I started eating only real food a little over 4 months ago - I shop in the vegetable/fruit section and fresh meats counter at the grocery store and sometimes will get plain crackers (imported only, bread from the US makes me sick... not sure why) and sometimes I splurge on some cheese (Humbolt Fog is my favorite). I cook all my meals weekly so I have "fast food" during the week for lunch and dinner when I get home late from work. I've lost over 50lbs... it's just falling off of me. I have a ways to go still, but my diet is completely sustainable, I'm happy, I'm satisfied, I'm energetic. The power of food is incredible!
This was a very eye opening talk for me in many ways. I had never once considered that things such as protein powders were part of the processed food family. I also absolutely loved that Dr. McMillan wasn’t interested in telling us exactly what diet we should be following, just that we should be eating REAL whole foods. She wasn’t saying that vegan is the way to go or that we need to have more meats every day, she was telling us that we just need to stop and consider that the bulk of our diet is processed. The source of many of our problems can be found in what we are eating and what we are eating is fake food. If you look on the nutrition label of most processed foods, how many ingredients do you actually recognize and can pronounce? If you cannot pronounce it, then you probably shouldn’t be eating it, plain and simple. I also found it refreshing that she wasn’t just pushing the right amount of vitamins and minerals and etc. that we should be getting with every serving at every meal every day, but rather focused on the specialness of sharing a meal with family and friends and practicing mindful eating. We don’t just eat to get nutrients we eat as part of a social practice to bring yourself closer to one another, and that is an important concept that many who push fad diets forget because they are so focused on achieving a specific body image that society tells us we should have. You don’t need some ridiculous diet where you starve yourself or restrict yourself to only certain types of foods. You can still eat cake, and you can still have ice cream, just eat it in moderation and try to eat mostly whole foods instead of processed. It can be a challenge at first, especially since typically eating healthier can be a little more expensive, but take it from a poor college student such as myself and realize that as long as you’re budgeting and are smart about your purchases healthy eating like this CAN be done.
@@meman6964, Everyone, who struggles with eating properly, is not a food addict. I've never done illicit drugs, but I doubt that sugar has ever had a hold on me like narcotics has had on a drug addict.
Very nice talk, thank you. I got very sick about a year ago my doctors pretty much sent me home to die, it was the darkest day of my life. I decided in the doctors office that before I take there drugs or let them cut parts out of my body I would beat this with diet I quit smoking and drinking and started a living food diet my kitchen looks like a green house and a year later I am still walking and breathing thank God! What I have learned is eat to live not live to eat I hope that is the message you where trying to give. Thank you Joanna

Love her message. She's promoting exactly what a diet isn't....a diet. Eating well means dropping all the 'cant's and wont's'. Don't ban yourself from eating certain things just because society decided it's evil. Eat what your body is asking for. Eat meat, veg, pasta whatever! Even enjoy the chemical filled crap without feeling guilty. If you listen to your body, you don't ever need to feel guilty about what you eat, because you are giving it exactly what it needs.

What a superb talk! So many nuggets of wisdom. Also humble enough to acknowledge that the world still has a lot to learn or discover about nutrition. I found this so refreshing in a world that is so full of dogma.
The message hers is "Eat Real Food". A very simple and very effective message to base your eating habits on. Don't worry and 'Carbs'. Don't worry about 'Fat'. Don't worry about 'Protein'. Forget the fancy 'Diets'. Don't worry how others 'Eat'. Just eat plenty of REAL FOOD and you will have nothing to worry about. Don't worry if your a vegan or omnivore. KEEP IT SIMPLE and EAT REAL FOOD.
And hence why she has no idea what she is talking about. We should be self-aware and mindful of everything we put in our bodies. Food is now engineered to be addictive. This has been known for decades. Eating fat DOES NOT make you fat. Eating excessive junk carb/starch from flour, wheat, refined sugar, HFCS, potato, rice, juice etc. is what leads to fat storage. The food science shows that continuously eating from these categories keeps your blood sugar high and your brain "happy". Potatoes are real food and one of the worst you can eat. Uncooked cassava will kill you. So enough with the "real (unprocessed) food" buzzcrap.
@ Uisce Preston I eat as my grandparents did, they lived to between 91 and 96. None of the 4 got ill until their bodies slowed down. They were carnivore ate real butter, ate home grown vegetables and lots of potatoes. They worked hard, resting each evening and on Sundays. Sugar was in puddings, cakes and biscuits were in moderation and after dinner not in drinks. My Dad now 90 and very well for his age loved potatoes he could eat 10 as a working man. They are not bad for you, it’s how they are cooked and what’s added.
Lots of good points in this but the most valuable imo, because it is so oft over-looked, is HOW people eat, particularly in certain cities eat-on the hoof and in a hurry, prioritising work because that's what we're conditioned to aspire to/pressured into. How you eat is a reflection of how you treat yourself generally. Eat sociably and slowly and laugh as much as you can. The French smoke like chimneys, eat a lot of bread, red meat and cheese, yet have fairly low rates of heart disease. I am convinced a large contributor to this is their comparative lack of neuroses about fats and calories.

