This episode was a victim of overhype, if everyone just let it play out naturally this would've been way more hype honestly.
You can't really build up hype when we all know about it and also get spoiled 😂. No one other than the hardcore op fans were hyped.

Zoros ep 10/10 and this 7/10.

The repeated copy and paste scenes of Luffy bouncing around plus the long ass orichi scene killed some of the hype for me. I was expecting to see a lot more fighting but the pacing was terrible. When Luffy deflected Kaidos blast I’m ngl I had no idea wtf was going on. I hope they do better next episode I just want to see straight hands no interruptions.

One piece fans need to stop comparing it to dragon ball and Naruto. Those two shows were much more influential at their time and built hype better, so they will have an easier time breaking the internet than an anime with people still catching up to it. In my opinion, everyone should just focus on enjoying the masterpiece rather than comparing it out of spite.

All types of build up, foreshadowing and all, only for the transformation to perfect fit Luffy's character. Seriously, I don't care what anyone says about the episode. It might not be the best overall cuz of pacing, repetition, and some flashback.
But for me, all of Luffy's scenes left me in disbelief. The way they combine the classic and modern animation is just so amazing and refreshing to see.
The joy I felt watching this episode was just through the roof. Best thing? It's just the beginning and 1072 will surely top everything.

The problem with gear 5 comes from the one piece fans constantly comparing it to ssj or ui goku when it hadn't even come out yet. And the crashing of anime sites just feels so forced, it doesn't just feel as real because of how the one piece community setting unrealistic expectations. Now that it has finally come out it didn't even trend as close to ui goku or ssj

Definitely an intro to Gear 5. The action was great, but need more. And I know we will get it in 1072+. The toon force and sound effects were amazing. My main issues were the typical OP issues. They repeated Luffy spinning on the ground 3 times, and the flash back with CP0 for another time even after the flash back in 1070, and it just happened in 1069. And then yes, the princess speech was too long. Excited for 1072+

"Gear 5 broke the internet" is the biggest cope OP fans has been saying all weekend long. "Breaking" crunchyroll nor getting a few 100k tweets and hashtags on X doenst mean breaking the internet.
Just gotta admit, the gear 5 episode was terribly executed. Like why did the Hiyori scene had to be in this episode, it could have been easily moved to the next episode. The reason why UI Goku, SSJ Goku, Baryon Naruto and Final Zangetsu were so effective were because when they were revealed (to one pieces benefit they also did this last episode) that ended in a cliff hanger. Then the following episode was dedicated to the new powerup and cooking the antagonist. OP 1071 could have dedicated an entire episode for Gear 5, have it end where luffy becomes gigantic, then insert the Hiyori shit next episode. Could have made for a better pacing.

I really think the comparison to SSJ is pointless. They have different backgrounds and contexts.
I like Gear5 because it changes his fighting style. And I like SSJ because it is simply cool.
I also don't understand the meaning of "iconic".
There are anime that were powered up with aura before SSJ, even just the ones I know of, Mazinger Z and Layzner. Gear5 is Looney Tunes and I feel it references from SSJ as well.
We all need to respect predecessors.

I think when ever they hype a transformation it will not meet there expectations that why dbz transformation are best because nobody knows when new transformation is coming it will sudden that why those forms are goated
I think it was more hype for me when it released in the manga compared to the recent anime release. Reason for that is probably because of people over hyping it, but also i felt like they were over doing it with the sound effects in the episode.

One piece fans on Twitter have been posting “Gear 5 > all of fiction” every hour for months, that’s probably why so many people wanna hate Gear 5 now that it’s here
One Piece fans who compare Gear 5 to Ultra Instinct should remember that the Mastered Ultra Instinct in DBS Episode 129 was screened at public in the Latin America countries. The following episodes 130 and 131 had even more hype than any anime ever did period. Even Embassy of Japan had to sent a notice to Mexico Governor to stop the screening of DBS last 2 episodes.
If y'all disagree then watch some public reactions of those episodes, you will get a reality check that One Piece is only popular among One Piece fans and not outside of it.
Just be happy that after 1071 episodes, weeks of hyping from Manga readers and Toei you guys finally managed to crash the terrible Cruncyroll and Pirate servers which DBS did on 8th Oct 2017 without any hype on tweeter except that one panel that Toei released months before.

