    CRAFTSMAN V20 - Craftsman hand tools have been a part of our lives for 30 years and served us well. Our fondest memories of the tools were back when they were made in the USA and we started to shy away from the brand as it moved the production overseas. Now that the company has been acquired and realigned, we started to look at the hand tools and have been very impressed. We have never looked at the power tools but now seems like a good time to take a look at them since they are priced right.
    We currently have one Craftsman 4.0 Ah battery along with the V20 angle Grinder and V20 impact wrench. We are going to focus on the angle grinder because we have had some small fabricating projects that have allowed us to use it. The Craftsman V20 Angle Grinder is a straight forward tool without a lot of frills, but it gets the job done. Power is good along with runtime from what we would consider a small battery for today's technology. All the expected items are here such as a three-position auxiliary handle, a spindle lock, tool-free guard adjustment, and a single speed trigger. One item we have not seen on many other grinders is a lock off button that would keep the tool in a non-usable state. Normally we see a trigger safety or a lock on button.
    Quick Look Features
    4-1/2-in grinder with 9,000 no-Load RPM's
    Cast metal gear housing
    Tool-free guard
    Spindle lock
    3-Position Aux handle
    Includes: (1) CMCG400 small angle grinder, (1) grinding guard, (1) grinding wheel, (1) spanner wrench
    Price Vs Quality
    The cost of this bare tool is awesome! The price of the batteries is currently fairly high in comparison to others on the market. But we feel that sales and dropping prices will allow for people to invest in this brand at a very reasonable cost. For DIY or small construction trades, these tools seem very good and are made well with a good company that is backing them. The tool grade plastic used on the tools has held up well along with the rubber overmold. Ergonomically they are all balanced and sound. So far, all the Craftsman tools are brushed, but over time we bet that there will be an expansion as this brand continues to grow.
    We are excited about these affordable tools and what the future holds. You do not need the most expensive tool in the store to build something awesome. These new Craftsman tools will get the job done and allow for more money to go to other toys and projects.

    Swore off Craftsman electric tools over 30 years ago, after buying belt sander on sale for $ 35-40 and bought the warranty . I used it a couple times and the blower went out, on it. I took it over to send it in under the warranty and they said it would be $50 some dollars shipping to send it back in shipping cost. I said, I bought it and the warranty for a little less than that.
    I talked to the manager and then wrote to company, to know avail . Next time I was in the store I cut up my Craftsmen credit card and told them to send that to the company. I bought a pair of internal snap ring pliers and took it apart found a striped nylon gear and ordered another one for $ .50 cents .
    I have noticed even a lot of the hand tools are not near the quality as they use to be, in my opinion.

      We have hand tools from 30 years ago, some from 5 to7 and some from now. IMHO, SB&D is going to bring up the quality of the hand tools because they will be the same as the Dewalt line... Just my opinion. I never bought craftsman power tools and this is my first experience with them.

    Good review.... is it better then Ryobi? None of the cordless tools will be for us pros,but is it better then the Ryobi line will be the question....as for hand tools, like you ,I grew up with Made in the USA Craftsman hand tools..when they (SBD) bring back made in the USA Craftsman hand tools not Taiwan or China made ,the sales will skyrocket..there are dozens of other companies selling Non Americana made hand tools.....I try to only buy American made or German made tools..

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  5 лет назад +4

      Is it better than Ryobi. Great question. Power wise, yes. The batteries are limited to 4.0 Ah right now and Ryobi has much larger packs out now. The comparable Ryobi is $44 bucks and only has 6,500 No Load RPMs. That is slow. But Ryobi offers a Brushless model for $109. That is only ten dollars away from a Milwaukee M18.... So Ryobi has more options right now, but to compare the $44 Ryobi to the Craftsman, the Craftsman wins hands down. Craftsman cannot compete with the number of tools Ryobi has out right now, but the high-end Ryobi tools are priced too close to the upper scale brands.

      @@WorkshopAddict i have this PC angle grinder and the 18V brushed Ryobi and totally agree, however the way to buy Ryobi cordless tools is to wait for a kit sale. I got a Ryobi saber saw, skilsaw, sawzall, impact driver and drill/driver in a kit with two batteries, a charger and a carry bag for $229. All of the tools are brushless, and the sawzall, saber saw and skilsaw are their current top-of-the-line models with the drill and impact driver being one step below the top-of-the-line. No one else even comes close to offering a better value. Add to that the fact that the Craftsman batteries are way, way over priced and the choice becomes clear.

  • @Pro1er

    The Porter Cable and Black + Decker batteries (and probably the Craftsman), are somewhat compatible. I am using the PC battery from my angle grinder on my B+D tools and charge the battery with a B+D charger. All that needs to be done is to remove some plastic, you can search RUclips for instructions. PC battery to B+D tool is extremely easy, the reverse involves a bit of body surgery.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  5 лет назад

      From what I have read, the new craftsman has the opposite positive and negative terminals so surgery is not an option. Sad.

    Definitely interesting, but I'm not on Craftsman's battery platform so I'd probably just end up going with something corded, if I ever end up needing to replace my $10 Harbor Freight grinder (I rarely use it). I also noticed that this craftsman model you can put the handle on top and both sides. Milwaukee M18 and DeWalt 20v & Flexvolt don't have this on their grinders. Also i don't understand why the grinder has only a paddle switch. I like the on and off switch on the side like the corded ones.
    Even the DeWalt 20v / 18v grinder model (DCG405) that are in the UK has a switch on the side that turns on and off and a paddle switch (DCG406) style.
    DeWalt why not in the USA?

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  5 лет назад +2

      Dewalt makes many corded models in the USA that have a slide switch and I believe Milwaukee makes M18's with a slider. But you do not see the slide and lock on because cordless grinders do not last that long and people do not use them for long grinding jobs.

    • @michaelc7283
      @michaelc7283 5 лет назад

      @@WorkshopAddict Yes, i know the switch is on the side on corded model grinder. They just don't make one on the cordless / battery model. Yet there's a model by dewalt in the UK which has a switch on the side but not available in the U.S. which is odd.

    • @WorkshopAddict

      All true statements, but for the DIY guy who wants cordless, this is a good deal for the performance you get. The Dewalt Flexvolt is $299 for the same kit. Three times the money of this and as you said, lots more performance. Not everyone will spend that kind of money on an angle grinder.

    I'm not a fan of the craftsman battery powered angle grinder. I was using one to cut tubing for a motorcycle crash cage I was making, and it just couldn't hold up to the demand. It would stop repeatedly, the batteries would get hot while in use and they had a very short charge life. Personally I would go with Milwaukee, for any power tools, I only bought this grinder because Lowe's is only a couple blocks from my house. I have had good experiences at work with dewalt, so if you ever find yourself in need of an angle grinder while at lowes, I'd go for the dewalt before the craftsman.

    I've had Craftsman tools in my toolbox for over 40 years. They USED to be my go-to brand for just about anything hand tool related. But not anymore. The Craftsman products you see today are not the Craftsman products we all grew up with. Stanley is simply flaunting the Craftsman name in the big box stores to fool prior customers into purchasing products. I would never buy any of the new battery powered Craftsman power tools. That ship has sailed. There are too many other well established battery platforms out there with vast tool selections, better innovation and better support.
