Man I’ve always wanted to weld since I was in school but never really thought I could always doubted myself lol recently went and bought me a Lincoln stick welder started RUclipsing how to weld and came across your channel thanks for the knowledge I’ve probably watched all your videos lol I always like the videos before I even watch them have a good one
"Kinda like this starched shirt makes me feel good in the morning" bud now I want a starched shirt.. love your vids bud working my way into the pipe fence world.
Austin, have watched a few of your videos. I owned a somewhat specialized welding company for 30 years and though I'm not much of a welder myself I've had many bad welders and a few really good welders work for me. What I like about your work is the pride you take in your projects. Not a complete 100% accurate statement as in one case in particular it was wrong but I could usually tell how a man would work and care about the work was how his rig was equipped and how it looked when he showed up. I've always wanted the quality of the work to be as if I was doing it form myself to last way beyond my time here. Impressed with what and how you do it with so much attention to the simple details that add to the quality and look of your work. Closing down after my 30 years of doing but would have been proud to have had you working with us.
Just found this video, A old pipeline welder 1977 from Kilgore, Texas showed me how to weld magnetic pipe. He wrapped the negative lead around the negative pipe at least five times, which worked very well in welding it!🇺🇸🤠
On one of my jobs, we had to build a pole barn using magnetized 3" drill stem. Took me forever to figure out how to weld it. I finally found an old welder that gave me the answer. he said to wrap the ground cable around the post a few times I was welding, and it should do the trick, and it worked great, never had another problem welding magnetizes pipe.
The fence looks real good. Neat work as always by you. I might offer one hint, leave the stretcher on the wire when you line up the steel posts, then move that wire to the top. Stretch each additional wire starting from the top and work down. That way you don’t have the existing wires interfering with the new wire as it’s being stretched up each time.
Been building fence few years and learned how to tie wire off to post or the clips like you got here, and the old timer I learned from showed me his way, and it looks a lot like the way you’ve tied it off here. Spring like end look at the clip. Great work bud, always a pleasure to watch!
I've built miles of fence over the years. I've never done corners or stretch poles that way, I'd always drive 2 uprights 10' apart then a 3rd pipe 11' out and that one would be 18" out of the ground. I would use 1 cross pipe. All my uprights are driven 5' in the ground and I'd drive my t posts too with a hydraulic driver. On magnetized pipe, if you wrap your lead around the pipe a few times that would help. Your fence looks good and it's what I'd call a 50 year fence but you put more effort in to make it look good. I've done a 1/2 mile straight line in 1 day with 1 other person tied and all. Time is money. Again, good looking fence.
I like your method of the circle cut-outs better than coping the ends. You don't have to worry about a "precise" length measurement for the cope, getting a large gap and needing something to hold the unwelded end; just cut the horizontal a little bit long and jamb that puppy in the holes and weld 'er up.
I like saddling the horizontal pipes. Vice-Grip chain clamp around both post to hold the saddled pipe in place allows me to adjust it up or down if needed to make it look right. Don’t get to work on level ground too much and always trying to make things “flow” with the ground. Thanks for the video.
Vice-Grip chain clamp also makes a GREAT GROUNDING CLAMP. Just passing that on for the newbies. I do work with 1.5 in. pipe (2" in. O.D.) using saddling / Cop(e}ing method for hand railing.
I know it made sense to weld the cable keepers on to tie the barbed wire to since you had to tie the net to the same post, but I wouldn't make it a habit. In my opinion that is the weak spot in the fence.
agreed .... wrapping the wire 'around' the pipe would prevent all the pull being put on a sharp 180 degree bend in the wire (which always weakens wire).
I am always surprised that you do not have a fire extinguisher out when working in fields. I know you said in this one that the grass is wet. I got surprised one time a long time ago as the grass caught fire which I did not see as my hood was down and the fire came up around me. Singed the cuffs of my pants before I knew what was happening. I do enjoy your videos.
Thanks for sharing with us Austin. You did great on that fence. Hopefully a 9’ set in will do great. Lots of wet in that ground where you’re working. Stay safe and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, catch you later. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻✋🏻✋🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Ross. Lengthiness the spreader pipe between the uprights helps to prevent “H” tilting. I have soft soil. Some of my spreaders on my “H” braces is 16 feet.
