A nice nod to watch fans was a scene in X-Men Dark Phoenix. Professor X wears a Rolex Milgauss ref. 116400 when he has a meeting with Magneto. It's definitely a watch chosen by the character specifically due to its anti magnetic qualities.
The GMT bezel also is often used to keep track of “home time” when away from home. By removing the bezel, one can relate that to Colonel Kurtz abandoning any connection to home.
I recall reading or hearing somewhere recently, that the Patrick Bateman character in American Psycho wears a Seiko 5, in two tone, gold steel, with fluted bezel. It looks like a Rolex from a distance, but it is not. They HAD to switch to a Seiko from their plan to have him wear the Rolex, because Rolex would not let them use one of their watches in such a movie, and so they were forced to go with a watch which would look like a Date-Just from a distance... but I am pretty sure it is a Seiko 5.
It is a Seiko 5, for the exact reason you said. But also I think the Seiko fooling others into thinking it’s something it’s not kind of sums up Patrick Bateman
@@paco20927 Or, the opposite maybe? The ambiguity of the ending, is founded, and Bateman actually was just delusional, and actually isn't what he thinks he is, so it's actually hiding anything....which might be apt for Seiko too 😛
There are plenty of nice watches here but the watch with the most character here is the legendary Seiko SKX009. Not the best but the most charming dive watch in the world. A modern yet simplistic masterpiece.
Its so nice that you display the sources of images directly on screen, it really shows how respectful you are. With the added good content of the video, you have gained my respect as well Sir.
In the remake of Thomas Crown, Pierce Brosnan sports a JLC Reverso, which, like Bruce Wayne is a nice touch highlighting the duality of the character (and Crown's is the classic version, when flipped it hides the face)
I agree about Redford's character in All is Lost (which is a great film, by the way). The SKX is an "instrument" that fulfills a specific and vital function, similar to the instrument he takes on the raft with him as a means of navigation. And the watch is the one constant. He has to think creatively about the boat itself and all of the other things he either salvages or surrenders as the boat goes down. The watch is just about the only thing that's "easy to understand."
Fun fact, in american Psycho, Batamen actually uses a seiko 5 similar to a date just because rolex didnt want to be represent by a Psycho, and the film was low budget, they couldnt afford a Rolex
I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments but how can you forget Interstellar and the Hamilton watches? They played a HUGE roll and were practically personified in the movie.
You got me, I’m one of those guys that watches movies because of the wrist watches being worn lol. Always appreciate your videos, well done! Cheers idguy
6:41 Problably one of the biggest disinformations in horological history: Patrick Bateman (played by actor Cristian Bale) never wore a Rolex Datejust in the classic 2000 movie American Psycho, because Rolex didn’t want to be associated with an evil movie character. The watch in the movie is a discontinued 38mm two-tone stainless steel Seiko with a fluted bezel reference SNXJ90, featuring a white colored dial with day and date display feature, on a jubilee bracelet. Its resemblance to the Datejust is of course unquestionable, but still - it is a Seiko.
Bond wears his Rolex Submariner in Thunderball - about 92 minutes in, when he swims ashore and discovers Largo's crews' diving gear, we get a good long look at it, when he checks the time. The Breitling was just a geiger-counter to check the presence of nuclear weapons. Tom Cruise's Panerai PAM 63 GMT in Tropic Thunder is worth a mention - they are quite rare - unlike the ubiquitous Rolex (the watch for those who no little about watches).
Bruce Wayne (Val Kilmer) also wore a JLC reverso with video call function in 1995 Batman Forever... separately, I enjoyed seeing Panerai in the Transporter worn by Frank Martin (Jason Statham) and JLC reverso on Adrien Brody in the Pianist... Fun topic ID Guy!
What an amazing take on watches in film. I will add a Jaeger Lecoutlre gold memovox for Thomas crown at the Boston Haymarket, and an Omega Speedmaster moonwatch for the cult film Buckaroo Banzai.
It's a good thing you didn't mention the watch worn by Don Draper in a part of the series, as shown in the picture at the beginning of this video. It's a Rolex Explorer, but they did a poor job in selecting a reference 14270, which started in 1989, whereas he wears it in the early 60's and should have been a 6610 or a 1016.
Steve McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair also wears a gold JLC Memovox. You can briefly see it when he is out shopping at some fruit stalls in Boston with Faye Dunaway in the happy romance part of the movie.
Excellent video Mr. IDGuy! I think another interestint exercise would be to pair watches to characters without watches, or pairing new watches to previously establised pairings! - Han
Nice video... but I can't believe you left out one of the most prolific watch manufacturers to ever grace the screen... Hamilton. Whether the field watches of Pearl Harbor, the Ventura in Men in Black, the "Murph" of Interstellar or the Below Zero of the Martian, few companies have tied iconic watches to iconic characters like Hamilton.
Well Put together and educational video. I never knew that Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t wearing a Rolex in Wolf of Wall Street. Good eye and nice narrative on the characters in each film.
