Webcam Putting Setup Guide for GSPRO and Garmin R10

- This is a setup guide to get the putting app capturing a golf putt using a webcam and OpenCV Computer Vision running. The captured shot is posted to the Garmin R10 GSPRO connect software (initially created by travis lang) which was extended to pass it over to GSPRO Open API.
Goal is to have a solution fo Garmin R10 users to include putting in GSPRO as Garmin does not support putting and have said in the forums they will not be working on it.
In the video I still show the putting with the old e6 connector. I suggest to use the matth/mholow connector (e6 or bluetooth) and drop the putting folder in the same folder as the connector. For fine tuning the color detection follow roxor's video. All can be found as links in my github.

Tried this out in a demo environment and worked well once I figured out my issue. Fantastic work Alexander! Thanks for sharing! I was using the R10 via bluetooth direct to the PC and realized my firewall was still on ( usually disabled it when playing GSPro via tablet E6 connection ). Wasted almost an hour trying to debug. Was driving me nuts because I could see the readings. It just wasn't pushed to GSPro. After I realized my mistake I had great success. So wanted to note this here to help anyone else from making the same mistake. Ordered a long USB so I can try in my garage sim from the ceiling ( 30-45fps camera ). Great work. I will find a way to donate for your efforts. Great job, and look forward to any future updates : )
I use Ggspro & Garmin R10 with gsp-r10-adapter-v2.1.1 (mholow)
which add on do i have to install now so that i can use the putting function with a webcam or is there the gsp-r10-adapter v2.1.1 modified which has the putting function included?

I'm following this project closely and it looks great. Any plans to port this into Mevo+ connect for GSPro since Mevo+ also struggles with putting?
No plans for this really. I believe somebody tried to run it in parallel to Mevo+ but I think the gspro open api only takes 1 input at a time.

Alex. The set up seems to be working. When I run the test the system is reading the putts but when I pull up GSpro the putts are not bridging over to GSPro so GSpro is not reading the putts. Any idea what the issue could be? Thanks in advance.
In GSPRO the club needs to be PT. Sometimes in putting greens it does not automatically select it and you have to manually switch the club. This is true for both my connector as well as matth connector. If this is not the issue, please join the sgt/gs pro dicord and post your issue in the r10 channel.
Hi, I really like your software. I am having trouble getting it to register a putt more than 7 mph. Is this due to a camera that has 30 fps or is it related to a slow computer? I also have an issue with it crashing when it starts within GSpro. I am using a laptop with 32G of Ram, a Ryzen 7 processor, and a Radeon Vega graphics card.

Changing webcam index does nothing. No camera could be opened. No option settings. Webcam works perfectly on system camera.
Please post your issue in the sgt discord r10 channel. Many people who can help there. Might be that your are changing the webcam index in the connector and are then starting the putting app standalone. this will not work as it is passed as argument from the connector. Standalone it always defaults to 0 or uses the arguments from the command line as described in the readme.
Im trying to setup putting uning your webcam putting ( BIG THANKS FROM EVERYONE BTW) on my setup by placing the webcam on the ceiling above my mat ( about 9 feet up) 1) is this possible? and 2) if it is possible do i need to have the camera with zoom to zoom right in on the mat. I haven't had any luck getting it to work with gspro. I can get it to launch when putting, and to see the radius of the ball, but the shot itself doesn't seem to actually register. I don't mind ordering a better webcam with a zoom feature or higher fps if it will work with a setup like mine, but wanted to check if it actually will work from above
how do i get the camera working first of all?

Probably the cam only supports compressed video formats. Currently only uncompressed is supported but I am looking into it.
Can you port this app to use camera to put with FlightScope Xi+?
Whoever has access to the connector for the Xi+ for any golf simulator software could integrate the putting app. Nothing to be done on the putting app itself, it can just be integrated. It is currently used for R10 and also MLM2Pro for GSPRO.
Any tips on calibrating the speed of the ball ? I putt hard but it seems that it goes not as far as it should be in GSPRO. THanks for the hard work !
Check first that the ball is detected clearly by viewing the "mask" window in debug (hit d) mode. Adjust the slides to get the color seperation right. Once you have only your golf ball as white you can manually dial in the radius to get the speed correct. Smaller radius is faster ball speed. Always check that you get > 20 FPS for consistent ball readings. Good readings above 8 MPH should have > 40 FPS from my experience and therefore require 60 FPS cameras.

