  • Is now a good time to get into trucking? That's probably the most frequent question I get and I am making an updated video talking about the realities of the industry and what getting into this industry actually means right now.

I say the biggest problem with Trucking is it's too easy to get into... when a person see how bad the trucking industry is doing and how flaky it could be yet still waiting to get into it...😂😂

Pretty much the only thing that was as disruptive to the freight market as COVID was World War 2, which occurred before we had freeways. I think too many people have expectations that the market was anything approaching normal in 2020-2022, but it wasn't even close. And the truth is, there were some major changes happening even before COVID. Now, with increased costs, especially insurance premiums, uncertain regulation, and continued pressure to post record profits by corporations, whatever the new normal is, it definitely won't be like 2020 and that should not be the expectation when you're forecasting the future. I know I've been getting a lot more quote requests lately, along with increased demand to move loads, but I wouldn't want to be trying to break into the industry right now. At least, not without a lot of money behind me.

This 2024 1qtr reminds me of most pre-Covid-19 1st qtrs. Jan, Feb, and March slow, but ramps back up in April and is steady through August. A slight dip in September, but picks right back up again in early October through December. Then it starts all over again. Covid years were out of the ordinary, and should not be used in measuring freight cycles.

Hello Miranda and thank you again for another great video that didn’t disappoint. Your way of answering the question is the best for today’s market conditions. I hope your company can survive this huge dip in the freight market and safely ride it out. Here 5:11 you gave an answer that resonates with a lot of us, we’re not doing this as a hobby or a side job , trucking became our lifeline.
Psychological pressure is at all high right now, not only at trucking, so we totally get it when you have some tough day and can’t make a new video. Take care of yourself first. We’ll be here, waiting, and when you’re ready to give us more news, we will appreciate it, as always.

My point is rates will stabalized but in no way they will be as good as 2021-22 unless another uncontrollable situation happens. To get into trucking now is a russian roulette is very d.angerous

I just saw an add from Ryder offering trucks buy one get one 50 percent off. Wild times we're living in. I'd like to add, if you purchase equipment right now, you will be stuck with it. To be blunt, unless you can drive down the freeway with your arm out the window holding $10,000 without breaking a sweat, now is a bad time. Be careful buying trucks and trailers right now.

maybe it's time for folks who want to and think they can to get in on the area of the trucking market that has exceptionally low expenses, just brainstorming. Getting in during rough seas can teach a crew how to navigate during that time and they might be all the stronger for it. Yes this could be chalked up to wishful thinking...but what's wrong with that? Good luck, just push through the panic to the other side is my not asked for advice...

If you have payoff truck and cheap insurance ( mean aged MC)
And also your truck is in good condition maybe you can start trucking business a lot of people they don’t know how much is cost to repair a truck for example a flywheel and clutch plus labor can cost you 15000 dollars never sit on middle of the saw you can’t go forward and you can’t go back same result

I think the key point into getting in this industry is knowing your number's business & outside of business expenses combined, whatever that breakeven "number" is heavily discipline your self to stay at that number and above, in other words if your net is 10-20% above your breakeven number don't spend it on a hellcat or M3 , put it away for a rainy day do that for 1yr or 2 build enough cushion to weather the storm and you will be fine. You can make it in this business if you know how to get in 🤷🏽‍♂️🙏🏽

I understand sometimes people say wait but I'm an actual company driver they also sometimes take advantage of drivers with the amount of cpm they start drivers with in the current market, they lose contracts left and right, their equipment doesn't work, they don't care about you, you are just a number among many things, they cancel loads etc. On the other side of the wall running for yourself or a smaller carrier never seems like a bad idea to me, as you will be treated better to me or be more in control of your loads, lane. After being a company driver you don't be afraid of repairs, maintenance because you spend hours in shops or on the side of the road so you know you will treat yourself and equipment better... this is what being a company driver taught me or made me feel , insurance cost doesn't bother me if I have to keep a clean record for a company why can't I keep my record clean for my self..this is just my opinion...But correct me someone if I'm wrong...

Now if you have some connections for repairs and help getting better brokered loads. Its a coin toss. Now is the opportune moment to get in. If you can seize the opportunity now, you'll be in a favorable position when the markets change. Consider this: trucking fluctuates like a market, experiencing both highs and lows. Regardless of when you enter, you will inevitably encounter a downturn at some point. So might as well learn and discipline yourself now. People who start on the high side, die when the low swings back around. Also equipment is cheap right now. You can get in at a fair price.

The money is in niches. Now is the time to find them. I moved from reg flatbeds to maxi flatbeds (65k lbs) and Im averaging right around 4 bucks a mile. I got the trailers cash at auction for 18k. My trucks are already setup for heavy hauling with manuals etc. It cost me a bit more in registration and maintenance, but it only went up a few cents a mile. Fuel went up a little as well. But the difference in pay is well worth it. I own all my equipment. This down swing is not even effecting us much. I'm thinking about buying more trucks at auction with these prices dropping.