My dad is a firm believer in real food, since we are young he forbid us from eating anything that comes out of the package, it was hard ofc being kids and you are not allowed to eat snacks as your friends do, instead, we have lunch box made by mom with real food in it, he said how can you trust the food in a can even after years won't go bad and you get it into your system, now growing up and get more education I agree with him, 3 years moving to UK my health deteriorating, i am gaining weight too much because the comfort of eating processed food, I am trying to educate my partner who is very stubborn still indulge on heavily processed food, its need teamwork to change our habit and lifestyle, hopefully this ted talk little bit opened his mindset, there is a reason why people lived in suburb/village in Asia healthier and live longer
The food industry is just that - an industry. And like every industry, they too want to make as much profit as possible. They put profit before people. And only when they decide to make that change can we trust that they have our best interest as a priority. Edit: I remember reading about a study that was done where a group of Americans and a group of French people were shown a picture of a chocolate cake and were asked what was the first word that came to mind. The Americans said 'guilt' while the French said 'celebrate'. Our attitude to food matters. I highly recommend reading In Defense of Food if you enjoyed this talk.
Excellent talk. Although I'm a fan of WFPB for weight loss AND reversing disease, the concept she promotes is more doable for most folk. Plants and wholefoods are a powerhouse of nutrition and help our bodies heal.
We should all be outraged at the deceit, manipulation, bribery, & extortion committed by the food, healthcare, hospital, & pharma industries to prey on our financial carcasses, using advertising, legislation to maximize our consumption of high profit, shelf-stable food-like products, health services & medicines.

Well said. Our food motto when I was a young mom in la leche League was, "a wide variety of food in as close to its natural state as possible" ... Years later, I still feel that a combo of JERF (Just Eat Real Food) - most of that plants, much of it fresh, organic, nutrient dense and local - and attending to personal intolerances etc fit me best. I grow some of my fruits and veggies, get most of the rest from local organic farmers at our markets (which is a great social adventure as well!) Our family has genes for intolerance to gluten, so I've been off those for a decade, and an more likely to eat rice or quinoa with herbs etc than to eat "gluten free" processed products. Dairy triggers inflammation for me, so I mostly avoid that ... I'm also inspired by the Blue Zones projects, and appreciate the reminder that joy is a vital component
My diet now is composed of 20% childhood memory food, 10% is cooked vegan n the other 70% is raw vegan. I heal naturally from hyperthyroidism. My face is clear from heavy acnes before. I feel alive now
Yeah, she's right. It's important to change what and how much we eat. I think that prioritizing whole foods is best and occasionally we can eat junk food. I think it's good to maintain a health weight according to BMI. Then we'll know to restrict calories in order to have a healthy weight.
I eat fruit, raw vegetables and nuts all day. For dinner I eat meat/fish, cooked veggies and occasionally a sweet potato or quinoa. I only drink water. I weigh 105 lbs and I struggle to keep weight on. Because of my diet I don’t deny myself a slice of cake at a party or a candy bar at the theater. I think if 80% of what you eat is “real” food it’s ok to occasionally treat yourself
I definitely call myself a whole fooder, but have to admit to slipping and sliding all over the place. I haven't lost the idea that, just a little, or just one more of whatever processed food will be ok. Therefore, I don't feel I'm doing right by my body. Nice talk. Thanks for the reminder.

I gave up all my sugary junk food and desserts and lost 30+ pounds. I came to terms with the fact that I am a sugar addict. Also, sugar causes inflammation which leads to a host of health problems.
Only a few people booed, the rest stayed quiet. We all know the answer. For most of us we'd be happy to take a pill to have all our dietary needs fulfilled and we stayed in perfect weight and body proportions as long as there were not health risks involved
Thought provoking video. While she was speaking I couldn't help but think of the hey days of the "all you can eat" American buffet system. I'm pretty sure it was only as bad as it was b/c Americans are so focused on "bang for your buck". They've been trained this way. Probably the same dynamic behind the ultra-pro-protein bars and powders. I have a feeling it has more to do with money and efficiency than it does food. Not sure about other countries, as I'm not well traveled(yet). You can see this mentality in practically everything we do. Look at the way we run businesses, government, education, holidays(OMG CHRISTMAS), even meds and supplements. We will throw pride, craftsmanship, caring for other humans, relaxing vacation time, feel good family get togethers, safety, and everything else right out the window in favor of perceived efficiency and a "good bargain". Time for balance, yeah?