@@luxeomni Yes, afterwards you can fix the radius at the same number and test with having it +/- 1 if it fits better for your setup.

Such a great video and software, thank you very much! This has been a game changer for me and have enjoyed playing courses on GSPro sooo much more! With my webcam I am able to get accurate puts that are going over 100 feet. Thank you!

CANNOT get this to work. I have downloaded 1.6 and 1.7. Putting never shows up inr10 connect screen as yours shows. You say it’s bundled together with it. Mine is. It. And now when I try to set up camera the balltracking.exe page says replay cam not activated?? It’s clearly on and rectangle st
Replaycam is an additional camera which is connected to record the swing. Not needed by most people and can be ignored. In the video I stil show the putting with the old e6 connector. I am helping my father set up this system. He is playing gspro with Garmin r10, bet lacks pitting.
I followed all of your instructions and read them through, but i cant get the putt to appear on gspro.
R10 Connect sees the putt via webcam but the putt never reaches gspro.
I have ran out of options to try.

Thanks Alexx for the putting add on. It’s working great. I have two cameras one for discord one for putting. If both are connected the putting add on always picks the discord camera. Thus I have to physically disconnect the discord camera, load the add on & and then reconnect discord camera. My question is- is there a way to prioritise which camera is used by your putting add on. Thanks.
Hi. With the camera index in the settings.json you choose which camera is taken. If you have always set this to 0 then you should try setting it to 1 to see if it picks up the other camera.
I recently got GS pro with the R10. Not very tech savvy. But I was wondering if you ever added your putting app/software to the bluetooth direct to PC connector ? I can't seem to get consistent connection through Trevor's connector to E6 and would like to use the bluetooth direct to PC connector and your putting app together. Saw the Roxor video but his settings.json file looks very different than mine in that he has some lines of code for the putter which I don't have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You will have to get the latest bluetooth connector from the releases. It has the putting integration.
Hi, this is great. I purchased a new webcam and connected my laptop. It looks it doesn't recognize USB connected webcam even if built-in webcam was disabled. Is there any way to have my laptop recognize USB webcam?
If windows is recognizing the webcam it should be fine for putting. Do you see it in the drop-down menu of webcam index?
Hi Alex, I just setup my putting on gspro thanks to your video, but I didn’t catch how or what software you use to get the window to pop back on when on the green. Could you share that if possible. Thanks
It is ontopreplica, if you use the bluetooth direct connect solution from mholow this is not needed as it is build in.
I have a question. Every time I reach green it opens double cameras. Do you think its ok to delete the Windows camera app and just keep Logitecs app?
I am not sure what you mean in detail. I would suggest to ask the question on the gspro/sgt discord in the r10 channel. Chances are someone is using the same camera and can help you out.

I’m having trouble making it work consistently. It may read one or two putts but then won’t read anything after that. The ones that it did read went 30 feet in the game but 4 feet on the floor. Do you have any suggestions to try. Thank you
Check the troubleshooting section. Sound like your lighting and camera settings need more tweaking. github.com/alleexx/cam-putting-py#some-troubleshooting-steps-if-you-can-not-get-it-to-work . Hope this helps. On the GSPRO discord there are also a lot of people willing to help and sharing their settings.

I have a 60 fps camera but stops at just over 30 fps. Do you know how I can get it higher?
For some cameras the advertised higher fps is only supported in certain resolutions. Check for example kinovea to find a working resolution at 60 fps and set this manually in the config.ini for width height and fps settings.
Would this work for other LM's or just R10 atm?

No it only works for gspro. If somebody makes a connector for any other sim the putting app could be integrated easily.
I have another question: Is it possible to flip the entire orientation and not just the image? As a right handed golfer, it would be a LOT more intuitive putting from right to left across the screen.

Hi. Is it possible to flip the direction of the putting setup, going from right to left. I know this has been asked before, but i can not figure it out.
There is a flip setting when you hit "a" for advanced settings in the putting window. It will flip the webcam video input. There has also been the request to flip just the output video image but that one is still on the list if I have time as it is only cosmetics.

