    I love that Ed always has his childhood comics on hand. Amazing that he had the forethought to keep em.

    Duuuuuude!
    When he pulled out X-Force #2...I felt a tear drop! That was my first introduction to Rob Liefeld art!
    It was off of that I started inking. Memories!

    Jim, I believe that purple bleed box at the top of the pages is a code for stocking newstands. It's so they knew it's a new issue from the month before, or maybe different title, looking at a stack from the top or something. (I can't imagine enough people knew that to use it).

    • @nicholasbielik7156
      @nicholasbielik7156 4 года назад +12

      Yeah, Andrew has it right. I worked at Waldenbooks from 1990-94, and I put out the comics for a good portion of that time. I had always seen the color codes, but didn’t realize their use until I started having to straighten out the spinner rack every week. If there was a green coded book stuck in with a stack of purples you could see it pretty quickly, and you always had to straighten everything before you decides what you were going to pull. Even with the replacing of old titles we never had room for all the titles they sent us-so keeping things in order was vital as there was a fair amount of competition for rack space.

    I think the Art Adams comparison is on-point. Liefeld’s art has always reminded me of Adams’

    Rob Liefeld did exactly what a comic book artist is supposed to do: he got readers excited enough about his comics to make them profitable for the publisher. And that readership followed him to Image where the comics were profitable for him. A lot of the vitriol from his fellow pro artists came from an unspoken truth: they might have been "better artists" than Rob but his work connected with fans on an emotional level and theirs didn't. Superhero comics may engage the intellect but the best art wins hearts and minds and thats what Rob Liefeld did.

    I really loved this issue and 100, enough to buy X-Force from 1-10 or 12 issues (and the Spidey crossover). I started digging on Rob’s art style when he illustrated Hawk & Dove for DC, so elements of Gideon were from Kestrel, the villain, who had a sort of ponytail. Hawk even sported some big guns and a vest/bandolier like a pre-Cable bauce

    Fun to see those Dynamic Duo Studios 3 Musketeers ads! You all should get that artist who did those to talk about his studio. He’s Arlen Schumer, and he’s on RUclips talking about comics as graphic art!

    Great video ! Comics have always been super inflated in price here in Trinidad...I've been going through everything on this channel and it's really a great resource for those of us who can't get physical copies of stuff!
    Also that guy at 21:17 looks like Nezu from Akira, who dies in a very similar way ! I wonder if it's a reference!

    Re: Gideon
    I may have mentioned once or twice in one of Rob's groups - I loved Gideon SO much, when we would role play X-Men on AOL, we had Mephisto rezz Gideon as a mutant demon.

    Great analysis guys! I remember first noticing an Arthur Adams cover on Uncanny X-Men Annual 9 when I was a kid and he quickly became my favorite artist. I can see what you're saying about him influencing a lot of artists in the 90's.

    At 21:00 I'm surprised you guys didn't make any comparisons to the scene in Akira when the old guy dies in the alleyway with pills falling out of his mouth, I'm 99% sure Liefeld had to be inspired by that scene. The only thing that makes me doubt it is that manga was relatively unknown in the US at the time, but the Akira movie had recently been released and that is a very memorable scene in the movie...

    that color bar bleeding off... is a printer's mark... its part of the color bar the printer uses(reads) to try and match the colors throughout the book.

    Another great episode guys. Is it possible that you might put Robs upcoming SnakeEyes comic under the microscope? From all the pages I've seen it looks very cool and he definitely seemed to put a lot of attention to it. Just a suggestion.👍♥️🔥⚡

    Surprised you didn't mention when you were talking about the tangents on page 2-3, and Jim even put his finger on it at one point, the robot in the bottom right corner of panel 1 makes it look like a big robot with a tiny head.

    Wasn't there an X-Force issue that was entirely in the sideways orientation?

    • @stanlee5465
      @stanlee5465 4 года назад +1

      Yes, it was linked with McFarlane Spider-Man issue that was also printed horizontally. I think the sideways Xforce is part 2 of the Sidways Spider-Man book

    Freshman year of anatomy at CCAD killed any appeal Liefeld or Lee had for me. What kills me every time with liefeld besides the generic backgrounds are the huge rendered craters where a guy's junk used to be.

      Superhero comics art isn't the same thing as academic art just as Jazz and Death Metal use the same 12 notes but achieve radically different results. Academic drawing may be technically "better" than superhero art but an academically drawn comic will not in all likelihood emotionally connect with a reader.

      X-Force #2 was 1 of 6 books I grabbed at the grocery store when I really 1st got into collecting. The cover is detached. 45:00 Took me a whole week to save enough for 1 book though as my mom packed my lunch. So I only had the 25¢ from milk carton money to work with. XD

    @ 20:04, 2nd page who drinks like that?! He is dumping the contents of the coffee mug into his mouth. Then, how the heck is this man gripping that cup with his whole hand like that?? In the following panel he corrected it, his fingers are further back and his thumb is actually supporting. Lastly, was it really necessary to take up two whole pages for this chick to poison his coffee??? 🤣 Much love Mr. Liefeld
