Agreed on everything except skincare. It's always worth investing in good dermatology approved lotions with sun block factor. Skin cancer is not a joke
plus the way the sun ages you. no matter what you need spf and good skincare. doesnt have to be expensive but should be good quality

I grew up with hoarders and also love my new minimalist life!! I have discovered we still focus on stuff, just getting rid of it now and no longer shuffling it as before.
When I was a child my mother used to put my hair in rags (long pieces cut off old sheets or pillowcases) to give me curls like yours. I'm 70 now and love the idea of you doing the same 60 years on

I'm also getting started on a minimalist journey. My attraction to this is being more environmentally friendly/cautious first and foremost, saving money and less cleaning. For me it's a win win win all around.
Can really relate to this video! A lot of these things I don't buy either. But birthday cards? I absolutely love receiving birthday cards, Christmas cards and Easter cards. I love reading the personalised messages people wright and I don't ever throw them out. Instead I glue them into a scrapbook. Now as I'm getting older and family members are starting to die, it is very nice to go back and see what they wrote to me and see their handwriting
Yes! Aquaphor, i swear by it for lips, cracked heels, hands, anything that needs that care and I live in a tropical country. It's a multiuse balm. For some reason I got so excited when you mentioned Aquaphor.
With MOST of these things you’ve mentioned I’ve realised that I’ve been a minimalist my whole life. Growing up with divorced parents and constantly moving between the two will do that to you. Keep only what you need and don’t collect things lol. It’s so freeing though.
I agree with everything except skincare; it’s become a bit of a hobby for me. I have spent 50 years not caring about my skin and it showed. I use good products and make some of my own concoctions for my skin. And my skin has improved! But I don’t wear much makeup and I’m a nurse and I don’t need a lot of clothes.
What are your skin care products of choice, I’ve just never found anything that impressed me? It all seemed to have same results. 😅
Vitamin E it's the best, but you have to buy the tocotrienols form, you can use it to like serum every night 😉
@@AtoZenLife If you have oily skin and blackheads/ filaments (I have the same issue) you should try Paula's Choice, 2% Salicylic Acid Liquid Exfoliator. One bottle will ladt you forever. I can't live without it. If I stop using it my nose turns into a strawberry.
@@AtoZenLife Agree. You need sunscreen, that's number one for skin care. For oily skin you could try a dermatologist just to check it's not something abnormal. I had a seborreic problem so hard that I was loosing my hair due to the excesive oilyness! I have a minimalist skincare rutine that's face soap, sunscreen and a gel moisturizer.
TL DR. Use sunscreen :)
I agree with this, clothes I want to get rid of 60% of and find my style, skincare I love slathering and pampering my skin.. I know I was a dermatologist in my past life 😂
I love how you live, its amazing, if we all look into how much we consume and waste on stuff we literally don’t need, it’s crazy, and so harmful for our environment, we all need to look into our lives and find our true pleasure, and stop being so materialistic
Thank you for the video ! For the hair I have another tip (maybe you saw it since then!) : No Shampoo , and it WORKS so well. Since two years I have stopped using shampoo and went for rhassoul and apple cider vinegar and then water only. Once your hair gets used to it you litteraly spend 0 euros on it, this is amazing. And the hair are just 1000% natural and beautiful.
What is great is that when you start practicing minimalism, you notice how little you actually need compared to what you "used to need" before.

I understand not doing birthday cards, but words are some people's love language. My partner and I have journals that we write in for each other for every holiday or special occasion. It allows us to keep those notes all in one place so that we can go back and reread them whenever we want.
I don't buy paper towels anymore! It's been about 4 months. I bought 2 bundles of white bar towels at Aldi and keep them washed, folded and stacked on my counter. We were going through paper towels like crazy. I'm so happy I did this!!

Oddly you only use what you have. I had a small flat I leased while away in a one year contract and only had one roll of paper towels sitting at the top of the pantry I pull out on the weekends my husband came up.
Back home now it’s a thing that always on the shopping list and we go through it like crazy.
While I hate it, Im guilty of using them too much because there sitting here.
It’s nice when things work well for people. This is definitely to something that work well for me.
I wasted money on the hair rag curls and they simply frustrated me too much to use. My flat iron makes my hair happy.
I also wasted good money on a “ man razor” and it’s now sitting in a drawer of my vanity, my skin deserves good razors and good skincare.
She looks wonderful without makeup, I used to look amazing without a lot of makeup. But I’ve always be a lash and lip girl. And now brows too. Because I look hideous with no makeup.
We also did the minimal Christmas and birthday thing for years. I do wish I had a one gift limit for my kids when I had them home.
Not anymore though, life is short. I’m enjoying the ridiculousness of over gifting this year.

