- The iconic character returns with Crank director Brian Taylor at the helm and original comic creator Mike Mignola collaborating closely. Set in the 1950s, The Crooked Man follows Hellboy and Bobbie Jo, a rookie agent from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD).
While transporting a mischievous magical spider that derails their mission, they find themselves stranded in rural Appalachia. Instead of finding a charming little town with a diner and a post office, they stumble upon a cursed region dripping with witchcraft, devilry, and enough demonic baggage to fill an entire season of Supernatural.

Honestly, I'd fuck with a Hellboy TV series in the vein of early Supernatural. Nice hourish long monster of the week horror episodes where the BPRD shows up and fixes the situation while also scaring the fuck out of whoever they saved.
Why can’t executives actually listen to what fans and the general public want? 😂
That sounds so amazing. The BPRD and hellboy could travel all over the world like when they traveled to mystical Japan to deal with two storm demon brothers in sword of storms. Something like that could be a special two or three part episode.
They should have done this from the start, in my opinion.
We have enough generic fantasy hero movies.
What Hellboy has over the rest is his connection and nuanced relationship to the occult making him the perfect character for horror and mystery stories with a little action mixed in.
Ron Perlman did such an amzing job at Hellboy, his shoes are nigh unfillable.

Honestly I think the timing was pretty good for releasing a movie like this, a lot of comic book fans have been getting frustrated at how many stories in the movies seem to revolve around similar threats (oh no, a big sky beam is threatening the world... again.) or similar levels of stakes, I found it really refreshing to see a story that focuses on a small scale problem and reinforces the stakes by having us learn about the characters so we can empathise with them and their situation.
You could argue that following a beloved comic so closely is basically cheating, but looking at other comic book adaptations over the years it becomes pretty clear that NOT screwing up a beloved story is apparently harder than it would seem.
I'm not a huge fan or know the lore of hellboy, but my perception of hellboy is he should be more like a detective in noir esque movie, like more of thriller and mystery instead of del Toro action centered one. where each time he have to handle any demonic or mystical cases, he had to went through actual investigation to find every nook and crany to determine which demon causing it and then there's a brief action in the final act. like in the x-files.
He is basically an noir occult detective who is a demon spawn but del toro movie is still fits hellboy because some the comics are just like the movies some more horror mystery like the crooked man story and some other ones but that’s why hellboy is so great because you do both action or horror and mystery stories

For all you can say about Del Toro's take, I would argue they do fit the mood and artery of the comics at least, compared to the 2019 one which felt like an oddball splatter comedy and was well removed from the ideas of the comics. I even give this new film a little more credit in learning from that mess and going back to a more subdued mood.

I enjoyed this film, i enjoy the other HB films, I ain't looking for perfection, i'm looking for enjoyment
and thats why everyone movie last few years have gone down here. everyone wants all movies to only seem fun. don't get me wrong there's lots of good movies that do that. its just sad seeing almost every movie only focus on that one goal and gets instantly praised as perfect cuz of it

I noticed his stone hand rarely moved. I guess the budget explains why it looked so stiff and lifeless this time around. Still a better adaptation than the last one. Far from what the original 2 managed to achieve though
Yeah his tail barely moved at all as well. I can forgive it being a small budget film and all though. I agree it’s still better than the 2019 reboot though
I may be in the minority but as a horror fan who doesn't like the generic polished look certain movies have since the 2000s this is the first Hellboy film that really caught my attention. I hope the director and Mignola chose the look because the story will be gritty and not fantasylike. On the other side the movie probably won't attract neither the traditional Hellboy fans nor horror fans. But I will test this out.
It's a little jarring that this Hellboy doesn't have the bright yellow eyes that he's usually known for.
Jack was supposed to have his yellow eyes added in post for Hellboy the Crooked Man, but for some reason the studio chose to leave his natural eye color.

I watched the movie and to be honest i like it, also the budget is way less than the $20m people are speculating.
If I didn't know any better I'd say you prefer this movie to the Del Toro masterpieces.

Niyat is dead-on in his assessment that fans of Mignola (and collaborators) are righteously excited for this adaptation of a popular comic series. I also think this film will be a better introduction for those who've never walked into comic books store than the earlier films... and hope it will increase demand and valuation of my stock of these comics! 🤑

You know I was introduced to hell boy with the first movie. Was hoping the 2019 one was gonna be a horror superhero movie. So I’m excited to see this one. I mean demons and horror are like. peanut butter and jelly.

This felt very much like Abe Lincoln vampire hunter. In sense of at its best very fun at its worst very B movie. If you have reviewed that would be a good one ☝🏻

This has a way smaller budget but is way better than the hellboy reboot and most slop movies that are made nowadays

I miss Ron Perlman’s face. No one seems to truly pull off the look. This Hellboy looks so plain even compared to the previous movie. I like this direction with leaning away from the superhero flashiness to the creepy monsters and witches. That seems like a good idea for a Hellboy series/ movie. It does look very low budget in many angles though.

Honestly, i liked the reboots. I absolutely love the originals, but i also thought the new direction the reboots were a fun, darker direction instead of just the more whimsical cases Hell-Boy usually takes on
Ikr Harbour did a fantastic and hilarious job of his own version, I can't wait to watch this one

I don’t think David Harbour’s Hellboy was bad at all, it’s just obvious the movie had a troubled development. Plus the CG was super good imo.
I love your work, FCE, and hope with all my heart you don't roll your eyes and label me as a "that guy", but it's App-uh-latch-in, not app-uh-lay-chin. I live in the heart of Appalachians in North Carolina, and it just kills a little piece of our souls to hear it the other way. I'm still throwing a like though.

As much as I and others want Hellboy 3, isn't gonna happen, GDT no longer seems to have interest in making it and Ron Perlman is way too old now, and Selma Blair retired due to MS and other medical issues.

I thought the 2019 film was decent, with an oppressive and dark setting. The climatic chaos was violent and unsettling.

Can you do a recap for The Platform 2 that just dropped on Netflix? The movie was good but the ending was confusing.
Personally, for horror movies, I'd much prefer rougher camerawork than smoother because it enhances the creepiness of the content. It's why I'm not a fan of The Conjuring much, because it feels too perfect for the inspiration its trying to replicate. But this film? The rough camera works kinds makes the bad CGI work for me

As a long time fan of the comics, I never liked the movies. The movies were all such a huge departure from the comics that they always left a sour taste in my mouth. The comics were always about the supernatural, while the movies always turned into action spectacles that just didn't match. While I'm glad that they are finally going back to the roots (should have done it from the beginning), I'm still not a fan of the actor in a rubber suit approach to the character. If they can do cgi with the villains, then they can do it with the lead hero. Hellboy in the comics is 7 ft tall, slim, square jaw & serious. These movies always portray him as barely 6 ft tall, buff like a bodybuilder, & comical. Sighs. But I will still give it a chance.

1and2 hellboy was ok not fateful still ok while the rebooted was fun but a mess this 4th hellboy feels like one of those 80s or 90s low budget movies that never got the big budget films it got a cult following like friday the 13th and holloween.
While I really like the direction and tone I absolutely hate how Hellboy looks, it's off putting as hell. It looks like the Temu version of Hellboy and I can't stand it. 🤷
