can be happier in Africa ? I love those birds, and i’m thinking “ ok, you love me, but is good because i have you in my house ?” “The birds are rapidly declining from the continent in what experts call the “African Silence,” and perhaps the most deafening silence comes from Ghana.” So, you know that, but it’s good to feel guilty because of that ?

      If you're in school most of the day, remember that parrots need at least 3 hours of social out-of-cage time. You can either play with it when you get home, or have your parents take it out to play if they're comfortable doing so. During the day, you'll simply want to leave your bird in its cage or aviary, with plenty of foraging and chewing toys to keep it entertained.

      In the wild, parrots are seldom ever alone. So, if someone in your family is home while you're away at school, its a good idea to ask that person to interact with your bird periodically throughout the day. In addition, provide your bird with LOTS of foraging and enrichment opportunities. I cover those in different videos on my channel.