My hubs is addicted to paper towels. I use cleanup shop rags. once a month wash in hot water & bleach. Paper towels are a waste of money. I use cloth hankies and cut down on kleenex.
For my boyfriend's birthday i got him a few gag gifts but he had been struggling with his anxiety so I used anxiety aids. They were funny, dumb gifts but he keeps them with him all the time for his anxiety💕
A tip on the shaving topic... I had laser hair removal done a few years ago, since then, I only shave the soft 'spots' of hair that grow out every once in a while. The hair only started coming out harder three years after I finished my treatment (which means I need to do another session or two). The initial 6-8 sessions were a bit more expensive, but in the long run, I am saving on razers and all the jazz that comes along with it. It is of course all dependent on hair color and skin pigmentation on how effective such treatments are. Hope the info is helpful :)
Thank you for putting into words the toll that clutter takes on life and relationships. So many countlese hours on moving it around, cleaning it, then having to clean it again because it never got put away......on & on. That you isolated the main reward of this goal is TIME, for RELATIONSHIPS with PEOPLE!!!

I'm retired and we moved 11 years ago to another state. We downsized to reduce moving expenses, but now it's like a person who loses all the weight and later the weight comes back only doubled.
I'm not a messy hoarder but I can relate to them as I have way more Stuff that is basically what I'd call as valuable clutter.
My husband was not a hoarder when we married. He was in the air force and traveled lightly. But, after many years of marriage I realized he was frugal minded because he can repurpose anything and can't bear to throw anything away other than real trash. Even the airlines he worked for would strip parts from one airplane to fix another one.
I clean out my refrigerator when he's sleeping, only because I know he's better off not knowing what I threw out. Lol. He's a good man, just has a tendency to hoard.

#5. Cetaphil is actually amazing and recommended xD Although you should also use something with filter to protect yourself from the sun (which will help to prevent more wrinkles).
#7. Not using makeup is not an option for everyone, but carefully looking for the one which works the best is the cheap but satisfying option. Also, investing in skin care, partly as above.
#9. Skin care doesn't have to be expensive, just have to read and get to know your skin and what it needs.
#13. It is I guess "frugal" or whatever, but it's good that it works for your family. Me and my partner buy each other presents, but we ask each other what we need - something broke or we had realised we need something for hobby or work - that's the perfect gift. When we don't have anything to buy, we just go out together to eat out and celebrate.
And everything else is something I totally agree and either never wasted money on or changed during the last few years. Do others think I live minimalistic? Maybe, maybe not. We buy only what we use and our rooms look clean and spacious despite the fact that they are small. I love living like that.

Loved this video! I don’t buy much makeup, don’t get my nails done (unless a super special occasion), designer clothes, purses, shoes, jewelry, cleaning services, souvenirs, I limit gifts to others - only give them something that I think is really meaningful.

I think I was 35? when I got my first manicure for a cousin's wedding. I grew up frugal with parents who knew the Great Depression & WWII. The inner conflct is between frugality and minimalism! As an artist/creator I envision uses for virtually everything. Hence, watching here!
As I work on elimanating, decluttering, I'm also constantly plagued by how to, where to, the work it takes to send things off responsibly. Tech stuff, cords, multi-material stuff like platsic/metal, items not coded for recycle (US), paint or cleaner, auto or old phone stuff! It catches me up constantly.

@@AtoZenLife I actually buy designer handbags because they last 7-10 years. I used to pay $80-100 for a bag that would break in 10 months. I rather pay $1000 for one that will last ten years.

