  • We thought it would be a good idea to do an armoured session at mid-day in July...

    Spear is so much fun, feels the most knightly to fence with

    I was a fan of spears, but I realized that they are weak against plate armor, a spear is very difficult to pierce even a good chain mail that will protect the gaps of the armor, I consider the crow's beak an absolute weapon, because it can simply knock out the enemy through protection, snatch or knock out weapons, pierce the gaps and make a Bonk. The spear is king, but not always and everywhere.

    Still going to chose poleaxe if I get isakei'd but I do love some spear fighting.

      @@SpearEnjoyer Hell yeah! I'd say take a look at Lorifactor's plaque belts but that's only if you want your bank account to suffer lol. If you know how to cast bronze and enamel stuff that might be the cheapest way!

      Lorifactor's belts are easily the best I've seen so far 😍 I think its one of those things where you've just got to bite the bullet and spend the money considering the belt's only purpose is to flex your wealth and status 😅Still half the price of a Gucci bag though, so that's how I justify it 😆

    First time seeing such use of a shield. Is it actually useful, doesnt it get in the way for arm movement and parries ?

    • @SpearEnjoyer
      @SpearEnjoyer  2 месяца назад +2

      Its something we've been testing out recently. The shield has a strap called a 'guige' which is pretty ubiquitous during this period in artwork and finds, similar to how almost every rifle is used with a sling in combat today.
      You know the shield is there while you are fencing, but it doesn't interfere enough to be a problem. In return you get a lot of protection to the left shoulder and armpit without having to even hold it, as well as the benefit of being able to grab the handle and actively cover yourself against arrow and lance strikes.

    What shaft diameter are you guys using and what tips? I want to get into spear sparring but don't want to hurt my partner as we're using standard HEMA jackets

    • @SpearEnjoyer
      @SpearEnjoyer  День назад

      We use 25-30mm ash for our spears, the important part is the rubber spear heads we use from capapie.co.uk
      You can see them in use in our other videos wearing hema jackets or even just regular clothing

    I was wondering what tipe of glove are you using, is it good protection?
    Im trying to see if there is something more flexible in the market but im probably end up getting the lobsters cause i need my hands intact 😅😂

    • @SpearEnjoyer
      @SpearEnjoyer  Месяц назад

      We use the red dragon gloves and they are perfectly protective for fencing with spears.
      We are however looking to upgrade to clamshell design gauntlets as we will be soon introducing more percussive weapons like poleaxes into our sparring and also enjoy functioning hands ;)

    pretty cool! how come not wearing proper plate helmets? also, the title says full plate armor but you only have partial plate on

    • @SpearEnjoyer
      @SpearEnjoyer  2 месяца назад +8

      Mostly because fighting on foot with a visor down sucks 😩😆 at 1:27 youll see me using the helmet with a clear perspex visor I made for it, but I wasn't able to breathe after 4 exchanges so it needs some modification. Using a mask with an overlay gives us a general representation of an open faced bascinet with aventail for training purposes, It's not perfect but does the job well enough.
      As for the term 'full plate' and 'partial plate', these are terms modern people use because we love to put things into categories, mostly thanks to DND. The armour in the video is a typical complete harness for war that would have been worn by both knights and men at arms at the end of the 14th century. Every limb is protected in steel plate as well as the chest and head. Remember that at this time, knights still predominantly fought on horseback, so the high saddle front would protect the stomach and groin which is only covered by mail.
      In later centuries this would become much more comprehensive, with a fauld extending down to cover the stomach and groin, and large pauldrons to protect the shoulder and replace the shield. Even then, there are examples of knights in the mid 15th century where every inch of their body is covered in plate, removing their shoulder defences to give better mobility for fighting on foot.
      All this to say, I think having 'full plate' in the title is a bit more click-friendly than 'late 14th century war harness' 😜
