Last year I began creating the life I have always wanted.I completely changed how I eat-no sugar,no prepared foods at all(except for almond milk),no meat,poultry,and limited fish and diary.I have been diagnosed with ADHD,CPTSD,bipolar 1,3 kinds of seizures,panic attacks,and a dissociative disorder.I have been able to come off most of the medications I used to be on,am seizure free,and have never been happier!Every day I do yoga,mediatate,limit my screen time,read,go for long walks,make time for creative play/work,journal,and have become my own best friend.Healing from trauma IS possible!What are you waiting for?
That is wonderful! My living situation currently means processed foods are constantly and readily available and the temptations are hard to resist. I feel better when I eat a low/no sugar no processed food diet as does my husband. We will keep trying.
I'm 47 and cut out sugar last year. I lost 36 lbs, am at my college weight and waist size, have stopped having headaches, my skin has reversed its aging process, the list goes on and on and on. Sugar is AWFUL.
I used to look down on drug addicts and alcoholics. I wondered why they couldn’t stop when they were such obvious health concerns. Then I asked myself how hard it would be to quit sugar.

We're not "meant" to be eating 7 teaspoons of sugar per day, that's just a recommended upper limit. The goal should be for as little as possible, even zero.
Our body can not handle 7 teaspoons of sugar per a day? That's ridiculous. People range from extremely active kids to sedentary old men. The reason sugar isn't great is the fructose piece, which must be metabolized in the liver. 7 teaspoons of sugar is about 3 teaspoons of straight fructose. That's nothing for someone who is active because the fructose will be used for liver glycogen synthesis as opposed to triglyceride synthesis.
I like that she includes processed food as so much of the problem. It's also full of weird fats and chemicals. In the USA, the food industry is SO out of control and politically powerful.

For me what works with dropping stuff is getting rid of the source. When I wanted to stop playing games[used to play 4+hr daily] I did for about 1 year, simply changed computer to worse one and didn't install any games(now play 0-2 hours per day, will probably quit again though). *With sugar, just don't have sugar and sugary sweets at home. *learn even more about bad things about sugar to become more convinced how bad it is for your. *have food prepared because if you are both hungry and craving sugar - sugar will be easier to get. after that there are two options have a 30 day challenge or go slowly with some healthy snacks to help. Challenge is harder but faster and gives some self respect.
if u r religious ? make sure 2 pray 4 the strength/will power. "Prayer ... changes things" took me 2 years of struggle 2 giv up sugar. Well worth it - my life/body health is MUCH better now
We are not supposed to have 7 teaspoons of sugar a day. We would be better having no added sugar and the natural sugar that we do eat should be in it's original fibre casing - i.e. real food.
true very true however .. to many people in the world for that. we don't have enough space for all the farms that would require. example . If everything in the world that's flavoured with strawberry flavor would contain actual strawberry's than the country of belgium alone would eat the world's supply of strawberries in under a day so we 1st need to reduce the population.

