I read that Mr Dumble said the ratio or in this case level control is the most important control. He said it's about the overdrive and how much your letting back into the circuit.

Rit Goose. In a Fender design there is a wire connecting the treble ground lug to the bass pot input n wiper. Alex. Used resistors of high value. Relayed to lower the impedance an give a much larger preamp signal. Ive tweaked this circuit non stop for 23 years. Amazing what u can do with tube electronics

Most settings on a D-style amp are between 12 and 2 o'clock. I've been playing Fuchs Amps for a very long time. I've owned 4 of them. 2 Fuchs modded Fenders, a modded Traynor, and an ODS 50/100W SLX Hand Tuned. The first volume determines everything in the following two gains. OD in and OD out. I used to keep the first volume on the amp too low. Now, I keep it at about 11 o'clock to feed the OD circuit properly. That is the way cascading gain stages work. The first volume is critical.

Hats off for 'buy you a chevrolet'. Used to do that in my band years ago, loved the riff. The singer, wit he is, would ask audience members if anyone had just bought a new car and would substitute that as a dedication. So we'd get 'buy you a vauxhall astra' or similar.... Good times

Well done! I enjoyed your explanations to how your clean settings impacts your OD. Yes, very true and similar to the old Mesa Mark Series amps. Your OD setting explanation was spot on as well. A small amount of gain does go a long way, adding your tone bypass, or boost will get you where you want to go, but you do need to be patient with dialing in your sound/tone. These style amps are not “plug and play”. They are amazing amps.
I have a FUCHS 50Watt ODS (Fender Bassman Conversion) with a Celestion G12-65 (Rola) and it sounds amazing. My 2nd choice is an older EVM-12L, but I’m currently enjoying the Celestion and it’s much lighter weight. Thanks again for your well documented video! Cheers! 😎

I just picked up a Fuchs 50Watt ODS conversion myself! I find that there's always tweaks but it's not terribly hard to dial in a good sound. I had a lot more trouble trying to dial in my Mesa/Boogie .50 Caliber. This video helped me realize that getting that master up to at least half really helps bring out the overtones in the clean sound.

Very nice demo of clean settings, was really hoping to hear how that blond head would sound with the gain cranked up (understand that is not your "sound" but would have loved to hear what the amp is capable of). Do you have some other video of a more aggressive setup for a Dumble style amp? thanks

    Hi mate,
Glad to see another guy from the UK using Dumble style amps. I have two, both made by DWJ here in the UK. One is a 50w ODS copy the other is DWJ’s take on a 50w Bluesmaster. I find it interesting because the differences between my amps are similar to what you have with yours.
I picked up a C Lator by Ceriatone this week and I think it makes the amp what it’s meant to be. The bluesmaster which can be an unruly beast just sparkles a little more and because of the extra gain stage it’s sound is smoothed out a little.
Thanks for the content, please keep posting stuff like this.

Nice video for setting up what can be a tricky amp to set up. I think most people run the first volume way too high, and generally they run the ods with WAY too much gain. It just sounds fuzzy and loses all of the articulation. In my opinion, the overdrive channel should be glassy, clear and smooth, almost like a very nice sustained clean sound that is rich with harmonics and has a nice sag to it. It should not be fuzzy or fizzy in any way. Most people are really used to that fuzzy sound from overdrive if they have played all of their life with a lot more gain, and when you play these types of amps, they're all of a sudden extremely revealing and fast. This can be off putting and the amp can be hard to play, but if you play well through it, it's going to sound absolutely fantastic, and everything that you play is going to be heard. I run the first volume pretty low about 3.5 - 4 on the dial but no more, and this keeps things smooth and doesn't allow any fuzz. As you say, the EQ and all of that is definitely different on every amp. My presence does nothing until about 3 o clock, for example. My amp also has a gain trimmer on the back that I set at about 10-11 o'clock.

Great video Ramon! I agree totally with you, the amp with guitar is a full system. I had an EV in my Welagen ODS but last year I changed it to a Celestion g12-150 watt speaker. It handles the 100 watts but its softer and makes the top end smoother compared to the EV! Great how you talked about the ratio between the clean channel and od channel. I have mine set so when I go to the OD channel its a slight boost with some light od. I dont want the od channel to sound like a completely different amp! Its an extention of the clean channel! Keep up the great content!