Thank you. I had no idea that having pipe stuck in the earth can cause problems of magnetism on the pipe and cause the area your trying to weld have arc blow. Yes I learned of this way back in school of how changing the magnetic field can cause the flame of a arc to move. Simple stuff to know how to mitigate this problem working in the field. Thanks again. great video. 👍
Hi Austin! Love your videos. How did you tie off the stretched wire to the little welded on loops on the vertical pipes? A close up would be great. I tie around the post, and put no close angle bends or strains in the wire. Not sure how a little loop avoids. Thanks
Christmas bells are a great present. Everyone seems to want them. I use a 3/4" pipe 2" long. I flare out the one end and put a stem with a ball in the other end then swage it down tight. I like giving noise makers to kids so they can drive their parents nuts. Especially if they are hung over. mary Christmas!
Nice level! …I have the same ones. Best levels on the market for fitting pipe hands down. They’re worth every penny. Especially the magnetic torpedo. It’s funny, everytime I look in your toolbox, I see all my tools. Hahaha
Just wanna say your tool chest on your mobile rig are an inspiration, such attention to detail and reflection of your quality and passion for your craft, they are, look always so meticulously tidy and organised....
Austin your making me want to make some pipe fence around my house. LOL we don't see that much here in North Carolina so I may just be a trend setter. Awesome content buddy hope we can meet up one day
The fence job looks real good. Neat work as always by you. I might offer one hint, stretch the wires from top to bottom. You can still use the wire on the bottom to line up steel posts by just leaving the stretcher on then move it up to the top. If you do the top first and work down you don’t have the wires getting hung as you are pulling them. I always use 3 posts for corners, but that’s just my design preference since I think the additional brace post is at least as strong as going deeper with 2 posts. Bottom line is that if it holds it’s good.👍
I had this happen welding on pipe at a port in NC. The pipe line had been magnetized and we finally figured out we had to coil the ground around one side of the splice a bunch and switch the polarity.
A Trick I've always used to find center when using fractions is to keep the top number and double the bottom. Eg. 7/8. Becomes 7/16 which is half. If the whole number is even just half it. If the whole number is odd, add one half inch to your now halfed fraction. 2-7/8 = 1-7/16. 3-7/8 = 1-7/16 + 8/16 (1/2) or 1-15/16 that 1/2" comes from the extra whole number when its not even. Always helped me, especially when dealing with funky fractions and lots of them. Yall have a good one!
No comments A just glad to see you get a little dirty every now and then I had a center punch just like it one more thing there's really no rule of thumb to weld on old magnetized drill tubing up down and after you seal it up put a2nd pass which you do and I like that style you youse slipen it in
Nice videos. I got a land I want to make my own fences and corrals. What welding machine do you recommend me I will use 2 3/8 metal pipe ? My budget is short
I am just starting this video sbd not sure what your aboit to say but I akways wrap my ground lead a few wraps and something an old school pipe welder taught me, and I’m not sure why it works. But sometimes you can smack the piece of steel that’s magnetic with a small beater to make it ring, 99 percent of the time it fixes the magnetic problem I’m having. The wrapped negative lead helps but after smacking the piece ot wioo cure it
I build fence for a guy here in Kansas, it doesn’t matter how deep you get them on a flat ground like that, the cows will just break the wire or push over the post.
If you want braces to not pull, it's best to use three pipes in the ground. And 10 ft between each pipe. Wire was stretched backwards. After the t-posts are in, take the bottom wire and move it to the top. Level all the t-posts, then stretch the remaining wires top to bottom.
Interesting video to watch now granted I know absolutely nothing about welding. I am curious as to why you left the rig so far away from where you were working I thought if it was closer you wouldn’t have to have as much leads out for the welding gear and if you needed something from the truck you’re not walking back and forward as much. Now I did consider it was in between the two jobs at the halfway mark but what’s the stop you doing one job packing up your gear and then driving down to the other job.
Saddling is a lot faster if you cut 6" saddles from 2-7/8 pipe at your shop, then use 2-3/8 pipe for the cross bar. Or use any pipe combination where one slips inside the other. There is a bit more welding but fitting things together is much easier.
