You guys are interviewing Walt Simonson next, aren't you? 😊
I fall in love with comics all over again when watching these. This was my era too. You've covered Art and the first gen he inspired like Lee and Liefeld. Will you ever cover J Scott Campbell's work?
Yeah I feel on that..Art Adam's story telling ability really made comics fun to read!..I really enjoyed the era of comics!
Btw, these issues have the BEST art I've seen in these older newsprint books that I've ever seen. It's so sick. I love it
Fantastic Four #347 was the first comic I ever bought. I got off a spinner rack in a Marsh grocery store in Indianapolis, Indiana. I've been hooked ever since.
I love this channel, as a kid i was fascinated by the golden and silver age, but recently, the late 80s and early 90s era has really grabbed me so you guys are looking at stuff that's right up my alley. Love it!
These were the first Marvel comics I ever bought, off of the newsstand and just before I discovered actual comic shops were a thing. Reading these, along with borrowing those x-tinction agenda X-Men books from a friend, and I was hooked. Thanks for the trip down memory lane guys!
This was the first evolution of his art work. He was a bit more realistic in the beginning, and this was a shift to an animated style. His current stylist is a mix of both. A super clean, animated influence art.
I have a very fond childhood memories of this, finding it on the grocery store shelf when they sold comics for a short time. Love, love, loved it
My first Fantastic Four issues! Got this at Walmart in a 4-pack with issue 350. Love these issues!!!
Lucky!
whoa, I forgot this was sold in a 4-pack in supermarkets.
I remember getting 348 on the newsstand that uses to be down the street from me as a kid. I hated that I didn't find 347 and 349 until I was a teen lol Thank goodness I learned Comic Shops existed!
So cool to see three beat-up and well-read comic books! That’s how it should be!
You guys gotta put the Simonson time fight issue under the microscope, a comic so nice you can read it twice
I just bought these three comics off of eBay last week! Love Art Adams.
For some reason I only bought #348 when it came out, probably because it has the best cover, so I just rectently had to save #347 and #349 from the bargain basement of my local LCS ;)
i think the messed up drapery on the beds is suppased to represent who is underneath, Reed was all stretched out and it's that same middle bed that looks off.. if you think about a stretched out reec piled up under the sheet like a pile of pulled taffee it starts to look a little less like just poor technique. lol
Loved those comics back in the day. Such a fun episode. Thank you guys, this really made my day.
I miss good Marvel comics, man. Breaks my fucking heart.
Another great dive. The only knowledge I ever had of the new FF was from the Marvel series 2 trading cards from the early 90s. I just picked up these books on ebay 😂
Great video, that run was fantastic. 💀🔥
I'm so happy you guys did this video. I was ten at the time, I've ALWAYS wanted to know about this and basically forgot. Thank you!
My kayfabe on a sunny Sunday
The word of the day “ball sack pubic” hahahahaha… love this episode guys! These three books are treasures!!! I grabbed them off the spinner back then too… Love the show! First time commenting… been listening for awhile though.
The underlighting kudos goes to Michael Golden (check out his early 80's Micronauts). Art Adams is totally inspired by him here.
NICE! Loved these issues as a kid.
I always loved this era of comics! I didn't care what people are saying 90s were bad because they failed to realize how many creative and new ideas Marvel and other companies had tried and this was definitely one of those great Gems! If Disney really wanted to make some serious money, they'd be promoting the heck out of stuff like this right now!
top of the line arthur adams art always makes it worth the wait. so long as you forget that todd mcfarlane drew just as detailed and did it monthly. the jock's work ethic put into practice.
Didn't Ben Grimm have a Thing suit?
@@jayzonely And that suit played into the Allred/Fraction run... another great series.
This was my first Art Adams comic too. If I recall correctly my LCS closed down for some reason, I had no idea how to locate another, the only one I recall may have been left was like an hour away (with traffic maybe) in Clifton NJ. Art Adams also drew a kick ass Wolverine with a mask on if I recall his cover of New X-Men (may have been a TPB or anniversary edition) the inside work looked nothing like that. Regardless, Adams is a treasure, and a book with Wolverine was a book that kid me was definitely gonna buy.