Cards are a waste of good trees. I buy maybe 2 cards a year.
When I feel creative and it's for a birthday of someone I know will love to get a card (my grandma for example), I make a card out of some cardboard packaging and an old newspaper/ad paper etc. Much fun and the only thing I need to keep in stock/buy for it is some simple glue!
What stops me is cost. It's not as bad now we have the discount shops here (Australia) selling $1 cards but often I'm only giving a $5 or at most $10 gift. My budget is restricted; I simply can't afford to then buy a $4 or $5 card, which the person then feels obligated to keep until *they* declutter. I'd rather give a gift card and a note.
People forget the meaning if xmas...not about gifts galore...I agree with you

I totally agree on presents, over the years I've realized that I have a lot of things at home which I don't use, they just take up space and collect dust and they were given to me as presents! Therefore when I have to give somebody a present, I try to buy things that are meant to be used and not kept forever, like food or a quality beauty products for example. I'm actually a huge fan of shower gels or bath soaps as presents because everyone has a sower/bath and you can have a quality product (obviously I'm not talking about the supermarket ones) at a reasonable price and they often come in lovely boxes. Me and a friend have an agreement we're only giving each other this kind of presents. Also I think it's a waste of money to exchange presents with your partner (unless there's something you really need) better save money for important stuff or spend them on experiences like a day/night out in a place you like.

Depends on the person. I personally hate the shower/bath/soap gifts etc. Because I don't like having a whole collection of them in my bathroom and I'm selective when it comes to what I use and the smell of it. Plus to keep things minimal, I only get stuff once I finish using what I already have. So like I said, all depends on the person. I'd rather someone ask me what I need so I can give them some ideas.

Guilty of hoarding craft supplies. I'm trying to cut back on it. So glad I saw this video. Now I have a new perspective.
Uhm I’m not a “minimalist” AT ALL but I don’t spend money on 47 of the things you listed here. I pay for RUclips and highest data plan because I’m a loner and internet is my only friend. I take care of my skin, it’s a pleasurable hobby, an investment and pride.

Having a community is comforting. What about joining a temple or church to make friends? I'm sure there people who would be blessed to have you as a friend.
I am German, my husband and I haven't owned a car for 21 years now. We use bikes and public transport and here in Bremen there is Cambio, a car sharing system so when we need a car we get the kind we need for the occasion. Most of the things on your list I don't or buy seldom. Maybe it has something to do with culture too, Americans are just so much more into single use items. I've lived in the US as an exchange student in the mid 80ies and came bicycle travelling in 2011. We met a guy who said he didn't want his stuff to last long so he could buy a new item. In Germany there is still a sense of things having to last a lifetime. It is getting less though.
I think Germans are naturally more minimalistic, at least the ones that I have encountered are! Americans definitely have more of a fast fashion and quick use mindset, IMHO, comparatively!

This is encouraging - I pretty much don't do any of that stuff because I'm poor LOLs! My horder instinct is for free furniture (I own too many dining chairs) and for stuff at the op shop - but I'm proud to say that I'm delivering more than I'm picking up these days and I keep a list of things I would like to have so if those things come up, the quality is good and I love it I don't have to angst about it, it fits with the vision. My goal is to only own things that serve a purpose, that I use regularly and that I love. I'm super sentimental about all my sewing and craft stuff, but I realise that's connected with a bunch of trauma, so I'm patiently going through that a little at a time and processing the feelings around that :)

Thanks so much, Sue! I knew if it took me 20 minutes to edit 20 items, it would take waaay to long to do 50 and still keep the schedule, so I tried to make it FAST and FUN. In the winter we still go outside, we drink tea, we do a lot of drawing, and play games as we normally do. :) We enjoy the things we have EVEN MORE because we don't have too much clutter and stress cooped up.
I would be too paranoid to pick up furniture by the side of the road especially upholstered stuff because I have had bed bugs. It isn't worth the risk for me. I do mostly thrift clothes.
get an inexpensive acid exfoliant and retinol (i.e. differin) and you will be good for the blackhead and wrinkles. You can find both for under $30.
Retin A. You live overseas so it is probably over the counter. Use it now and you will never have wrinkles!
Hi! We have a condenser dryer (ours is the Beko brand), which you just plug in. It doesn't require those special attachments; we just empty the water tray after drying clothes. Cheers from The Netherlands!