There's no difference to the body between tropical fruits, High Fructose, white sugar, brown sugar, stevia, sweet & low, Honey, maple syrup, sucralose, etc. It's all the same to your body. There's no shortcuts in nature.
In Greek, the word for diabetes is the Greek word for 'sugar'. My dad didn't know English very well so when he told people he had diabetes, he would just say 'I have sugar' and doctors understood exactly what he meant.
I would say for those below that asked, yes, sugar in fruit is okay. The reason being that fruit doesn't just contain sugar, but also contains fiber which breaks down in the body and gives energy. Processed sugar ie: dextrose, xanthan gum, etc can only break down in the liver which spikes your insulin levels and creates duh duh duh FAT. I went thirty days without sugar, except in the form of fruit, doing Whole30 and it changed my way of looking at food forever. Sugar is really the culprit for so much disease, not just obesity. The whole system needs to change in order to get sugar filled junk off the shelves (I am talking to you, Luna bars). There are so many industries that are reliant on people staying unhealthy and quite frankly, unaware... big pharma, hospitals, brand name processed food, even companies like Weight Watchers want us to stay unhealthy. So what can we do? Stay on the outside of the grocery, buy food that is colorful and rich in nutrients, watch out for sugar, and if you don't know what is on the label, don't buy it. End of rant. Fibre slows the digestion process so the sugar is released into your bloodstream more slowly. It also helps everything move through your body and stops your digestive system from being blocked up. Fibre does not break down in your body at all, it just comes right back out again (but that doesn't mean it's not important!)
Sugar in fruit is fructose and it reacts in the body just the same as all sugar. It isn't good for you! If you must eat fruit, only a few raspberries or blackberries and from time to time strawberries or blueberries! The ONLY difference between most fruit and a jelly doughnut, is that there are more nutrients in the fruit (and fiber), but sugar is sugar! Period!
Fibre does not break down to give energy - it doesn't break down at all and remains fibre all the way through. Which helps it get through. In terms of insulin etc fibre helps slow the absorption of all macronutrients. Dextrose = glucose and is generally perfectly fine. It is NOT processed in the liver. It is the only form of sugar that can be metabolised in every cell in the body. It causes no stress on the liver, and is the energy of choice for endurance athletes. Dextrose is not by definition a processed sugar. Complex starches are broken down by enzymes into dextrose/glucose (and fructose if this is present in the chain). Fructose - which is present in fruit - is the main cause of chaos in the body - it is fructose that can only be processed in the liver (unless you are an insect), and it is fructose which causes a complete shut down of the body's normal processes whilst the fructose is being dealt with.

I love how RUclips suddenly suggests a video like this for me. I went very low carbs last year aged 57 having become type 2 diabetic. Now totally reversed after a lifetime of sugar addiction. Lost 3 stone easily and have never felt better. Absolutely zero processed food, I cook and prep every day. Sharing this with my friends and family.
Yeah, it's poison. I committed to reducing my sugar intake and learning all the terminology for it and different names of additives. Unbelievable. Oh it's still tempting and giving in leads to an aftermath of feeling like being in a bad car accident. Bread was the hardest, juice was hard too. Dropped about 70 lbs so far. I'd thought I was already eating 'healthy'.
I am pushing 80 years old and consider myself reasonably logical. However, I have come to the conclusion that I am addicted or at least semi-addicted to sweets. Certain kinds of cookies and fine chocolates kick off my addiction. It is weird when you knowingly partake of something that you know is harmful. Kicking a sugar addiction is no simple problem but I believe it can be done. You certainly have to learn to say, "NO!" to your own cravings and the treats that well-meaning (usually) people put in your path. Any suggestions on how to approach kicking the habit?? Too bad there is no program like Alcoholics' Anonymous to boot the sugar habit into the gutter.
Carbs are also sugars more or less depending on the type (see nutritional values, starch it transforms in sugar, fiber becomes partially sugar, and sugar is sugar). Keep that in mind. A glass of orange juice, fresh home made it has tones of sugars, natural or not still sugar
I'm almost finished with my graphic memoir, Mom Remembers Me, of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and it worked. I tricked her off caffeine, then no prescription meds, forced her/tricked her/incentivized her to drink water, kept her away from high fructose corn syrup and other poison, because they made her mean and delusional, and kept her away from gluten.
I think part of the reason people eat crap is because they are too exhausted to cook, and too exhausted to go to the grocery store more than once a week. Fresh food rots fast unfortunately.
We wouldn't be so exhausted if we didn't eat so much crap. Although I really cant preach about it. I'm a diabetic now, only a few months in of knowing, and I'm still struggling to find the balance.
You're pointing to something very true... When we've worked hard or done things that are stressful our willpower is much lower than normal so we more easily succumb to the quick and easy. To combat this we should have healthy snacks that are ready at hand for those times like some almonds or cashews.
I just had my first soda yesterday and a mocha frapiccino, in 8-9 months. I feel horrible. When I eat sugar, I get sick. Lo and behold I have a cold today. It sucks and I feel horrible whenever I eat processed foods and added sugars. :(
Moral of the story is this. Become an educated, discerning food shopper. Read those labels. Sugar can go by other words like corn syrup. Even sugar can be extracted from plants like beets. Don't visit the mall food courts too often. Most of the processed foods is too high in fats, sugars and salts.
I started taking drinks I used to buy from restaurants and making my own without sugar, for example I used to drink Starbucks Green tea lemonade, it has way too much sugar, so I looked online at the ingredients, and make my own now, its just green tea, mint leaves and either lemon grass or lemon zest, and oh so good.