Very nice Alex, much appreciated! I have a small request when it comes to Window location of the detection area. Would it be possible to lower it on the Y axis? After every hole, it resets its position to 0:0 in the top left corner and it's hidding the player's name. I may try to OnTopReplica distro though to see if this fix it.. by i'm thinking a simple change in the python code would do as well. Thanks again! (I am using v1.6 of the cam-putting-py)
If you move the window once and quit out of it using "q" it will remember where you positioned it. For the resizing you can set the resize parameter in pixel width in the connectors settings.json. Original is 640 px width. Default from matth is set to 320.

Hi absolut great what people can develop 👍. Do you have plans to use the web cam as well, to show where the ball hits the club, like Mevo + or the new MLM 2 ? Shot Vision and Impact Vision for multi-option swing replay.
Yes, have some initial prototyping on this but it will be difficult to make it consistent with different cameras. Nothing to be released shortly.

Hi, forgive me if I missed something, but can the r10 be connected as well as the putting simulator at the same time so it can be used while playing a round?
Yes the connect app is originally for the R10 and does handle this in parallel. It will only take the putting simulator data if PT club is selected in GSPRO (default club automatically on the green). The R10 data is forwarded if it is send by the garmin app. You can play a full round with this.
Where can I find the Discord group to get help with setup? When opening put window, I get a message about webcam index and some other text info which cannot be read because it continues outside of putting window. Thanks

Hi mate. Absolutely brilliant piece of software. It’s transformed my setup.
Is there a way of getting it to start when a LW is selected on GSPro as well as the PT? There are sometimes a few shots round the green that i prefer to use a putter on. Also GSPro’s default club on the Practice course is a LW despite being on the green. It means you need to change clubs every hole. Is there s as setting that cam be altered? Cheers
This is controlled by the connector not the putting app. You can request a flag from matth to disable it if you are using his bluetooth connector. I actually like it being defaulted like this as we did not have this initially and it caused some ghost putts when walking through the putting area. LW being set by GSPRO on the practice green was already adressed by me and a fix should be on the way.
Thanks Alexx. The LW around the greens isn’t much of a problem as it’s quite rare but the default on the practice greens was doing my head in. Hope it’s fixed soon and I’ll have a look so Matts connector which I’m using. Cheers.
Can this be used at same time as the new Direct Bluetooth PC connector?
I have not tested it but I believe GSPRO only allows 1 OpenApi Connect at a time. The developer of the bluetooth connector however is working on integrating my putting app to get this running.
I have it working but I have a question. I'm a lefty, any way I turn the camera seems wrong. Am I setting up incorrectly?

Next version will allow the picture to be flipped in order to use it easily for lefties. Currently you have to mount it on top to look down, have it next to you or use the webcam software to flip the image. Is this what you did?
I turned the camera and have the wires closest to me. I thought I had tried it first time but I guess not.

No, you can only connect one connector at a time to gspro open api. Both matth bluetooth connector and my connector work with putting so this should not be an issue. In matth connector you just have to manually adjust the settings.json and add the ball_tracking folder to his connector.

Hi. How high above the ball does the webcam need to be and how much distance do you need for the put. I'm trying to figure out how to set this up and mat need to find a tripod for the webcam
Mine is about 4 feet up and I have about 4 to 5 feet in view.
This is such an ingenious use of off the shelf hardware and open computer vision models. Alex, bravo. Software devs FTW
Is the setup the same on the newest version?
Yes it is the same but some settings were added which can be found on the github. If you need more help join the r10 channel on gspro/sgt discord where a lot of putting setups are being discussed.

It is described by matth. You will need to enable it in the settings.json. If you are not sure about the settings for webcam index and color name it is good to use my connector first to get the correct setup and then switch to matth. github.com/mholow/gsp-r10-adapter#using-the-putting-integration

Are we able to set the camera from behind to accommodate left and right handed hitters???
No, you will need to set it up on the side or you can also mount it at the ceiling. It basically needs a side or top view of the ball.

. Hi, great content. I setup the same way you have off to the side but would like to mount to the ceiling above the hitting area. A couple of questions. Do I need a web came that zooms in? Is there a setting in the connector to zoom? I seen the option but it is grayed out and cannot select. Do I need to zoom the camera at all?

Should work in latest version. Make sure to extract the whole zip onto your hard drive.

