In this video, I take you along while I continue to build this custom pipe fence. I’m Austin Ross and on this channel, I share my experiences as a rig welder and what I have going on in my own mobile welding business. Today’s fence is custom fence for a property entrance. We talk some about pipe coping and saddling pipe vs. cutting into post for a more seamless process. I gotta say I've been building fences for about 25 years and that boys is a good lookin job!
The entusiasm and happines on the job is refreshing. Fabrication and welding jobs are not always fun and not always great but when things go well, it is a good time. It's worth it to enjoy the good times and take them as they come.

Yes always starch your shirts they last longer welding
The fastest way is actually to cope one side of the cross members and make holes on the other side of the uprights. Cut cross members slightly long and you can even cope them with the saw. Can do it on time off and keep a stack of cross members ready if needed.
Diablo baldes are awesome. I recently switched to them and I was impressed. We cut over 120 stainless rods 1.250” thick and blade still cuts great.

I'll tell ya this. Video may be a year old, but I was supervisor at a fab shop in white oak Texas and we hired so many rig welder and pipeliners that did not know too much. Most lasted two weeks before they dragged up. Most had an ego that had no evidence of skills. You sir are a fabricator, you are smart and your the most humble I have ever seen, you let your skills talk instead of your mouth. That is a good quality that most don't have. Continue with the good work that you do..
Quick tip/ suggestion for you, weld you a socket the size of your knuckle on your torches on the inside of your box on ur truck. So u don’t have to use a crescent to take them on and off. Use a file in between the quick connects to tighten and loosen
I had a pipe fence, cattle guard, gate, and h brace gig back in 2015.. kept me busy for 7months! GodBless, that was after the crash of 2015.
The entire gig was old 3"/6" liner pipe.
Terrible to fab with all that melted liner ruining hope for clean torch tip cuts.
Arc blowin allover the place even after heating up and wrapping 4-5 times around with bare copper clipped to my ground.
You, my friend, are lucky to have new pipe for the job
Fence is legit tho, solid, plumb, and level.
Diablo has always been a very surprisingly decent brand, just about anything they make with the right touch will usually outlast your expectations.

I work on a ranch and we have used this method for years. We like this method for the fact that no condensation gets trapped in the horizontal pipes and rusts them out.

Iam a crane operator, I work around petroleum fields in Canada I worked alongside lots of trades. What determines good work for me is something this guy has and that his setup and gear and thats his choice of clothes I noticed his wearing white, I never seen a welder wearing white before. Good on you man keep up the good work

I own a fabrication shop (40yrs now) and the Diablo blades do real well... When we first used one we were skeptical, but they are working real well and for an affordable price... We are also using the Diablo sanding disc's and they are rocking as well... Blown away and loving it.. We will keep using that brand for now...
I cut with a cold saw everyday. I started using a wax cut stick type lubricant. I do believe it helps prolong blade life.

Diablo is basically the best 👌 I've never been let down by them. Commercial electrician, dry chop saw, grinding wheels, sawzal blades, skill saw blades. Diablo all the way

I’ve never been a fan of the diablo blades for chop saws but I love their sawzall blades. To me they seem to be the best bang for your buck blades.
You see the Projectfarm video comparing them all?? Diablo sawzall blades beat everything else.

Really enjoy watching your videos, it’s kind of nice to do something different for a change, it’s a lot less pressure welding fence instead of mainline everyday!!!
I’ve never seen it done with cutting holes in the pipe like that. Usually it’s coped or pressed on the end. I like the way you guys did it though and the fence looks great.
You need some beefy press set-ups and a die for pressing down tube that size. It works well for small thin-wall tube, but you need double-digit tonnage on a press to get a decent result with something like 3" sch 40.
Our shop had to do a run of 'em for parking-meters of all things, the meter bolts to the flattened section of pipe and the cylindrical end gets embedded in concrete.
“show iron”, hell yea so good. Early morning is the best.

I build quite a bit of fence, sometimes I cut holes in the upright, and sometimes I saddle the middle rails. I like cutting the upright better. I think you get a better weld when you cut the upright. That’s a nice looking fence by the way. Just got finished building 1800 ft of fence just like that. Nothing looks much better than a nice fence!
I've been using those Diablo blades for a while and love them! That fence looks great, nice job!
To cope every freaking rail TWICE! I think this way is way better. Not to mention when coping the length has to be perfect!!
I bet that circle burner is tough to learn though! Not so much on flat surfaces but the round pipe with the distance from the tip constantly changing wow! Patience was the exact right word! Looks great!
This popped up up because I was watching a flux core how too I guess? What a meticulous job, I've never seen a fence like that in SC. Those top and circle cutting jigs, cool, all the measuring, prep and joints, Wow, that should last a while, nice job.

Thats a darn nice job. I have a fein slugger saw and would consider a diablo blade for a replacment. These saw blades are getting better all the time.

That's an impressive looking pipe fence! I dig diablo blades and that hole cutter is a handy little good deal i may need to invest in.
been here before, but for cow pens and corrals. we didn't have a torch to use, so we hammered the end of the pipes to get em closer together and then just butt welded em.

