Society's Sweet Tooth... the Brain's Response to Sugar | Amanda Maracle | TEDxQueensU

  • Normally, when we think of addiction the image of an alcoholic or someone that is a drug addict pops into our heads. That is what society tells us and that is what we have been lead to believe. However, what if you could be addicted to sugar? What if sugar, in high doses, had similar effects on your brain chemistry as cocaine? What is everything you thought about addiction was actually wrong? Amanda will explore these questions and highlight why we should rethink the way we define addiction within our society.
Amanda is currently completing her Ph.D. in Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Sciences in the Department of Psychology at Queen’s University. Her research investigates the behavioral and neurological changes associated with the development of compulsive substance intake within addiction. In addition to her research, she teaches several undergraduate courses for the department of Psychology, and collaborates on a number of research projects at Kingston General Hospital. She also volunteers her time as an executive committee member for the Kingston Regional Heritage Fair, and is involved with the newly developed PhD-Community Initiative currently being piloted by the School of Graduate Studies at Queen's.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I was addicted to sugar almost all my life. I would binge and try again and again to go on diets and always fail. I felt like that I just didn't have enough will power to stop. UNTIL I went on the Ketogenic Diet. After 3 days all my cravings for food or sugar went away. I could go without eating for 8 hours and not being hungry! I later realised that I had been hypoglycemic and suffered from insulin resistance and this is why I was sooooo hungry and would binge all the time...

I have to admit I have had sugar crashes in the past to the point where I fall asleep. I now have stevia, and it takes a lot of getting used to. I now do RTT (hypnotherapy) and have clients with sugar addiction. its real and people are becoming more and more aware of it. But if I have anything with sugar at home my brain think about it continuously so I just throw it out, especially when people bring cakes and sweets over Christmas. I have chickens and they don't eat anything sweet! Just goes to show that even they know better!

In comparison to physical addiction, psychological addiction occurs when a person does not have a physical need for a drug but rather a mental desire for it. Psychological addiction is most common in people who use substances like marijuana.

Raw honey occasionally is in order - too expensive to binge on anyway. A little sugar added at times, like with some tomato sauce, or a piece of cake at a birthday celebration; this is not really the problem.
Drinking loads of sugar constantly; like what happens by being addicted to coca-cola and other caffeine energy drinks, or by taking in fruit juice instead of fruit - buffered by fiber; this is what causes fatty liver and overload on the pancreas.

Well the difference is sugar is considered a food, which is readily available and cheaper than drugs. Where I live, low income folks can get $192 a month on food. Free money for those to get junk foods if they want to. If they run out of the food stamps, they can get emergency foods from local non profits which often include canned, boxed goods usually high in sugar/fats too. It's not like that for drugs...

When she starts talking about experiments and findings things get a little silly (and cruel).
What she is talking about is an extreme intake of sugar, which she forced on the lab rats to begin with.
Animals are habitual eaters and procreators. If you put too much fish in the fish tank, they eat it. It's not always or immediately about sugar.
The only animals that chill, gold dig and parade their academic credential on stage for money are humans.
