I really agree with your thoughts Nicola! I made the switch from ABRSM to MTB several years ago and both my students and I really prefer it. I particularly appreciate the flexibility with regards the repertoire. Like you I really the technical exercises! I also totally agree about the quality of the feedback, it's typically much better than the other boards.

It’s interesting to hear about MTB. It sounds refreshing. The only thing I see a bit pointless is the recorded oral test, kind of kills the purpose. It’s like recording sight-reading. I do ABRSM with my students but starting to hate them. The marking is very inconsistent. A teacher submitted the same exam twice to see what happens. And there were 19 points difference between the two markings of the same recording. Although Abrsm has a wider syllabus now too where free choice can be pop or film music, many pieces still are very uninspiring. In certain grades all B pieces had lots of octaves which made it impossible to pick one with small hand students. I think there are always easier and harder pieces across all exam board grades. Mainly because difficulty is not 100% objective and also to have something harder for very driven students.

Definitely there is variance within grades, there’s no such thing as the same “level” anyway. What I was saying was just that I think there’s a tad more in MTB from my experience. Not a deal breaker for me.
I get what you mean about the aural too, I kind of thought that myself. But after experiencing students preparing for it and doing the exam, I have found value in it.

Hey there, I'm an MTB piano examiner. Great to hear you like the feedback! We do try to weigh more towards the positive aspects of a performance with areas to be improved framed in a constructive way. From "the other side" it's great hearing such a variety of playing in both Performance and Practical formats of the exams. I've learnt a great deal as a teacher from being an examiner too. Love the channel, keep up the good work!

That’s lovely to hear! Keep up the great work on the examining side! I really appreciate the student-centred, positive work that you’re doing. ❤️

Would you say MTB are as strict as ABRSM when marking?

    • @justapiano88

It's hard to say as the marking criteria are quite different in some ways. And it always depends on the examiner's point of view. I think where MTB try to set themselves apart from ABRSM is that the comments and feedback are much more constructive and in easy to understand language as Nicola pointed out. Also, each exam is marked by an instrumental specialist (i.e. piano exams marked by piano specialist, violin exam by a violin specialist etc). I have had bad experiences with my students in both ABRSM and Trinity and continue to hear negatives about both of "the big two". MTB offers a great alternative for the same outcome of qualification. So if you've not tried it, it's worth giving it a go especially at beginner level

Hi what do you think about the MTB performance exams? Where the student plays 4 - 5 pieces only

Haven’t tried them so I can’t really comment. I like the idea, though!