I didn't know how bad eating habits are in Australia. I am truly surprised. I have actually an hour break for lunch, we have a restaurant at my workplace and we always sit together with my colleagues and get to know each other by talking over a meal. I thought this was normal.

RAW VEGAN 40-50%fat, 10-20% protein, the rest carbs...depending on your activity level..I weight train so I like more protein from Raw sources like sprouts and greens..fats from coconut, avocado, nuts/seeds- carbs from a piece of fruit/day and veggies....I love this way of eating...LIGHT AND LOVE

Eating is not a cimplicated science, eat any real, unpackaged food you like and listen to your body. Those foods will fill you up so you won't overeat. That includes all food groups
I think all nutrition scientiests in the world should have a conference where its compulsory they all attend. They need to all get locked up and not permitted to leave until these 'experts' come to a consensus.

I love food but NOT all the food it's friendly to my belly. Medically diagnosed in 2015 with IBS and Chronic migraines in 2008 my body literally forced me to look for alternatives and I'm glad that it did. I am 30 lbs lighter, I am 34 yrs old but can pass for 26 and migraines have decreased....so ppl do something for your body and it will return the favor.

I've been looking at changing my diet. Keto sticks out... But I've never considered getting that processed stuff made specially for keto because it is all expensive. Whole foods is kinda the only choice for going cheap and healthy. I am reminded of the old saying "You can only have two. Fast, cheap, or good." Edit: and I don't mean the chain of grocery stores when I say whole foods, but I'm not necessarily saying I wouldn't go there
Don't despair. Keto/paleo diets are just about eating meats, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole fruits, veggies, eggs, etc and maybe limiting your dairy. You don't want overly-processed foods in any diet. No wheat-type grains, no added/bad sugars, no starches, no baked goods. Avoid potato, pastas, bread, rice, juices, flours, soda, etc. The diet takes care of itself. You want some tips. 1) Salads without croutons and sugary dressings. Fill it with leafy greens, berries, tomatoes, diced chicken, natural bacon, nuts, raisins, olives, mandarin slices, etc. 2) Make a quinoa, green lentil, black beans, red pepper and corn blend with taco seasoning, fajita chicken and nacho cheese. You will never get sick of this. 3) Scrape your pizza toppings off and put them over a bed of quinoa cooked in chicken broth and grated garlic. You won't miss crust. 4) Lunch and dinner omelets are your new best friends. Veggie and meat them up! 5) Because you NEVER eat breakfast. Breakfast is unnatural imposition of industrial and governmental lies and nonsense. Thousands of years ago we would be out hunting and gathering all morning; not eating leftovers or boxed cereal. Drink water or green/white tea until noon. No calories before midday! If you break yourself from the bad carb cycle. And it will be rough for about a week. But if you purge bread/flour/pasta, sugar, rice and potato from your diet, you will stop the craving for them. You will make healthier choices, eat less, not even miss the mostly empty calories of morning death meal. And be generally fitter and happier while your body burns off the glucose stored as fat as opposed to the high levels you keep in your blood from bad dieting. The other thing you must remember is that fiber is essential to all diets; removing grains probably means adding back fiber. Although most "grains" are refined white fiberless garbage. So add whole fruits, veggies, unprocessed oats, flaxseed or meal, chia seeds, etc. A good place to stuff these is in a smoothie. Happy hunting!
I went from not eating at all unless i felt i was going to die if i did not (anorexic- 20 years) to eating what everyone else seemed to eat and instantly got a bit overweight. In the meantime, i fixed that too and i look and feel positively radiant and lean but full. I have no intention of looking like a barbie doll. It's not healthy. I live by these rules only: -I do not eat any processed foods as a baseline. Mostly plant-based. -I do not eat out of the house/ready meals, except for 1 day a week, in case of party or not feeling well enough to cook. (this only realistically happens once or twice a month anyway) To me, they are lifesavers instead of timesavers. -I do not eat it unless I cooked it. -I do not buy anything that's not alive. My basket does not contain more than fruits, vegetables, herbs, flour, eggs, whole foods like that. If i need for instance a package of cooking cream, i make sure that every dish i plan does not contain more than 1 of the more processed things and it may never be more than 5% of the total dish. -I am Northern-European, Potato eater is my heritage, i eat potatoes as my staple. I love potatoes. -I eat until not hungry, i don't eat until stuffed. -I don't have a habit of snacking or having dessert anyway. I have my hands full with all this cooking to even think about extras, unless i'm going all out to entertain friends. -On friday i buy 2 snacks (whatever i want! This does not include family sized or multi serving packaging) and a couple of beers to celebrate the weekend. -My diet includes everything because i am an omnivore but animal products are for me a flavoring, not a main component. -I freeze leftovers from homecooked dishes in case i don't feel up to cooking. It's a great excuse buster for going out for a bite to eat. -In late spring-summer-fall i eat only what i grow myself. Yes indeed, gardening is a wonderful, low impact, stress relieving hobby with a tasty bonus. Love it. Money can not compare to this kind of wealth. I started gardening at my lowest point in life. I am kind of concerned because eating disorders are often about the fear of losing control so people create rules for themselves and have their weight as something that they can/want to have the complete control over. I am really proud of you that you have started eating again but you do give yourself those rules so you don't lose control.
What makes diet research and education so tricky is each participant approaches the task from a particular ideology. Vegans want to do research showing that an all plant diet is best and they do that and they get the research results they were looking for. Paleo promoters do the same and so on and so forth. We are finally zeroing in on the real truth. I think a few basic principles are key and they have been known for quite some time. 1. Eat real food. If you can remove 99% of the processed (manufactured) food from your diet you will lose significant amounts of weight and your health will improve 99% of the time. 2. Starches, Carbohydrates and Sugars should not be ingested along with fats on the same plate at the same time. The hormone reactions that occur in the body and which transport fat into the tissues tell us this is a toxic mixture that is literally killing people. Paleo people have a lot of things right. Particularly their emphasis on healthy fat and non-processed foods. Vegans have a lot of things right. Particularly their emphasis on non-processed, real, greens, vegetables that are low on the glycemic index. Unfortunately we have the diet wars and it foments bad information.

