All you have to do is look at the VFX credits for the film, and how many VFX companies, including ILM have been employed on this film. All you have to do is look at the VFX breakdowns for Top Gun Maverick to know what I am talking about. That isn't to say that there are no practical FX on this film, but they will likely be highly augmented by CG VFX to a great extent, as to the degree that it does not really matter what was what. The only reason to shoot anything practical today is how much easier it is to have it interact with other practical elements in a shot, such as people. Not that it cannot be done the other way, but usually when you have in interact directly with a person as an example, what you do is take that footage, and blend in the CG elements on top of what is there so that the parts directly interacting are easier to match in, so things like contact shadowing, reflections etc better match, though you would still have the lidar crew come in and scan the environment, and shoot light probes etc, so that it all matches.
I appreciate the insight especially from someone who works in this field. When done right CGI works well, the Technology has advanced. But then Practical Technology has advanced, smaller Robotics, 3D Printing and other Advancements mean that Practical Effects can be much better too. Sometimes it comes down to Cost and more down to TIME.... but its more ideal when we get a Amalgamation of both Types..... Practical and CGI. Especially for certain shots.... and so with Alien Romulus using CGI as maybe just to add Gloss/Finishing Touches to a Mostly Practical Effects could give us the best Xenomorphs we have yet too see
I’m curious, do you think this movie stands a chance at winning the visual effects Oscar next year or will it more than likely get crushed by dune part 2?
If I am being totally honest with you, I don't know if anything is going to beat Dune 2 in any category.😅 I think Alien could get nominated but idk if it wins against Dune 2.
It doesn't matter what, its the WAY you use the tools in any artistic endeavour. Make effective films, worry less about appealing to film nerds with low rent red meat like 'practical effects'. It's dumb. How you cut, sound design, all these moving parts can make anything work, theres no golden bullet ever.
I don't personally think that his comments are in anyway an indication of him "appealing to film nerds" because at the end of the day he's a filmmaker himself and he knows the process. Obviously all that other stuff is important to making a film but you also have to keep in mind the things that do work well and these comments are an indication of that.
@@filmobsessednerd I'm just pointing out that too much is made of it, not necessarily accusing Alvarez of it..yes it would be nice if people chose better practical fx instead of bad CGI, they're just choices. I've liked all his films so far, they're "solid" although definitely lacking a strong sense of style..his Evil Dead was decent but pretty unmemorable. Anyhow im looking forward to Romulus, to be more clear, i think quite often people confuse "practical effects" as as shorthand for "more realistic"..For example Bottin's work on The Thing is memorable because it's visually powerful and resourceful.
@@Boxcar808 no I get it to be clear I am not saying that his usage of practical effects makes the movie good quality wise automatically but it could help. I was also making the point based off the fact that again it's an Alien movie he's doing and this franchise is known for that stuff that make it such a classic franchise.
There is however a huge difference when it comes to using practical effects and CGI. A practical suit, puppet or model has to be designed and built well in advance of shooting - it locks the creators into a design - and this a good thing. Most CGI isn't bad because the technique itself is bad, or the artists unskilled - the issue is CGI "can" and sadly often does end up being the tool of endless changes. You can change the design of the creature or the space ship days before the film premieres and this leads to the often substandard digital work we see in movies. It is not a fault of the technique, rather how it is used / abused by nervous studies. All of that aside - filming real things on a real set DOES usually inform both camera framing, direction and actors far better than an empty frame and or a greenscreen. A shot framed up on a real creature is 9 times out of 10 going to give you a more visceral result - even if the monster is just rubber and KY jelly - it is filmed using a real camera, with real lenses and real light... and even today in 2024 that is very hard to match in the digital world. As a director - a practical creature on set inspires different and unexpected choices of camera and blocking... very rarely does working in the digital world give directors the same inspiration and motivation. A real object under real lights give you so many random surprises. In the digital world there are no surprises or happy accidents... if you don't design / ask for it... it's not there.
This what every new movie director says while doing promotions. "We used zero CGI!!" I guarantee you this movie is packed with constant CGI. This is a great 4 part series about the problem ruclips.net/video/7ttG90raCNo/видео.html
What Fede is trying to say is that if there was a time where doing practical made sense then they were going to do it that way, I don't think he's completely excusing CGI from the conversation as a whole
This is silly old news and exaggerated - there WILL WILL be CG used and there's nothing wrong with that period. You need CG to expand backgrounds, enhance the alien and remove wires etc. Hell the ship crashing as in the trailer is already heavily CG enhanced. What always, ,always matters is if they have something new to bring to the table storywise.
These specific comments are not old news they are more so explanations on certain things that should be addressed within the rest of the film industry. I never said there will not be CGI you misinterpreted what he was saying. He's talking about the idea of using practical where it would make sense to do it and that if they could then they would do it.
Why is that not good? If anything that's better. Cailee Spaeny is not an unknown anymore she's been in a bunch of things recently and is a really good actress. Having an unknown cast will get the audience member much more interested in new up and coming actors.
@@filmobsessednerd I was really disappointed with the Dune movies - with Villeneuve [Arrival, Blade Runner: 2049] at the helm, I thought there was NO WAY they could suck but for me, they did. And then the new Mad Max movie came to theatres and I thought: that’s going to be so much fun, can’t wait! And it sucked too so, I’m keeping my expectations for Alien: Romulus as low as I can.
Still a teen movie like all movies these days , where's the adults that gives the roles credibility, like movies used too ? Alien and Aliens imagine them casted with teens ...movies used to have " actors " that suited the role they were portraying, but thats history . Cailee Spaeny was only 2 years younger than Sigourney Weaver when she was in Alien, and NON of the cast in Romulus are teens anyway. No wonder the movie business is screwed when people like you make ridiculous statements when you clearly don't know what you're talking about!

