Fasting & Fat Loss | Negative Effects of Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) - Thomas DeLauer…
    Leucine & Insulin:
In pancreatic beta cells, leucine acutely stimulates insulin secretion by serving as both metabolic fuel and allosteric* activator of glutamate dehydrogenase to enhance glutaminolysis. Leucine has also been shown to regulate gene transcription and protein synthesis in pancreatic islet beta cells via both mTOR-dependent and -independent pathways at physiological concentrations. leucine down-regulates membrane surface α2AAR and increases cAMP production, thus revealing a novel route regulating insulin release by leucine-sensing mTOR signaling. Leucine regulates insulin secretion by modulating adrenergic α2 receptors through the mTOR pathway - it increases mTOR. In other words, it regulates protein synthesis by activating mTOR in pancreatic beta cells that secrete insulin.
Don’t Sip All Day (Insulin vs Glucagon)
    Study - Journal of Diabetes
This study was conducted on 1205 subjects, aged ≥20 years, who were followed-up for a mean of 2.3 years. Dietary intake of BCAAs, including valine, leucine, and isoleucine, was determined and hyperinsulinemia, β-cell dysfunction, insulin resistance (IR), and insulin insensitivity were determined. The mean (± SD) age and BCAA intake of participants (43% male) at baseline were 42.7 years and 13.8 ± 5.1 g/day, respectively.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
    Insulin & Glucagon:
Blood-glucose level begins to drop several hours after a meal, leading to a decrease in insulin secretion and a rise in glucagon secretion. In addition, glucagon stimulates gluconeogenesis in the liver
Not a Complete Protein & Full of Fillers.
Review - Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition-
BCAAs Alone - Why Don’t They Stimulate Protein Synthesis:
The overriding metabolic goal of consuming BCAA supplements is to maximize the anabolic state - widely asserted that BCAAs induce an anabolic state by stimulating muscle protein synthesis. If only 3 EAAs are consumed, as is the case with consumption of BCAAs, then protein breakdown is the only source of the remaining EAAs required as precursors for muscle protein synthesis. It is therefore theoretically impossible for consumption of only BCAAs to create an anabolic state in which muscle protein synthesis exceeds muscle protein breakdown. In other words, in order to be in an anabolic state the rate of muscle protein synthesis must exceed muscle protein breakdown. Expecting BCAAs alone to increase the rate of muscle protein synthesis is a recipe for disaster because muscle protein synthesis requires:
All 9 essential amino acids (EAAs) in generous amounts.
All 11 non-essential amino acids (NEAAs) in generous amounts.
Our body can create the NEAAs we need whereas we must consume the 9 EAAs - the inherent problem with the claim that BCAAs will stimulate muscle protein synthesis is that they only contain 3 of the 9 EAAs. EAAs are needed in abundance to effectively stimulate MPS - if any of these 9 are lacking, MPS will suffer. However, when BCAAs are taken with a protein meal they can enhance the MPS stimulating effects to achieve a greater net MPS response than the protein meal alone as the protein meal contains protein with all EAAs.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
    Fillers:
Artificial sweeteners like sucralose, and good dyes like Red 40 and Blue 2.
    Appetite Suppression:
EGCG- Green tea contains a phytonutrient called EGCG (EGCG is destroyed in black tea during the fermentation process) that increases the hormone CCK (cholecystokinin), which is responsible for creating the feeling of satiation. CCK slows down intestinal motility as it causes food to move more slowly through the intestines - feel full for a longer period of time. CCK also modulates dopaminergic neurotransmission in the brain - it increases the level of dopamine in the brain, which decreases hunger & gives off a “feel-good” feeling. EGCG also stimulates your metabolism by activating thermogenesis - increases the amount of norepinephrine, which is used by the nervous system as a signal to the fat cells, telling them to break down fat.
    Fat Loss:
Caffeine promotes the release of norepinephrine, a key regulator of fatty acid release from fat cells into blood circulation to be burned for energy.
    Theaflavins:
Polyphenols, such as theaflavins, are responsible for tea’s antioxidant actions - they inhibit free radical generation, scavenge free radicals, and bind transition metals.

Breakdown: Take once a day, take with food, take after breaking your fast. Essentially just treat it as food supplementation.

That's if you insist on taking the incomplete BCAA's, which require other amino acids to build muscle; prevents fat loss; stops fasting; and actually increases appetite.
Instead of BCAA's it is recommended to sip Green Tea throughout the day 7:00 10:02

Love and appreciate your work as always, Thomas!
    Questions:
    1. Is green tea different from matcha? Which one would you recommend?
    2. I train in fasted state early in the morning and usually stay in my fast until lunch time. Does it do more harm than good? Do I actually need protein right after my morning workout since I train fasted and with no pre-workout meal? I know you usually recommend to plan a break-fast as a post-workout, but I would love to understand more about how flexible I can work with it.