The only thing I think matters is our evolved genes from our ancestors and adapted that to our environment. And listen to your body everyday. The global longevity study, blue zones, identify centenarians in 5 hot spots around the world and found that their diets vary, mainly plant based but semi-vegetarians except Sardinians which is not even plant based. The 3 common denominators out of 6 all have to do with emotional state and family. None go to the gym except meaningful, everyday chores that kept them active. My spouse and I are very typical of that. We're both Asians from different countries, I love vegetables, abhor blood-smelling meat since 3, while the opposite with her. We both became first vegans for the principle of non-violence since 1989, 27 years ago. Then becoming harder to lose that belly fat due to high carb consumption. She suffered a catastrophic stroke 10 years ago due to overwork and heavy sweet consumption. 2013 we discovered Ketogenic Diet (imagine Ketogenic with no meat, some doctors even said that's an oxymoron) and both went on it. she lost 40 lbs within a 3 months period, all main index improved like miracles ( A1C, triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL) while I struggled so hard with it bc I abhor the smell of eggs which we added. She slipped off it 2 times and every time if she went back on it same miracle happened. We now hardly eat grains, a lot of good oils, cheese, eggs and dark green veggi while still can stick with our Non-violence principle which make us feel meaningful. So I think diet do matter, macro-nutrients do count but it has to be tailored made to your upbringings, your sensitivity and tolerance level and most importantly your spiritual, emotional well-beings bc we a tri-state being, not just physical. Yes! So tired of the villification of whole foods. Nobody got sick from eating bananas, carrots, or potatoes. (not counting fast-food french fries here)
Was anyone else tempted by that pill? Not for everyday, but just the crazy, busy week days. Then on the weekend we can relax and prepare high-quality, healthy meals. Maybe I'm just a lazy girl who refuses to eat processed foods and is sick of exhausting herself just trying to eat healthy.
Try intermittent fasting. I love it. It's healthy and gives you more time in you day. I eat my first of two (sometimes one) meals about 12 or 2 p.m. Other days I don't eat until dinner. Watch Dr. Jason Fung and Dr Valter Longo on RUclips. Your body heals and grows healthier while you're not eating. And it's soooo much easier than dieting.
But butter contains arachadonic acid. It causes inflammation and pain in the joints and body. That's why people with rheumatic diseases aren't allowed to eat it. I even did a small study on the female body about it - period cramps got much worse while eating butter. We did the study with organic butter from grass fed cows. Though it is true, that processed oils that are high in PUFAs are also inflammatory.
In my opinion, out of three items you asked about at the end the odd one out is butter because it's the only natural one out of the tree. You can keep the other two. You talked about real food, then you rejected the butter. The one food that your grandmother would definitely have chosen.
I agree with PoweredbyPlants. My body is not a cemetery for animals. Life is a mind, body, and spirit operation....how can people actually chew on another animal and feel good about that meal, knowing it's in there rotting, knowing that animal rotting inside of your gut had a life before, knowing that animal suffered and died to feed you? Rotting meat in someone else's colon is none of my business though. Go for it Hoss. It's your life.
The healthiest diet in the world is raw vegan 5 days a week and other 2 have healthy meat(no red meat) but liver meats/fish like salmon and skinless chicken.(oatmeal everyday for breakfast and you’ll b healthy for the rest of your lifec
The healthiest diet that's we have actual evidence for is the Japanese diet of lots of fish, veg, low dairy, fermented foods, miso etc. Raw vegan diets are new and we dont know yet. Also takes all the pleasure out of food if it's all raw and bland.
I'm 19 and 3 weeks ago I was converted into a vegan diet and the results I'm receiving are crazyy! Now, there's no going back from this lifestyle for me
I've been vegan for 3 years now, it's my diet, I feel my best, I perform well, have more energy than the guys I compete with in sports but most of my vegan life has been in lockdown, I wasn't interacting w anyone anyway and never thought veganism would affect me negatively at any moment until now, ppl are eager to interact, I have new friends, my relatives r always celebrating a birthday and I sit there on the corner not being able to join in, to participate, partake of the food, which is the element that unites us and I kinda feel frustrated and isolated. I don't know what to do
Bring your own food to pass enthusiastically. Offer restaurant suggestions that are more inclusive for you, one that at least have something you can ask to be reasonably modified, etc. My husband and I have been vegan for 7 years, and now have two vegan children. Our family has accepted it because it’s a happy part of our lives that we’ve embraced wholeheartedly and they know won’t go away. Let it continue to be joyful for you and focus on the company, not the food during your outings: you can always enjoy a yummy drink or something. It takes time but if it’s important to you, try not to be discouraged ❤