2020 wasnt the hight of trucking i understand that the rates went up suddenly but i useto get better rates 10 years ago and once drivers are done were done because people dont understand that warehouses shouldn't be opperating with such a small numbers of loads they should have supplies so if anything catastrophic happens we will have supplies already distributed evenly throughout the country. Its very easy if people understand that they have to have alot of money saved for a overhaul and any repairs for atleast 1 to 2 years because the constant cancelation of loads on the end of the week can ruin a entire week and if the mkney isnt there to pay recurring bills any carrier will fail.

It depends on many factors. If you enter now then you'll be making just enough to pay your bills. But it depends if you want to enter under your new authority or under someone else's. If you enter under your authority, then some brokers would want your authority to be active for at least 6 months, so it might be good for you to start your authority now with the expectation of good times to come in 6 months. While on the other side, when good times will come, brokers might change their rules and you won't need those 6 month of history. Any advice, Amanda?

We may be very near the bottom of the market in this industry. This year is starting off well actually in fright volumes as retailers work to rebuild inventories. ABF Freight says its core shipments jumped 8% year over year in January after profitability improved in the 4th Qtr of 2023. They haven’t been alone in noticing this new trend. Also, containerized imports recorded the highest month over month growth for January in seven years. Transportation prices rose during the month for the first time since mid June of 2022.
All good news signaling the bottom may be near!

If someone is considering staying in trucking, they need to be making a profit under the current conditions. If one is simply treading water, consider the possibility of the industry getting worse. What we have not explored here is the condition of the economy at large. It is not sustainable. If conditions in trucking were to worsen, while most drivers are wonderful, there are bad apples out there. If trucking were to turn dangerous, it would make our current conditions seem like paradise. If you're going to keep going, I suggest you have a plan in place to bail when the time comes.

Funny how brokers and dispatc and hr department that are involved with trucking act as if they are fully invested but they may have money invested and can always go find another job real easy but the owner operators and drivers are 100% invested because this is our life style and what we do for a living many years were the ones who bring value to trucking that every one is living off and coe's of these mega carries act as if its not just a job for them. The hardedt workers get payed the least and get no respect but everyone will find out soon that you can have all the high paying loads and all the newest equipment to pull them but without drivers all the loads and trucks are useless

As a 55 year old rookie sitting back watching listening and learning, there’s definitely no way at all I would ever recommend someone becoming a lease purchase driver first off. Secondly, with the amount of ridiculous regulations and state ordinances and laws targeting truckers I’d say being a company driver with a good carrier is the best bet for now.

Got four more months till I pay my truck off. I'll be listing my truck for sale in two. Keep the trailer to rent out and sell my authority. The amount of disrespect we get out here astounds me. We're not even talking about the ridiculous amount of regulations. I genuinely wish there was a shortage of truckers. That way people can really see how important truck drivers really are. Including these corrupt lawmakers.

There’s not much freight. If you go to a big company, you might get guaranteed pay, something like $1,000/week, for a few months while you’re getting layed over waiting for actual work to do. Companies make money by having as many drivers as possible. It gives them flexibility and doesn’t hurt their bottom line at all. In other words, make sure the freight is consistent. My suggestion is a Dollar Store account if you don’t mind hand bombing freight. Home Depot as a flatbedder for some company. Something where you know there’s always work.

It’s a good time to get out of trucking… talk to some fresh immigrants and ask them their plans for the future, most will tell you they want to get into trucking. 5k/day walking across the border to go work for 0.3/mile for mega carriers.

Good Evening, Here’s why I say it is NOT a good time to get in, I’ll explain.
    - I know what a governed truck is, when I started driving many state speed limits were 55-60 mph.
    - The NEW law/proposal comes out in May (supposedly) that’s when the FMCSA will make the announcement on speed limiters for trucks.
    - Now is NOT the time for many reasons to get into trucking.
    - The powers that be/are and who are saying now is a good time to get into trucking or that the market is getting better or will change for the better has an agenda. Just my opinion.
    - Why would anyone who has a platform (I’m not speaking about this channel) try and control a narrative about the uptick in freight?
Could it be because they know the speeds will be reduced and they also know they will need more bodies in seats?
    - They couldn’t predict the Covid freight boom, but somehow now they can predict an uptick, huh? Where is it?
    - Do yourselves a favor, WAIT until after the election before you commit to a potential financial disaster. Think about reality here folks, Americans a financially strapped, credit cards maxed out, but we have people talking about a surge in freight?
Who’s buying anything right now, again words matter so look at reality before you ruin your financial life.
    Stay Safe
    The Dean.