I was honestly really disappointed with this episode. I didn't really like the reused animation + flashbacks then how Hiyori took up half the episode. Then on top of that, the hype G5 received for the past year really had my expectations high for this episode just to get like 2 mins of Luffy vs Kaido. Before anyone says it, yes I am aware 1044 had only a few pages of G5 being shown but because of the hype for the past year I just expected more...at least 5-7 mins at least...
I honestly feel like they should of either made this a full G5 ep or have the Hiyori stuff be first (instead of the middle of the ep) which is then followed by all of the G5 stuff. This way it wouldn't have intruded on the moment while also being paced a bit better at least to me. Hope the next episode is much better.

In terms of impact, I don't think gear 5 is on par with ssj. I think it does rival ultra instinct. What sets ssj apart from those two in my opinion, is the circumstances surrounding it. Ssj came out before the internet and social media took off like it has now. Back then, you didn't know ssj was coming. With gear 5, its being hyped up and showcased even before the episode comes out so you see it coming. No transformation is gonna surpass ssj like that and they don't need to. Also, ssj is also kinda the first series to do transformations in a shounen battle series

the anime isn't for everyone then, like this guy said unadulterated freedom. The animation change was perfect, the transformation with the drums of liberation. I doubt you watched the thing properly or something, he's still made out of rubber like the gorosei said. His gears were like zoan transformations to us and gear 5 is I guess his awakening. For me the seriousness didn't go away since everyone else is serious except Luffy like how it should be, Kaidou and the samurai.

It was a symbol of manga, nothing ever changed its just your taste is in serious badass scenes, though even gear 5 was badass for me. At the end of the idgaf if people think it was less than SSJ or UI or whatever so as long as it fulfilled my expectations and the satisfaction I required, I'm happy.

Gear 5 luffy is one of the coolest transformations in terms of its concept (freedom) but its not toon force, if anything it only shows very low level's of toon force that being matter manipulation (his rubberization ability)
Gear 5 the form itself was epic.
The execution of it was a bit messy(especially because of that Orochi sidequest) but still good enough.
Imo I think that it is just below the reveal of Baryon Mode, which still makes it awesome

It was an ep that reminded me that direction is more important than the fight for One Piece. I mean the peak scene of wano anime is still ep1015.
As for ep1071, I was hoping for a direction of the entrance and introduction scene, but that was better in the manga.

The pacing in One Piece is literally the worst part of the anime, which is unfortunate. If they adapted the series in seasons instead of weekly, they would have much better pacing and much better animation too (but Wano has upped the animation). Unfortunately that is never happening because OP is just too much of a cash cow for them to do that

It is over hyped ppl going into it thought too much gear 5 is okay but I don't know how it will sit within the whole anime community not just one piece fans also crunchy roll wasn't down for me I watched the episode no buffering or anything so it didn't crash so much like one piece fans think to my knowledge it was more better near the end of episode where we saw Luffy fight kaido properly I hope they fix this problem next episode tho but as I will say as in terms of popularity gear 5 won't be as popular as ultra instinct final tensho and Baryon mode especially Baryon mode because it had an emotional impact of kuramas death not taking anything away from Luffy tho

Of course, he's never done it, but he has like 5 statements from different sources saying he can. Luffy isn't a planet buster, but his ap is above planet level for sure. This means he can hurt someone with planetary durability while not being that destructive.

In one panel it's shown that there are around 100 sizes around the size of Alabasta if not bigger on the path to Saobody alone and it wasn't even the whole red line. Keep in mind that Alabasta is only a country in One Piece and there are two characters who are atleast weaker than Dressrosa Gear 4 Luffy who can split a continent that should be many times bigger than Alabasta which I already established is around the size of Antartica. Marco, a guy who studies maps stated that there are 10-20 million islands in the world. Even if we downplay and say only 0.1% of the islands in one piece are the size of alabasta or bigger, that's still 1000 islands around the size of Antartica. I haven't even brought up the distance between islands either. According to Viola's devil fruit, even within a 4000km radius, there are no islands around Dressrosa. This likely isn't the case for all islands but it should be noted that even at the highest point, no island has ever been seen from another due to how far apart they are.
Now for your whitebeard argument. Let m go over why the idea that they don't know how a planet buster would be. First of all, one of those sources is the manga, and the anime that is an adaptation of the manga. Both have Sengoku and Tsuru(two people from Whitebeards Era), saying Whitebeard has the power to destroy the world. Tsuru even confirms that fleeing to the other side of the world wouldn't save her from Whitebeards power. The Ace Novel has the narrator stating that Whitebeard used a fraction of the power to destroy the world. A databook says it, and so does Road to Laughtel which are both good sources. Where's the proof that Kishimoto knows the amount of force needed to destroy a planet? Even if he didn't know, One Piece is a fictional story and it's Oda's intention for Whitebeard to have the power to destroy the world.