Moderation doesn't work for food addiction. Tell a drug addict, "just cut your dosage".

Very nice talk, thank you. I got very sick about a year ago my doctors pretty much sent me home to die, it was the darkest day of my life. I decided in the doctors office that before I take there drugs or let them cut parts out of my body I would beat this with diet I quit smoking and drinking and started a living food diet my kitchen looks like a green house and a year later I am still walking and breathing thank God! What I have learned is eat to live not live to eat I hope that is the message you where trying to give.

Love her message. She's promoting exactly what a diet isn't....a diet. Eating well means dropping all the 'cant's and wont's'. Don't ban yourself from eating certain things just because society decided it's evil. Eat what your body is asking for. Eat meat, veg, pasta whatever! Even enjoy the chemical filled crap without feeling guilty. If you listen to your body, you don't ever need to feel guilty about what you eat, because you are giving it exactly what it needs.

What a superb talk! So many nuggets of wisdom. Also humble enough to acknowledge that the world still has a lot to learn or discover about nutrition. I found this so refreshing in a world that is so full of dogma.
The message hers is "Eat Real Food". A very simple and very effective message to base your eating habits on. Don't worry and 'Carbs'. Don't worry about 'Fat'. Don't worry about 'Protein'. Forget the fancy 'Diets'. Don't worry how others 'Eat'. Just eat plenty of REAL FOOD and you will have nothing to worry about. Don't worry if your a vegan or omnivore. KEEP IT SIMPLE and EAT REAL FOOD.
And hence why she has no idea what she is talking about. We should be self-aware and mindful of everything we put in our bodies. Food is now engineered to be addictive. This has been known for decades. Eating fat DOES NOT make you fat. Eating excessive junk carb/starch from flour, wheat, refined sugar, HFCS, potato, rice, juice etc. is what leads to fat storage. The food science shows that continuously eating from these categories keeps your blood sugar high and your brain "happy". Potatoes are real food and one of the worst you can eat. Uncooked cassava will kill you. So enough with the "real (unprocessed) food" buzzcrap.

I eat as my grandparents did, they lived to between 91 and 96. None of the 4 got ill until their bodies slowed down. They were carnivore ate real butter, ate home grown vegetables and lots of potatoes. They worked hard, resting each evening and on Sundays. Sugar was in puddings, cakes and biscuits were in moderation and after dinner not in drinks. My Dad now 90 and very well for his age loved potatoes he could eat 10 as a working man. They are not bad for you, it’s how they are cooked and what’s added.
Lots of good points in this but the most valuable imo, because it is so oft over-looked, is HOW people eat, particularly in certain cities eat-on the hoof and in a hurry, prioritising work because that's what we're conditioned to aspire to/pressured into. How you eat is a reflection of how you treat yourself generally. Eat sociably and slowly and laugh as much as you can. The French smoke like chimneys, eat a lot of bread, red meat and cheese, yet have fairly low rates of heart disease. I am convinced a large contributor to this is their comparative lack of neuroses about fats and calories.