Hey. Quick tip. Get you one of those round, orange extension cord reels and put your string on it. They will flat hold a mile of string and can be rolled up almost as fast as it can be fed out. I don't celebrate Christmas, so, sadly, no favorite song.

Nice work Austin, I’m curious of your thoughts on pricing your fence jobs, I’m in oregon and 2 7-8 are 98 per joint I just bid a 900’ fence and it works out to be about 25 bucks a foot? Complete labor and material? It’s a 5’ fence, one top rail and one coped rail a foot lower, post spacing at 10’ , pipe alone is $8300.00, plus trucking,48” no climb wire is $2000 , digging holes and cement, it would be a super good fence but I’m thinking he won’t go with it at that price? And I feel I’ve already cut my labor as much as I can. Anyway good to see you still making videos , I remember back when you where pipelining.
added tip to keep bulls in that tend to jump a five wire fence is to weld a 2 foot piece of 3/8 rebar (Hot wire fence post) to the tops of the T-post and run 2 lines of hotwire ABOVE the existing 5 wire fence. With that extra two rungs of hot-wire, bulls think twice about jumpin fences. IF you still get bulls that get out, another post hanging out horizontally from middle of T-post, about waist hi, with another line will do the trick. This keeps the bulls from ever even getting close enough to the fence to jump it. Another remedy is take that damn Bull to the sale and get rid of him........
Not sure if you've ever pondered the idea.. But have you ever thought of doing a Patreon account? I've never seen any welder have one, but I have seen them for motocross where people will send in videos for critique and it's literally a few dollars a month the individual pays. I think it'd be a great way to connect with the community, offer real life feed back, and build your company. With the large following I feel it'd be quite successful. Y'all do offer your classes but it's just a thought! Thanks
I’ve actually had a patreon account for motocross.. funny how coming along to this comment but, I agree. It definitely gives a closer Q&A and some evaluations usually within a few days time. I think this channel would prosper if it gave it a second look on it. 👍
Nice job! I think it might be faster to burn the holes in the vertical pipes, a little less layout and a little more forgiving vs coping the horizontal pipes.
Cut a pipe and weld a cap or a t in a saddle the height the t post should be. Use that to drive the t posts to your bottom strand. This will make all your t posts the same height. Question, why did you put up a 2 bar brace and 5 strands of wire? Won't animals get through? Also kickers on your brace would allow to actually get your wire tight, come summer it's going to stretch. The holes versus saddling looks WAY better!
using a chop saw cut two 33 degree angles off the ends of the pipe forming a point on the pipe ends. Obviously line it up so your point is the same on both ends. Rotate 45 degrees and weld it up. Its not perfect usually but close enough to work.
@@arosswelding I’m an EMT in Sacramento California and I’d give anything to change careers. I bought a welder and have been burning rods since. It’s hard to find a welder such as yourself with patience to teach . I work full time so I only can teach myself unless I could find someone to hire and teach me. So I’m going it alone in my garage. Your videos have been a huge help and inspiration, you do a great for service people like me . The world is so ugly these days but your videos are a ray of sunshine . Keep on keeping on man , I imagine you’ll continue to be successful.
This Christmas it will be Blue Christmas. Jingle Bells is not a Christmas song. Nowhere does it say Christmas. It is one of my favorite winter songs. What is the horse's name in Jingle Bells? Do you fill your post with anything or just cap them? I got a job building a Santa Sleigh. He was so impressed he had me make what seemed like a billion bells. It was a life-size sleigh so Santa could in it and take pictures. I made him sign on the bill not to be used as a sleigh. it was just for pictures. That was about 30 years ago and he has been pulling behind his horse and sometimes behind a snowmobile. It was all made of mild steel and going strong. Merry Christmas.
You can wind your ground cable around a few times. If it gets worse wrap it the other direction. AC can also work for the first pass. Not every portable has AC current though. Try moving your ground around to different places or change direction of travel.
I've always found welding magnetized pipe it welds better with straight polarity, don't have as much arc force but when the pipes magnetized, straight polarity is definitely the way to go
Austin, I need some fence built. 350' of pipe and cattle panel with a 12' gate across my driveway. I was thinking just 2.5" or 3" vertical pipes with the cattle panel between the uprights. It's a straight shot with existing fence on both sides of my property - no obstructions. How do I get a quote from you? I have a feeling you're way too expensive for my budget at the moment, but it would be good to have an idea of what it would cost to have the great Austin Ross come put his signature on my property. ;) We're about 8 miles south of Greenville TX.