Listen, i love one piece, especially the hype, but in terms of hype in 1071, the hype totally surpassed the roof, but unfortunately i had big hopes in this episode because i thought of it being all action from the beginning to the end, but instead we got way too many wasted frames on luffy just jumping and laughing, the second half of the episode was the only one fun, and that's why alot was disappointed espically after people overhyping this episode

Here's my thoughts on this: No, Gear Five did not break the internet. What broke the internet was the hype fans of the manga brought up causing the more casual fans to tune in for the episode. It was the curiosity over what everybody was talking about rather than direct anticipation for the specific transformation. We'll see how it goes moving forward and how hyped people stay about Gear Five in further episodes, and whether or not One Piece keeps the heightened view count, to see if the transformation itself actually resonated with the wider audience.
As for the power level here... I'd easily give Luffy a leg up on a lot of characters thanks to the way Gear Five seems to bypass the inherent strength of other characters with the 'Toon Force' aspect. However, it doesn't really make a difference when you get to discussions like Bleach and DBZ/DBS where sheer power can overcome hax. Luffy might hang with a few characters from those series he couldn't before, but it's not like he's suddenly able to beat Ichigo or Goku.

I might be wrong but i think Toei did the same thing with UI. Hyped up ultra instinct, then revealed it in one episode followed up by showing the actual fight a week later. I enjoyed the introduction to gear 5 but i do think they overdid it with using the same scene 3 times
I feel like the only people truly disappointed in 1071 were those who haven't watched the rest of the series and aren't truly fans of the series, but rather just RUclips clout chasers who thought they were getting a quick transformation and a fight finale that was going to be like Zoro v King. And were disappointed when they didn't get that and it was just a transformation, introduction to Gear 5, a tiny sneak peak at the fight and the lore dump and storytelling (Hiyori Scene). I don't see reactors who have watched/read the entire series being disappointed in this, I just dont... I just see randoms in the comments and facebook keyboard warriors trying to down play the greatness that was 1071. Like if you're a real OP fan, you love to see the lore dump about Luffy's fruit... True OP fans love that kind of content from the series. You love to see the parallel being drawn between Hiyori killng Orochi and effectively freeing her people from his tyranny and Luffy transforming into the living embodiment of Liberation and Freedom. The Voice acting was peak, the animation was peak (albeit they overused that one animation of luffy jumping around), the impact frames were dummy, the episode stayed very true to the manga... I don't think actual OP fans were disappointed by this episode at all, I know I was hype the entire time and laughing my ass off in pure joy.