My dad is a firm believer in real food, since we are young he forbid us from eating anything that comes out of the package, it was hard ofc being kids and you are not allowed to eat snacks as your friends do, instead, we have lunch box made by mom with real food in it, he said how can you trust the food in a can even after years won't go bad and you get it into your system, now growing up and get more education I agree with him, 3 years moving to UK my health deteriorating, i am gaining weight too much because the comfort of eating processed food, I am trying to educate my partner who is very stubborn still indulge on heavily processed food, its need teamwork to change our habit and lifestyle, hopefully this ted talk little bit opened his mindset, there is a reason why people lived in suburb/village in Asia healthier and live longer
The food industry is just that - an industry. And like every industry, they too want to make as much profit as possible. They put profit before people. And only when they decide to make that change can we trust that they have our best interest as a priority.
Edit: I remember reading about a study that was done where a group of Americans and a group of French people were shown a picture of a chocolate cake and were asked what was the first word that came to mind. The Americans said 'guilt' while the French said 'celebrate'. Our attitude to food matters. I highly recommend reading In Defense of Food if you enjoyed this talk.
Excellent talk. Although I'm a fan of WFPB for weight loss AND reversing disease, the concept she promotes is more doable for most folk. Plants and wholefoods are a powerhouse of nutrition and help our bodies heal.

Our food motto when I was a young mom in la leche League was, "a wide variety of food in as close to its natural state as possible" ...
Years later, I still feel that a combo of JERF (Just Eat Real Food) - most of that plants, much of it fresh, organic, nutrient dense and local - and attending to personal intolerances etc fit me best. I grow some of my fruits and veggies, get most of the rest from local organic farmers at our markets (which is a great social adventure as well!)
Our family has genes for intolerance to gluten, so I've been off those for a decade, and an more likely to eat rice or quinoa with herbs etc than to eat "gluten free" processed products. Dairy triggers inflammation for me, so I mostly avoid that ... I'm also inspired by the Blue Zones projects, and appreciate the reminder that joy is a vital component
Whole foods are good because they don't have refined carbs. Also, Atkins advocated plant foods and he had a vegetable garden.
My diet now is composed of 20% childhood memory food, 10% is cooked vegan n the other 70% is raw vegan. I heal naturally from hyperthyroidism. My face is clear from heavy acnes before. I feel alive now

Yeah, she's right. It's important to change what and how much we eat. I think that prioritizing whole foods is best and occasionally we can eat junk food. I think it's good to maintain a health weight according to BMI. Then we'll know to restrict calories in order to have a healthy weight.
I eat fruit, raw vegetables and nuts all day. For dinner I eat meat/fish, cooked veggies and occasionally a sweet potato or quinoa. I only drink water. I weigh 105 lbs and I struggle to keep weight on. Because of my diet I don’t deny myself a slice of cake at a party or a candy bar at the theater. I think if 80% of what you eat is “real” food it’s ok to occasionally treat yourself

I gave up all my sugary junk food and desserts and lost 30+ pounds. I came to terms with the fact that I am a sugar addict. Also, sugar causes inflammation which leads to a host of health problems.

Thought provoking video. While she was speaking I couldn't help but think of the hey days of the "all you can eat" American buffet system. I'm pretty sure it was only as bad as it was b/c Americans are so focused on "bang for your buck". They've been trained this way. Probably the same dynamic behind the ultra-pro-protein bars and powders.
I have a feeling it has more to do with money and efficiency than it does food. Not sure about other countries, as I'm not well traveled(yet).
You can see this mentality in practically everything we do. Look at the way we run businesses, government, education, holidays(OMG CHRISTMAS), even meds and supplements.
We will throw pride, craftsmanship, caring for other humans, relaxing vacation time, feel good family get togethers, safety, and everything else right out the window in favor of perceived efficiency and a "good bargain".

I didn't know how bad eating habits are in Australia. I am truly surprised. I have actually an hour break for lunch, we have a restaurant at my workplace and we always sit together with my colleagues and get to know each other by talking over a meal. I thought this was normal.
What country are you in? This hasn't been my experience in the US where most people now eat their lunch at their desks while continuing to work.

I love food but NOT all the food it's friendly to my belly. Medically diagnosed in 2015 with IBS and Chronic migraines in 2008 my body literally forced me to look for alternatives and I'm glad that it did. I am 30 lbs lighter, I am 34 yrs old but can pass for 26 and migraines have decreased....so ppl do something for your body and it will return the favor.

