Eh, I prefer Interfaith Skirmish, that one had many different factions that were well fleshed out and super unique.
Personally, I liked the unlockable Deist faction, where we go on our own crusade to help atheists and progressive theists create a secular state where all can live in peace. The final boss being whoever is left alive by the end was a nice touch.
I'm mildly suprised that the female campaign didnt have a map either, I half expected there to no map for the men because of the never asking for directions stereotype, though i suppose that would have been a bit too clever for the developer lol.

I think we found a new champion for the "how long until the game breaks a rule of the Geneva Convention" speedrun.
Funnily enough, great many games reward you for killing civilians and innocent people. Red Alert, for instance, where they even drop you money crates. In Quake 2, killing your captive mates give you military supplies, and in one instance, a keycard too.

The first one is 'bout a theoretical scenario where the Nazi Germany never existed, so the Allies and the Soviets fight each other. Quake 2 is a first-person shooter set in the far future where humankind battles the flesh-and-machine alien race named Strogg, who kidnap humans and turn them into one of them. Quake 4 is a direct sequel to Quake 2, wit' an even moar expanded storyline.

@@marceloaranibar8802 Nah in Britain that would be considered utterly unfunny and offensive. We purged all that by the 2010s when the lad culture died out and Youth Crime/violence was rising. We mostly follow the new modern definitions.
Also this kind of stuff was already on the way out by 1996 anyway. Because we knew it was utterly silly by then and was no longer taken seriously. And you can't satirise something that is already ridiculous.
I have a theory that the developers hated this game as much as everyone who played it in this video. That “Buy a PlayStation” cheat they fitted into the game was their equivalent of flipping the bird to the publisher who made them make a game like this.
Yeah . The concept was already barebones and while aspects of the execution was good , it was more a techdemo to flex their programming skills instead making a good game.
it was fun back in the day to play for a while. like a more action oriented syndicate. just open a mission and go hose stuff down.
this game actually looks like it was well-built both technically and visually. theres potential here. it would probably benefit greatly from mods- tweaking the difficulty and making it more digestible/playable with perhaps a minimap etc.

I suspect the idea was to tell anybody that needed an invincibility cheat that they should buy a playstation. Kind of an insult that they couldn't handle pc games I suppose
I honestly thought that it was going to be revealed that the female side was the “easy mode” and it it would’ve had a map, and all the other things needed to make the game fun.
It would’ve been stupid, but it would’ve worked with the “ humor,” of the game.

It was the 90’s! That was humor back then and still is. These days its seen as cringy and sexist. But for 80s kids like me i can laugh about it. Hell i grew up on “married with children” wich still has amazing humor, unless you a snowflake and cant handle words ^^.

Which... now that I think about it, would be a great premisse for a game like this! Your character is sent to spy on the opposite camp, get caught, pretends to be docile for a while only to espouse the oppositions views! That would spice things up...

It's like the creators of this game watched a lot of Married With Children, specifically the parts where there's an all men's club called 'No Ma'am' and thought 'Hey what if we made a game out of this?"
Or like "what if Al and Marcy were leaders of respective warring factions?"
To be honest, the premise seems based off the feminist calls for mass murder that were extremely prominent in the 80s.
The big difference is that show was actually funny and entertaining. Also, spoofing those stereotypes hadn't been done to death at that point.

I'm pretty sure that Playstation cheat was meant to be a joke reference to the fact that this game was supposed to get a PS1 port. Of course considering all of the game's problems, and the devs eventual bankruptcy, you can see why that never happened.

Actually it's more resembling of Crusadeer: No Remorse. But it does have X-com vibes. Except X-com was actually pretty good.

But unless you traveled all over the country, you only had one regions version. Most foods are made incredibly differently, depending on where in the US you are.
The best way this sort of satire could of worked is they should focused on satirising how this Gender Wars concept came about. Think about it. Have the main villains be the governments of the world who are indoctrinating men and women to fight each other for their amusement under the guise of National Service but have both sides coming to the realisation of what's really going on, have them unite against the enemy and take them down.
And end with a ridiculous Utopian Society where men and women are now modern people who get along.
It's never a good sign when I can come up with a more deeper satire than these writers.

1. Make fun of a subject you know very little about.
2. Being malicious instead of providing actual wit.
3. Not having anything to say about the subject you are mocking.

I vaguely remember a news article in Electronic Gaming Monthly back in the day. Talking about this game and how It was supposed to be a much grander thing. But the company just worked with what they had. Already made commissions they were already circling the drain during development.
The only way this game could possibly be redeemed is if the creator of Marmaduke came out of nowhere and implied that he had repressed violent tendencies.
I wouldn't mind at all, if this game would actually be GOOD. Like uh, imagine Red Alert, but instead of allies and Soviets, it's Men vs. Women. Now _THAT_ would I play all-day-long, because Red Alert was actually DAMN good.

