If you are talking about the large black wire that connects to the EIS (ignition switch) that wire goes to the gear stick. As soon as you turn the ignition ON, it releases the gear stick so you can change gears.
@Proud Papa - Hi Greg. Yes it should work as long as the EIS is an FBS3 generation. After 2014 Mercedes changed their 3rd generation (FBS3) to fourth generation (FBS4) system. FBS4 systems, at the moment can be programmed by Mercedes only. I hope this helps.

@Kevin Pinson When you clone the EIS the original keys will work. No need to program new key(s). The programmer is called "Xhorse VVDI Prog". You can search google. With regards to the adapters you can do all this without them, but you'll have to solder cables that come with the programmer to the EIS. The programmer has wiring diagrams as to where to solder and what colour cable. I hope this makes sense & helps.

So u just made him a new key fob. How did u know the ignition switch was bad.? I have the same issue my e500 I went to the gas station and remote was working fine . Mind you I dropped it 2x and the remote stopped working left me stranded and had my car towed back home. I've had same issue in the past where my remote got soaked in water and stopped working . Called a key reprogram and he made me a new key and it started right up.

I did not do the diagnosis on the EIS, a garage did that and they called me to clone a new one. As far as your key is concern, if you drop it in water what you should do is clean it with alcohol like ISOPROPANOL or similar. This is to get your remote back and working again. As far as the car not starting, while you dropped the key, the transponder must of been damaged or came lose from the board. In this case you need to open the key fob and inspect it. Be careful while opening not to lose anything that came lose because you might be able to solder it back to the board.*

In your case, your key was broken since you dropped it but that doesn't mean, you needed a new key. Maybe the coil was disconnected from the PCB board from the drop and all you had to do is solder it back. As far as soaking the key all you had to do is dry it as quickly as possible, then clean the PCB board with alcohol (Isopropanol alcohol or similar).

@@ChillRighty Hi. Just seen your comment. If the ignition does not turn while on the car, there are two possible problems. 1. The key has lost it's data or gone wrong and 2. the ignition switch (EIS) has gone wrong.
I had problem with EIS, but once I took it out, took it apart, clean those electrical contacts and connectors, and put it back together, the problem went away. I do believe much of these problems arise from corrosion of electric contacts.

@@juanrendon3639 Hi. You need to get the information from the Engine ECU. From there you can generate EIS file. You will also need the SSID which you can get from any of the keys assuming that you do have a key.

Have you tried to change the normal eis to KEYLESS GO one? For example if i write EEPROM and FLASH to w209 eis but with different part number