Calgary Avansino has given an first class lecture that is warning us to make changes to our lifestyles, so that we can keep the process food and sugar couple out of our dietary choices and preveny the signs and symptoms of unnecessary lifestyle illnesses or lifestyle diseases. If you don't want the younger generation in your home to eat processed or junk food, don't bring it home and don't eat it yourself. Healthy choices at home will encourage healthy choices outside of home.
I totally agree with the point being made that sugar is bad for our bodies and that we are eating way more sugar than what we should be eating on a daily basis. Obesity is a real, serious, growing problem. At the end of the talk Ms. Avansino said that if we want to stop eating bad foods then we should just stop buying it. She said that if we don’t buy it and bring it into our homes then we won’t eat it. However, in the area of the world where I live, there are many children and families that don’t have the privilege of buying produce and cooking healthy meals. Preparing nutrient filled meals takes time and resources that some individuals and families don’t have. How can we make bigger changes to our society to provide lower class families more access to healthy foods? One answer I have considered is that we need to start by getting more unhealthy products off the shelves. What if we mandated that producers take certain ingredients out of their products, or limit the amount of sugar? Maybe we are all too addicted now that we can’t make healthy, smart decisions. Habits take a long time to change and the consumption of too much sugar is defiantly a tough one. Within the last week I have realized that instead of sitting down to eat dinner with our family, my two-year-old just whines and yells “treat, treat.” I want to make healthy decisions for my children and family but it feels as though we are surrounded on all sides by bad influences, sugar, sugar and more sugar. Elimination of sugar entirely seems like a large, impossible task but what I think we need to remember is that the change doesn’t need to happen overnight. Even though the “healthy” day described by the speaker contained an unbelievable amount of sugar, it was still an improvement. When considering making changes to our habits it doesn’t need to be all or nothing. We can start small and little by little decide to make healthier decisions. Becoming more conscious of what we are consuming is the best place to start. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no added sugar for children under the age of two. After reading this, I became very disappointed in myself and the way that I am feeding my children. I try to promote healthy eating but I also let them have fruit snacks and teddy grams and many other sugary snacks. However, I don’t think all is lost. We can make changes set ourselves back on the right track, one meal at a time.
I was eating Yorkie chocolate bars that had 27g of sugar. I started with one per day and soon progressed to 6 bars per day. That’s 162g of sugar per day just for the chocolate. It doesn’t include the other food I eat daily. This went on for about 2 weeks. Yikes! When I started to have trouble doing up my trousers I knew I had to stop. I have now stopped it and don’t eat any. It’s addictive. I know from experience.
Just made lasagna from scratch with sweet potatoes instead of pasta, and an avocado, olive and basil salad on the side. I feel so good after eating like this!
12 days processed food free and almost completely sugar free. I say almost because I eat some fruit and a few pieces of 85 percent dark chocolate here and there. But I'm going strong and will keep going. For anyone wondering how to do it...healthy fats are the answer. They satiate you and prevent energy crashes.
Healthy tip: If you do something and need snacking. Get piles of nuts and seeds (sunflower seeds are the most economical), If you're in the particular corner of the World you can substitute nuts and seeds with roasted insects. Those are the best snack foods ever and there is no blood sugar spike that could stop you from working or enjoying your doing nothing.
I agree with the sugar epidemic hypothesis but I'm not completely sold that complex sugars found in fruit, nuts and vegetables needs to be accounted for. I'm trying to determine what I should eat based on this video and it seems like it is pretty much a raw meat and fish diet.
I try my best to eat no sugar at all that doesnt come from fruit or dark chocolate but oh my GOSH you have to pay attention to even pasta sauce. I make my own bread and baked goods and search diligently for organic produce and its STILL tough!
Grams are more easily visualized as a fraction of a kilo package of sugar or a standard glass. With an analysis per 100g, different foods can be compared irrespective of their intended serving size. I have no clue how much double digit count of teaspoons add up to.
I have a question. All bread is bad or just the one from stores? During the pandemic started to bake homemade bread (no sugar added) and just wondering if there is a difference between home vs store in terms of sugar.
I was a kid in the 70's. No one had sodas in their home. There was no chocolate or candy bars in the cupboard. No pizza delivery. We rarely ate breakfast. And everyone was slender.
I could easily eat a whole bag of jelly babies and then a Galaxy bar to chase it down. By the way, I like that she put the responsibility on the consumer at the end, I hate when the solution is: complain to the government

