Wow, a full-blown tutorial for FFVI Old Ver on the first day of 2025! What's happening? Big thanks to OtenP for the video. If I were to share my thoughts on this version of the game, it's the GBA version that doesn't pretend to be the SNES version in terms of function or appearance. It's the same game, but if you approach it with the mindset of the SNES version, you're already setting yourself up for disappointment. Also, let's show some kindness to the modders who poured their love into this version of the game. It takes a certain level of bravery (pun intended) to contribute to this game. I can guarantee that each of these modders has faced their fair share of irrational reactions from middle-aged men who gatekeep what FFVI games should be. On a lighter note, I hope you all enjoy the unique and distinct visual experience that FFVI Old Ver offers through modding. Happy New Year! 😃

Freshman college Fall semester 1994. I had let an ear infection go way too long and finally went to the doctor the day before Thanksgiving. He sent me home with antibiotics and painkillers. I spent the rest of that day and every day until Monday (I was excused from Thanksgiving dinner even though family was in town) doped out of my mind while playing my brand-new copy of FFVI. That was the only time in my life my mother didn't complain that I was playing video games too much, lol.
We never got the PSP version of FF6 we deserved. I prefer the PSP versions of FF1, 2 and 4 over the pixel remaster. Thanks for showing me how to make the best version of FF6 cause I hate the pixel remaster sprites.
That is pretty awesome to see our own mods showcased in such a nice video!! :) I would personally NOT recommend running atma from within the FF6 folder... its best to run from the desktop or documents or anywhere else OUTSIDE of the game folder... (it should also never be "installed" in the game folder because of how the backup system works, so leaving it to its default program files location is a good idea) The presets in Atma do not "download" anything, they just start you up with some stuff pre-selected that will be downloaded during the installation... I personally recommend starting with Remastered preset, then change whatever as you go through the 7 pages. I also greatly preffer the remastered soundtrack selection to any other available (but that comes down to personal taste and preferences) -- ALSO, if you skip every mods from atma, you are missing out on the absolutely AMAZING opera scene with vocals... just that one ALONE is absolutely fantastic and my favorite part of the whole game with that mod from the Remastered Preset! :) Also, even if you install Atma using the Remastered preset on everything and the override things later on with Brave Steel or any other mods, its still a good idea to have the remastered preset because not everything like sprites that are included in remastered are in bravesteel... for example some NPCs or side characters which the remastered preset improves might be missing from other mods. I'm not sure why you recommend not using the Drop Shadow or Narshe Intro, since those do not affect the exe files like the defilter or opera fix do... The Defilter/Opera fix also works and fixes the ff6 exe using the same tech as the ips patcher from Faospark... so using the ones in the Atma can save you some time later on... Still, overall a great starting point and really cool video! grats for making it!

Thank you for all of this. I was able to get everything working, having started with nothing but your advice about searching for a certain site on google. Whole bunch of the mods installed and working, took about an hour for everything. Good advice regarding organizing all the files and mods on the desktop too. Unrelated question -- the Phantom Forest music that starts at 19 minutes - what version of the game is that from and/or is there a youtube vid for it like you provided for the other music used?

Honestly I have the pixel remaster for this game officially, my preferred way to play FFVI is with the Super Nintendo Original with the Ted woolsey uncensored patch, I am willing to check out this version with mods.

Just got 2 questions if you have an answer by chance, I haven't found a good way to use mods on my steam deck for ff6, would this guide work with that? Secondly, know any good mods to skip gameplay or at least skip random encounters and max level the characters?
@@user-dingydee im not familiar with steam deck at all to be honest. So I couldn’t really tell ya. For the other question, I don’t know of any type of mods like that, I recently just got into modding this game as well. I would really suggest joining the moogles and mods discord. Most of the ff6 modders are on there and they could help way more than I can. Sorry I couldn’t help
I would recommend modding the snes version, there are loads of amazing mods and there's a modding community specifically for the snes version, just look up ff6hacking. I also have a steam deck and I just downloaded retroarch and emudock and can load up my ff6 modded games without issue. My recommendations are Brave New World, FF6 T-Edition (make sure you get the english patch), Return of the Dark Sorceror, and FF6 Divergent Paths, but there are loads of cool mods out there and it is easily patchable for the snes version (and ff6hacking has many tutorials if you want to do it yourself or need to learn how to patch a mod to a rom). I used to be an active sprite artist on there.
Anyone know where to buy the FFVI Old Version on Steam for a reasonable price? I can only find the Pixel Remaster and I’d really like to try out the Brave Exivus style graphics.

About how to pronoun "Narshe"...i put it in Google Translate and used the pronounce button and it says "Nar-shay" and not "Narsh". I always just say "Narsh" and assume the E is silent. Really they should take that E out and leave it Narsh.
Fun fact: this is was the first iteration of the game that gave Voice to the opera scene via mods :) male and female singers backed by a full blown orchestra accompaniment. the full score of pixel remaster was also ported here as mentioned in the video but there are other 2 music packages : a world reborn and nostalgia of which i will full dare to say modders can give square a run for the money
I Really strongly prefer the music pack in the Remastered version over the PR one.... Atma comes with 2 options when it comes to the Opera with full voice opera... The AWR and NOS have an older version which sounds similar to the PR one with a much higher pitched Celes, THEN Remaster and SKLC have a new Opera with much better orchestral music and "in my opinion" better singer voices as well.

Well first off, throw this old junky peice of garbage right back in the trash where Square-Enix tossed it and where it belongs and just go mod the Pixel Remaster version which is by far the superior version when bolstered with mods. First important step before paying attention to any of this.

I used to ignore them, but these days, I've decided to take a gloves-off approach. The game and the modders deserve the acknowledgement, respect and space in FFVI gaming history .

It doesn't work, it did work in 2022 but now I move over all those files of the OBB folder and still have the vanilla sprites when starting the game.

Nah man, might be the way you installed it. Most likely you left reshade on which should be turned off

PR has much better music and best of all the Opera scene is actually a full blown opera.

If the Pixel Remaster included Gilgamesh, Leviathan, Kaiser Dragon and Omega Weapon, i would consider it the superior version, but it doesn't.
