Love Mignola's style,
He's the only artist I know that can put shadows where they don't belong, while making them look exactly like that's where they belong!
Maybe visit 'Batman Black and White' 1996? Full of 'different' short stuff, when computer colors and rambling arcs were king
Good unknown comic of Batman that I somehow overlooked back in day and it’s Mignola art , have to try hunting this down.
LODK
The BEST ongoing Batman series!!!!
I’d love to see a review of the Doom that came to Gotham by Mignola and Troy Nixey!
How about Batman: Red Rain for some Halloween style Kelley Jones madness?
You guys are great for recommendations. I need to pick this up.
The higher-ups must've recognized Mignola's art pretty early cause they almost always gave him the best colorists. There's some early stuff where they even gave him the water color treatment.
Details please! Thanks
Oh, man, I just pulled this issue a day and a half ago (along with Jungle Adventure), mostly because you guys have been getting me pumped with all these nostalgic vids.
It's wild to watch Mignola go from Hulk, to Alpha Flight, to Batman and then Hellboy. Great video
Great issue! If you were so inclined to do more LOTDK, I highly recommend the 2 part story, Hothouse, in issues 42 & & 43. P. Craig Russell on art 👌
"Alien: Salvation" by Dave Gibbons/Mike Mignola/Kevin Nowlan or "Dr. Strange & Dr. Doom: Triumph and Torment" by Roger Stern/Mike Mignola next!!!
Chiarello is the king at coloring. Interview him. Great guy.
A deep dive on VINCENT LOCKE and his art and work on DEADWORLD with your guys' expertise would be a great splattergore/horror/halloween video for October...
I periodically go back and reread Hellboy, more than any other comic. Mignola is a timeless genius up there with the greatest of all time.
I was digging through my boxes last weekend and stumbled on this and flipping through it I thought it it as a Hellboy proto too!
Great Halloween season episode. I'd love to see y'all talk about Andrea Sorrentino's artwork from Gideon Falls. Sorrentino takes that use of red to another level, literally using red to make 3D planes.
Hey guys! Loving your channel here. I'm a major comicbook fan and it's so good to hear your passionate and critical comments about so much of the material that I hold dear and have consumed myself over the years. I'm first and foremost a Batman fan. During the 1990s there was so much amazing talent working on this character due to the success of the Tim Burton movies, an amazing time for a teenager me to pour over and devour so much artistic greatness and try to channel it out of a pencil and onto Bristol board.
I revisited this comic yesterday before watching this video. Still looks fresh and beautiful, a real work of art. Gothic by Grant Morrison and Klaus Janson is another of my personal faves from the LOTDK run. Keep up the great work and I'll keep on watching. Peace.
I once read in an interview Mignola was bad at drawing feet and really hated doing it.
Sure, practice makes perfect...but why practice when you can just give your main character hooves and cast all other feet in shadow for the next 30 years! Legend.
Colourists today really need to look at these older books to learn how to make modern comics look better. This is true art.
I bought this issue off the shelf. Loved it.
I rarely buy one shots but I bought this back in the day cause Batman + Mignola was a can't miss. Although the story was not much.
Do the story “Heat” from LOTDK.
Mignola’s adaption of Fritz Lieber’s “ Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser “ was a nice departure, but it shows Mignola’s ( perhaps unintentional?) mash-up of Simonson and P.Craig Russel’s styles. There are hints and glimpses of what is to come, but it is a full and cluttered book and it works well with the story. I bought the trade ( I think it started as a series ) from Dark Horse (2007) a few years after it came out. It was written by Howard Chaykin ( you either love him or hate him as a writer ) . The cover is pure “ hellboy “ MM, but the interior is a lavish well colored run through the box of crayons ( the great BIG one! ). I really enjoy the videos guys, thanks for putting them together!👍
I remember having these exact thoughts while reading this issue for the first time recently. Great job on this video!
list of demands
-Batman and the outsiders by mike barr and Jim Aparo
-Man of Steel by john Byrne
-Glen Danzig with Simon Bisley comics
-Sof' Boy by archer prewit
must choose at least one
I started reading comics as a young adult back in '88 and generally stayed away from hero titles out of stupid snobbery. This title was the exception and collected it until a gave up the hobby ten years later. You guys inspired me to open up the long boxes in storage for the first time in 25 years and this was the first title that emerged. I was surprised how much talent were involved in those first 100 issues. Now I know the historical context and significance of this issue, I relish re-reading it again. Keep up the good work!
Oh Gods. I didn't realise this existed. Thank you so much!
More Legends of the Dark Knight would be fun. Any Mignola is great. Thanks for sharing.
Great issue. Always kills me to see this comic in cheap discount long boxes. I had seen allot of Mignola covers on Batman so when I found this issue with interiors it felt like hitting gold!
Yes!!! Thank you for doing this influential issue!!!
Utility belt? Pun intended I hope. :)
Great breakdown on a really cool issue. Congats on the upcoming 2 years. In addition to the visual Lovecraft elements, I really think the story is a amped up version of "The Picture in the House." The ending is where it really connected it for me. Interested to see if any other Lovecraft fans feel the same.
I think Tony Harris was channeling Mignola in his early issues of Starman, especially the first Talking with David in issue #5.
So glad I got this issue a few years ago, I bring it out as a halloween decoration now haha
GD it guys, wish I saw this video day of, as a Raphael I would have loved a blacklight TMNT poster.
i remember how Warren Ellis' first DC work was an arc on Legends of the Dark Knight. Track that stuff down, you'll like it.
This looks amazing! Didn't know this existed. Know what else looks amazing? Octobriana 1976! Just got my copy, it's very cool.
More mignola for sure!!!!!
I got that comic signed
I didn't know of this one. Do you think editors really enjoyed the spooky look and that's how Kelley Jones got on Batman?
You guys should try and hunt down Mignola for a shoot.
oh guys ... this cover just wait 16.55 but this cover ...
How 'bout Los Bros Hernandez... specificallyJaime's "Death of Speedy".

So used to reading manga that every once and awhile I'll think they're going backwards through the comics
