I'm from the Philippines, a tropical country. We have no need to wear mittens but our dialysis patients needs them because it's cold inside the dialysis centers. Thus, I have to learn to make these mittens when my brother in law requested after I gave him a beanie hat for his birthday. He was so glad for the hat to keep his head warm during his dialysis sessions. Now to keep his fingers from freezing. Thank you, Roxanne, as always, you have guided me to be more confident in knitting projects I thought I could never do. May I be able to make more but this time mittens to give to more dialysis patients. More power to your channel. INFINITE THUMBS UP!!!
Well I thought, "That's logical", so I immediately made a pair for my daughter. "Wow", she said, "Without a pattern...that's impressive." "No silly, that's Roxanne!"
That is, by FAR, the BEST explanation I’ve ever heard for M1R and M1Lthat I’ve ever seen! This whole video was actually very helpful!!! Thanks so much!
I just finished my first mitt, and it fits so perfectly! I’m in love. This was my first time knitting with a recipe instead of a pattern. I’m still amazed that I took my measurements and gauge and turned them into a finished object that fits! Also, first time making gloves of any kind. Roxanne, thanks for another excellent video tutorial! Your videos are always so informative and helpful.
These "knit without a pattern" videos are among my favorite videos! I love them because then I'm free to "design" my own. So fun, thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us!
Dear Roxanne, I love your tutorials. You explain it so well, that even when my language is not english I understanding it. Thank...... Netti from Denmark
Stellar! After hunting around Ravelry for the better part of an hour looking for mitts I liked that used the yarn weight and needle size I have on hand, I tripped across this video. I'd tried to do this on my own, but was just using guesswork to figure out stitch counts, etc. This was so incredibly helpful at exactly the right time. Bless you for sharing this knowledge!!
I love how you broke this down into sections. The math demo is very useful. The schematic used for the increases, leaving space to write in the plain rows made sense. Thanks for a great instructional video.
Great video, as always. Thank you! I'd just like to point out that centimeters are SO much easier to calculate with than inches. Start with say a 20 cm (8") hand. Yarn that gives you 22 stiches per 10cm (4") gives you 2.2 stitches per cm. 2.2 x 20 cm gives you the number of stitches you need: 44. Even if you're used to inches, you can buy a tape measure that has both, and use the cm side to calculate with. :)
@@ramelajeridian6245 The measurements I gave are for anyone with a palm that measures 20 cm in circumference. Before starting, measure the hand for which you're planning to knit the mitts, and make a swatch to find out how many stitches per 10cm your yarn will give you. By the way, I don't knit a thumb on my mitts, I simply leave a slot for the thumb -- because I want to leave my thumbs free, and also I want to be able to easily push the mitts up my wrists in order to wash my hands.
This sounds like a fingerless gloves approach for the absolutely precise knitter who needs to have every stitch in place. I was just looking for light tips but stumbled across this video which sounds like it was from a particularly precise knit guild.
So glad to have this video. We recommended the hat video to our knitting guild in December. Plans are to talk about mitten knitting in January. Now there’s another video to recommend!!! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Everything is broken down to make it easy to understand. I just started knitting a couple of months ago, and I love the way you explain in detail the how and why. Best knitting channel !
You are such a good teacher. As a relative beginner in the knitting craft, it is very rewarding to be able to figure out the pattern for yarn I really like, and see how perfect the end result is. Thank you!
Thank you for being such an expert teacher. You have just cleared up so many areas I was struggling with while teaching myself to make mittens. Now that I know how to plan and work out stitch numbers, I will never use the "hit and miss" method again. Mittens = demystified ! YEAY!!!
Thank you madam, you explained so nicely & briefly there is nothing to ask you more. To be honest I am taking the cable stitched design from Pinterest but fallowing you to finish my grand daughter’s mittens. I am really glad after finishing the project. Now thinking to make another pair after taking live measurement from any one. Again thanking you. 👍🙏
this is the perfect video! i'm a beginner and watched some other videos that use different yarn weights/needles than i have and was debating what i wanted to do and saw this in the recommended. the math section is described perfectly for me to understand, can't wait to get started!
Thank you for making this tutorial! The best fitting socks I've made were done using your sock lessons, and I'm excited to try this for fingerless mitts, and hopefully to avoid those pesky gaps in the gussets.
La felicito, Excelente y detallada explicación. Muchos le tenemos miedo a hacer calculos o muestras y es realmente muy util ya que nos evitar tejer y destejer y perder tiempo. Me tendré que actualizar con sus videos// so great and so detailed explanation. Many people are afraid of making maths and gauges but it's really helpful for it prevents of knitting and then having to un-knit the work and and therefore waste time. I'll catch up on your playlist and tutorials.
Very clear tutorial, I love your knitting math! I knit my fingerless mittens top down so I decrease for the thumb gusset rather than increase. Simply because I prefer decreasing to increasing. ;)
Hi Roxanne: I absolutely loved this video and found myself rewinding several times to be certain I listened well. And learned the most from it. Thank you. Happy Knitting in 2021.
What perfect timing for you to produce this video! A friend had just inspired me to look at making mittens but I didn't have a pattern. I'm definitely going to give these a go. Your explanations are so clear I feel this is totally within my grasp. Thank you!
Brilliant video. Most memorable instructions I have come across for left leaning and right leaning increases. Really helpful to have this meticulous analysis of how the mitt is constructed and I’m really looking forward to any future videos you may be doing on left and right mittens. Thank you so much. I wish you a very happy 2021. 🙏🏻❤️
This year I made my first pair of fingerless mittens, with rib+ mock cable rib panel, and with no pattern! I have never been able to find a right pattern for myself so I'm used to customizing, but this one was slightly more challenging, I loved it! Thank you for the video, this is really helpful and I'll have it for the next time I make another pair!
Yes,Yes,Yes I 'm inspired! I do love fingerless mitts. Afraid of doing thumb gusset!!! So want to make some for gifts. This has inspired me to try again!!! Plan on checking your hat tutorial someone mentioned. Three times I made a hat only to finish either oversized or too small.Though I follow the exact instructions. Don't know why? Thank you for sharing😊
Again I learned something new from you. I always have gaps when making fingerless mitts. Now I won't have them anymore. It was so bad that I was knitting them flat and seaming the sides without a thumb, just a hole for the thumb.
Thanks Roxanne. This is absolutely fantastic. I will link it to my friend Sophie, I am sure she will love it. Just as good and clear as your video on how to knit a hat without a pattern.
I found like 5 balls of sock/fingering yarn and they're pretty soft. Thought I could make em into gloves but all the knit patterns I saw were incredibly complicated since there were different stitch counts that I HAD to substitute into my version and that was super hard😭 I'll just use this version thank you❤
That was great. The concept of the cylinders circumstances was something that I came in understanding. But the approach taken on planning before construction is something I will take and run with. Thank you for the insightful process. I will definitely revisit this video.
I love this! Thank you! I've been trying to make my own mitts for a while lately because my gauge is always off or my yarn isn't quite right for the patterns I find. I've been working off of a one-page guide "a mitten is shaped like a hand" from Ultimate Mittens by Robin Hansen, combined with the Tin Can Knits simple mitten that has a variety of yarn weight directions. I've ripped back several half done mitts so far because I hadn't got it quite right. This is much clearer & much appreciated!!
Happy New Year Roxanne...Thanks for another practical and in depth knitting demonstration. You always include so much information about little things that help make projects turn out better...like picking up two extra stitches in the gap when starting the thumb extension and then decreasing them together with the last and first stitches on the gussett. Have you ever knit both items at the same time. I started doing that a while ago with smaller items like socks and mittens and I find that it helps me finish both items and have them tensioned the same. It was a bit of an organizational leap for me but not too difficult once I got the hang of it. Certainly not for everyone ... but a nice quiet adventure.
I have tried knitting 2aat, but I prefer one at a time. I have occasionally done two at a time, but on separate needles, so that I could remember what I was doing at a particularly tricky part, and then repeat it. Some people find it helps them finish the project, because both are done at the same time, but for me, it always feels like I'm going super slow, so I prefer one at a time. :-)
WOW!! This Is So Awesome!! This Sure Helps A lot,...I Actually Understand How This Formula Works,.. Pretty Neat,... Thank You,. You Are And Awesome Teacher....😁❤️🤣😊💞❤️💕💜👏👏