Ramon- I enjoyed your explanation for Dumble setups. Much of the same rationale works on Mesa Mark 2B/C amps as well in how to balance the gain between lead and rhythm. IMHO the biggest problem is most users overdo the gain on the lead side and compress the sound way too much. Better to use less gain and turn the lead volume up a little. Also, big user of EVs since 1982, but they are not always the best choice, I still use them in single cabs, but move to G12-65/V80s or even Bludotone's (like a creamback) when in 2x12's to warm the sound up.

Like someone else said in the comments, I prefer using the OD channel as a continuation of the clean channel. I think this just proves how incredibly versatile these amps can be since they are able cover a lot of musical genres and work with virtually any guitar.
It was also very cool to hear you talking about how the Dumble is like the amp that is not there, almost like plugging the guitar to your speaker. Everything else is in the fingers, the amps is only making the guitar sing.

My Carol Ann OD2 is an EL 34 based 100 W amp with Dumble topology and two channels (with independent volumes and EQ). It has the Skyliner EQ and built in Dumblelator. I use two different cabs for different sounds and style. 1x12 with EVM12L and 2x12 with a Celestion Lead 80 in the bottom and WGS ET-65 in the topp. My standard setup is wet/wet-dry. Carol Ann into my 1x12 (dry) and a Van Weelden Royal Overdrive pedal into a DW Mark Raw Dawg (wet into the effect loop). But when I use my Carol Ann as a single amp setup and going for a blues sound I have to set it different depending on cab. Normally I set my input around 9-10 o'clock and drive at 9 o'clock
(depending on guitar), bright switch off. Presence around noon. Eq settings change drastically depending on cab, less bass and more treble on the 1x12 and almost the opposite on the 2x12. But when I'm going into rock mode and Trainwreck/Marshall tone in my 1x12, the bright switch is on, presence at 3 o'clock input at 2 o'clock and gain at 3 o'clock. Bass and Mid approx. 9-10 o'clock and treble at 2 o'clock. This amp does way more than Carlton/Ford :D One more thing, depending on valve in the V1 socket it can drastically change the amount of input level. I recently change my preamp valves to NOS and they sounded better but had a little less gain than my old ones.
    Take care and stay well.

If you can't play loud, I would consider buying something that can attenuate the amp and run headphones so you can play at night (something like an Ox or Tube Amp Expander or Two Notes Captor). Those allow you to run the valve amp at greater levels without your neighbours calling the police. If you are going to run a valve amp at 0,5 on the volume, my advice would be sticking to Solid State amps, like a katana or something. And don't let the wattage fool you. A 5w valve amp can be loud as hell. If you live in a flat your neighbours will definitely hear it if you crank it to get some sweet sustain and compression (i would imagine that's why you want a valve amp). That's why the Ox is the single greatest piece of equipment I own. Without it, my valve amps would be of no use to me. And some amps do need to be set at great levels in order for them to properly work. My Dumble clone for example only sounds good with the master past 4. That's when it starts to breath. Without the Ox, I wouldn't be able to play with that tone I've chased for years on end silently (it's all happening in my headphones). I know it isn't ideal but the experience with the headphones on the Ox is tremendous, considering

@@rocketpoolpki Don't mention it, I'm glad if I can help people. Unfortunately most guitar gear is very expensive and it is difficult to find the equipment that really speaks to us. (e.g., I bought a Vemuram Myriad Fuzz because I love Josh Smith and lots of people said great things about it - I couldn't make it work for me and had to send it back) and we end up spending loads of money on stuff that either gets sold at a discount or doesn't get used.
The headphone option is the way to go (I think) if you live in a flat, so no embarassment there (not all people are able to crank a valve amp - we all wished we were able to, but real life begs to differ). Even good neighbors won't stand me playing guitar for hours with a loud amp (and it would be disrespectful of me). So the headphone-out of the Ox is amazing for me because it really lets me hear the amp. Sure, it has the digital modelling with all the cabs, but I think the experience is what matters. And it is like you are hearing a guitar that was professionally recorded. That's what I love about it. It is not a great attenuator, but I really don't use it for that. I understand it is A LOT of money on top of the money for a good quality valve amp. But for me my amps would be worth nothing if not for the OX. Just some food for thought. Also don't concentrate on the Ox only, as there are a lot of cheaper and great quality options. I chose the Ox because it has the emulation of a Dumble cab (bit of a Dumble fanboy, as you may have understood). Let me know if I can be of further help! Cheers