@@heardofrvb There was a season 1 episode of Rick & Morty that basically did the "genders at odds with each other complete with unfunny stereotypes" plot with a subplot involving Morty raising his half-alien son that wanted to destroy everything. The creator of Marmaduke, Brad Anderson, showed up out of nowhere and suggested channeling that energy into creative endeavors. "You didn't think I made Marmaduke with the intention of being _funny,_ did you?"

I remember seeing ads for this game in magazines back in the 90s, but I never any more than that. Glad I never wasted any money on it.
They clearly saw Crusader: No Remorse, and thought "We can do that better!" And by better, they meant bigger. Bigger maps, more characters to control, more destruction, more stupid humor. But they had no clue what made Crusader good in the first place, so none of it worked. At least the in-game graphics still look nice, I guess.
Yes, this is a _blatant_ Crusadeer: No Remorse ripoff. You know, if they'd try to copy Red Alert for instance, it would have been MUCH better.
Tell them the full story. Tell them how the ads' tagline was "How many women have you SHOT UP today?"

Am I a bad person for thinking that, in theory, that idea could have been fun?
If they had fixed the gameplay and cranked the ridiculousness of the concept up to 11, it could have worked. But by trying to frame this as sci-fi that kind of made sense, they missed the opportunity to go full dumb comedy. Kind of like a Naked gun movie, but about a war between boys and girls. On paper, I think that "full comedy take" might have worked... at least back then.
Because today, if you released a game with that title alone, you would cause the biggest moral outrage on the internet ever. XD
Not a all, i think it would just be a fun goofy game poking fun at both men and women like how southpark might do. I cant say for certain how somthing like this might turn out today. But there’s nothing wrong at abit harmless fun imo. Good to joke and laugh at each other now and then.
Yeah, make the men big dumb action movie stereotypes and jocks, make the women over the top bimbos and just lean into every stereotype imaginable and it could have at least been mildly amusing. As is it really didn't go far enough to be even chuckleworthy.
@@doctabaldheadI loved Constructor and Theme Hospital got their humor and stereotypes. Like your tenants in former as cliches like greasers, slobs, yuppies etc. and you can hire a hippie to harass competition. Latter is more about being wacky with diagnoses and dark humor but it worked well.
I agree, but it's just as hard to pull that off nicely as it is a semi-serious game like this tried to be. Maybe harder because of juggling the joke delivery and the jokes themselves, precisely how far to push the envelope.
They may have even gone for what you're saying and were just *that bad* at executing it.

It might make some logical sense for there to be an instant game over if all of your leaders were offed, but... why did they make it an option to put them on the same squad? Devs couldn't have inserted a warning that it'd be a bad idea?
In X-com, it was done much better. If you lose your hi-rank officers, your troops' morale drop badly but once the mission is over, they just elect a new leader.
A lot of games in the 90s it was play and learn to play....no hand holding...seems to be the case here too. Although they also often SOLD guides for games so there is that.
This is rough 90s indie game design. You'd be lucky to find the answers in the manual, let alone anywhere inside the game.

@@the_last_ballad It's not just the stereotypes and sht: it's mainly the gameplay and when the game starts cheating (like, the unlimited enemies). Gameplay-wise, Dune 2 was FAR superior than this isometric hell.
It's like the devs looked into the future for inspiration, saw Twitter, and went with that without knowing any better.

The good thing about this game is its attention to details. I can't recall how many time I've watched some TV show or game show the inside of a woman's house and stupidly not include the half dozen or so giant neon female gender symbols we keep on the walls. 🙄 Finally something gets it right.
If the game is set in a dystopian future with totalitarianism on both sides, it's kinda acceptable. I mean, in Wolfenstein 3D, there were swastikas around every corner. Oh and Hitler-heads and paintings too. So the developers actually did this right.

A LOT of old games have great attention to detail that modern games do not. Heck medal of honor allied assault did things that modern games Don't do well. Grenades and acoustics.

Guys, please continue doing those videos you used to do about the good games and what they did right, not just because I liked those too, but I genuinely worry about your sanity. Seriously. Video games from all eras is a passion we have because of the artistry behind the pioneers and gems on the market, and I cannot possibly imagine that wading through the dregs of video game history strengthens that passion at all.
You know, every time you cover a game that precedes the shutting down of its company, you should add it to that graveyard. Make that a running thing, it was actually pretty cool.
I like the weirdly animated Churchill AVRE for the intro!...also my grandma use to work at a Kmart in the early 2000s, I got lots of weird videogames and nerf guns for massive discounts because of it.

I think a fundamental issue with this game's concept is just that it has all the material and comedic potential of a single episode of south park crammed into a 10+ hour strategy game with multiple campaigns. Even if its sense of humor wasn't so on-the-nose and unprofessional in how it used satire, it would take some very complex and constant storytelling to avoid feeling stale and actually do something with its premise. In its final state of just being a series of objectives without much narrative beyond that, it's just a single dry, not that funny joke told over and over again.
That feels like it would have been obvious the morning after your drunk and high brainstorming when you read over the plot and were like "wow this is dumb."
Or, they could have make it a pr0n game instead.
Only reason why I know this game exists is because Bloober Team apparently pitched a seemingly unrelated game with a similar premise as well as the same name a while back only to get turned down by every publisher they contacted.
Oof. Something that awful sounds like something Bloober Team would do.
Red Dwarf is possibly the finest comedy ever. It's tied with the second season of Blackadder.