We use a natural way to decrease our sugar cravings. It's organic vegan wholefood capsules, which floods the body with fruits vegetables and berries which intern makes crave healthy food. There are chewable gummies for kids or adults who can't swallow capsules
theres a big difference between added sugar and natural sugar. raw almonds have sugar in them... but that's not a part of the 7 tsp a day you're allowed by WHO. WHO is talking about 7 tsp of Added Sugar (refined sugar).
the sugar in whole almonds, fruits, and vegetables is nothing to be afraid of. the woman didn't really make that clear. sugar from mango for example does not contribute to the 7 tsp.

WHO call the sugars you're not supposed to have a lot of "free sugars". It's not completely the same as added sugars. The sugars in home made orange juice are free sugars too.

Meadow For some people, they're healthy; for other people, they're not healthy. If you're eating lots of natural carbs (NATURAL only) and you have healthy weight, good blood tests, mental clarity, and energy, then carbs are good for YOU. But for some people (like me) too many carbs can cause obesity, high blood sugar, elevated triglycerides, lethargy, brain fog, and menstrual problems. Different people react differently; so the only way to know is to experiment with your own diet and see what makes you feel your best. But of course, processed, unnatural foods aren't healthy for anyone.
Meadow: Many ppl are wrongly taught that all carbohydrates are bad, where really it's just 1) gluten, 2) GMo's, and 3 the refined, where the outer layer of nourishment is removed, to add softness and whiteness. Your body doesn't care where the sugar comes from. It all ends up as glucose and fructose in your blood. There are good things in fruit too, but the sugar content acts in exactly the same way as it would if it came from a can of coke.
Tessa Avonlea Not true because your body has to break down the fiber along with the sugars in fruits and that means it's slowly digested and the sugars from the fruit and veggies trickle in to your body at a slow and healthy rate that your body can handle. Fruit juice stripped of the fiber or a can of coke is not digested and released slowly, it very quickly reaches your cells causing insulin resistance.
Both of you are correct. Once digested, it's the same glucose and fructose, and will therefore follow the same metabolic pathways. Glucose can be immediately taken up by most of the body's tissues. No problems there. Fructose, however, is metabolized primarily in the liver and once liver glycogen is replenished, it will be converted into triglycerides which end up in your blood. Fructose metabolism in the liver is very similar to alcohol metabolism, and high intakes of sugar (and therefore fructose) can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fiber does slow down digestion, which is why is it is indeed better to eat a fruit than drink fruit juice. The rate at which the liver is forced to metabolize the fructose is reduced. Easier on the liver, and less triglyceride synthesis.
Blu You don't break fiber down to blood sugar, but fiber is absolutely an important component of the health of your digestive system. The simplest benefit is that fiber promotes the movement of food through your digestive system. But once that fiber gets to your colon, it becomes food for the bacteria that live there. This bacteria is important for not just the health of your digestive system but your overall health as well, including your immune system. When the bacteria ferment the fiber, healthy short chain fatty acids are released and absorbed into your blood.
Point 4 that she makes to use your leftovers is so important. In India, because we have seen tough times, there is a tendency to not throw away the food as far as possible. There even are some recipes that are made with leftover food. In many Western TV shows, I see the performers throw away food just like that. It bugs me to no end. Such a waste

