Small mistake: At 1:37, I said "North Korea" was still an independent kingdom. I meant to say just "Korea" was still an independent kingdom. Korea was NOT divided at that time.

    • @bangscutter
      @bangscutter 4 года назад +220

The army top brass are also no fools. They know that generations of brainwashing the citizens where the Kims are regarded as deity, mean that they must install a Kim to power, rather than seize it for themselves (becoming a military junta).
Kim Yo-jong wields the most political power, being de-facto second only to Kim Jong-un. But whether or not the conservative country is prepared for a woman becoming supreme leader, is another story. There is the matter of maintaining the Kim name through male heirs. Her political power may be nullified by this factor.
Don't forget the influence China has on North Korea. China does NOT want the country to collapse, since it would mean refugees pouring across its border in the event of civil war. China will exert significant influence on the North Korean military and political leadership, to install a new supreme leader favourable to China, rather than allow the regime to collapse.

Those who will be effected most will probably try and influence who the new leader will be. Depending on which leader serves the interest of some people as opposed to someone who is a non factor, If no opposes any leader than anything can happen, if people have certain inclinations than things may run as usual, a family member takes over who is male and who fills the Kim role well in order to maintain everyone's positions and keeps things fairly equivalent.

spelled the one way I was taught, me no think for myself. Me big dumb dumb. Does feeling superior too others get you off? It's a word. Thousands of languages exist none are "right" or "wrong". If English didn't exist we would be using another language made by someone. So correcting someone else's writing is like telling them something that is concrete, isn't... The only real language is Math, math is never wrong no matter how you align the numbers it always has the same outcome. Our languages are just baby steps to understanding a real language. Our languages have no correct way of spelling. As days go on meanings change and so do the words themselves. Math is a constant, which would have a "right" and "wrong", since it's concrete. 2+2=4. The answer will always be 4 unless you say 3 then we'll it's wrong. If I asked you a question and you answered with something I personally didn't like it wouldn't be wrong or right, it depends on the individual and their perspective. It relies on how you feel towards the something, nothing about it being correct or incorrect. You felt the need to correct something that was never wrong in the first place. The only reason kim yo jung was able to get away with being in politics is because she is a woman so he doesn't see her as a threat BTW after kim jung un recovered he made jo jung give public apologies and self chastise just to double make sure she doesn't think about usurping his own political power.

I don´t think so. The generals owe their career to the Kims and by abandon the Kim dynasty the army would have to explain this to the people. But the whole country is a Kim family construct, the general couldn´t just say: Look, everything we told you since 1948 was wrong, the Kims are no Gods. Impossible. A North Korea without a Kim leader wouldn´t have a psychological justification and would break apart very soon. Kim-ism is the state religion, it is not only about who is in office...

    • @TR4R

That would cause a civil war if the siblings try to seize the power. Difficult situation indeed. I think in the case that the rest of the family is too incompetent to fight for the power then a military junta would rule the country and maybe, just maybe, that could lead to some kind of democratization. But China most certainly would not like that.

Slight correction. It's believed that Kim Jong-un does have a son, though we know little else about him. Considering the daughter is only eight that means the logical male heir is definitely too young to inherit. This is relevant because North Korea adheres strictly to Confucian moral standards. This means that it would be incredibly difficult for a woman to have any direct position of power. The old guard would never accept it. That is unless, as you suggested, Kim Yo-jong were to do some political jostling and position herself as a sort of regent for her nephew. From what is known about her, she is perhaps the most devious political mind in North Korea. If any woman could fill the top spot, it's Kim Yo-jong. The only other option is chaos and a probable takeover from a Jang Song-thaek type.

North Korea is like a Medieval Kingdom in its early stage where the line of succession is not formally established and power transfer happens by last wills and who the kings court trusts the most. 3 Generations is not really long for a kingdom and I think Kim Jong-un dying young without clear successor will end in civil war.
Many high-ranking people have much to gain and much to lose backing up different candidates inside or outside the Kim family, or even the nation. If a majority of key figures can not agree on a successor, figuring it out during a power transition might be a catastrophy.
So many outside big players are interested in the future of North Korea, if they also can not commit to a single plan, this can be another eternal war.

Kim Jong-un is not dying, he had difficult surgery and everyone is weak short after this difficult surgery. Also there are few innacurities being told here:
    1) Kim Kyong-hui is most likely dead for years (she might have died short after her husband who was executed)
    2) Kim Jong-un has at least 3 children. The oldest son (born 2010), Ju-ae (who was introduced to Rodman) and another child (whose gender is unknown) was supposed to be born in 2015
    3) Kim Jong-nam has except Han-sol at least one daughter and another son with different woman; Jong-chul has a child being born some years after his Eric Clapton visit
    4) Kim Yo-jong is hardly an option. She does not have that strong authority and also she is a woman - high ranking soldiers in patriarch society wont ever follow a woman with lack of charisma and declare her "Goddess".
so there are two possibilities: Kim Jong Un lives 10 and more years = his eldest son will succeed him; If he dies earlier = Kim Jong Chul will succeed him. Kim Jong Chul might not be viewed as incompetent, he just does not care about rulling. To be honest Kim Jong-il was also more interested in music and movies than rulling the country

Kim Yo-Jong has about as much authority and profile as her brother did before he became leader. She's the odds on favorite to succeed in an emergency, as the only member of the family aside from her brother wielding real power, and with a decently well established profile (internally and abroad). She appears to be the favorite of her brother, and therefore presumably the current designated successor if such an individual exists, and she already has de-facto control of State Media... meaning she has control of the narrative and can maneuver. Further still, she's issued statements and even a military order in her own name, and has attended military exercises alongside her brother. Her being a woman is the only thing that could throw a wrench in her rise, and I honestly don't think that will be an ultimate deal breaker.

    What an excellent channel!
We need to put this out there to the younger generation. These kinds of charts and timelines are a remarkably quick way to grasp complex ideas and then put them into context with things today .
    What a marvellous tool.

In the "best case" scenario, it would pass onto Kim Yo-Jong or Jong-chul. Jong-Un is on good terms with his sister. However, if the old guard is persistent on no female leaders, then the next person in line would be Jong-Chul.
Let's be honest, though, neither of them would make for saints in term of leadership.

I really want Han-Sol to be the next leader because he might actually be the only person who is open to ending this regime. If you watch videos of him, he's actually a pretty nice person and wants to open up North Korea. Of course, the government wouldn't be up for that and might get him assassinated.

But then you see how people react when a crazy person on a bus frightens them and all they do is run when they get the chance.
