For ‘The Condor Passage’, you didn’t mention that the moment at 19:11 is a motif from ‘Fort Condor’ from the original game; 51 seconds into that track.
Was gonna comment this haha, it took me a few minutes on my first playthrough to realize why this melody sounded so familiar! Such a clever arrangement.
Lol, "Team Barret's theme" represent! 🎼 When you show the notes on screen like that I can see why you're so adamant about it. 🎶 It's very compelling. It just doesn't make sense to me why it would be there, but it makes all the sense in the world that Barret's theme would play there. 🎵 Loving the series, and I hope we some day get a definitive answer!
The narrative weakness of my argument is extremely damning 🙇♂️ Maybe I will be redeemed in Remake Part 3, when Tseng dramatically shows up surfing on the back of a Whisper. 🏄♂️🏄♂️
it's such a distinct vibe compared to just about every other version of the chocobo theme! (the minor key arrangement of the chocobo theme from FF Type-0 also comes to mind as pretty novel -- iirc it was the world map theme or something lol)
Halfway through the video I found that I never considered the harsh tonal difference between the destruction visible in the Junon area and the music, because I was too busy vibing to my new favorite priate song! But jokes aside, to me the Junon field theme felt perfectly on point. There's the (not too subtle) nod to the old republic's naval past mixed with the military might of the fortress that Shinra has turned the city into. For me, the theme evoked the sense of what Junon was before Shinra and what it could be again, giving it its own very distinct identity. That in turn makes the more shinra-centered part later on in the Chapter feel even more jarring. But then again, maybe I'm just trying to justify why I like this theme so much :D Keep up the great work!
“…and what it could be again.” Well said! I was mostly focused on the past and present, I hadn’t really considered it as future aspirations as well. Good point. In the next episode I touch on the interesting contrast between this track and the Under Junon theme, and how complimentary they are to one another. Hoping that ep won’t be too far behind!
The GOAT music channel is back! The only RUclips channel that makes emphasis on the importance of seamless transition between music tracks and the logistical issue when composer works in their own bubble. And because of this channel, I learned the first time that Shotaro Shima is the GOAT.
Thank you for your effort in this series, man, yesterday I had a dream about a doctor in the college teaching us FF7 music. And he made s compassion between original FF7 and FF7R, I even remember he played The Airbuster ost, I can't wait for your next episode, Im sorry ic there is snubbing weird or wrong. My sight is so low.
I really made it into one of your videos with my theory!? Wow! Thanks Patrick! This series feels like we all work together on this project to unveil every nook and cranny of this beautiful OST. Also: SORRY, I try not to talk about videos we havent gotten to yet, but I have to make an exception this ONE time!: I am sure they will be amazing and I try to keep up the theory crafting when needed ;) Thanks again, it was an incredible honor! :)
bow wow WOW indeed! Alas, I'm currently in the middle of writing the Part 13 video, and logistically, I think I'm going to have to bump up the doggy musics to the start of Part 14... so you're going to have to wait a little bit longer for that one, sorry!
Yippeee!! Finally all caught up! Excited to finally get my hands on the game in a few days. I appreciate all your hard work analyzing this game’s soundtrack. Keep up the good work!!
I got randomly recommended this video and went back to binge the whole thing. This is amazing! A great way to reignite my passion for maybe my favorite soundtrack of all time. And the videos are so good! I'm excited to watch these as they come out from now on!
Thank you for another foray in Rebirth's music! I like a lot your thoughts about Junon's region theme and how it may reflect the population's revanchism or attachment to their Juneoian... Junoan... Junonian (?) identity. EDIT: I think the initial Junon region field theme at 5:17 is simply called "The Junon Region" and was released separately on the Vinyl soundtrack: ruclips.net/video/-XT3Gp7sLTo/видео.html Bummer about the concert you missed, I hope they'll be a tour for Part 3 for you to catch up :-)
Just love the content man, thank Shiva it got recommended to me about a month ago I truly hope it gets way more exposure. Such a joy to watch and so engaging when you got the quality of the soundtrack speak for itself, but you do this thing where you find yourself essentially solving mysteries on the who and why and the what now and either as a musician, music lover, or just a fan -it's a thrill to go on that ride..educational too, seeing how music theory gets applied, training your ear to pick out different instrumentation, learning of Shima's existence which is like an achievement in and of itself i think..speaking of, I know it's a hell of a long way away, but I can't wait for you to get to Demon Gates
Dunno why I felt like writing that in 3rd person like I'm objectively speaking for everyone but this is kind of my firm take after I binged the entire series haha hope you continue to grace us with your expertise and curiosity man truly
@patrickrainville Get out!! We were on the back balcony, but the sound was still amazing and we had a great view of the pianists hands during the concerto. What a concert. Small world. 😅
@@LiamBujold that's amazing. I was in the mezzanine so we were damn close. Hopefully you didn't hear me fumbling for a kleenex to keep the tears at bay during the X piano concerto 🥲 I was at the Saturday show, you?