the tomato soup example isn't totally fair because some of the sugar will be from the tomatoes, and there is some fibre in it. the 7 teaspoons per day she's talking about is a recommended added figure. but also to be fair to her the labels don't show what sugar is indigenous to the fruit (or vegetable), it just gives an overall figure, so it's very difficult to work out what is added or not
daveeeed the ingredients list will tell you if there's added sugar. If it's not listed then it's not there.... But then there's like 52 different names for it.
Just to reiterate. The point I was making which is true, is that on a can of Tomato Soup it does NOT give ADDED sugar. It gives TOTAL sugars. Therefore to work out ADDED sugar you would have to estimate, because some of the total sugar is in the tomatoes themselves (which is totally fine), and shouldn't be taken into account in her demonstration of added sugar in those bags. But as I said, to be fair to her, it doesn't say the total sugar, so to some extent it is hard to work out the added sugar. And her 7 teaspoons that she says (correctly) that you should have no more per day of - that is ADDED sugar, not what sugar is in the vegetables themselves, which is fine, because there will be some fibre etc. This is Dr Lustig's point, author of 'Fat Chance.' And people have a fat chance of being able to work out added sugar, when the industry makes it hard for people. Yogurt is another good example. In fruit yogurt, it gives total sugars. It will not say what proportion are from the milk (perfectly fine), what proportion is from the fruit, and finally what proportion is added. That is a tough example of working out added sugar. that was my point.

As all experts would tell added sugar is worse than sugar contained in natural unprocessed food. But first tomato soup in a can IS PROCESSED. If you want to count all sugar that has traces of natural food then all sugar is fine. Look that corn syrup came from corn. Second the it is not "totally fine" it is better because it goes to your organism more slowly and overwhelms it less, but it is still bad after 7 teaspoons. For no health issues from sugar at all it's best to have less than 7 and from natural food.

Last year I began creating the life I have always wanted.I completely changed how I eat-no sugar,no prepared foods at all(except for almond milk),no meat,poultry,and limited fish and diary.I have been diagnosed with ADHD,CPTSD,bipolar 1,3 kinds of seizures,panic attacks,and a dissociative disorder.I have been able to come off most of the medications I used to be on,am seizure free,and have never been happier!Every day I do yoga,mediatate,limit my screen time,read,go for long walks,make time for creative play/work,journal,and have become my own best friend.Healing from trauma IS possible!What are you waiting for?

That is wonderful! My living situation currently means processed foods are constantly and readily available and the temptations are hard to resist. I feel better when I eat a low/no sugar no processed food diet as does my husband. We will keep trying.

I'm 47 and cut out sugar last year. I lost 36 lbs, am at my college weight and waist size, have stopped having headaches, my skin has reversed its aging process, the list goes on and on and on. Sugar is AWFUL.

The reason sugar isn't great is the fructose piece, which must be metabolized in the liver. 7 teaspoons of sugar is about 3 teaspoons of straight fructose. That's nothing for someone who is active because the fructose will be used for liver glycogen synthesis as opposed to triglyceride synthesis.

For me what works with dropping stuff is getting rid of the source. When I wanted to stop playing games[used to play 4+hr daily] I did for about 1 year, simply changed computer to worse one and didn't install any games(now play 0-2 hours per day, will probably quit again though).
*With sugar, just don't have sugar and sugary sweets at home.
*learn even more about bad things about sugar to become more convinced how bad it is for your.
*have food prepared because if you are both hungry and craving sugar - sugar will be easier to get.
after that there are two options have a 30 day challenge or go slowly with some healthy snacks to help.
Challenge is harder but faster and gives some self respect.

Sweetness is sweetness to the body. So all sugars are to be avoided whenever possible. You don't need it. There's no difference to the body between tropical fruits, High Fructose, white sugar, brown sugar, stevia, sweet & low, Honey, maple syrup, sucralose, etc. It's all the same to your body.

In Greek, the word for diabetes is the Greek word for 'sugar'. My dad didn't know English very well so when he told people he had diabetes, he would just say 'I have sugar' and doctors understood exactly what he meant.

I would say for those below that asked, yes, sugar in fruit is okay. The reason being that fruit doesn't just contain sugar, but also contains fiber which breaks down in the body and gives energy. Processed sugar ie: dextrose, xanthan gum, etc can only break down in the liver which spikes your insulin levels and creates duh duh duh FAT. I went thirty days without sugar, except in the form of fruit, doing Whole30 and it changed my way of looking at food forever. Sugar is really the culprit for so much disease, not just obesity. The whole system needs to change in order to get sugar filled junk off the shelves (I am talking to you, Luna bars). There are so many industries that are reliant on people staying unhealthy and quite frankly, unaware... big pharma, hospitals, brand name processed food, even companies like Weight Watchers want us to stay unhealthy. So what can we do? Stay on the outside of the grocery, buy food that is colorful and rich in nutrients, watch out for sugar, and if you don't know what is on the label, don't buy it.