In Australia we dryer sheets aren't big. I now use microfiber towels in the dryer to make so the clothes dry quickly. I don't use fabric softener either. I hang out jeans to dry naturally.
Aussie here too. My dryer is only used in desperation, although since I have pain and mobility issues my definition of "desperation" is expanding all the time. I'm realising I'd rather spend a couple of dollars extra on the electric bill in two months time than suffer for days now. I used to put tennis balls or specific purpose dryer balls in. The specific spiky dryer balls were bought because the dogs got too excited about the tennis balls. However I had a heap of aluminium foil left over after a crafting idea so now I'm using Alfoil balls and they speed up dryer time amazingly.

I didn’t even pay full price for my wedding dress! It was on clearance and fit perfectly. When we bought our house, we had 6 months to fix it up before moving in, so we bought our furniture a little at a time and found so many amazing deals.

You can also curl you hair by tying your hair into braids when wet. I make around six or more. If you want smaller, fighters curls, tie more of them. I leave them in overnight.
I am so, so, so jealous of people with low maintenance hair. I have the thickest, driest hair (thanks mom) with the most boring color... I cut down on hair products but still.. I can't use solid conditioner or stuff like that, they just don't work. But I invested some more money in a really good hair straightener and it totally changed my life, now I only have to do it once a week and I don't need all the products to keep my hair straight.
I live in Germany where a decent haircut cost me a fortune so I'm trying to go every 3 months and not every 2, but oh boy....
Marula oil was a game changer for me in terms of hair care, so if anyone with dry hair reads this: try it.
Baby shampoo is the answer for many - a hair surgeon told my friend this secret. By the way people would do anything for thick hair- even kidnap so be careful. I had a guy with a scissors sitting behind me on a bus. Anyway
Learn to cut your own hair. I learned while working and living in Asia for 8 years. A ton of YT videos on this
@@MT-if1jr no. There are types of hair you can’t learn how to cut from RUclips videos. If everyone could do that, there wouldn’t be hair dressers in the world.
I cannot cut my thick, wavy hair since it needs more than chopping off the lengths. I need to reduce volume and I need layers. And only a professional can do that.
I mean sure I could cut it and it would look like shit but who likes to look like a Chucky doll? Not me.

Love my epilator! Been using one for 40 years. My daughter who's in her 30s says it's the best personal care thing I ever taught her 💕
They're excruciating - BUT my tip is to get your legs waxed before using the epilator for the FIRST time, and then use only an epilator as the hairs grow back. Genuinely much easier and virtually pain-free.

Do most of these already since I became more minimalist and eco conscious a few years ago. But want to save my leaf razor is a life saver! My blades cost maybe .10 cents each??? I change them out every 6 months. On the containers, I tried glass too and found it too bulky especially for commuting to and from work on a bike/hiking. So I invested in metal containers! Life changing, they're light weight and durable and sooooo much easier to use. :D Just some little tidbits for anyone looking for other alternatives.
When I started changing my health direction I stopped buying many of the things you mentioned because of toxicity. Hair color, nail polish, heavy makeups and creams, perfumes and colognes-too strong, I have a strong sense of smell; scented body washes, shampoos and conditioners, plastics, aluminum foil and deodorants containing aluminum, fluoride toothpaste and mouthwashes, fast food, off sodas for about 15 years now, etc. stopped Christmas altogether…it’s rooted in pagan aspects. And I love the last LOTTERY TICKETS.

We are exactly the same on what I don’t buy. :) We never used dryer sheets... is just useless and get the clothes ruined. ( the fabric )

I completely agree with the razor situation. I went to buy a razor a few years ago and when I checked the mens section the exact same razor from the same company was half the price for men than for women. The only difference was the colour!
I use the razors from hotels we stay in. I keep them so that when I need one, I don’t need to shop.
Friends and family give me things and I feel guilty letting them go. I’ve asked that the family doesn’t exchange gifts for the holidays but the in-laws insist. I resent the fact that certain family members are not respectful when it comes to giving our children candy when we ask them not to and refusing to remove their shoes before entering our home.

When I became a mom, I imagined my little boy pulling at/off necklaces or bracelets or getting scratched by my rings so I stopped buying fashion jewelry. I'm content with my lovely wedding ring and simple earrings.
A really long time ago I stopped buying cable tv and havent missed it at all. I also stopped paying for tanning sessions and professional nail salon trips. Natural is cheaper!
(My pet peeve is people with more cosmetics than they could possibly use before it expires.)