This episode met my expectations and I was not dissapointed in the slightest. I have read the manga and I knew what to expect to go down in the episode so I fully saw Hiyori's screentime coming. People who have read the manga should have similar expectation and anime only watchers shouldnt set the bar so high not even knowing whats coming next and knowing that the pacing sucks and there will be a build up.
I've been following OnePiece for atleast 7 years and I honestly think the reason I stiff Read/keep up with the animanga is because of how much time I've put into it. Op is overrated. It's mediocre with the exception of world building and a large part of that is thanks to its length.
OP's arcs are formulaic. Fights are horrible. I don't find the characters great: I need more than over exaggerated tragic backstories, a faugh and some gags!
I liked Op during pre timeskip, but I don't care much for it anymore and keep up with the manga mainly because of the time I've invested.
Don't get me wrong though, I fove how intricate the story is and can't wait to see how he wraps everything up with the One Piece, Marygeois, and Imu sama. But I don't think it deserves the hype it gets !!!!
People don’t understand that the hype surrounding gear 5 luffy was in the transformation it may be hard for some of you guys to believe but deep down in your hearts you understand that the introduction would be what would make it or break it anime wise and it did the latter. As a one piece fan what made gear 5 so good was connecting and corroborating all the piece of the mysteries of the world of one piece and gear 5 put us one step forward to discover the mysteries of the void century and the gum gum fruit true origin and power. which was what I was more hype abt and why I was so happy seeing it in the manga. Sure luffy fighting with it was pretty hype since he got to get his gets backs on kaido for what he did to the land of wano and Odin. However, “Odin wouldn’t be Odin if it wasn’t boiled” (I love saying this line).
I already knew going into this gear 5 wouldn’t meet my expectations, how could it imo id say gear 5 was 60% transformation and 30% seeing it fight and 10% everyone’s reaction to it (his crew/samurai and the beast pirates). That’s what made people love it. This is just my take however I feel that this is somewhat the truth.
Just think abt it. Last year waking up to see chapter 1044 in the early morning of June. Previously You’ve see that luffy ‘s been knocked out cause a CP0 agent interrupted the fight. Kaido getting mad decides kills the CP0 agent before heading down to finish off the remaining samurai. Just then you see zushia talking to momo. Saying how it’s been centuries since he’s seen this. Momo starts questioning what zushias talking abt so are we just then luffy’s heart starts beating and as this is happening zushia continues to gas momo up as well as us the readers his words abt joy boy is hyping us up. It’s talking abt the drums of liberation. You then begin to visualize how they could possibly sounded like and you out start thinking of things that relate to freedom and stuff. Luffy’s hair begins to change color as he’s twitching his hand. You heart begins to beat even more you then wonder how a piece of fiction can have you feeling this emotional and excited at the same time. Luffy begins to get back up as clouds form around his body. Zushia finishes up the scene with more lore abt the void century. As we get iconic panel of luffy laughing with his hands covering his eyes.
This in essence is what gives gear 5 hype. While in a rushed i retold the introduction of gear 5 and allowed you to think and remember and relive reading it for the first time. and with that I some what proved how it was the introduction that made gear 5 great and that the fighting was just a bonus really.
P.S I think the manga did it better granted it came out of nowhere we’re as manga readers who watched episode 1071 already knew what was gonna happen so they weren’t as excited compared to see for the first time. I myself am one of those people.
Next episode isn’t really going to fix people’s disappointment unless the change the animation to be more serious nobody gives an f abt it needing to be cartoonish or goofy cause it’s gear 5

As manga reader I was overjoyed when this ep came out and I loved it. 9/10, I understand the filler and reused clips were a flaw but Ik why they did it. The animation during the short fight was fast but smooth. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster while watching it.

Nah l strongly disagree with your view the animation was good but the directing was not good, the drums of liberation mentioned in the manga was not translated well with the weak music they used. It did not give goosebumps it had repetitive animations like 4 times. Rewatch Gear 4 snake man in whole cake island it was straight to the point when the showed the form.

Another metric for popularity in the coming 6 weeks will be AMVs. Will those pop off after the fact is another metric of popularity. For instance, Baryon Mode AMVs are cracking millions of views in short time frames.
People still talking about it almost 2 years off now. And Naruto isn't even in the manga or relevant to Boruto anymore. He's been gone from the story for a year now. People want to know what matchups Baryon mode will win 2 years later. How strong is it really 2 years later. You can make a subject matter video around Baryon Mode and still get 100k+ views despite channel size.
G5 doesn't even get notable publications for some reason. Where's the list everybody throws out when a character gets a new form? None of that is happening either.
Personal opinion this animation was very good but I so happy they prove Luffy wasn't this universal level character I really had people telling me Luffy had this unstoppable power I definitely believe Luffy is strong but compare to shanks, Roger and whitebeard he isn't on that level

People should understand this, just because you don't like how it was animated does not mean the animation is bad. There's a difference between not liking an animation style and not liking an animation in general. In this case 1071(now 1072 as well), both were animated beautifully and not a single anime fan can deny that fact unless you're just hating. If they didn't like the animation, then they just don't like the style of the way it was animated but still need to admit it was well animated.

I honestly gave it a 7or8/10 because of the reuse of clips… but after seeing the little nuances the guying pausing the frames showed, upping it to 8ir9/10… easy.
Honestly I did NOT hate the Hiyori scene being in there… I thought Oda putting there specifically was for a reason, and although I’m sure the fans just wanted ‘MORE FIGHT! MORE MUSCLE! MORE MONKEY!’ The fact that those moments are happening simultaneously will play a much bigger significance in hindsight. Drums of liberation happen as she calls out Orochi for all he stole, captured, claimed, and squandered and now it is being liberated as he is then ended by his own spy on his own stage.
After rewatching and thinking more I give it 10or11orbigillion/10 cuz Oda is a genius, and it keeps getting better. (Though please just don’t show me that same clip of Luffy bouncing about his powers in the actual episode… recap of previous episode even would be better without but that’s almost certainly going to be in there)
