Morning routine: get up at 6, coffee, drawing warmup with Kayfabe on, make more comics.
Thanks for starting 2022 off right!

I think on that Byrne dead Phoenix cover, they guy in the corner box is supposed to be Dr McCoy from Star Trek. You can see the insignia on his shirt. "Jim" is Jim Shooter, but it is also what McCoy called Cpt. Kirk.

Been revisiting older Kayfabe plan on going over all of them. Even saw my old post from 2 years ago. Thank you for everything Jim and Ed. By the way do check out online the original Art Adams classic X-men #1 cover. The difference and improvement is what made that cover iconic.RIP Ed. Jim wishing you the best.

This was my first Artisan edition. Love looking over it. I just recently made some copies of this and got some black matted frames. I can switch them out periodically and I almost can’t help to always just stare at them.

"Larry Mundelo" is Kevin Nowlan. The name comes from Leave it to Beaver, one of Beav's friends.

The Defenders Mignola cover was inked by Kevin Nowlan. Loved the Gene Colan/Bill Everett combo, he did a beautiful job inking Colan.

Good stuff. That art looks amazing in this format. One small clarification. Marvel introduced their so called royalties program (in reality an incentives program) in late 1981/early 1982. Miller was still at Daredevil at that point and would remain so for another year. So he was collecting the bonuses. I think DC lured him not just with money but promise of better paper and creative control. Would be good to ask Miller but that's my hunch.

Nice shout out to the Frenz/Janson cover. He inked jrjr on 250 and Frenz on 251, maybe the best two illustrated Spider-Man issues I've seen.

Great variety of artwork by the iconic artists of the 70s and 80s. I like all these guys.

FYI @13:00 John Byrne drew Bones from Star Trek who's famously known for saying "He's dead, Jim."

Googled the Frenz cover homage and it turns out it's Thor v Juggernaut! Super badass looking!

Wow another beautiful book and another awesome clip! Would love to see JRJR on Daredevil run on here, he starts penciling on his own and Al Williamson on inks..my first issue was #251. Just had a flip thru..is there a parting shot to Jim Shooter on pages 1 and 2 there somewhere? Thanks guys keep up the great work.

to me, the word that describes JR's art is good old Norm Rockwell, Armour Hot Dog Eatin "Americana"

When I was going to conventions in the 80's, I would sometimes see fans who bought original art from a penciler or inker, then ask them to draw in whatever art or lettering was used for a color hold.

Regarding the John Byrne UXM#138 cover; I think he used hi-contrast transparency film and did multiple copies to get that 3rd gen dark version for the surprint. I would definitely watch a full video on Bill Sienkiewicz covers , so that gets a big upvote from me. This covers Artist edition is lacking on Perez and Bill S. work but other than that it was awesome. Thanks for the vid.

Super boggling . I'm going to have to seriously restrain myself from getting that beast.
The Romita cover to Tower of Shadows was done to replace the mindwarping cover that Steranko did, for some anal-retentive legibility concerns. But if you look the thing up, it's as clear and hard as diamond, just beautiful, proto-Sin City art, with Steranko's powerful logo design as well.

Great episode. I was planning on watching only a few minutes while I ate my breakfast, but the damn book is so compelling I watched the whole episode.
By the way, the first person I saw draw all the scales on the shoulders and chest of Captain America's costume was Kevin Maguire in The Adventures of Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty in '91. Captain America was one of my favorites growing up and that draw-every-scale approach looked so fucking cool to me. I wasn't the only one I guess.

I think Alan Davis was best suited for fantasy art and it was hard to read him as a superhero artist

Interesting to hear an opinion on Alan Davis (I’m a big fan). Would love to see you guys look at his work on Uncanny X-Men Annual 11, where Wolverine regenerates from a single cell.

47:25 WHAT! Kayfabers please fix this and send them some copies now! Darkest Spidey story ever. Even Parker’s thoughts have a darker tone to them. Such beautifully iconic almost animated storytelling panels throughout.

Get Kevin Nowlan for a Shoot interview and ask him why he used that Mundelo pseudonym.