I've been looking at changing my diet. Keto sticks out... But I've never considered getting that processed stuff made specially for keto because it is all expensive. Whole foods is kinda the only choice for going cheap and healthy. I am reminded of the old saying "You can only have two. Fast, cheap, or good."
Edit: and I don't mean the chain of grocery stores when I say whole foods, but I'm not necessarily saying I wouldn't go there
Don't despair. Keto/paleo diets are just about eating meats, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole fruits, veggies, eggs, etc and maybe limiting your dairy. You don't want overly-processed foods in any diet. No wheat-type grains, no added/bad sugars, no starches, no baked goods. Avoid potato, pastas, bread, rice, juices, flours, soda, etc. The diet takes care of itself. You want some tips.
1) Salads without croutons and sugary dressings. Fill it with leafy greens, berries, tomatoes, diced chicken, natural bacon, nuts, raisins, olives, mandarin slices, etc.
2) Make a quinoa, green lentil, black beans, red pepper and corn blend with taco seasoning, fajita chicken and nacho cheese. You will never get sick of this.
3) Scrape your pizza toppings off and put them over a bed of quinoa cooked in chicken broth and grated garlic. You won't miss crust.
4) Lunch and dinner omelets are your new best friends. Veggie and meat them up!
5) Because you NEVER eat breakfast. Breakfast is unnatural imposition of industrial and governmental lies and nonsense. Thousands of years ago we would be out hunting and gathering all morning; not eating leftovers or boxed cereal. Drink water or green/white tea until noon. No calories before midday!
If you break yourself from the bad carb cycle. And it will be rough for about a week. But if you purge bread/flour/pasta, sugar, rice and potato from your diet, you will stop the craving for them. You will make healthier choices, eat less, not even miss the mostly empty calories of morning death meal. And be generally fitter and happier while your body burns off the glucose stored as fat as opposed to the high levels you keep in your blood from bad dieting.
The other thing you must remember is that fiber is essential to all diets; removing grains probably means adding back fiber. Although most "grains" are refined white fiberless garbage. So add whole fruits, veggies, unprocessed oats, flaxseed or meal, chia seeds, etc. A good place to stuff these is in a smoothie.

I went from not eating at all unless i felt i was going to die if i did not (anorexic- 20 years) to eating what everyone else seemed to eat and instantly got a bit overweight. In the meantime, i fixed that too and i look and feel positively radiant and lean but full. I have no intention of looking like a barbie doll. It's not healthy. I live by these rules only:
-I do not eat any processed foods as a baseline. Mostly plant-based.
-I do not eat out of the house/ready meals, except for 1 day a week, in case of party or not feeling well enough to cook. (this only realistically happens once or twice a month anyway) To me, they are lifesavers instead of timesavers.
-I do not eat it unless I cooked it.
-I do not buy anything that's not alive. My basket does not contain more than fruits, vegetables, herbs, flour, eggs, whole foods like that. If i need for instance a package of cooking cream, i make sure that every dish i plan does not contain more than 1 of the more processed things and it may never be more than 5% of the total dish.
-I am Northern-European, Potato eater is my heritage, i eat potatoes as my staple. I love potatoes.
-I eat until not hungry, i don't eat until stuffed.
-I don't have a habit of snacking or having dessert anyway. I have my hands full with all this cooking to even think about extras, unless i'm going all out to entertain friends.
-On friday i buy 2 snacks (whatever i want! This does not include family sized or multi serving packaging) and a couple of beers to celebrate the weekend.
-My diet includes everything because i am an omnivore but animal products are for me a flavoring, not a main component.
-I freeze leftovers from homecooked dishes in case i don't feel up to cooking. It's a great excuse buster for going out for a bite to eat.
-In late spring-summer-fall i eat only what i grow myself. Yes indeed, gardening is a wonderful, low impact, stress relieving hobby with a tasty bonus. Love it. Money can not compare to this kind of wealth. I started gardening at my lowest point in life. If i can do it, you can do it. RUclips keyword 'allotment'. Find us, crazy bunch of veg lovers. We are positively, joyfully obsessed with community and growing beautiful food, no matter where, in every nook and cranny, on whatever size piece of soil, with whatever skill. Join our loving, helpful community. No question is ever dumb enough for any of us. Come and have a laugh! See you there.
I am kind of concerned because eating disorders are often about the fear of losing control so people create rules for themselves and have their weight as something that they can/want to have the complete control over. I am really proud of you that you have started eating again but you do give yourself those rules so you don't lose control.

