Moebius said that Stan wrote the dialogue based on his layouts. "When Stan gave me the dialogue, I was really impressed with the way he made all the characters speak, each with their own voice. I had even drawn some Mr. Average Guys, and he made them say the kind of stupid things those people looked like they would say. I could see when he had a problem because of some of my breakdowns, and how cleverly he found a way to deal with them every time."
I love Moebius lettering so much. European lettering was so different than American (mainstream) lettering, because it was so often done by the artist. It unifies the look of the pages even more, sometimes you can really see the drawing style in the lettering. Morris (Lucky Luke) is another great example. His lettering is kinda sloppy in a way, but it fits so well.
@Rob Y. It was a little cold, but I'd imagine Jim has a love/hate thing with Stan's dialogue after reading so much of it. I kind of agree. To me, Stan was like Lovecraft; more of an idea guy rather than a great dialogue writer. Stan liked melodrama turned to ten and it reflected in his writing. Melodrama is amazing for creating heroic situations, but not so much for dialogue, especially in the tight 19 page comic book format. OTOH, Stan helped invent the Everything Marvel Must Be Over the Top style. I mean, for Doom? Sure! Give me a three page soliloquy of him reflecting about how great a ruler he is with his people and robots parroting it back to him. For other characters, especially at the resolution point, I wish Stan'd just wrap it up. At the end of the day, I can't get upset if the architects of an genre (as Stan undoubtedly was) weren't amazing at everything single thing they attempted. I should be so lucky.
These are my favorite Silver Surfer books. I picked them up as a kid off of the grocery store newsstand in the 80s. Did not know much about Moebius then, but as I have gotten older and more into my comics I love this series more an more. So much so when I think "Silver Surfer" these two are the covers I think of first in my head.
I remember getting this two issues back then and loved the art but at the time I didn’t know how important his art and influence was on the industry. Great review.
Ed and Jim, the film with the Quentin Tarantino scripted line about Silver Surfer was in the Tony Scott directed film, Crimson Tide which starred Denzel Washington and Gene Hack man. Samuel L Jackson is not in the film. Quentin Tarantino was offered the job of script doctoring Crimson Tide after Tony Scott had directed his script for True Romance.
I would love to see you guys go over Mike Alred's silver surfer run. I think its the most perfect usage of his art ive ever seen. Great run with hilarious writing. weird funny doctor who silver surfer.
This makes me think of Silver Surfer Requiem by Esad Ribic. Grand depictions of Galactus, great metallic surfer, scale, and a good send off to the character. Would be cool to see various interpretations for comparison in one vid covering Kirby to the awesome Tradd Moore
Read the thumbnail graphic in the voice of Adam Scott from Step Brothers: “DANE COOK. PAY PER VIEW. TWENTY MINUTES, LET’S GO!” “MOEBIUS. STAN LEE. SILVER SURFER, LET’S GO!”
Yes .. the's a neverending amount of amazing Moebius illustrations that can googled ... no single other artist has ever produced such a bottomless pit of extremely high quality imaginative illustrations in a lifetime ...
That was my first moebius also, I coudn't read it 'coz it was a french version that my uncle owned, but I enjoy it a lot. I still wanna steal that comic from him.
The one year I lived in France, this was the one Moebius book that came out that wasn't an artbook pr a reprint. My copy of the recoloured version is in French. I do prefer the original "cheap" format comics though. I used to have the poster of the Moebius Silver Surfer - but it's now on my son's bedroom wall in the apartment he just moved into - his idea not mine. I raised him well.
quick correction...it was 'Crimson Tide' not 'The Hunt for Red October' with the Tarantino Kirby vs Moebius dialogue. (Also, I'm just now remembering...in the 1983 remake of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, wasn't Richard Gere obsessed with the Silver Surfer? And, whoa, according to a quick google search, Tarantino loved that movie.)
Here’s a link to page 3 of issue 2 I found that is (i think) the original art with no word balloons. i.pinimg.com/originals/4b/67/05/4b670597d7fe2af002825c4d343b7610.png
They skipped a page in the print version that you are showing here. They skipped what should have been page 7. In the latest 2020 edition the page I am referring to is page 12. It shows three panels showing a helicopter approaching Galactus' ship, and a crowd of people running away.
Moebius' longtime collaborator Jodorowsky said (in his Dune documentary, I think) that he couldn't connect with this story and most American comics in general. He saw Stan Lee as a "businessman" and not a true artist.

"Purple prose for seven-year-olds." I feel bad laughing at that.

“MOEBIUS. STAN LEE. SILVER SURFER, LET’S GO!”
Awesome watch, waiting for this book to arrive ATM
Thank you very much, Ive been dying to know what the original coloring looked like!!
Moebius is by far the greatest artist of all time.

One of the videos I've been waiting for. Great job.
Silver Surfer is just Space Charlie Brown. I was all about Mobius back in the day.
Who wouldn't let him kick the football?
Emo surfer thinking "Nobody understands me. What a bitch." 😆
That was my first moebius also, I coudn't read it 'coz it was a french version that my uncle owned, but I enjoy it a lot. I still wanna steal that comic from him.

Some elements made it into the fifth element movie, galatus ship, city skyline
Thanks for a look at a True Classic. A look at the Englehart/Rogers SURFER 🏄♀️ would be really cool-some of Roger’s best work! 🖖♾

I wish I could find the hardcover for under 50 bucks lol
I was litterly thinking how a video of this channel about this comic series would be like