Great work Alex. Just have bought a R10 and subscribed GS Pro. Your work makes the game much much more enjoyable than the auto-put feature built in. The only one thing I am yet used to is placing the ball back to the yellow box because it's on the left side of the screen (window) and the ball moving direction on the screen is opposite to what I am actually doing. I understand the orientation of image in the screen is correct/original (not mirrored/rotated). To overcome this issue, I marked a black dot on the putting mat (I am using white ball) which indicate the center of the yellow box. I just put the ball back to the black dot every time and look at the screen to confirmed it was detected and ready for next put. This method can get around the issue quite well for now but a flip/mirrored screen would be even better. Thanks again for your great work and looking forward to....
With the latest releases you can actually flip the view. It looks a bit strange as it is not original anymore but does work.

@@AlexanderSchonefeld Thanks a lot Alex. It works very well for me. I do not have a permanent/separate area for my golf sim and have to setup every time to play. The new app helps me set up the putting strip much more easy as the flip view match the actual putting direction.
Does webcam quality make a big difference? Would a $20-30 camera work as effectively as a $100+ model; provided the frame-rate was high enough?
Higher shutter speed and higher fps will make a difference from my point of view as it will detect more clear images of the ball in motion and therefore give better detection of correct speed. People are having good results also with using phones as webcam through 3rd party software like ivcam and droidcam as most phones are able to produce a good video stream at 60 fps and even allow for zoom. Also there is good progress on using IR cameras with higher FPS. You can follow these discussions on GSPRO discord in the R10 channel if you want to. I am quite happy with my 30 fps HD camera in the setup but thinking about getting a high FPS camera. Mainly also to investigate further if I can read also the clubpath and faceangle to make it more usable as a practice tool.
I hooked up a 60 fps webcam. It recognizes the ball quickly and reading putts well. Getting putts to go over 70 feet. I wish I had a radar gun so I knew exactly how fast my putts are. I've set my radius to 18.

OK. Thanks. Could you please check the FPS count on the screen. Other users have reported that the StreamCam only runs on 30 FPS which would make sense to me as the StreamCam specs refer to uncompressed 30 FPS and compressed 60 FPS. At the moment the app defaults to the uncompressed setting I believe. I am checking if this can be changed.

No this only integrates with GSPRO. As Garmin integrates directly with TGC2019 via the simlink app this would only work if I could also send the data directly to simlink app or TGC2019. I do not have any information on how to do so and do not think it is easily done.

Hi Alex, this is a great way for R10 users to have the full golf experience.
@JLagGOLF has a video out which pairs the R10 directly to the GSPRO app on the computer without using E6 or the garmin app.
It is very stable and provides ball flight in half the time.
if this could be incorporated, it would allow a full GSPRO experience for the folks on a budget.

Now we just need this to work with the direct connection so we don't have to use our phones.

It is already integrated in latest beta release of the bluetooth connector. You can try it out. You need to download latest beta from matth. Then you download latest from github.com/alleexx/cam-putting-py and just unpack the ball_tracking as a folder into the matth conector. Activate putting in the settings.json and you should be good to go.
That is just amazing how you have done this. Recently it has become possible to connect the R10 to a PC directly without going through E6 on the R10 Connector app. Do you think it will ever be possible to use your putting app without it bundled into the R10 connect app? Also, how far away from the putting area can the webcam be and still give accurate putting speed and direction?
It is already integrated in the latest version. You just have to enable it. There are people who have ceiling mounted their webcam and have good reads. For distance to the side I have mine about 2 feet away but did not test it further yet. The further away it will be might affect the accuracy of the putt direction. You should make sure to set it up a bit in front of the start position to have same distance to the ball for all detection points.

No quite happy with r10. Would rather upgrade to eye mini or similar at some point in the future.
@@AlexanderSchonefeld For some reason I cannot get data from the Garmin in GSPro when the R10 connect app with the putting simulator is open, even though it looks like the R10 is directly connected to the PC. The the R10 connect app is not open I can get data from the Garmin in GS Pro. You mention that it just has to be enabled but can you tell me what the process for enabling it is please? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
@@John-ei5uz you have to get the putting app version without the connector. Just get the latest release here github.com/alleexx/cam-putting-py and have the ball_tracking folder in the matth folder. Then enable putting in matth settings.json and set the webcam index and ball color also there. Putting app is then started if PT is selected as Club in gspro. If you have made advanced settings for putting you need to set those again.
Do you need a 4K webcam or will 1080p work?
1080p is fine. 60 fps helps to get more accurate reading on longer putts.