Fiber does not 'break down in the body and give energy.'
Fibre slows the digestion process so the sugar is released into your bloodstream more slowly. It also helps everything move through your body and stops your digestive system from being blocked up. Fibre does not break down in your body at all, it just comes right back out again (but that doesn't mean it's not important!)

Sugar in fruit is fructose and it reacts in the body just the same as all sugar. It isn't good for you! If you must eat fruit, only a few raspberries or blackberries and from time to time strawberries or blueberries! The ONLY difference between most fruit and a jelly doughnut, is that there are more nutrients in the fruit (and fiber), but sugar is sugar! Period!
Fibre does not break down to give energy - it doesn't break down at all and remains fibre all the way through. Which helps it get through. In terms of insulin etc fibre helps slow the absorption of all macronutrients.
Dextrose = glucose and is generally perfectly fine. It is NOT processed in the liver. It is the only form of sugar that can be metabolised in every cell in the body. It causes no stress on the liver, and is the energy of choice for endurance athletes. Dextrose is not by definition a processed sugar. Complex starches are broken down by enzymes into dextrose/glucose (and fructose if this is present in the chain).
Fructose - which is present in fruit - is the main cause of chaos in the body - it is fructose that can only be processed in the liver (unless you are an insect), and it is fructose which causes a complete shut down of the body's normal processes whilst the fructose is being dealt with.

Yeah, it's poison. I committed to reducing my sugar intake and learning all the terminology for it and different names of additives. Unbelievable. Oh it's still tempting and giving in leads to an aftermath of feeling like being in a bad car accident. Bread was the hardest, juice was hard too. Dropped about 70 lbs so far. I'd thought I was already eating 'healthy'.
I make my own 100% whole grain bread, sometimes with rye or spelt flours. Tastes great and nutritious
I am pushing 80 years old and consider myself reasonably logical. However, I have come to the conclusion that I am addicted or at least semi-addicted to sweets. Certain kinds of cookies and fine chocolates kick off my addiction. It is weird when you knowingly partake of something that you know is harmful. Kicking a sugar addiction is no simple problem but I believe it can be done. You certainly have to learn to say, "NO!" to your own cravings and the treats that well-meaning (usually) people put in your path. Any suggestions on how to approach kicking the habit?? Too bad there is no program like Alcoholics' Anonymous to boot the sugar habit into the gutter.
Carbs are also sugars more or less depending on the type (see nutritional values, starch it transforms in sugar, fiber becomes partially sugar, and sugar is sugar). Keep that in mind. A glass of orange juice, fresh home made it has tones of sugars, natural or not still sugar

I'm almost finished with my graphic memoir, Mom Remembers Me, of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and it worked. I tricked her off caffeine, then no prescription meds, forced her/tricked her/incentivized her to drink water, kept her away from high fructose corn syrup and other poison, because they made her mean and delusional, and kept her away from gluten.

You're pointing to something very true... When we've worked hard or done things that are stressful our willpower is much lower than normal so we more easily succumb to the quick and easy. To combat this we should have healthy snacks that are ready at hand for those times like some almonds or cashews.

I just had my first soda yesterday and a mocha frapiccino, in 8-9 months. I feel horrible. When I eat sugar, I get sick. Lo and behold I have a cold today. It sucks and I feel horrible whenever I eat processed foods and added sugars. :(
Then there's the processed oils and carbs that are also making us sick. Our illnesses ain't only about sugar.
Moral of the story is this. Become an educated, discerning food shopper. Read those labels. Sugar can go by other words like corn syrup. Even sugar can be extracted from plants like beets. Don't visit the mall food courts too often. Most of the processed foods is too high in fats, sugars and salts.

I started taking drinks I used to buy from restaurants and making my own without sugar, for example I used to drink Starbucks Green tea lemonade, it has way too much sugar, so I looked online at the ingredients, and make my own now, its just green tea, mint leaves and either lemon grass or lemon zest, and oh so good.

