He probably wasnt hearing the band very well plus its tricky to start that particular solo just in the right place and he probably had not rehearsed with the band. Too bad it’s the only live version I’ve found by Eddie. No it’s not a good performance. He screwed up, it happens.

Music is all about timing and I wonder if they just didn't have much time to go over it. Perhaps Eddie flew in last minute and played the show. I'm sure back stage went something along the lines of "No worries, I'll just queue him in". Even at that level it's possible to make a miss take (not a mistake). Eddie did try to catch t when he heard his end trills didn't match up to the key sig, but yeah, hard to really fix such a stylized solo mid flight. On another hand, I'm sure the 99% of the crowd didn't notice. Sure it wasn't like the recording but "wow, it's eVh with MJ!"

Not knowing how Michael would feel about the changes, Quincy gave Mike the heads up hoping he wouldn’t get upset. But Mike loved the changes and was greatful that he cared about the song so much as to give it a TRUE rock element. The fact that Eddie didn’t want a song credit nor money was insane too. Dude gave Mike the gift of “Rock” on his album and rode that shit to the top of the charts.

Eddies hurt so much because it happened in the final 3 months of 2020. It would of hurt regardless oh when but everything tragic in 2020 has a little bit of extra sadness to it. Also the fact he died of cancer is just sad. It wasn’t any type of accident or him dying at a really old age. He was 65 and 65 isn’t that old by today’s standards. Most people at 65 still have another 20 or so good years left. Also when it’s cancer you know the last years he did have left were very tough. All deaths are of course sad but. Michael Jackson’s death came out of nowhere and it was due to an accidental overdose so it was also shocking. Eddies was just sad.

MJ took advantage also by using his $$$ in a manner that cost him his life. A tragedy that many could learn lessons from.

A guitar player should be free to play what they want to play in the moment. It's a moment of inspiration. Eddie tried some different things, while still staying true to the feel he had on the record. sometimes it pays off, other times it doesn't. But at least it's inspired. (To anyone mad he didn't play it just like the record.)
Cole V I agree. Being a guitarist myself and a Hendrix mark, I am used to live performances being an entirely different animal to studio recordings and prefer it like that. A little variation is good but eddie did seem to just forget a part of the solo and go completely off in his timing...but it happens!!!! I'm just glad I found footage of the man himself playing it at an MJ concert!!!

Eddie gets completely lost, plays all the right notes in the wrong places, finishes too early, yet simultaneously doesn't seem at all worried by any of this, and essentially just waits at the top of the fretboard for the rest of the song to catch up. Brilliant. People will disagree with me on this, but I really think Eddie just wasn't paying enough attention. Maybe not used to having other guitarists playing at the same time. Poor old Michael gets increasingly panicked with every 'Eddie'!

I wonder if a) EVH was drunk b) just went off tempo because MJ told him to go before the actual solo part c) either forgot parts of it or just wanted to improvise also i don't know if he tunes the guitars himself of uses a roadie (a lot of bands use the roadies to make sure the thing's on tune at the shows) but you can tell the guitar had new strings (they didn't cut the extra bit on the headstock) so someone got fired lol

On stage, you have to keep your ears open because shit happens all the time and you have to recover. He probably thought, "Oh fuck...i came in early" or "Oh... Are we doing a thing? This solo is straight madness with notes, so by the time he realized MJ was just cheering him on, the freight train had already moved on and he had he play catchup the whole time. Two super stars like this probably weren't very rehearsed. It happens.

It was at Texas stadium (also gone now). Great concert, but when Eddie walked out for his solo I was blown away !

Exactly! I didn't know for the longest time that it was Van Halen playing the guitar solo because he didn't want to be credited on the album but when I heard it for the first time I thought to myself that it sounded just like EVH.
