      @@josephg8818no, that’s not what happened. Eddie was starting the solo, and then Michael yelled and messed him up, causing him to have to speed up the whole solo. No, Eddie was not off. He never is. It was just a mistake because Michael got super hyped. I mean, I can’t blame him. 2 legends.

    • @ari.martin
      @ari.martin 7 месяцев назад +7

      I don’t think it had anything to do with Michael yelling. On the contrary, Michael called out his name as a wake up call. He was already behind. He probably wasnt hearing the band very well plus its tricky to start that particular solo just in the right place and he probably had not rehearsed with the band. Too bad it’s the only live version I’ve found by Eddie. No it’s not a good performance. He screwed up, it happens.

      @ari.martin
      I actually agree with you. You can totally tell something was up initially. As a musician, I can totally tell when you miss your cue to go. Music is all about timing and I wonder if they just didn't have much time to go over it. Perhaps Eddie flew in last minute and played the show. I'm sure back stage went something along the lines of "No worries, I'll just queue him in".
      Even at that level it's possible to make a miss take (not a mistake). Eddie did try to catch t when he heard his end trills didn't match up to the key sig, but yeah, hard to really fix such a stylized solo mid flight.
      On another hand, I'm sure the 99% of the crowd didn't notice. Sure it wasn't like the recording but "wow, it's eVh with MJ!"

    Just to think he thought that this song wasn't gonna be anything.... so he played this solo almost jokingly. I heard the studio monitors caught on fire during the recording. RIP Eddie. You left one heck of a mark and definitely RAISED the bar that many still can't even begin to touch.

    • @phantasystar88
      @phantasystar88 4 года назад +69

      Michael Jackson was already a big star, so idk if Eddie straight up thought the song wasn’t going to be anything. He did think he was being prank called when he was first offered the solo. When he found out it was real, he did the recording for free.

    • @Trill104
      @Trill104 4 года назад +38

      phantasystar88 Right, Eddie Van Halen revised the rock element of the song with Quincy Jones and by the time Michael got there the song was finished. Not knowing how Michael would feel about the changes, Quincy gave Mike the heads up hoping he wouldn’t get upset. But Mike loved the changes and was greatful that he cared about the song so much as to give it a TRUE rock element. The fact that Eddie didn’t want a song credit nor money was insane too. Dude gave Mike the gift of “Rock” on his album and rode that shit to the top of the charts.

      MJ was the biggest star in the world and had been a household name for a decade prior to Beat It. You talk like Eddie was doing a favour in a one sided relationship. The cross genre exposure this gave EVH did as much for him as he did for MJ.

      @@momagic383 That's not at all what I meant. What Michael did with Beat It had never been done before. So when Eddie played the solo, he didn't take it as seriously (Eddie said that himself) so when the record blew up, he was kinda surprised. Quincy is the one who called for Eddie anyway. So I didn't mean it at all the way you received it.

      Eddies hurt so much because it happened in the final 3 months of 2020. It would of hurt regardless oh when but everything tragic in 2020 has a little bit of extra sadness to it. Also the fact he died of cancer is just sad. It wasn’t any type of accident or him dying at a really old age. He was 65 and 65 isn’t that old by today’s standards. Most people at 65
      still have another 20 or so good years left. Also when it’s cancer you know the last years he did have left were very tough. All deaths are of course sad but. Michael Jackson’s death came out of nowhere and it was due to an accidental overdose so it was also shocking. Eddies was just sad.

    I love this performance. Eddie gets completely lost, plays all the right notes in the wrong places, finishes too early, yet simultaneously doesn't seem at all worried by any of this, and essentially just waits at the top of the fretboard for the rest of the song to catch up. Brilliant. People will disagree with me on this, but I really think Eddie just wasn't paying enough attention. Maybe not used to having other guitarists playing at the same time. Poor old Michael gets increasingly panicked with every 'Eddie'!

    I wonder if
    a) EVH was drunk
    b) just went off tempo because MJ told him to go before the actual solo part
    c) either forgot parts of it or just wanted to improvise
    also i don't know if he tunes the guitars himself of uses a roadie (a lot of bands use the roadies to make sure the thing's on tune at the shows) but you can tell the guitar had new strings (they didn't cut the extra bit on the headstock) so someone got fired lol

    • @JazzMac36251
      @JazzMac36251 5 лет назад +12

      Nah. It was just a miscommunication thing. MJ wanted to hype the audience for Eddie's solo, but he did so at the very beginning of the solo section after Eddie already started playing. That totally feels natural.
      But, since Eddie was already playing, he heard MJ shout his name and it caused him to hesitate for a split second. On stage, you have to keep your ears open because shit happens all the time and you have to recover. He probably thought, "Oh fuck...i came in early" or "Oh... Are we doing a thing? Did something happen? Do I need to adjust?" This solo is straight madness with notes, so by the time he realized MJ was just cheering him on, the freight train had already moved on and he had he play catchup the whole time.
      Two super stars like this probably weren't very rehearsed. It happens.

    • @motleycrue24

      Some people don't cut the slack of the strings off because they like how it looks, most professionally musicians have a guitar tech that cares for them Everytime they play not a roadie

    • @iceyplayz3388
      @iceyplayz3388 4 года назад