Personal care... skincare, nail polish and a hair dryer are necessities for me! 😀 Also, I wouldn't use the Aquafor that is made for skin rather than the lip balm that is expected to be eaten... haven't checked the ingredients on both but I am guessung they are slightly different. That said, I love Aquafor! Game changer for my dry feet and lips.
I have dry curly hair, so that is the main thing that I always make sure to have is hair creams and gels. It is just not a priority item for me to make at home.

Haha, I love my epilator! 😂 I use it on my legs only. It works for me because I find I don't get ingrown hairs like I do with shaving. And I don't find it painful. I think tweezing my brows hurts more! Love your videos. New subscriber here. 💕

I had glass food containers and the tops around where the lids go on shattered a tiny bit and I'm so lucky I noticed the glass in my food before eating it. I'm kinda nervous about glass now.
As a total clutz everything glass is a danger zone for me. If I buy a large jar of coffee I put it in smaller jars if not ziplock bags!
Some really good ideas you got there. I will try to apply them. But why Cetaphil? It's full of "spreadable plastics" like petrolatum, dimethicone, acrylates, polymer etc. These have no value for the skin and can't get filtered out of waste water. You could try jojoba oil for example. It nourishes the skin, leaves no oily film and lasts for years. And with its glass bottle it's environmentally friendly inside and out. 🙂
I was thinking the same… I have been using coconut oil for years as my make up removal, moisturizer, body and hand lotion… I mix it some drops of my favorite essential oil of the moment…

I like epilators because they do the same job as waxing only they only grab your hair, not your skin, so they're much less painful. Just don't use them after you've showered, your skin must be dry. They're much better for the planet, as you can reuse them many times before they break. And unlike razors hair grows soft, not like sandpaper.

Wow I feel pretty good that many of these items are things I no longer buy either (or at least I've changed things up)! My husband and I haven't really exchanged gifts in years and have organically just seen things we liked, said we want it, and have assigned it to the nearest holiday 😆 My husband used to buy me a card every year on our anniversary but it's funny this year we ended up realizing we're sort of good not spending the money anymore AND not adding to the card collection.
That's exciting to know about Aquaphor! I usually use it if my lips need some extra recovery help from dryness, but it's great to know there are other perks should I cease to love my Burt's Bees 😉

Condensation driers don't need to have a ventilation. There is a tank where the water goes to and you just empty it to the sink after the drying is finished. I'd advice to buy pump condensation drier which is most energy saving version because it cools and heats the air locked inside. However they take approximately one to two hours longer to dry but they are very gentle on your electricity bills. I have logic vent condensation drier because I am.renting and moving frequently so I can just load it to the truck and put it to my new house or apartment anywhere it can fit may it be hallway, kitchen or bedroom. Basically anywhere I find a working socket.

Try a Kleen Kanteen water bottle. We use them and love them. You can get a wide mouth one or the regular sized opening. They also make different lids. My son and I have the pop top one and my 2 year old has a sippy lid. They make small bottles for kids too. We keep them insulated by using my husband’s beer cozies 😂 Or if you prefer you can find cute patterned ones or rubber ones on amazon. So many options that aren’t glass!

We have tried these for thr boys. Bought them last December and are still using them now. I have had to replace one sports top. Great quality and have paid for themselves in all the plastic bottles I haven't had to buy. Much better for environment too.

One thing that I actually did by to streamline my life was hangers! I have no dresser and am a huge fan of hanging rack systems if you have no closet. You can see everything you own and even if you do the Japanese fold method will save space, in my experience.
I definitely do both! Some things are just better on hangers IMHO. 🙌

There are even more environmental friendly razors out there. I have a Leaf razor, which first costs a ton of money but it pays of so much because there is almost no waste or additional expenditures anymore. You can use simple razor blades without any plastic waste or something and the results are so much cleaner. I change the blades every 3 months and it's a dream 😊

For some reason my legs no longer grow hair (after pregnancy). My son left home for the military 6 years ago. As a sentimental hoarder I still have his razor with the same blade & that’s what I use.

Well I made it past the Fall decor without adding to my collection. I’ll be taking out things that were stashed in closets and maybe even decluttering some of that. I think 50 was too big of a number for one video though I appreciated things like lottery tickets and late fees.