Cloud Lê hey , I’m looking into this particular info at the moment and what I found ...
Matcha , way better than green tea , it’s cured in a fashion which holds green tea benefits times 100 plus
I’m currently trying to figure out my workout regime like you . I’m on 16/8. I work out 430am and break fast at 12-1pm
What I’m gathering is for fat loss it’s fine to finish workout and break fast hours later ... for muscle building it’s a bit confusing , recommended at end of fast to take advantage of Mtor which is activated after training and lasts 4 hours in the body.. in this state we have the ability to make muscle a lot easier VS waiting to break the fast or in a fed state also ..
I don’t have experience with this yet as I’m starting this program ..
Can you shed any light/info that might be helpful ?
My work schedule limits me when I can workout and I cannot imagine not eating at night , lol..
      Cheers

I use leucine to break my fast (along with rice cakes and pea protein as you recommend for a fast breaking meal) to immediately shift my body into "anabolic mode" by activating MTOR. For people like me who have a whey allergy and can't consume whey protein (high leucine content) it seems like leucine is a great way to increase the leucine content of plant-based protein powders. To me this seems like a good idea/ common sense...thoughts, anyone?

What about taking BCAAs before a fasted resistance training workout; with the caveat that you don’t consume carbs the rest of the day (other than the few carbs that come from vegetables)? That way you’re taking advantage of the insulin spike close to when tearing muscle, without the threat of of insulin resistance the rest of the day. Thoughts?

Try blueberries or fruit for recovery (like kiwi or strawberries). Consume immediately in a smoothie after exercise. Delayed Onset Msucle Soreness is caused by oxidative stress, it's not a necessary part of the muscle gain process at all. Also, keep your predicted renal acid load (PRAL) and omega 3's in a favorable state, and you won't have DOMS at all. You can track both in Cronometer.

I take BCAA's with glutamine on a relatively infrequent basis, maybe 3 to 4 times a week, but only after a workout. I didn't stop to think whether this was a good habit or a bad habit, and I have no control results to compare with. However, I have always *felt* like a simple dose with glutamine post-workout, combined with an electrolyte replacement drink or some fruit, really speeds my recovery, compared to when I don't use them. Maybe someone wants to correct me on why this is a bad thing, or perhaps why I'm subjectively experiencing positive results with this habit...I'm just throwing it out there.

I was going to ask something similar! I have an occasional Bang or Reign. Listening to the show while enjoying one of these drinks for the energy boost. I fast for 18 -20 hours on M and W. So, am I doing a retro action by drinking one in the morning to get my go on? Maybe we could get the makers to stop putting bcaa's in energy drinks. But I totally understand that there probably is not enough in these drinks to constitute a spike. Though, in the Reign, the ingredients listed in order of L-leucine, caffeine, L-isoleucine. Could be that all 3 ingredients are 300mg. But theoretically there should be the same as or equal amounts comparatively of L-leucine and caffeine. They never truly say on the can how much bcaa's are in them. Trickery!

Based on what you said could you argue that supplementing with "only" leucine at a post workout meal might be more beneficial. Is the effect dose dependent. More leucine . . .bigger Mtor response. . . If so what sort of dose. . .5mg. . 10mg?

Snapchat Hater who talks about two meals?
I have a black coffee in the morning and go for my workout. After my workout I break my fast with Whey protein, creatine and BCAA before having my Keto midday meal with sometimes some blueberries to spike insulin and mTOR. Vitamin supplements at that meal. Occasional black decafeinated coffee in the evening. That is all.

Some one told me to start taking them because I try to avoid meets as often as I can it's a personal choice , I cut pork out two years ago and it just makes sense for me to not eat meat unless I am a guest at someone's dinner who invited me ! . I love fasting also which my second part of my comment I guess is because I used to use collagen powder but I try to avoid meat now , someone told me sulphur supplements help in that area , do you think you can touch point on this ?

Love your channel, but I don't do Keto. I eat one ingredient foods, no processed food or sugar. I don't fast...doesn't work for me. I do need to eat every 3-4 hours or I get weak and tired. I think balance is the most important thing in life and this isn't balance for me. Don't understand how you get all the nutrients your body needs when you eat this way. How do you get 4700 mg of potassium a day like Dr. Berg suggests?
    Thanks,
    Cliff

im convinced that this is the reason earlier in the year why i wasn't losing, i changed my workout routine to mornings and was drinking BCAAs, i fast in the morning till about 1pm.....my weight and muscle mass just stayed the same.....however, when i worked out after work and consumed it quickly with a pre-workout meal, i got so much weight loss and muscle building.....i might change back to nights. I can tell he knows his sports nutrition facts....but i do wish he'd explain the perspectives between the BCAA videos he's done where he said he always sips on BCAAs versus this video....

My schedule is such that I workout with weights or do cardio In the am. If I break my fast after that, it’ll be too many hours throughout the rest of the day to break the fast after my feeding window. I’ve heard different theories about the ‘anabolic window’. Is it ok to work out in the am and then break my fast later like at 4 pm. Working with a 4-10 feeding windows and an 18 hour fast.

Eh I can definitely tell a difference when I’m not taking BCAA. I’ve been on the Intermittent fasting for a few weeks now and I drank BCAA during lunch for hunger pangs and it helped me tremendously. I did not crave food whatsoever until dinner which ended my fast. I have now stopped taking BCAA and have been drinking green tea for the past few days and can tell a noticeable difference. Loss of muscle and the recovery has been pretty tough. Where as before I never got the sore while taking the BCAA. Now I’m sore and lack strength. On the flip side I have lost weight. So I’m assuming I’m losing muscle mass which is helping me lose weight. I would like to retain muscle mass and build while losing fat. So I dunno everyone has their own opinion I think everyone’s genetic makeup is different. I think you should just try either one and see what works best for you.