Quit doing the studios dirty work for them by scapegoating CG. You obviously don’t understand that the biggest problem with all these films is the marketing and PR people. Modern Hollywood is notoriously infamous for backhand shit-talking CG VFX. This is because it’s become a buzzword for empty-headed media types and media-illiterate audience members to regurgitate Pavlovian style as the reason for a film to be bad. Álvarez is only saying this shit because he is contractually obligated to do so. All because marketing believes (and your proving it) that if people think that if the work is pitched as all practical that it will some how signal to you that it will magically make up for shit production and executive notes. If that gets you in the seats for opening weekend, that’s all that matters to them. Almost all studio films require CG because Directors, Producers, and Stuidios can’t make solid creative decisions anymore. Everything has to go through committee and focus groups because there is so much riding on these films. No amount of FX (practical or otherwise) is gonna make up for a bad script, poorly developed characters, or a shallow plot driven narrative. Let’s be clear there will be Sooooo much CG in the movie. If it’s good and not rushed you won’t notice it, and that’s the point. Let’s be more concerned with the fact that they are seemingly stealing the concept from Alien: Isolation and bastardizing because they can’t seem to come out with an original thought. The fact Ridley’s even involved with this film tells me it’s gonna be weighed down with way too many cooks and notes. That’s gonna be the real trick to overcome with this movie.
Lol my guy, have you ever bothered to think that maybe just maybe that's how Alvarez personally feels? He's not getting paid to say that and the evidence itself is shown on screen right now. Also, no one ever said the movie doesn't have CGI, he's just saying that when something can use practical then it's going to use practical. There is CLEARLY CGI in this movie, anyone with eyes can see that through the trailers we've gotten already. Also also, you could easily say that Alien Isolation is just a "basterdized" or whatever word you want to use version of the original Alien movie. This just so happens to be a film that's following the formula of what can make a good Alien movie. Sure, the story might not be all that original but when you come to movies like this you don't necessarily come for the story, you want to scared and see some awesome Alien's on screen. I think you're overacting a little to hard to this no offense.
Wait. Wait. Wait. Back up. Did you just say you really liked Prometheus? That’s a bummer. That movie was Avatar in the dark. Alien Covenant was also garbage. You might have missed what made Alien and Aliens so great. Yes the effects were amazing. It’s the characters that make the movie though. They aren’t stupid people from horror movies that run straight from the giant rolling space donut or take their space suits off on a new planet bc it has “air.” War of the Worlds if you wonder why this is a bad idea. “Oh my god! Ahhh. Let me get this shotgun. Oh shit I slipped in blood and blew up the ship.” Super good writing. “Do you think we should split up from the group, turn our comms off, and play in the black-space-goop? I’m down if you are.” Yes the characters are scared, of course. The fact that they don’t let this control them is what makes the movies great and scary. They are brave, smart, and capable. They even have and use weapons effectively in Aliens. It just doesn’t matter. That’s why they are rewatched. No one left the theatre going “well I would have just run to the left or stuck with the group.” The characters make good choices, didn’t panic, and worked together. There was no space to disconnect from the characters and their stupid actions. No need to suspend your belief. “Let’s all three die together by flying this ship into another ship. No hands.” “Can’t we all just get off the ship if we aren’t even flying it.?” -Me. Put it this way. Hudson would have been the smartest, toughest, longest surviving character in any Alien sequel ever. Yea he’s scared shitless, but he composes himself. He does his job. He even stands firm and fights bravely until the end. He’s a trained marine with combat experience. You know someone you might actually send on a mission to space.
This comment is like cosplay. I’m not sure why it’s so popular to complain about CGI in movies where the CGI staff is as big as the rest of the film staff put together.
We have no way to known if it would be Trash yet..... but certainly if this doesn't do well at the Box Office and Critically its not doing well. @@filmobsessednerd Thats right, not because its practical it will look better or is the bette choice, the tool that will help to accomplish the best result is the right tool, cg or practical or a combination of both like you say.
Would’ve been nice to actually hear the interview with Alvarez rather than you talking about it.
Have you ever watched a RUclips video before? Also if you are able to you can easily go and find video of it online to also listen to his thoughts. we are simply covering them here.
Especially for certain shots.... and so with Alien Romulus using CGI as maybe just to add Gloss/Finishing Touches to a Mostly Practical Effects could give us the best Xenomorphs we have yet too see
Potentially yes I think a good mix of both practical and CGI is normally really good

