Daredevil vs. Kingpin! A groundbreaking graphic novel that is essentially a Kingpin graphic novel (according to Miller himself) that pits Fisk against Daredevil with the live of Vanessa (Fisk's wife) hanging in the balance.
Sienkiewicz's impressionistic mixed-media, painted art stunned comic readers of the 80s. It remains highly influential to this day.

Bought this when it was first released back in 1986. Remember being totally blown away by it. The 80s wee a great time for comics. Also miss seeing Tom Scioli on your show
I know it's not technically a graphic novel but visually the Wolverine and Havok - Meltdown story is the only story that takes the same big visual swings as this. Muth, Williams, and some Duchamp! What a ride
The genesis of this book was that it was originally supposed to be two regular fill in issues of Daredevil, a book which Miller was circling again because sales had tanked since he’d left and they were openly talking about cancelling the title. (Ralph Macchio was the editor) But then Mazzucchelli was starting to catch Miller’s eye and meanwhile Sienkewitcz wanted to do the pages full color which they couldn’t figure out how to print in a regular comic, hence the jump to a graphic novel. (This was the dry run for ‘Elektra: Assassin’). I’m pretty sure Sienkewitcz was the originally intended artist for the storyline that became ‘Born Again’, no joke. I never understood why this book was so incredibly hard to track down tho, it took me a few years after publication to track it down and I had to search high and low for it. (*also, thanks for calling out the ‘peanut gallery’) Still my favorite run on a superhero, ever.
one of my favorite Marvel Graphic Novels is Star Slammers. I also have a warm spot for Ron Wilson's Super Boxers
I've seen Bill create his artwork and he is fearless in it's creation. It is a jaw dropping experience to see him do it.
Bill Sienkiewicz made a number of in-store Signing Appearances at Toronto's SILVER SNAIL shop, during the mid-1980's.. At that time, one of my most memorable experiences was flipping thru entire sketchbooks of Sienkiewicz's development artwork for this GN. In my mind's eye, the memory of those images were even better than the published work. Sienkiewicz was very generous with Toronto fans, during those visits. Politely answering every banal question, while he calmly worked his way thru a lengthy list of Sketch commissions..
In case anyone is interested, this GN is also available in the Daredevil-Miller Omnibus Companion, a really great collection. FWIW, page 1 in that edition is also on the left-hand side.

Goddamn. Bill Sienkiewicz, absolute master. Have this from my teenage collection from the 90s and have been obsessively collecting Sienkiewicz individual issues the last two years of renewed collecting. Have most of his ELEKTRA ASSASSIN and NEW MUTANTS masterpieces. But lesser known and equally gorgeous from around this era is his adaptation of MOBY DICK. Would love you guys to cover that...

One of my favourites. Sienkiewicz’s work is so visceral.
My first image from this book was from the same place Ed pointed out. And just like him it scared the shit out of me. Like seeing Hellraiser as a toddler. It took 15 years for me to find and read this masterpiece. Sienkiewicz is untouchable. Staples in Elektra! Holy shit. Glad that dude is still doing amazing work. CHECK OUT BIG NUMBERS! Bill can do anything. He changed comics for the better.

When it comes to the other marvel graphics novels , I’m really partial to Killraven: Warrior Of The Worlds. I’m a huge P. Craig Russell mark and that was when he was really finding his style
Some interesting stylistic choices there, too. I haven't read it in a while, but I remember some pages that were more like an illustrated story than sequential work.
I got the OG. Met Bill a few times and had him sign it along with his EPMD album cover

I love that Love & War hardcover, and that it includes Elektra: Assassin. I never noticed the pagination difference and now I’m really curious what he intended! ***Can y’all ask Sienkiewicz???***
Kaluta's Starstruck is the Marvel Graphic Novel that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned. Really stunning art and design in that one. Plus, you can compare the original and IDW printings like you did with Love and War.
The only one of these flip throughs you boys have done of Sienkiewicz’s output I haven’t immediately rushed to buy is the Artifact Edition, and that’s cause I just can’t find enough dollars for it. What a beauty this GN is, gives yah that itch only a sharp pen can scratch.

Did you notice one of Kingpin’s hired goons looks a lot like Garrett, the SHIELD/CIA cyborg? I’m sure can’t be a coincidence.
I really wish this type of innovation and creativity was still in mainstream comics after the 2000s

Question: Is there a David Mack without Bill Sienkiewicz? No disrespect to David Mack, love his work/artistic style. But would it have been allowed to flourish had it not be for pioneers like Seinkiewicz? Great video guys.
I would put Bernie Fuchs on the list of visible influences on Sienkiewicz.
I have a translated edition of this book and the first page is on the left side too. Always a strange choice.

As others have also noticed, Marvel redid some of the lettering and panel bordering when they reprinted this graphic novel.
Try these out guys: Silverheels (1987-Eclipse), Pigeons from Hell (1988-Eclipse), Dracula (1986-Marvel), Killraven (1983-Marvel), Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky (1986-Marvel), Marada The She-Wolf (1982-collected-1985-Marvel) and any of the American Flagg from FIrst.
Marada is a really good choice for Marvel Graphic novels. Early Bolton.

One of my fave Miller / graphic novels. Loved this when I got it in 87. More so than Watchmen. Easier to follow
I just checked mine, it's the most recent Brazilian edition, and the first page is indeed on the left. Weird, I don't remeber finding it wrong when I read it.
This book made quite an impression on me when I was a kid and it was first published in Brazil. But I would only be able to read it properly recently!

Great video on easily the best marvel graphic novel . You guys hit it on the spot about Bill Sienkiewicz being an artist of the highest order that was working in a medium where his creativity took full hold. I think there are some direct references or callbacks made but it's part of that illustrative tradition (Blair and Cruickshank before Sienkiewicz, now spiderverse animation) and not something negative like cancel culture of today's social media imply. The impact Bill S. gets from reworking mixed media or source material for maximum effect is all that matters. Look at the concept art Mary Blair did for Disney for a possible reference to Bill's use of wallpaper or cloth patterns. Seeing the actual brushstrokes, splatters, pastels, charcoal or cray pas made a huge impact to me where the regular comicbook art obscured those details.