Also, old fruit-sorts differ(ed) from new, hybridized ones, which are modified to grow MUCH more sugar, didn't you notice the shift? I feel nausea at the new fruit, don't want them (at least not when I am good and off my sugar addiction). This is because of liver function problems, which also the majority people suffer from silently, more or less so. I like the old, sourly fruits. They are good, but we're still too stressed today to tolerate them well.

Calgary Avansino has given an first class lecture that is warning us to make changes to our lifestyles, so that we can keep the process food and sugar couple out of our dietary choices and preveny the signs and symptoms of unnecessary lifestyle illnesses or lifestyle diseases. If you don't want the younger generation in your home to eat processed or junk food, don't bring it home and don't eat it yourself. Healthy choices at home will encourage healthy choices outside of home.

I totally agree with the point being made that sugar is bad for our bodies and that we are eating way more sugar than what we should be eating on a daily basis. Obesity is a real, serious, growing problem. At the end of the talk Ms. Avansino said that if we want to stop eating bad foods then we should just stop buying it. She said that if we don’t buy it and bring it into our homes then we won’t eat it. However, in the area of the world where I live, there are many children and families that don’t have the privilege of buying produce and cooking healthy meals. Preparing nutrient filled meals takes time and resources that some individuals and families don’t have. How can we make bigger changes to our society to provide lower class families more access to healthy foods?
One answer I have considered is that we need to start by getting more unhealthy products off the shelves. What if we mandated that producers take certain ingredients out of their products, or limit the amount of sugar? Maybe we are all too addicted now that we can’t make healthy, smart decisions. Habits take a long time to change and the consumption of too much sugar is defiantly a tough one. Within the last week I have realized that instead of sitting down to eat dinner with our family, my two-year-old just whines and yells “treat, treat.” I want to make healthy decisions for my children and family but it feels as though we are surrounded on all sides by bad influences, sugar, sugar and more sugar.
Elimination of sugar entirely seems like a large, impossible task but what I think we need to remember is that the change doesn’t need to happen overnight. Even though the “healthy” day described by the speaker contained an unbelievable amount of sugar, it was still an improvement.
When considering making changes to our habits it doesn’t need to be all or nothing. We can start small and little by little decide to make healthier decisions. Becoming more conscious of what we are consuming is the best place to start.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no added sugar for children under the age of two. After reading this, I became very disappointed in myself and the way that I am feeding my children. I try to promote healthy eating but I also let them have fruit snacks and teddy grams and many other sugary snacks. However, I don’t think all is lost. We can make changes set ourselves back on the right track, one meal at a time.

I asked my cardiologist how he stays slim and healthy. He said "cut out all added sugars, and keep moving."
I was eating Yorkie chocolate bars that had 27g of sugar. I started with one per day and soon progressed to 6 bars per day. That’s 162g of sugar per day just for the chocolate. It doesn’t include the other food I eat daily. This went on for about 2 weeks. Yikes! When I started to have trouble doing up my trousers I knew I had to stop. I have now stopped it and don’t eat any. It’s addictive. I know from experience.

But I'm going strong and will keep going. For anyone wondering how to do it...healthy fats are the answer. They satiate you and prevent energy crashes.

Healthy tip: If you do something and need snacking. Get piles of nuts and seeds (sunflower seeds are the most economical), If you're in the particular corner of the World you can substitute nuts and seeds with roasted insects. Those are the best snack foods ever and there is no blood sugar spike that could stop you from working or enjoying your doing nothing.
I agree with the sugar epidemic hypothesis but I'm not completely sold that complex sugars found in fruit, nuts and vegetables needs to be accounted for. I'm trying to determine what I should eat based on this video and it seems like it is pretty much a raw meat and fish diet.

I try my best to eat no sugar at all that doesnt come from fruit or dark chocolate but oh my GOSH you have to pay attention to even pasta sauce. I make my own bread and baked goods and search diligently for organic produce and its STILL tough!