I wish you can maybe show this on this video.
I loved the tutorial. I was wondering if you need to wash the swatch before getting gauge. I didn’t hear any mention of washing and blocking after the fake swatch. Thank you

I love this type of tutorials. As a German I use centimeters, but I can follow your instructions perfectly. Thanks and greetings from Germany.
This video along with the video about ease were exactly what I needed "draft" a pattern for a pair of fingerless mitts. Thanks so much Roxanne!
YOU are definitely a gifted teacher, with simple, straightforward directions . Thank you for sharing!

Thanks so much. I used your how to make a hat instructions and it worked up beautifully... I’ll definitely give the gloves a go too.

Thank you so much 😍 it helped me a lot🥳 I was about to go crazy🤭 trying to find out the how to....great stash busting!😃😍

Thanks It's the tutorial and explana I neeed and was looking for. So clear and make understanble!

Thank you Roxanne ! just ever so Wonderful ! Roxanne , as a request for the future - I have come across a pattern that calls for a Bobble Bind Off . I would so appreciate a tutorial from you on this . I am stumped ! All the best to you, marcia
I have no idea what a bobble bind off would be! That's not a standard term by any means. In order to figure it out, I'd need context, like seeing what the project was (pattern photo), and any information the pattern might include related to the bind off. Often something like this would be included in the list of technique/stitch patterns prior to the cast on instructions.
HI Roxanne ! Sorry to get back so late in replying to you. This bobble bind off is on Joji Locatelli's ' Julie's Wrap ' . ( Ravelry ) There is a technique section covering this but, it seems many have had difficulty getting the hang of it at first. I am still stumped. Would you be able to help knowing these particulars? . Again - I thank you for answering back with your help and advice. marcia
Brilliant !
Love your video
Brilliant!!!! Thank you 😊
I loved this tutorial, thanks!!!
Very nice video 👍😊
I do my mittens or gloves like I do socks, two at a time. I find I'm just much more consistent when I do this.
Ty this tutorial is very helpful . I was wondering because I got a little confused on the thumb for the gusset. How do you know how many increases you need for the thumb like you said on your glove you needed 12 how did you get that number?
It's in the section on doing the calculations. Just after the 10 min mark.
Love the mitts. Just got my copy of Danish night sweaters, and like you, I find it fascinating. But in spite of her photos, diagrams, and clear instructions, I am having trouble with traveling stitches. Do you have a tutorial on that?
Excellent ❣️ Thank you!
Did you make the video on making a fingerless mitt with a pattern on the top?
