    PLEASE READ IF YOU'RE CONSIDERING GETTING A TURTLE: Just wanted to say I no longer recommend using aquarium sand in turtle setups. The turtle can consume it and it can cause some serious problems. If you want to use sand, use very fine grain sand or play sand. But it's best to use rocks or pebbles that are large enough to where the turtle can't consume them.

    • @GabrielaRamirez-yu9fh
      @GabrielaRamirez-yu9fh 4 года назад +8

      Larenzia Hunter there’s not much to it really. But the aquarium size does matter depending on the size of your turtle. Lets say the turtle is 4 inches, he’s gonna need a 40 gallon tank. U could always just get a tub instead like he did in the video. And like he said, use rocks that are big enough so that they wont consume them instead of sand. A good filter is super important because red eared sliders STINK SO BAD and their water gets dirty SUPER fast.

    • @GabrielaRamirez-yu9fh

      Larenzia Hunter oh and also my turtles ALWAYS knock down the plants and they always move the big rocks i have for them to bask on so keep that in mind when decorating...it wont last lol

      Getting some turtles for my kids. Actually a friend is giving me her 2 turtles. I'm not sure what kind they are or what she has in the tank. I do know there's water in the tank lol. What are your suggestions to get based on need for them for the cage. Thanks, these will be a first for me and I really don't know to much about them. I will be reading up on them asap

    • @CarsonsAquatics
      @CarsonsAquatics  5 лет назад +3

      They will need a two-part lamp with one heat bulb & one UVB bulb. The general rule is 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle, for example a 2 inch turtle needs at least 20 gallons. they need a dry spot they can go to bask. i recommend getting a water heater to keep the water around 78 degrees. i feed mine like 4 pellets & some dried shrimp every day, & every couple days i give him a piece of lettuce. hope this helps & good luck with your turtles!

    I love the setup. The filter and heater need good water flow around them. So it's best not to block them with stones. You can purchase heater covers that prevent turtles from sitting directly on the heater.
    Or you can purchase a heater specifically made for turtles that comes with a plastic sort of cage around it. Also, the heater should be fully submerged.
    Once your turtle starts to grow he'll need a better filter. He's adorable and I'm glad you have him there with you.

    About adding fish/another turtle: 10/10 would not recommend as a long term plan.
    Any fish you put in are likely to get chased or eaten by Sheldon. Even if he never catches them, being trapped in an enclosure with a predator will cause stress and make them more likely to get sick. The only time I've heard of someone successfully cohabitating a turtle with fish was with African cichlids (apparently they're smart and fast enough to stay alive, they're also generally fairly stress hardy).
    Turtles are not social and get very territorial with age. If you get more turtles than you are committing to an extremely large enclosure to keep everyone happy. Depending on species/personalities of the turtles you may not be able to keep them together and have to seperate them for their safety. Even at a young age it's important to monitor basking usage and feeding times to make sure resources are being shared and one turtle isn't outcompeting the other.