What makes diet research and education so tricky is each participant approaches the task from a particular ideology. Vegans want to do research showing that an all plant diet is best and they do that and they get the research results they were looking for. Paleo promoters do the same and so on and so forth. We are finally zeroing in on the real truth. I think a few basic principles are key and they have been known for quite some time. 1. Eat real food. If you can remove 99% of the processed (manufactured) food from your diet you will lose significant amounts of weight and your health will improve 99% of the time. 2. Starches, Carbohydrates and Sugars should not be ingested along with fats on the same plate at the same time. The hormone reactions that occur in the body and which transport fat into the tissues tell us this is a toxic mixture that is literally killing people. Paleo people have a lot of things right. Particularly their emphasis on healthy fat and non-processed foods. Vegans have a lot of things right. Particularly their emphasis on non-processed, real, greens, vegetables that are low on the glycemic index. Unfortunately we have the diet wars and it foments bad information.

The only thing I think matters is our evolved genes from our ancestors and adapted that to our environment. And listen to your body everyday. The global longevity study, blue zones, identify centenarians in 5 hot spots around the world and found that their diets vary, mainly plant based but semi-vegetarians except Sardinians which is not even plant based. The 3 common denominators out of 6 all have to do with emotional state and family. None go to the gym except meaningful, everyday chores that kept them active. My spouse and I are very typical of that. We're both Asians from different countries, I love vegetables, abhor blood-smelling meat since 3, while the opposite with her. We both became first vegans for the principle of non-violence since 1989, 27 years ago. Then becoming harder to lose that belly fat due to high carb consumption. She suffered a catastrophic stroke 10 years ago due to overwork and heavy sweet consumption. 2013 we discovered Ketogenic Diet (imagine Ketogenic with no meat, some doctors even said that's an oxymoron) and both went on it. she lost 40 lbs within a 3 months period, all main index improved like miracles ( A1C, triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL) while I struggled so hard with it bc I abhor the smell of eggs which we added. She slipped off it 2 times and every time if she went back on it same miracle happened. We now hardly eat grains, a lot of good oils, cheese, eggs and dark green veggi while still can stick with our Non-violence principle which make us feel meaningful. So I think diet do matter, macro-nutrients do count but it has to be tailored made to your upbringings, your sensitivity and tolerance level and most importantly your spiritual, emotional well-beings bc we a tri-state being, not just physical. The problem is not carbs or fats... Its the calories. Not a whole lot of calories in veggies, which is why we can eat so much of them.

Was anyone else tempted by that pill? Not for everyday, but just the crazy, busy week days. Then on the weekend we can relax and prepare high-quality, healthy meals. Maybe I'm just a lazy girl who refuses to eat processed foods and is sick of exhausting herself just trying to eat healthy.
Try intermittent fasting. I love it. It's healthy and gives you more time in you day. I eat my first of two (sometimes one) meals about 12 or 2 p.m. Other days I don't eat until dinner. Watch Dr. Jason Fung and Dr Valter Longo on RUclips. Your body heals and grows healthier while you're not eating. And it's soooo much easier than dieting.

But butter contains arachadonic acid. It causes inflammation and pain in the joints and body. That's why people with rheumatic diseases aren't allowed to eat it.
I even did a small study on the female body about it - period cramps got much worse while eating butter. We did the study with organic butter from grass fed cows.
Though it is true, that processed oils that are high in PUFAs are also inflammatory.

I'm 19 and 3 weeks ago I was converted into a vegan diet and the results I'm receiving are crazyy! Now, there's no going back from this lifestyle for me

I've been vegan for 3 years now, it's my diet, I feel my best, I perform well, have more energy than the guys I compete with in sports but most of my vegan life has been in lockdown, I wasn't interacting w anyone anyway and never thought veganism would affect me negatively at any moment until now, ppl are eager to interact, I have new friends, my relatives r always celebrating a birthday and I sit there on the corner not being able to join in, to participate, partake of the food, which is the element that unites us and I kinda feel frustrated and isolated. I don't know what to do
Bring your own food to pass enthusiastically. Offer restaurant suggestions that are more inclusive for you, one that at least have something you can ask to be reasonably modified, etc. My husband and I have been vegan for 7 years, and now have two vegan children. Our family has accepted it because it’s a happy part of our lives that we’ve embraced wholeheartedly and they know won’t go away. Let it continue to be joyful for you and focus on the company, not the food during your outings: you can always enjoy a yummy drink or something. It takes time but if it’s important to you, try not to be discouraged ❤

Eat only one meal a day. Eat all you can within an-hour window and only occasional junk food. That would fix the obesity crisis.
