I've decided to try upgrading one of Squier's least expensive models, a 2002 Affinity Bullet Strat. I will treat this one to as many upgrades as I can… just see the list below. Exactly how far can we go? I know… plywood body, 40mm nut, toploader bridge, single humbucker route… not a great base. Time will tell. This is a multi-episode project, and I hope you enjoy following along.

I've used many materials from brass to graphite to bone to aluminum to plexiglass, and bone is just hands down the absolute winner to me. After I installed it on my LP hollow body clones, the difference was absolutely incredible. The material being so hard keeps more vibration in the string, and it's such a simple alteration for a major increase in performance. I'm the cliche metal shredder, sweeper and instrumentalist, and would promote it for any style and genre.

Never would have thought of aluminum. Agree on bone though!

Looking good. I tried SIT strings on a recommendation from a local music store. So far, I've been pleased with them.

Yeah I’m liking them so far. Good materials. Packaging isn’t the best but that gets thrown away anyway :)

Fender sells a bag of blanks for their stratocaster. It's just a matter of slotting and shaving down some. Nip the ends and away ya go. You can angle it too. I do mins different than most. My pinky is closer to the edge and the low E is further from the end. Makes fpr comfortable playing so you don't bend off the fretboard.

The E to E measurement… I didn’t cover that… but it’s pretty different on all the nuts I found with the slots started. First one from a total blank, so I’m happy to know I can do it.

@@hacksguitarhobby yeah, pretty difficult thing ti do though. Especially the sixe of your blank. My first was ok, second failed. Now, I buy them done, 😆 unless I'm doing like a size 8 or something strange like that.

I have the same Squire strat 20th anniversary and I really hated the small nut size so I replaced the neck with a Greg bennett Malibu neck and its waay better -it has Grover tuners and the guitar came with really good pick ups too -so its a keeper ! cant wait for the next Squire guitar upgrade vid..

Hi there. I've just bought a squier sonic for upgrades. I've been playing guitar for 20 years or so, I know how to do a basic setup, like truss rod adjustment, intonation, string height setup, but I never tried to file a nut, and I once did minor fret work on my bass. Now I'm going to try doing a fret level/crowning and nut replacement on the squier, I'm wondering how it will turn out. I've been working in the machine building industry for 13 years, I'm used to handling the file, sandpaper and so on, but never tried it on a guitar at an entire fret leveling scale. Your videos are inspirational and we noobs/semi noobs can use all the good advice you can share :) Thank you and keep up the good work, cheers!

Everyone was a noob once. I can remember the first time I filed a nut. It was before RUclips, but I researched it and it turned out great. I also remember the second time, because I filed too far and had to use super glue to build it back up. :) Then I eventually replaced it, and I learned a little more. Point being, I’ve learned more by fixing my own mistakes than by trying to be perfect the first time, so don’t be intimidated.

I tried SIT's back in the 80's. They seemed to not hold their tone very long, but things may have changed. I think the guitar itself has more to do with SIT issues.

Interesting, I hadn’t heard of them and had no idea they had been around that long.

@@hacksguitarhobby I live not very far from Akron. They never really promoted themselves and spread by word of mouth. And as I'd said, I haven't tried them since. Since the mid 80's I've used Dean Markley's, but they are hens' teeth now. They retained their tone longest, at least for me. Thanks for all of your valuable information videos.