I played a similar game to this, called Dominus. It was more of a Dungeon Keeper clone, but it expected your to create spells make traps, hire and upgrade creatures, and capture and interrogate enemies while defending your tower from multiple fronts. And all that in bloody REAL TIME! Yes enemy armies keep advancing even while you research or torture a prisoner. Needless to say, as much as I liked the idea and the graphics I could never ever finish or win it.

That interview between the sexes around the 3 minute mark was not out of place in the radio talks show from mid 00's GTA game. Kinda want to listen to it more and hopefully I can find it here.

GTA would have done it better. It's never been subtle admittedly but they always highlight how their real target is how the media presents debates like that, rather than whatever point the debaters are making (and they're sure to trash the loudest voices on both sides). This game couldn't even get that much right. They were too busy making their edgy point.

@@jadedheartsz there's a lot of anti Thatcher stuff in GTA London that I suspect Americans missed (or likely just didnt play 1,2 and London) as its not obvious. But they've always had their own views and they've always clearly had more contempt for the right.
But I'd argue the fact they actually have a point of view makes their satire stronger than what gender wars was trying. Their clear point of view allows them to satirise both sides of the culture war whilst almost making it clear to men's rights activists "we're definitely not on your side". Gender wars was trying to have it's cake and eat it by having no opinion snd still send up both sides. Which isn't as strong because you have nothing to say apart from the edgiest nonsense you can find from both perspectives. Which ultimately isn't particularly interesting.
@@medes5597 never played any of the GTA games before part 3 so I never noticed that. Only one side of the culture war is truly toxic and it's the one that literally tried to overthrow democracy itself and is promoting eradicating trans people(not exaggeration)and promoting hateful nonsense about minorities and trying to punish women.
OMG Crusader: No Remorse and No Regret. What a random memory you managed to drag up for me. They were great for the time I thought. Some enemies gave me Robocop vibes, which was one of my favorite movies, and being a Star Wars fan I had fun pretending I was playing the only Stormtrooper that had decent aim. XD It even had little easter eggs like Music changes and Visual changes based on the date (Typical holidays) and funny cheat codes. I had many fun hours playing those 2.... wonder if I got the disks lay around in their box still.....
Honestly still one of my favourite games, even if it is just the damn _vibes_ that game had. Incredible music, addictive gameplay, great violence, it was awesome

My favorite part of this series is that when they say "It's just BAD" at the end of the episode it always feels really satisfying.
Red dwarf is brilliant and funnily enough they did do a fender bender episode that was actually really good and did a really awesome way of showing how men would have been treated and it was brilliant seeing how they felt uncomfortable and disgusted and lister pointed out how the way Rimmer felt towards his female counterpart is exactly how he treated women in their universe. I highly recommend to see the episode it’s eye opening

@@Jakepearl13 Postal is great, first one is just guy going psycho and a good arcade twin-stick shooter with unusual for the era level editor... Second is satire, and to this day one of the best sandbox games ever made. It's from the era of experimental unusual first person shooters that still tried something new before everyone copied Call of Duty modern warfare. The era between Red Faction, Soldier of Fortune and up to Stalker was nice. Then it all turned multiplayer.
For Carmageddob: More like this mess of a game came so cars could leave red streaks. Mutually targeted streaks.
I've been so hungry for a new Just Bad episode I've been rewatching all of your previous ones in order (twice) so I am PUMPED for this one seeing as it's over 30 minutes!
Also, really, reaaaaaally hoping you guys do one on Sonic 06 at some point in the future. I know (and like) that you typically do lesser known games, and the game's pretty well known as one of the worst Sonic games, but it's got soooo much to pull from I think a video from you guys would destroy me.
I'd much rather they do the lesser known Metal Slug 2006 as not many people know about it, it's Metal Slugs attempt to go 3-D with cheesy voice-acting and a totally insane story. It bombed so badly it never got released outside of Japan(though one was clearly planned as the menus and voice-acting are all in English).
I'd be curious to see their take on Star Fox Adventures. It's not _bad_ but it's very unfinished.

I'm kind of genuinely surprised that this game didn't just exclude a map from the male path because of "hehe men don't use maps or ask for directions"... Feels like that's about the level of humor they went with

Sadly Gender Wars's satire was a prime example of just how exhausted Satire was in the 1990s in the UK. "Playground sniping" Devoid of depth and wit. And is about as subtle as being whacked with a mallet. Also Spitting Image was finally killed off in 1996 due to declining ratings and script quality.
Considering Shane actually bought this game, I was totally expecting The Ghost to show up..

the 90s PC gaming market was pretty much the wild west, anything went on there as it received a lot less attention from the moral guardians compared to the console market since it was assumed most PC gamers were adults.
People were built different back then. Also the Internet wasn't as ubiquitous as it is, so if a Karen saw this game there wasn't a Twitter she could run to and cancel everyone involved