I have a question. All bread is bad or just the one from stores? During the pandemic started to bake homemade bread (no sugar added) and just wondering if there is a difference between home vs store in terms of sugar.
Most breads are bad. The "Ezekial" bread is about the only low-sugar brand out there...although it spoils quickly unless kept frozen.
I was a kid in the 70's. No one had sodas in their home. There was no chocolate or candy bars in the cupboard. No pizza delivery. We rarely ate breakfast. And everyone was slender.

No. I think the teaspoons of sugar idea is better as it’s more a visual thing rather than being about metric or imperial measures.
We use a natural way to decrease our sugar cravings. It's organic vegan wholefood capsules, which floods the body with fruits vegetables and berries which intern makes crave healthy food. There are chewable gummies for kids or adults who can't swallow capsules
theres a big difference between added sugar and natural sugar. raw almonds have sugar in them... but that's not a part of the 7 tsp a day you're allowed by WHO. WHO is talking about 7 tsp of Added Sugar (refined sugar).
the sugar in whole almonds, fruits, and vegetables is nothing to be afraid of. the woman didn't really make that clear. sugar from mango for example does not contribute to the 7 tsp.

WHO call the sugars you're not supposed to have a lot of "free sugars". It's not completely the same as added sugars. The sugars in home made orange juice are free sugars too.

Your body doesn't care where the sugar comes from. It all ends up as glucose and fructose in your blood. There are good things in fruit too, but the sugar content acts in exactly the same way as it would if it came from a can of coke.
Tessa Avonlea Not true because your body has to break down the fiber along with the sugars in fruits and that means it's slowly digested and the sugars from the fruit and veggies trickle in to your body at a slow and healthy rate that your body can handle. Fruit juice stripped of the fiber or a can of coke is not digested and released slowly, it very quickly reaches your cells causing insulin resistance.
Both of you are correct. Once digested, it's the same glucose and fructose, and will therefore follow the same metabolic pathways. Glucose can be immediately taken up by most of the body's tissues. No problems there. Fructose, however, is metabolized primarily in the liver and once liver glycogen is replenished, it will be converted into triglycerides which end up in your blood. Fructose metabolism in the liver is very similar to alcohol metabolism, and high intakes of sugar (and therefore fructose) can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fiber does slow down digestion, which is why is it is indeed better to eat a fruit than drink fruit juice. The rate at which the liver is forced to metabolize the fructose is reduced. Point 4 that she makes to use your leftovers is so important. In India, because we have seen tough times, there is a tendency to not throw away the food as far as possible. There even are some recipes that are made with leftover food.

the tomato soup example isn't totally fair because some of the sugar will be from the tomatoes, and there is some fibre in it. the 7 teaspoons per day she's talking about is a recommended added figure. but also to be fair to her the labels don't show what sugar is indigenous to the fruit (or vegetable), it just gives an overall figure, so it's very difficult to work out what is added or not
daveeeed the ingredients list will tell you if there's added sugar. If it's not listed then it's not there.... But then there's like 52 different names for it.
Just to reiterate. The point I was making which is true, is that on a can of Tomato Soup it does NOT give ADDED sugar. It gives TOTAL sugars. Therefore to work out ADDED sugar you would have to estimate, because some of the total sugar is in the tomatoes themselves (which is totally fine), and shouldn't be taken into account in her demonstration of added sugar in those bags. But as I said, to be fair to her, it doesn't say the total sugar, so to some extent it is hard to work out the added sugar. And her 7 teaspoons that she says (correctly) that you should have no more per day of - that is ADDED sugar, not what sugar is in the vegetables themselves, which is fine, because there will be some fibre etc. This is Dr Lustig's point, author of 'Fat Chance.' And people have a fat chance of being able to work out added sugar, when the industry makes it hard for people. Yogurt is another good example. In fruit yogurt, it gives total sugars. It will not say what proportion are from the milk (perfectly fine), what proportion is from the fruit, and finally what proportion is added. That is a tough example of working out added sugar. that was my point.

If you want to count all sugar that has traces of natural food then all sugar is fine. Look that corn syrup came from corn.
Second the it is not "totally fine" it is better because it goes to your organism more slowly and overwhelms it less, but it is still bad after 7 teaspoons.
For no health issues from sugar at all it's best to have less than 7 and from natural food.