I served in the US Navy for 20 years in UDT. Since retirement, I own a dive school and worked on several films as a technical advisor. Granted, there are a lot of admirable reasons to the selection of the watches, however, in the end it is usually about product placement. Also, I don't wear Doxa watches because Matthew McConaughey wore one in the movie, Sahara. Makes no difference that the character in the novels, Dirk Pitt, preferred Doxa. I wear Doxa simply because it is a dive watch for divers and has proven itself throughout the years.
Two biggies that you missed. 1} Robert Redford’s Seiko SKX in All is Lost, and 2) Robin William’s Quartz Hamilton in Dead Poets Society. This auctioned for 32,500 at Sotheby’s..
Great vid! A really interesting subject even if the choice is too often down to sponsorship and product placement. Hamilton should get a mention (most numerous film appearances of any brand) as well as some of the Bond's Roger Moore era Seikos (eg the mighty Tuna!). Jaws is good for watches too. The Sub in Bond is interesting - I think we are living in an era where the Sub is common and seen as everyday. Where people wear them to the office and for their presenting job on TV. But this was a hugely glamorous watch back in the '60s - rakish luxury and style infused with daring-do and danger. Ideal for Bond.
The IDGuy Tribe is going to have to recommend a moniker change for you to the HHGuy - Horology Historian Guy! Your research skills are phenomenal! Is your Industrial Design morphing also? Please continue to educate us.
This is a very thoughtful characterization of the watches although I think you may have put more into it than the actors even. For instance DiCaprio has been on the Tag payroll for years (I first discovered on a large outdoor ad in Paris). 😂
Wonderful detail in the video. Wondering which was the watch in the pic of the video in the centre, an odd one with steel which looks like a semi-cover on the face of the watch?
American Psycho isn't a Rolex. It's a Seiko 5 SNXJ90. Rolex refused to be part of the movie. That's also why the lines were changed from the book "Don't Touch The Rolex", to the movie "Don't Touch The Watch". American Seiko
The point about Bruce Wayne wearing the JLC Reverso, and how "[...] how characters best represent themselves through their superheroes, not so much through their everyday selves." reminds me of what Quentin Tarantino said about the main difference between Superman and Batman. Tarantino said, "Bruce Wayne puts on a costume to become Batman, but when (Kal-El (Superman) wakes up every morning, he's already Superman. Each morning Superman puts on his Clark Kent costume to make himself appear normal. Clark Kent is Superman's criticism of how he sees human men.
I think the sub in the hunter goes well with the character; I base my current look on him, Green bomber , Levi’s , trainers ; but A Seiko vintage 150m Lol
In the films James Bond has not only worn Rolex and Omega, he has also worn Tag Heuer, Breitling, Seiko, and Hamilton Pulsar. Product placement, or is 007 a collector?
In my eyes, Heat is a movie that plays that role of connecting watches to characters to a level pf perfection. In the movie, the two rivalry characters played by Al Pacino and De Niro wear contrasting watches. Al, who is an LAPD Detective, wears a Bvlgari Diagono, a very unaffordable watch for a detective’s salary. The watch not only serves as an extension to his character that appreciates luxury and sophistication, but also indicates that it was probably a gift from a woman giving off a slight hint about his previous relationships. On the flip-side, De Niro rocks a Timex Stealth showing he’s a guy who is more towards tech and functionality.
Given how much of a pain it is for continuity and the reflection from the lighting (especially for Rolex without any AR coating) when filming a watch dial on, it's a wonder any get shown in films at all - you've got to assume it is deliberate when it is obvious and not part of the plot, as Apollo 13 is for the Speedmaster.
Another interesting video. Love your varied content. I thought you might have mentioned a counterpoint or two as well. Leonardo DiCaprio in the Great Gatsby, is wearing a watch that is clearly too large for its era. The film is set in 1922,. He is wearing a JLC Reverso style watch that would not be introduced til 1931.
I would like to add Ed Harris' Seiko, similar with the ones Martin Sheen was wearing. That was in the movie "The Abyss", i was surprised that they didn't showcase the Submariner since it was a James Cameron movie. BTW Nice Vid.
The photograph used for The Wolf Of Wallstreet watch was a Heuer 1000, not a TAG Heuer 1000. Just watched it again and at 5:55 it's a Heuer and at 6:26 it's a TAG Heuer, no idea what one De Caprio wore in the film.
Benedict Cumberbatch wears a very nice JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual in the Marvel movie Dr Strange (it also plays a part in the movie) , also get a very quick glimpse of his watch winder drawer in the movie and it's full of amazing pieces :)
The film, Jaws launched the summer blockbuster. You missed one of the most iconic product placements when it comes to watches. Richard Dreyfus wore the Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic. I wonder what the shark thought? 😉
Hey ID guy, awesome video as usual. Maybe add John Wick wearing Carl F Bucherer Manero? Also he wears it military style, in the inside of the wrist. It's an elegant watch that matches his suits and overall style, especially compared to James bond wearing a seamaster or sub with a suit
How about the Hamilton Ventura on Men in Black. Such a good watch casting as the movies are somewhat a parody of 1950s scifi movies and the watch was an iconic late 1950s watch.