You can go to my website and click get a quote and we’ll get back with you as soon as we can! Thanks for the consideration! Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas!
Cutting it either way is basically the same amount of cut . Cutting your post for one man is easier cleanup less and lateral will hold itself up . -28 below here today . Merry Christmas

I like your method of the circle cut-outs better than coping the ends. Man I agree 100 percent
I agree. Not a pipe welder at all and seeing how they have to lay that shit out in terms of measurements makes my brain hurt lmao.
I like saddling the horizontal pipes. Vice-Grip chain clamp around both post to hold the saddled pipe in place allows me to adjust it up or down if needed to make it look right. Don’t get to work on level ground too much and always trying to make things “flow” with the ground. Thanks for the video.

Always helped me, especially when dealing with funky fractions and lots of them. Yall have a good one!

added tip to keep bulls in that tend to jump a five wire fence is to weld a 2 foot piece of 3/8 rebar (Hot wire fence post) to the tops of the T-post and run 2 lines of hotwire ABOVE the existing 5 wire fence.
🤣
Austin if you wrap your ground cable around that pipe hole bunch time it will demagnitize that pipe
do you have any rust problems with the braces fully welding them like that?
Not sure if you've ever pondered the idea.. But have you ever thought of doing a Patreon account? I've never seen any welder have one, but I have seen them for motocross where people will send in videos for critique and it's literally a few dollars a month the individual pays. I think it'd be a great way to connect with the community, offer real life feed back, and build your company. With the large following I feel it'd be quite successful. Y'all do offer your classes but it's just a thought! Thanks
We actually tried one a couple years ago and didn’t get a real good response but we may have to try it again now that the audience has grown.
I’ve actually had a patreon account for motocross.. funny how coming along to this comment but, I agree. It definitely gives a closer Q&A and some evaluations usually within a few days time. I think this channel would prosper if it gave it a second look on it. 👍
Is that a Starrett punch? If it is, totally worth the money.
I recently bought a miller bobcat 260, what rod do u recommend to use on something what u doing now?
Austin how did you dig a 10 foot hole?
We used and extension
Doing a 2 an 3/8 pipe fence job. What is the fastest way to saddle the pipe?
using a chop saw cut two 33 degree angles off the ends of the pipe forming a point on the pipe ends. Obviously line it up so your point is the same on both ends. Rotate 45 degrees and weld it up. Its not perfect usually but close enough to work.
You must have the same sky as we do here in one gray!
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
I love your videos man .
I appreciate you watching them!!
Thats some soft ground. If i try to drive T posts where i live (alot of shale) you work yourself to death to get one a couple feet in the ground
What do you use to record?
Man, where I am at you are lucky if you can drive stem pipe more than 4 foot in the ground. More times than not, you have to settle for 3. LOL
Seems there should be a way to demag the tubing.
You can wind your ground cable around a few times. If it gets worse wrap it the other direction. AC can also work for the first pass. Not every portable has AC current though. Try moving your ground around to different places or change direction of travel.
@@amirlach all correct! Don’t forget moving your ground around and welding from opposite directions
What rod did you use to weld the pipe
Oh, I thought you forgot your coffee mug. Is it KOFFEE TIME YET?
I've always found welding magnetized pipe it welds better with straight polarity, don't have as much arc force but when the pipes magnetized, straight polarity is definitely the way to go
That’s when AC starts to shine
What rods were you using? Sorry if i missed it in the video
That ground sure is soft at 13:20 , I see the need for the 10 foot post ! Is this clay or are you in a different type of soil ?
Looking good Austin !
Hey Ross are you ok? Missing your videos thought I would check on you😇👍🏻
nothing like driving 4 miles worth of T-posts to build character especially when you hit a rock
You can wrap some copper wire or thin tubing around magnetized pipe and it will weaken if not completely dampen the magnetism.
Cutting it either way is basically the same amount of cut . Cutting your post for one man is easier cleanup less and lateral will hold itself up . -28 below here today . Merry Christmas
What's the best barbered wire to buy that won't stretch as bad?
Hi tensile. Oklahoma wire 15 1/2 Guage is one example