@patrickrainville I was also at the Saturday show. 😅 It was amazing. When the pianist walked out and played without a single sheet of music my buddy and I couldn't believe it. Also. What a specific niche of a show. Fans of FF and super music geeks that want to hear FF music played as if it were somewhat traditionally symphonically composed and not just a orchestrated version of the songs in the games. But yeah. Crazy that we were at the same show. I'm from outta town, it just so happened it was playing the weekend I flew in.
Excellent video as always. If I may though, you seem to have completely missed out that "The Condor Passage" seems to be a full rendition of the Fort Condor theme. I don’t have the musical luggage to tell how but if you sing along the theme a bit faster you get it. It’d be interesting to deconstruct that track even if it’s very secondary, to me it’s one of the most subtle and impressive remix of the game. Also for the cherrypicking note: the first version of the Junon theme before you activate the towers is simply called "The Junon Region" and is on the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Vinyl. "Remnants of the Republic" is the official soundtrack version.
Thank you! Indeed, the Fort Condor passage(s) the went completely over my head. Will definitely be revisiting that track, likely in the next ep. And I didn’t realize the “Remnants of the Republic” subtitle was just for the second version - this goes well with something I wrote in the script for the next episode haha!
@@patrickrainville it seems they’re not very consistent with the tracks names. They gave two subtitles for the "With Heavy Heart" tracks (both on the deluxe mini soundtrack and the official soundtrack), but not here.
"Sorry, I try not to discuss future music, but I had to make an exception this ONE time." *proceeds to do it three more times* 😂😂😂 I wasn't able to read all the comments, so apologies if some of these have already been pointed out. 1. For the first theme of the chapter and "Mako Poisoning", that opening phrase is from "Trail of Blood", no? Uematsu isn't credited for "Mako Poisoning", but as you called out at the end of the video, that does happen on occasion. 2. The stripped back version of the Junon region theme is simply titled "The Junon Region", as confirmed on the Rebirth vinyl. 3. Is Gavin in the title of a couple of the themes a typo? And yeah, Hamauzu not being credited for that "Whispers' Theme" phrase (if that is indeed what it is) doesn't really prove much. We'll come across more Rebirth themes where Uematsu should have been credited but wasn't. Another great video! Can't wait for the next one.
Thank you! 1. Clearly evoking a similar feel to Trail of Blood, but the notes themselves are quite different. The lack of Uematsu credit in this case is correct, imho. 2. Right, this one was pointed out to me earlier. I'll point this out in the next ep. 3. Oops, my mistake! His name is Gavin ("Gabon") in the Japanese version so I think I was using the names interchangeably without realising it. Good catch!
Ooh, we're opening up the intro with my fav song from the chapter. My second favorite character in Rebirth is Roche. Beaten only by the absolute rejects you play Queens Blood against.
I feel so validated having seen Jack Sparrow pop up because all I could think about was Pirates of the Caribbean every time I was in Junon 😂 My running joke in my head while I played Rebirth was “Nomura loves Disney” because I kept making comparisons when I would get to new lands. Junon/Pirates, Cosmo Canyon/Toy Story Condors Passage has a bit of Lion King spirit haha
Wow, oops! Totally forgot that track existed in the live action. I meant the vibe of the original animated movie. What a coincidence/unintended reference 😂
"Dusk of an Old Era" - "The Condor's Talons" "Gavin's Ranch (Lethargic de Chocobo)" - "Run-Down Ranch" "The Condor Passage" - "Junon Heights - The Wainwright's Lookout" "Gavin's Ranch (Fortunes de Chocobo)" - "Reborn Ranch" "Babble at the Bigger Tease" - "Encounter on the Big Bridge" There's a passage in the Junon Heights theme that seems so reminiscent of Barret's Theme or Shinra's Full-Scale Assault, but I can't quite place it...
There is still very much a chance that I've misheard. It's not Fort Condor specifically, but I am sure I've heard it somewhere: whether in FFVII or not.
Nakamura is severely underrated. I think he has a lot of range, just listen to something like “No Escape” and the battle version of that “Fighting Spirit” from episode Yuffie.