Not sure why this popped up on my feed but I liked it so much I subbed!
Another fence I built was I used 4 inch sqaure tubing up rights turned so they was turned in a diamond fashion had 1 inch pipe for runners in 24 foot lengths. Spaced the upright 12 apart cut the hole in uprights and slid the flexible pipe threw center uprights and ends in each end and built fence in half the time because of labor savings weld it up and primed and painted. Later discovered I just needed to weld the center upright and leave ends open to save even more time.

Get your air compressor and blow it in the rollers. I worked at the mine with with heavy copper and we had to roll them on those type of rollers and we’d get the same problem. But using the air compressor helped a lot, took the debris out
Damn that's a great fence. And not coping the pipe is a great thing to keep in mind if you're doing enough of it.

I ran a few thousand feet last year and I switched to a plasma cutter. Made a template and marked the circles, then super quick work popping the holes. You’re work is meticulous.
When you said you weren't expecting much out of that diablo blade I just kind of chuckled and thought 'just you wait' :)I use them in everything that cuts wood or metal. The Skil SPT78MMC22 with the 8-1/4 metal blade would work thru one layer of that pile in 15 minutes without ever lifting a stick.Thanks for doing this video Austin, it's a great looking fence and your partner has my utmost respect for cutting all those holes- what a job!
Diablo makes the best stuff. They are the only grinder discs I will buy anymore because it is the only brand I have never had a disc shatter.
Sawzall blades are 100x better too.
We call it “Show Pipe” in the Building Trades. After a week of hangers, ya gotta get something in the air!

I am a woodworker learning to weld that’s how I found your channel but I own pretty much everything Milwaukee and as far as sawblades go for wood of course Diablo blades are my favorite I don’t know anything about metal blades like for cut off saws or anything

I love them diablo 4 in blades on my angle grinder for Aluminum work. Fuel tankers ect. Sure its a bit scary but it is fast
Very cool :) I can say with confidence that I have never seen someone build a pipe fence before. In fact, I don't think I have ever even seen a pipe fence before. I've seen fences built out of preformed and welded tubing, which is then bolted together, but nothing like what was shown in the video :)

I love my Diablo blade been using them for years last much longer than the blade I had before as long as you don't have any broken teeth you can resharpen them on a harbor freight blade sharpener as long as you get it set up right it works pretty good I tried that after the only local blade sharpener quoted me a price that was only like 3 bucks less than a new blade so I got the HF unit and after a lil time getting it set up and minor mods it works great to get double or triple the life outta some blades 👍👍👍

I'll give it to you, that looks really nice. I just got done doing almost 600 feet myself on my place. I normally cut the pipes in half with a saw and then use a plasma cutter and saddle jig to cut those halves into fourths and that normally leaves a seven to 8 foot long post. I get four posts with three cuts. I then pound the posts with a driver and set the smaller 2 3/8 in the saddle and weld it out. (2 7/8 posts) I have yet to screw up a saddle pounding it. I like cable or sucker rod because it's fast. I'm not really a professional, I just like metal fence around my farm and not wood and I do what's easy.
I’ve been building me a pipe steel fence at my house. I tell ya, the nice thing about doing it this way is that it’s a lot easier to weld your horizontals in if you are working by yourself. I’ve been coping mine out and using my backhoe with a chain to hold one end. This seems so much easier. I run a plasma cutter off my Trailblazer and cope with it but I can sure as hell cut a hole in some pipe. Done that plenty on other fab jobs. What else is nice is that you can do each step with that particular tool all at once. Then move to the next and so on. Like a one man assembly line. Run a chop saw to cut all your lengths. Then run your torch or plasma cutter to cut all your holes. Then just spend a few days burning rods. I think the quality would go up too. I hate getting into the groove and things are just burning in nicely and then I have to stop and set up to get to the point where I’m burning rods again. It would be nice to just keep on rocking. Very nice work. I’ll remember that on my next fence job. Been getting more of those lately.

I couldn't believe how much it was to have a welded H brace barbed wire fence put it. To do a straight line 1/8 of a mile 6 wires in northern California was $3250. These guys must make bank!!

In the Oil Patch it is common to find pipe that would not past pressure test, We buy it for scrap prices. When i was a kid in Houston we build all our fences wite pipe.
No it’s actually pretty cheap. I have seen it as cheap as a 25 cents a foot. It’s old drill pipe that doesn’t meet standards. Trust me the last think you want is to be 200 plus feet down and have a pipe snap.
Well the used SHIT it’s very cheap around here. You can get new reject here for not much more and is a whole lot easier to work.
George Owen I don’t want to be a know it all but this pipe is not drill stem!! I’ve been around water well drilling most of my life and drill stem is extremely heavy walled pipe!!👍
Guys he’s prolly not taking about the price of the pipe,the type of fence and the amount of work put into it is what would make this job an expensive one

1] What is the Machete/Big Knife for --- sticking under the right side of the SAE-300 red face welder top cover?
2] Is there a Fixed Jaw MISSING on the Combination Vise at the right rear corner of the truck bed?

You make it look easy.
With this type of build you can make a flex joint in every 50,100 or 1000 feet what ever you need by just welding one end of your runner it allows the metal to expand or shrink as it needs also fantastic for undeveloped terrain. Also use 4 inch square tubing for uprights turned so the pipe runners go in at corners and this is even better than pipe on pipe.
