  • Seattle, Washington. Steven Rinella and MeatEater producer Janis Putelis sit down in Steve's office to answer frequently asked questions. Subjects discussed include: the best bang-for-your-buck western hunts; old rusty rifles; a crash course on bonus points for big game tags; all-purpose rifle calibers; dry-aging venison; the problem with high-wire hunting; the hypothetical cooking of a red fox; whether or not camouflage matters; getting fooled by randomness; hunting trends worth praising; hunting trends worth damning; being a candy-ass about recoil, and whether or not that's bad; and how to transport game meat on airplanes.

These are awesome Steve! Give a podcast some time, it spreads by word of mouth - this is gold! I get messaged by my wife every time a new one comes out! Keep it up, this is amazing stuff!

I search meateater every day hoping for one of these. 18 minutes in and loving it! /edit*I have no angst toward the rem mag but will stick with the .300WM until ballistic data catches up to and surpasses it(which it seems likely to do some day)

Bought a Model 700 .270 when I was 12 by mowing lawns. Still my number one hunting rifle. Ugly as sin, but it works like a charm.

Howa 1500. $400-$500 bucks, depending on caliber and where you order it, I got my 308 from sportsmans guide for 473.00 and it will easily hit 10 inch plates at 600 yards... haven taken it further than that, but i will.. and I cant wait! absolutely a great gun, comes with a synthetic stock that has a Hogue overmold on it... so the whole stock feels like a Hogue AR15 grip.. It is an amazing gun and im very happy with it.. Ill be sticking with Howa for a while i think...

Wyoming Antelope/Mule Deer double hunt is one of the most affordable hunts ever. Do it if you can especially if you're in it for the meat.

Maybe I'm weird, but I don't really enjoy hunting or eating predators for some reason.
I'll hunt them to eliminate a specific nuisance (like a particular coyote that has somehow figured out how to pick off a chicken or two), but I don't know the specific appeal of hunting them.
That being said, the question, "How do you cook a red fox," is one I'd never consider, let alone hear someone else ask the question.
    Interesting stuff.

I just bought all my tags in alberta. 104$ total for a general whitetail. General elk tag and my drawn antlerless mule deer. Those prices you guys are saying made me throw up a little in my mouth. But I get it. Different pools of hunters / wildlife availability ect….

Is there any benefit to leaving the hide on during aging vs hide off when aging I’ve done it both ways and the only difference I noticed is you don’t have as much waste from the meat drying out if you take the hide off.

First rifle I ever used to hunt. Went and shot 4 javelina on some private land off a mountain top in to a valley about 250 yards out. One of the best feelings ever. Awesome stuff

Sveiki Janis, Couldn’t help but notice you seem well boned up on Mexican gun laws. I too have dabbled a bit in leyes de armas myself, I find it very confusing. I have given up on the idea on of a pistol in the night stand of your all inclusive sweet. How ever, some list archery as an activity and maintain an active archery lane or two (varrified). Was just wondering if you could give the old leyes de armas A peek with a bulls eye in mind. Or, if you have any idea on the protocol for entry with a modern compound bow .? I’ll be listening any way , so thanx. Deer love the smell of all beef hot dogs.. weird. but true.

Ima scrawny dude and have no flinch issues and I credit to getting smacked with the scope a couple times including my first deer, getting the mindset to know its coming but not care and make the shot has gone a long way with me.... but then again I'm kind of the crazy enjoy the suck type of person as where I could see someone getting smacked by a scope and never wanting to shoot anything with recoil... its all in the mind, and some people have better control over their thoughts and mindset than others.

I like it too. From my experience in talking to a lot of lifetime hunters in the SW, NW and AK, a lot of people skip up to a 30-06 which is about the same but more versatile with that bit of extra power. and a .308 Win will definitely take down a moose. Where I grew up, lot of people go after them with a .303 british, but the 30-06 is definitely number 1.