I mean who doesn't love the Xenomorphs? Although until we see a character make a dumb decision to let them loose then I am team human.

I’m curious, do you think this movie stands a chance at winning the visual effects Oscar next year or will it more than likely get crushed by dune part 2?
If I am being totally honest with you, I don't know if anything is going to beat Dune 2 in any category.😅
I think Alien could get nominated but idk if it wins against Dune 2.
with CGI less is always more!
This, PSVR2 VR game, and a Mike Tyson fight. I'm 12 again.
Lol the Alien franchise certainly seems like it won't go away any time soon right now especially if this movie does well.
Subbed , cheers
Thank appreciate it!
Producers have you guys hoodwinked if you think that they should be able to blame bad movies on CGI.
Who ever said this? What are you on?
@@filmobsessednerd I understand, my comment was talking about the current trend of movie studios downplaying CGI.
@@oosmosmoo I mean I guess I see what you mean but if anything studios want more CGI in their films
Alien: Retribution? Lol!
A mistake made and one to own up to lol
The cast has me very concerned. Relatively unknown youngsters. Not good.
Why is that not good? If anything that's better. Cailee Spaeny is not an unknown anymore she's been in a bunch of things recently and is a really good actress. Having an unknown cast will get the audience member much more interested in new up and coming actors.
@filmobsessednerd it would be better with a senior command be more realistic rather than a bunch of 20 somethings.
@@robertprosser6856 lol I don't agree with that at all

I was really excited about the new Dune movies and then… I’m not going to get my hopes up, not again.
I need you to be specific about what you mean by this and what you're referring to?

This movie could have been the big next Alien movie since Aliens , but the casting will take that spark away ...its a pitty .
Lmao what are you talking about? What's wrong with the actors being a little younger here? Also in case you didn't know Sigourney Weaver was only 28 in the original film. Cailee Spaeny the main star in this movie is 25 in real life.
Cailee Spaeny was only 2 years younger than Sigourney Weaver when she was in Alien, and NON of the cast in Romulus are teens anyway. No wonder the movie business is screwed when people like you make ridiculous statements when you clearly don't know what you're talking about!
Agreed.
@@RoaryUK the ridiculous answer from someone who clearly have not been around long enough or under a rock the past 10 years to see how the movie industry have changed in general when casting productions to save a buck on the actors fee
@@olzzon and that's a bad thing? My guy do you know how filmmaking works? Casting unknown actors to play these roles makes it better. You don't need a top star in this movie to sell it. It's also smart budgeting.
It’s a lie about vfx cgi
What's a lie?
Uh ok lol
This comment is like cosplay. I’m not sure why it’s so popular to complain about CGI in movies where the CGI staff is as big as the rest of the film staff put together.
It depends on what the CGI is utilized for, it's only really ever complained about when it is used for unnecessary things