Great episode. I find it awkward when the inking switches to Milgrom. the lines get a bit heavy and lose the attention to detail that I love about Adams work.
Thanks for the flashback, cant wait to grab this in omnibus form
And now this is happening all over again!
Ben Grimm is actually wearing a Thing-Like battle suit, he mentions it in the issue at some point
Just snatched these off ebay before I even got 5 minutes in. Cant have that K.E. fucking me over haha
Seeing the ads for the NBA cards was a nice bonus
I never had the singles on this. I do have the trade of it. Good question though as to why the hell wouldn't you have Ghost Rider driving a space bike?
Loved the alternate FF issues of walt's run. Art adams is the best.(next to walt.) Good to see they are doing a mini/series on them again. Can't wait
Hi there......in answer to why Ben Grimm can change into the THing fast....at the time he was stuck in his Human form so Reed makes him a Thing exo-suit. ...that looks just like him as Thing. ironically he was dating Ms.Marvel who turned into a She-Thing at the time :-)
The Skrull ship looks like a Klingon Bird of Prey - I think Art Adams is a Star Trek fan! I've seen him incorporate Star Trek props before... Maybe Monkey Man and O'Brien?
"Are you laughing at the ad?"
"No, the domestic violence"
classic Ed.
That Sue Richards on page 23 looks like Tulip by Steve Dillon from a later Preacher issue. He was definitely influenced by Art Adams. But who wasn't?
Sound effects in first ish are SO Simonson
I’m here for anything Art Adams. And thanks for showing how influential he was even if they don’t admit it to the Image artist. I’ve always suspected it.
I kept looking for the Kitchen Sink.
Me too! lol😅😂😂
Hell yeah, #349 was one of my first comics and one of the only FF issues I kept after culling my collection.
Huge Art Adams fan, this and his Godzilla stuff are my top favorite things in Comics.
Totally remember those what ifs.
I am trying to recall this one.... dayum.
You are talking my era bro! 💪
One of my favs. Keep up the Good work guys
Damn that yellow monster looks like simonsons fing fang foom trading card
You'd think Richards would have had a rudimentary internet or some database.....no, no...just the national enquirer.
My 347 has a tiger electronics insert! Did they not all have that???
I think I actually prefer the Simonson Fantastic Four run to his run on Thor. Top ten run imo.
Art Adams is a better artist with the pass of time, This trilogy FF comics are Amazing
that was a great time for comics. better quality art and stories. i have to go and order some classic back issues from that time. keep up these old comics reviews.
Like Ed, the Punisher appearance went over my head. I thought it was a cheat and they were talking about the game ad on the back cover!
That cover for #348 is so awesome iconic even, but the way Ghost Rider is covered by the Hulk always bothered me. And that Hulk image is sooo dope also. Everyone on that cover looks mint, except for Ghost Rider.
32:00 Say what you want about Archie style but I dig it when Dan Decarlo has the girls doing synchronized walking.
These crowdy scenes made me think of an Alex Toth Rip Hunter story. He solves the problem of suggesting a moving mass of people in a drawing really nicely- highly effective shadow work. Those Rip Hunter books (I think he drew just two) are really really dumb, but some of my favorite Toth stuff.
Another great video. Would love it if guys could interview Kevin O’Neill before he completely disappears from the game.
Ran across a huge art adams "children of the atom" x-men poster in my closet, immediately asked the wife where I could hang it
Blue thunder!
Thinking too deep about this: why didn't Ghost Rider early on vibe something wrong about fake Sue?
There's still a part of my holding hope that Art Adams will complete Monkeyman and O'Brien. I know it'll never happen though.
I might have missed it, but why are there 2 ben grimm's on the 3rd issue cover?
Damn.... I love you fuckers.
Where have you been all my life?
Really tho... entertaining and informative is as hard to accomplish as a good black and white comic. And you fuckers don't need color to get me...the honesty is enough
Love Art Adams! Agree, his line work isn't super-detail and I wonder if its b/c he wants the colorists work to shine
Anyone know where these are collected?
WORLDS GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE?
Check out the topper line over the FF cover logo on all three issues when they are side by side.
