I just started modding mine. Moved the shocks in for more travel and lower CG. I like the idea of the putty. I used stick on wheel weights in the front. Between that and the brass wheels she’s a whole new beast. I haven’t over/underpriced one yet but I can see where it helps. I may do it to to my FMS because that needs it more than any of my crawlers IMO
Mine gets here today! I ordered the inner/outer brass portal covers just to see how adding a bit of weight will help. I'm always looking forward to the imagination you apply to the trucks.
Had to watch this again, need some Asc18 content! 😂😅😂😅 I'm wondering about making room for the servo and dropping this thing down a bit more. I know you did one already, just wondering if there are more chassis rail options, and if you ever tried to mess around again with altering the stock chassis rails for those who dont want to buy new rails. Also trying different shock options, working on a more overall lightweight option for the rig, and chopping this thing down to be like the 1/10 Asc Fusion. 😊 The ones i saw on FB were chopped kindof crappy. Guess I'm just bored and waiting for more of your content. Hehehe
Just picked up one of these for the kids to putz around with, have a feeling I’m naturally going to continuously improve. Thanks for the tips and keep up the good channel work 👍🏼
I De-cased my esc & moved it to the front tray this & 14g on top of the servo gave me 53% front. The esc is Conformal coated but I gave it another good coat paying attention to the edges, didn’t cover the switch. You free modded truck crawls much better.
Tungsten putty is a great idea. Wish they had a kit version, I don't want any those electronics. Probably just wait for aftermarket everything, but those axles look durable
Wheel weights from Harbor Freight work great for weight , they have tape on one side for sticking to the body and you get like 50 in a pack for $7 dollars . And they are small and flat but heavy . Best buck for weight
Great update to this platform. I drove it and my rock van last weekend. Honestly I still like the rock van better. Would be a good comparison because they are about the same price
I also removed the rear plate that the esc was mounted on so now I get full travel on my rear suspension and shave down the ears on my front servo to get the full suspension in the front.
@@cadeltarat yeah I did the same lol. There is a new servo releasing soon that takes care of the servo ear issue 🤘🏼 Been running one on my hard body ascent and it’s great!
Great vid Matt! Impressive difference for sure. The putty is interesting. And one can always go with lead solder or fishing weights and cut and hammer them into any size and shape needed. ???- I wonder how much more angle you could get with a centered limiter elastic on the front?
Yeah I have a ton of those I used to put in all my 1/10 wheels lol. I’ve even slapped them on the servos in these things before. Pretty cheap at harbor freight also
Have you found any shock springs that fit the Ascent 18 shocks? The stock shock springs are a bit stiff & I have been trying to find something that will work & are far softer to get better articulation out of the suspension.
I'm really hoping one of the after market companies already have one and are working on diff gears 6%od portal gears in the front with 20%ud in the rear would be perfect.
Anyone else have trouble with the lower socket on the shock breaking during upgrades? 3 out of 4 broke on mine.. Kinda bummed i had to order another set, but there's no easy way to use any aftermarket shocks...
great! i've been talking tungsten putty for a long time while others were doing the 1/4oz wheel weights. I have a ridgerock and its got empty space in its axle housing and tungsten can fill it in better. how's the drag break? i can't tell if its falling back or if you're reversing. even with the new wheels and tires, it still looks too tall. do you think shorter shocks would be good? it would also prevent from unloading on up/down hills
@@MrsRabbit8 not the same exact transmission. A couple gears will work but I don’t think all of them will swap. I swapped a couple Trx4m gears into one of mine at one point but it just didn’t run as smooth to me.
They had said they were gonna change the gearing possibly and get back with me cause mine was a little rough. Haven’t heard anything else yet about it. My servo also died so I gotta swap it out before I can run it lol
Only 12% that's a little bit but in my opinion you want to be up closer to 30 what is the same time you can cause problems with that much too so maybe like a 23% better
I'm running the fms 2n1 with the smaller fms 380mah batteries. The fms esc has a better bec and runs more quietly. I'm able to mount the small batteries in the front of the chassis. This weight shift has made a huge difference.
It’s called a break over point where once you sort of launch the front of the truck up over a sharp edge or tough obstacle the rear will kinda slide down or over it. A lot of chassis’s now are putting some insane angles on the skid because it does actually work pretty well. It’s not near as important on these 1/18s and 1/24s as it is in 1/10 imo because there’s not as much material there on the skid to hang up.

I’m shocked at how capable this truck is right out of the box. I’m not a Redcat Fan, but this truck is sweet. I may get another one to do mods to

Nice work Matt! Waiting on a few upgrades for mine, then I'll dive in with both feet!
As always, great content!
I have some tungsten putty on the bench. Will try that out. May put some in the sliders too. Thanks!

Diggin the free mod videos!
My new 2fmRc t-shirt showed up and looks n feels great after washing the Carolina off😂 Go Vols!
Haha! Nice! Glad it worked out well
I moved my entire skid up one hole so it’s flush with the chassis now.
That may be the best move honestly. I thought about doing that when I angled mine.

Yeah I was going to play with limiting it a bit. It will definitely get 60 with some limit straps
Treal it's still my favorite portal axle I know it's scx24 but man they're just Bulletproof
You could also pick up some stick on wheel weights and stack them, super cheap. O'Reilly's has them in stock.

Maybe slightly better than stock on the drag brake. Not 100% hold but pretty good imo
First thing in my mind now was:
are the portal gears compatible with the FCX24 portal gears ?
No. I tried lol
Kinda hungry for an orange 🍊 for some odd reason wink wink 😂
😅😊👍
I wish the gears were in stock!
great content!
Thanks!
Hey matt, do you know the gear ratio of the transmission of the Ascent 18?
Thank you
I don’t honestly
Go check out the over/under-drive gears by injora for the TRX4M, they show stock, over, and under options for ratios.
Same trans as the Asc18.

@@2fmrc auh okay, i had heard speculation and claims, yet nothing definitive. Thank you.
Hope to see more on this rig!
Is that the new Furitek cayman pro v2 in the back ground? If it is when you doing the review? I have one on order.

When will the over/under drive gears be available to purchase?
Supposed to be first of April

They should have made it 25-30% overdrive/ underdrive to make it worth the $.
Yeah I wish it was slightly more myself
6% on each axle is the most that would fit in the portal boxes.
@@ShaneMikula I kinda figured that was the reasoning. It’s tough to get much from the portals alone. Any plans on ring and pinion also?
Thats why they need to come out with a ring and pinion set ao you can change 1 part and get a decent percent.
Please show how to use the body posts.
Where did you get the shims?
Those are just some small washers that came in a kit like this one. Been working great
